Primary Bridport ECHO Written by the children for the children and BPS community.

What a terrific term! The autumn term at Bridport Primary was busy, bustling and full of fun.

The children settled well into their new clas-ses and enjoyed a fresh whole-school ap-proach to behaviour: we said goodbye to “orange” and “red” and a big hello to our school values and our learning behaviours, also known as our 6Rs: responsibility, reflec-tivity, readiness, resilience, resourcefulness and reasoning. If you haven't heard about it yet, please do ask a BPS child to tell you more.

In this edition, you can find out about each year group’s learning highlights and read about our special moments from the au-tumn term.

A special thanks must go to: Xan, Amelia, Perry, Amelia-Rose and Sam for sourcing the articles, puzzles and jokes for this paper. Thank you to all of those children who have written reports for us too.

Great GoNoodlers Writers: Josh, Xan and Perry

All of the classes in the school use Go Noodle to keep active and to have brain-breaks during the day. There are loads of channels and videos such as Blazer Fresh and Zumba.

Every class has a ‘champ’. When you complete 10 Go Noodle activities, your champ levels up and when you level up 5 times you pick a new champ.

You can also compete with other classes by looking at the numbers of minutes you have played on Go Noodle. The more minutes spent on it can mean the more physical activity the class has had.

Colmers B are at the top of the school leader board at the moment and are particularly great at Zumba so try and beat them!

Shining stars in Watton

Writer: Perry

On Monday 4th of December, the youngest children in the school performed an entertaining nativity for

BPS. This is an annual event that the Reception (Watton) classes put on every year during December

time.

As the children entered the packed-out hall, one child who was performing was heard to say, “Wow!

There is a lot of people here!” We think the children showed great confidence in front of so many faces

watching them.

All in all, it was a truly fantastic (and super cute)

performance. Miss Upson says she enjoyed the

catchy songs the most and she wanted to dance

along too.

Great job, Watton classes, well done!

A super start

to science. Writer: Sam In late September, as part of our science lessons,

Year 4 (Eggardon A and Eggardon B) made tele-

phones to help us understand how sound works

and how it travels.

We discovered that speaking into the cup cre-

ates sound waves which are converted into vi-

brations at the bottom of the cup. Then vibra-

tions travel along the string and are converted

back into sound waves at the other end, so your

friend can hear what you said. Sound travels

through the air but it travels even better through

solids such as your cup and string, allowing you

to hear sounds that might be too far away when

travelling through the air.

We really enjoyed making the telephones be-

cause we got to be creative. We also enjoyed

being able to hear our friends on the other side

of the string.

You can make a telephone yourself. Read how to

do this on page 8 .

Time Travelling

Writers: Perry and Maisy Year 3 have accomplished many challenges this year.

Firstly, they explored a stone age topic and visited

New Barn Farm where they were greeted by two stone

age settlers. These settlers showed Year 3 what their

life was like and they explored their civilisation. They

painted with berries, ground wheat and made a balm

for their arm.

Maisy adds, “First me and my team went to make

medicine and next, we did painting with our fingers

because in the stone age they didn’t have paint brush-

es so they used their fingers or used sticks. After that,

we made flour and we then got a chalk stone and put

our own design on them. Finally we went to have

some lunch and after we got to have a little run around

on the field.”

Chilcombe classes have also been looking at Hindu

gods and Diwali.

I can also report they have been tackling instructional

reading and figuring out the mystery of the water gob-

lin by following instructions!

After that, they moved onto their topic of ancient

Egypt and have now made mummies.

What a fun, creative and busy time Year 3 are having!

You can continue to follow their learning more closely

by following them on Twitter: @bps_y3

Historians in Year 1 Writer: Year 1 In November, during Let’s Explore time, Year 1

learned about Guy Fawkes and the history of

Bonfire night. We were inspired to make our

own ‘houses of parliament’ and firework art!

