PEOPLE OF KILLARNEY

Dianne Wiltshireby Amanda Ducheminsky

Civil rights leader, and wife of Martin Luther King, Jr, Coretta Scott King once said: “The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members.”

Dianne Wiltshire poses as another shining ex-ample of one of our community’s unsung heroes. Working as an Alberta Children’s Hospital nurse for most of her life, 70-year-old Dianne spent count-less hours helping those in need. For 25 years she worked 12 hour shifts in emergency, following 12 years in mental health.

“I love pediatrics and always wanted to help chil-dren. That’s why I went into nursing. I’m proud to have worked with so many colleges, doctors, and families,” she says.

Throughout her profession, Dianne was involved in many high intensity situations. She has since been recognized on the hospital’s honour roll for her work, including a “code orange” multi-casual

event, as well as her many recommendations regarding safe-ty and hospital unit best practices.

To this day, Dianne still “enjoys helping children and their families.” Now retired, she continues to help out casually when needed, all while participating in local community ini-tiatives. You may have seen her at the 289 Legion, as a branch service officer, or during a Killarney-Glengarry Community Hall Remembrance Day Ceremony, as a Silver Reef Mother. For her, it’s a cause that touches very close to home.

Her father, Greg Gieg, was an active military member. In the late 1950s, Dianne lived in France where her father was post-ed. She and her family would later move to Torquay, England, and then to Canada.

“We lived in Saint Avold. My father served in the Royal Cana-dian Air Force and we were stationed in a France 2 Fighter Wing. There were 4 wings, 1 and 2 were in France, and 2 and 3 were in Germany. The wings were a part of NATO.”

Now a 42-year-long Killarney resident, Dianne says that those in Killarney have also become a part of her family.

“Killarney is a very special community. We all come from dif-ferent regions of Canada and have different cultures. The res-idents support their community and share in all the activities that the Killarney community has to offer. We’re all family.”

As she has done for many years, Dianne believes that to-gether as a “family orientated” whole, it’s important that we “as neighbours continue to help and support one another in times of need.” She says that the Killarney-Glengarry Com-munity Association Hall has a range of activities that one can participate in to help improve the quality of one’s own life, as well as the lives of many others.

DIANNE IS ALSO AN ACTIVE PROFESSIONAL PAINTER, HAVING WON ARTISTIC COMPETITIONS AS EARLY AS AGE 12 AND HAVING SOLD HER WORK IN PLACES AS FAR AS MEXICO.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

The community association has a vision to build a safe, vibrant, and inclusive community. This takes energy, in-novation, and resources, and with many new people on the board, we are excited for the year ahead.

In 2018, we focused on stabilizing the Association:•We heard the voice of our membership via a survey•We became clear on our vision and objectives•We cleaned up our fiscal reporting, making it more

transparent with a new fiscal committee and improved compliance•We recruited new board members, almost doubling

our board size

2019 brings opportunity for growth and action against our goals to:•Improve our sustainability: Our Directors are building

out sub-committees•Increase engagement through new communication

plans and community partnerships•Develop an events and program plan to enrich a local

experience

Come out to one of our committee or board meetings to learn more!

Carolyn Johnson, KGCA President

NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

Happy New Year!

I’m not typically one for resolutions, but I do like to start the year with a fresh outlook. I can’t remember where I saw it, but about five years ago, I started incorporat-ing an idea to write a letter to myself on New Year’s Day. Every year, I reflect on what happened, good and bad, and jot it down. At the end I write about what I want to accomplish in the coming year. Sometimes I write about how I’m feeling, sometimes I don’t. It’s like a fam-ily Christmas letter, but no one reads it but me.

Every year I read the letter from the previous year and take stock of where I am. Did I reach my goals? Do I feel any different? Has anything changed? I’m looking for-ward to writing my letter this year, as 2018 is the year I started volunteering for the Killarney-Glengarry Com-munity Association. This year I’ll write about how many great people I’ve met and how much fun I’ve had get-ting out into the community. I’ll write about how much I’ve learned and how rewarding the experience has been so far. And I’ll write about how much more I’m go-ing to do in 2019 and how many community-oriented goals I will set out to achieve.

