he Civic is truly a unique organization. There is something for everyoneno matter what kind of experience

you have! If you love great theatre this is precisely the reason the Civic was established – to bring professional styletheatre to Kalamazoo audiences.

Did you know we partner with over 1,000people just like you to help us produce our season? The Civic employs a staff of professional artists to support our volunteerswith their performance and/or technical passion in theatre. The Civic staff regularlyconducts a Behind The Scenes series of freeeducational events throughout our season to introduce our community to avariety of technical skills we employ in our productions. For instance if youenjoy building things, the Civic Scene Shop is open every Tuesday eveningfor volunteers who want to learn set construction. Or our costume shop isopen every Tuesday morning for volunteers who love to sew and want to helpbuild our costumes. Our Resident Lighting Designer regularly conducts workshops on hanging lights and working with LED technology. And certainlyone of most popular workshops is with our Properties Master in developingeverything you see actors use on our stage.

The Civic’s Academy of Theatre Arts also hosts a free Inside The Civic audition workshop for each show in our season. It’s an opportunity to get to know members of the production team as well as take part in a free educational workshop. And if you are looking for more in-depth training inperformance or technical theatre the Civic offers numerous classes andworkshops through the Academy of Theatre Arts.

The Civic is your home for a total immersive, educational experience in producing live theatre. The best part is…no experience required.

if you love theatre like we do, we want to work with you!

Stephen CarverExecutive Director

Love Theatre? Come Play with Us – No Experience Required!

He and wife Melissa’s favorite part of the show isn’t a song, buta line of dialogue that comes just before the finale - “Sometimesthe dreams you come in with may not be the dreams you leavewith.” Kyle and Melissa say that line speaks to them in a way thatshows how real life upended all of their plans of who they thoughttheir partners would be when they were kids in high school, butthey couldn’t imagine being any happier with anyone else.

Music speaks to everyone in different ways and Rock of Ages is amust see for everyone ages 16 and up who loves to rock andmade it through the hairspray fog of the 1980’s!

Get Ready For Some 80’s Rock-n-Roll!Kalamazoo’s Community Theatre

t’s 1987. Small-town girl meets big-city rocker outside of L.A.’s hottest club onthe Sunset Strip. And… they fall in love to the greatest songs of the ‘80’s!

The Civic’s production of the hit musical Rock of Ages will take audiences back to thetimes of big bands, big egos, big guitar solos, and even bigger hair! Rock of Ages is what is known in the theatre as a ‘jukebox musical’ - meaning that it’s a musical thatuses previously released popular songs as its musical score. Other well-known jukeboxmusicals include Mamma Mia, Jersey Boys and The Who’s Tommy.

Director and Choreographer Nicki Poer has assembled a cast ready to take on the towering stack of hits from the glory years of MTV! Audiences should get ready to rockout with familiar songs like “Don’t Stop Believin’”, “We Built This City”, “The FinalCountdown”, “Here I Go Again”, “Harden My Heart” and more hits from Journey, Bon Jovi, Pat Benatar, Poison, White Snake, and even a little Twisted Sister.

The Civic’s company features a cast of eighteen wannabe rockers, plus an on-stageband led by Music Director Courtney Carpenter that will keep the hits coming all night. The cast includes Civic veterans and newcomers - all anxious to put the loudest, proudest show of the season on the Parish stage!

Civic newcomer Michael Anthony Perrin was involved high school theatre and took anelective course in the theatre department at WMU while a student. Acting was alwaysa dream, but this is the first time he’s been on stage in many years. His daughter Nataliahas been involved with the Civic’s Academy of Theatre Arts and recently appeared inMacbeth. When he saw Natalia’s performance he almost cried thinking “she’s living mydream!” Mike and his wife Jodie went to see Natalia’s final performance and anannouncement about Rock of Ages intrigued Jodie...she told Mike that it’s a play about80’s rock and reminded him that he is eternally trapped in the 80’s and would be perfect for it. Mike didn't expect to be cast in in the show, but he and his wife knewthat Natalia would be so proud of him for trying, and not giving up on something that heloved…and she is!

Cast member kyle Sparks saw Rock of Ages on Broadway on his honeymoon. He grewup on the music in the show and they were ready to have a good time at a show.