Explorers in Year 1 Coneygar have loved the chance to explore lots of

different things in their “Let’s Explore” time... Year 6 juggles

a new year Writer: Amelia

On the 14th September, the fortunate chil-

dren of BPS got a visitor all the way from

‘Circus Berzercus’: a professional entertain-

er.

BPS had an assembly with lots of activities:

music, magic, games and circus skills. Every-

one enjoyed it so much, even if they didn’t

get picked to go on stage.

Children throughout the school enjoyed our

visitor’s humour and magical skills. There

was endless laughter and fun activities, from

the start to the end of the day. The next day

they all came back keen and ready to learn.

No frowny faces were seen.

Year 6 benefitted from the main event, with

having the whole day practising circus skills.

At the start, they learnt to juggle with

scarves. Toward the end, they were split into

two groups: plate spinning or anything. Year

6 left with happy faces all round.

This was year 6’s first visitor- it was just the

second week! Year 6 have many more

exciting events planned for throughout the

year.

Egyptian extravaganza! Writer: Ebony

Year 3 had an Egyptian day at school. We made lots of words out of the words: ‘Egyptian day.’ We wrote our names in ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics (their language). After break, we went next door to role play the ‘Book of the Dead.’ We all had a part to play. After lunch we watched a film, had a break and shared our play with our parents. It was a fantastic day!

Fitness, football, fairies, fun... Writer: Year 2

This half term has been packed with exciting learning across the curriculum. Our year group started off the half term with a visit to Colfox to take part in a Year 1 and 2 sports festival. Despite the long walk there and back, we enjoyed playing team games and developing our balls skills. In PE we have also worked on improving our throwing and catching as well as basic football skills. We really enjoyed trying to score goals against Mrs Dyke and Mrs Harrison as the goal keepers.

As well as keeping fit we have also been really creative last term. As part of our home learning, we got to design and make our own fairy habitats. You may have seen some on display in the learning hub. In our DT lessons we also got to make a blanket for our fairies and learnt how to do cross stitch. We are now busy designing, painting and making robots from recycled tins and other resources.

Our Science days were great fun recently. We completed different activities sorting and grouping materi-als according to their properties. We had a challenge to see if we could fit different materials into a small box. In teams we had to squash, twist, bend and stretch them and record our findings.

Spacey start to Year 5

Writer: Xan

On the first day of the year, after lunch, the classroom was wrecked! Everyone in Colmers (Year 5) saw it and everyone cleared up speedi-ly. There was weird green slime on most tables. Abigail (Colmers B) claims it was paint.

Soon after that, Mrs Thorner found something very strange on the Year 5 Twitter page… there was a message giving us instructions and clues.

We did what the message said then found loads of interesting clues. Some people say it’s real but others say it’s fake. We still don’t know what is true or what is false.

There was a light bulb shaped container, a tube of slime (or paint ) and a memory card.

Xan (Colmers B) says, “Aliens might not have memory cards or light bulb shaped containers.”

There were also very interesting pictures on the memory card. We recorded everything we had learnt inside our Let’s Explore books. It was a great start to our topic—it got us all interested!

Nature Rangers

Writer: Amelia

It was a lovely day for Watton when they picked apples from the field’s apple trees to then make apple cake.

They’ve used the field for more exploring since. They have found: conkers, leaves, nuts, acorns and more…

The children enjoy going on regular walks to explore nature and their surroundings. They’re called welly walks!

Spectacular Space Dome

Writer: Xan

On the 15th September, Year 5 (Colmers)

experienced a spectacular performance

led by the space dome. The space dome is

a company that travels around the UK

with an inflatable dome. They do a

demonstration about space with a projec-

tor that projects an image or a video onto

the ceiling of the dome (Year 5 were

learning about space at the time). At the

end, there was an amazing, epic and real-

istic roller coaster projected onto the ceil-

ing! It was an amazing and memorable

morning for everyone!