I’ve never been involved in a community to the extent that I am now and I’m so glad I took that first step and volunteered as a contributor for the newsletter at the beginning of the year. I had no idea how far that would take me. If volunteering for the community is on your list of resolutions, we have many diverse roles with vary-ing time commitments open to anyone who is interest-ed in coming out and giving it a shot. Keep reading or visit our website to see what roles are available.

Happy New Year, Everyone!

Jamie Anderson

Half of North American adults typically make New Year resolutions. About 22% will fail after a week, 40% after a month, 50% after three months, 60% after six months, and 81% after two years. Kudos to you, 19%!

Tot Time, KGCA’s playgroup for par-ents and caregivers with young chil-dren, wanted to give back this holiday season. They were very happy to make a local connection and form a partner-ship with neighborhood organization, Brenda’s House, an emergency family shelter for families facing homeless-ness. Families are kept together in a safe, homelike environment and are given the support and resources they need to help during these difficult times.

As a way to give back to the commu-nity, Tot Time participants, as well as the community, donated over 75 new household items, necessities, and toys, as well as handmade ornaments to dec-orate a tree for the House’s front porch.

During a recent visit to Brenda’s House with Fund Development Man-ager Elisha Jackson, we learned about all of the wonderful offerings and programs provided for the families in transition. Each family had a private room, free childcare while parents looked for housing or jobs, nutritious meals, and more. We look forward to the beginning of a new and healthy relationship with the staff and resi-dents of Brenda’s House.

THE PHARMACIST’S CORNER

by Amyn B.Sc. Pharm, [email protected]

Looking after your feet in the winter is more important than ever. Winter boots and thicker socks that come along with colder weather can lead to more foot prob-lems. Conditions that typically affect the feet include fungus infections (nail or skin); unhealthy nails; dry, cracked skin; warts; bunions; and calluses and corns.

Our feet carry the weight of our skeletal frame, muscles, organs, and fat and bear a lot of pressure especially if we are standing on our feet all day or involved in activities such as jogging or running.

Diabetic clients need to be especially careful about looking after their feet as diabetics tend to lose sen-sation in the periphery and tend to be more prone to chronic foot ailments. Improper fitting shoes can also be an issue, as any friction or rubbing or pressure can lead to corns and calluses. This can often lead to a lack of mo-bility and contribute to the potential for slips and falls.

I am proud to partner with Marion Smith-Olson, a certi-fied podologist, to provide foot care clinics starting Jan-uary 2019. A podologist is a professional who applies advanced foot care techniques and proper infection control and can perform full foot and leg evaluations for diabetics, the chronically ill, cancer patients, and those living with fungal infections, dry, cracked skin, and oth-er foot related conditions.

https://www.killarneyglengarry.com/development-committee/

The City of Calgary has been working with our Devel-opment and Planning Committee (DPC) to update our Area Development Plan (ARP). In the fall, the City de-cided to roll our Killarney plans into a District level ARP that will encompass multiple communities. This has caused some disappointment on the DPC team and KGCA board as we were excited about the momentum gained to define a Killarney vision. While the project is restructuring, KGCA is taking a proactive approach to ensure that when the City of Calgary project kicks off again, we are prepared with a Killarney vision. First we want to hear from our residents.

Funding for Calgary’s Infrastructure – Finally! The reason why I ran to be your federal Liberal Member of Parliament in the 2015 election was that I believe it’s important to send a progressive voice from Calgary to Ottawa. For far too long (nearly 50 years), only conserva-tives were sent to represent this great city in the nation’s capital.

This led to two things occurring.

First: the conservatives took our vote for granted.

Second: the Liberals did not believe they would success-fully elect a Member of Parliament in Calgary.

In my view, this led to our city receiving less than it de-served from successive federal governments.