Keep Calm and Carry On Writer: Year 6

Year 6’s autumn term was filled with WWII themed learn-

ing. The children enjoyed reading and exploring Goodnight

Mr Tom in their English lessons. They used the text as

inspiration for persuasive letter writing. Also in English les-

sons, after studying images and learning lots about WW2,

the children created thoughtful and tear-jerking poems

related to the war.

The termly topic culminated in a VE day parade on Tuesday

6th December. Parents and carers (and our buddy gover-

nor) were delighted to hear WWII songs, see lindy hop

dances and observe a vast array of brilliant home learn-

ing projects on a WWII theme.

On the day, honey biscuits were baked using a wartime ra-

tioning recipe and served to the visitors whilst the home-

made bunting displayed (created as part of make, do and

mend sessions earlier in the term) was greatly admired.

Mrs Farmer said, “Throughout this topic our pupils have

embraced learning about their family history in WWII and a

flavour of this came through in many homework projects as

well as our artefact lesson study.”

Miss Upson adds, “The children created very convincing

propaganda posters as well as London-inspired blitz scenes

– you can see them on display in the upper key stage two

corridor.”

Perfect poetry Writer: Xan

On the 16 and 17th of October, the school

had a spectacular surprise! The staff and

children got to listen to an epic poetry

performance.

Year 1 and Year 2 had learnt a text map

about fairies using Talk 4 Writing which

they then performed to us all. It was very

interesting and engaging. They performed

wonderful pieces of poetry.

Everyone was impressed after seeing this

delightful performance and we are excited

to see the next one. Everyone had a lovely

time. Thank you, Year 1 and 2.

Super start to life in Watton

Writer: Amelia

Reception classes had a fun day when they came to school

dressed as superheroes. Some heroes that were spotted:

Spiderman/Spidergirl

Batman/Batwoman

Superman/Supergirl and many more…

They enjoyed it so much they didn’t want their day to end!

Sporting success Writer: Mr Cox and Ruby M.

The autumn term was a great success for our school sporting teams. The cross country team entered the Colmers Hill race on a beautiful November morning with the girls’ team coming 3rd out of the eight teams that ran, which was a super effort. The boys’ race ended with our school team being awarded first – winning by just one point in what was an extremely exciting finish. Great work, runners! The netball team took part in the area competition at Colfox Academy at the beginning of December and came second, meaning they have qualified for the West Dorset Schools finals in January, again tak-ing place at Colfox Academy. Brilliant work, netballers! We look forward to next term when both the netball and cross country teams will be in action again and the football team will start their Kenway Cup challenge. Also, the tag rugby tournament takes place in March at the Leisure Centre. Good luck to everyone involved and to all those children who take part in out of school sporting activities. Keep it up, guys! And finally, a sporting note from Ruby M… If you love running, you should come to running club. Many people say that if you have lots of energy you should definitely do some running. At the end of the day, do feel frustrated? If so, running is great because it will take your mind off it. Or maybe you just want a good time!? Come to running club and we will guarantee you a fun time!

Puzzle 2 Your challenge is to find as many words as possible. Each word must be:

•at least 3 letters long.

•contain the central letter in the wheel.

•be spelt correctly.

Some correct answers in this example are: rag and rage.

Writer: Sam

You would have read earlier in the paper how Year 4 created their own string telephones.

Here we tell you how you can make one of your own.

All you need is:

2 paper cups

A sharp pencil or sewing needle to make holes

String

Firstly, cut a long piece of string.

Secondly, poke a small hole in the bottom of each cup.

Next, thread the string through each cup and tie knots at each end to stop it going

through the cup.

After that, move into a position with you and a friend holding the cups at a distance that

makes the string tight – making sure the string isn’t touching anything else.

Finally, one person talks into the cup while the other person puts the cup to their ear and

listens. Hopefully you will be able to hear each other!

Create your own telephone