Case in point: during the 10 years of the Harper Con-servatives, Calgary received very little in terms of in-frastructure investments. And that’s despite having 10 Conservative members representing our city in the na-tional government for each of those years.

By comparison, in just 3 years, and with just 1 Liberal representative for Calgary, our federal government has already invested far more into our city.

We have put significantly more funding into Calgary’s public transit, roads, affordable housing, flood mitiga-tion, arts and culture venues, and more.

This is important infrastructure for the long-term ben-efit of Calgarians. These projects improve our quality of life, and in fact, they can change lives—like the lives of the families I spoke to who now have a safe, affordable, accessible place to call home.

Plus, building these projects creates tens of thousands of jobs for Calgarians.

The funding is making a difference in Calgary, and I’m proud that our Liberal government is delivering on our promise to ensure Calgary finally received its fair share of investment.

Calling for Calgary Awards NominationsThe Calgary Awards is one of the largest citizen recogni-tion programs in our city. The City of Calgary established the Calgary Awards in 1994 to celebrate and recognize outstanding achievements and contributions made by Calgarians in the previous year. Each year, individuals, corporations, community groups, and organizations are nominated in five major award categories, for a total of 13 awards.

The City of Calgary encourages all Calgarians to look to their neighbours, colleagues, community leaders, local organizations, and businesses for those who could qual-ify as recipients of the Calgary Awards.

The Calgary Awards are for Calgarians. Individuals, busi-nesses, not-for-profit organizations, community groups and other organizations can all be nominated. For ad-ditional information, nomination criteria and the online application form visit: calgary.ca/calgaryawards phon-ing 403-268-8881, or e-mail [email protected]. Nominations open on Wednesday, January 16, 2019.

Fun FactThe Calgary Awards began in 1994 as a Centennial project to commemorate Calgary’s 100th year as a city and to recognize outstanding citizen achievements. The Calgary Awards celebrate Calgarians who have helped make Calgary the best place to live. Visit calgary.ca/calgaryawards for more information.

Once in a blue moon

Meaning: The phrase refers to something that happens very infrequently.

Origins: Confusingly, a blue moon doesn’t refer to the actual colour of the moon; it re-fers to when we see a full moon twice in one month. This happens every two to three years.

BUSINESS CLASSIFIEDSHappy New Year, Calgary-Currie!

As we embark upon 2019, I want to take a moment to share with you some of the ways that our government is fight-ing for you and our province's future. Over the past two years, we have seen numerous economic indicators suggest that Alberta is on the right track and working toward a ro-bust economic recovery—wages are up, retail sales are up, manufacturing and exports are all up. However, all of this is seriously threatened by the failure of successive federal gov-ernments in Ottawa to take action on pipelines, which has resulted in a significant price differential for our resources. But rest assured, as we have done since we were first elected in 2015, we have your backs.

Rachel Notley’s government is taking action to protect jobs and ensure that this economic recovery that we have been leading Alberta through persists. In fact, our decision to pro-tect and strengthen the services your family depend upon and invest in infrastructure projects—rather than cut them or perpetually delay much-needed upgrades to our bridges, roadways, and parks—has ensured that Alberta is in a much better place today than other energy-dependent regions in our country. But good government requires that we do more.

That is why starting this month, the Alberta Energy Regula-tor will implement Premier Notley’s mandated, short-term reduction in oil production. This action will defend Alberta jobs and increase the value of our energy resources. And rest assured that we will watch this very carefully. In fact, my colleague the Minister of Energy, Margaret McCuaig-Boyd, will assess the matter each month to make sure production is in balance with transportation and storage capacity and ensure that our province’s smallest oil producers are not un-duly affected.

Premier Notley is fighting to get top dollar for our energy resources through a made-in-Alberta strategy to build new pipelines, invest in new rail capacity, and add value through more upgrading of oil and gas here at home. Combined, these efforts will create thousands of new jobs and attract tens of billions of dollars in new private investment and en-sure that our path to balance in 2023 remains on track. By taking action now our government continues the work you elected us to do in 2015: to fight for the best for you and your family’s future.
