Creative Writing and World Literature were the two options for seniors and juniors to take this first semester for English. World Literature had 11 students while Creative Writing only had 4, but both were great classes. Students in World Literature got to read stories and novels from all over, starting with Africa, then going to Asia and India, Arabia, Oceania/Australia, and then ending in the Caribbean with a brief stop in Chile. They learned about numerous cultures this way, as well as improving on their reading comprehension. They are now working on their final papers, which is over a specific author we have read this year and the country he/she is from, as well as finishing their vocabulary books. Creative Writing has been working on improving their storytelling skills as they have written numerous short stories and poems. They just handed in their big project for the class, which is their 50 page novella. All of them chose to continue on with a story they had already started on in class, which helped because they already had an idea, as well as 6 pages already written. Each of them has impressed me with their creativity and ability to grow in their

skills as writers. For the last two weeks they will just be doing small little projects, as well as having time to finish their vocabulary books.

3rd Grade News

In third grade this year, there are 11 students. The students are Maesa Boyenga, Ariana Davis, Peter Heikes, Allison Honken, Haley Jansma, Jolee Jenniges, Jayce Kohorst, Emily Kolb, Aaron Nath, Blake Simpson, and Desirey Thompson.

In reading this year I have seen some great strengths in this class. The students have enjoyed our stories so far, and when we review each story, they can remember most parts of it. Even the stories from the beginning of the year!! The third graders have all worked very hard for their AR goals too. Many students have gone up in their reading level.

Math has been a fun experience this year with students who continue to want to know more and try their absolute best to challenge themselves. In math right now, students are almost done learning about division in third grade. They had previously learned about multiplication and are doing a variety of activities to review those skills such as small hands they tap on their way out of the classroom to answer a multiplication problem. This class blew me away with their ability to grasp multiplication so fast. I can’t wait to see what the rest of the year has in store for them during math and other subjects.

During quarter 2 students have been learning more about communities and our government in social studies. They are learning about who our leaders are and which parts of the government they are a part of.

This year is going to continue to be such a blast with these third graders. I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas and enjoys the new year of 2020.

Secondary Math

Below is illustrated the two pathways toward graduation that students at Ellsworth currently are being offered. One is an advanced pathway that leads toward college preparation and the other is a basic pathway that meets the requirements for high school graduation.

Recent changes include offering Advanced Algebra 2 and Advanced Geometry in alternate years. This is also being done with Basic Geometry/Basic Alg.2. Resulting from low class sizes, we merged classes together and offer them in alternate years. This year we are offering Advanced Alg.2 and Basic Geometry. Next year will be Advanced Geometry and Basic Algebra 2. Other changes include merging College Algebra and Trigonometry into one year-long class instead of two. This allows students to take Calculus during their senior year if they choose. Mr. Kolb

Better Together

With just two weeks before the season started, Adrian and Ellsworth schools were both informed of the new combining of all sports starting immediately. At first the news was rather shocking and disappointing to some and rather exciting to others. Newspapers had their fair share of interviews shining light on both sides of the situation. It was the word of the street for both towns with many different opinions. As for the Adrian coaches it was the best news they heard in awhile. In previous years numbers have been drastically declining in both programs at both schools. Making athletes having to play at a level they weren't quite ready for both mentally and physically. Having such low numbers put a lot of pressure on the athletes from both schools to perform at top level for many strenuous minutes with little to no breaks. It made for the opportunity for success dim. Hearing of the combining was like a breath of fresh air knowing all the opportunity and talent that would now be held in the new Adrian/Ellsworth Girls Basketball program.

When first meeting with the Ellsworth girls the coaches could see the sadness and disappointment on some of the senior faces knowing their mascot and school colors were being replaced by their neighboring school. But at the same time the coaches also noticed the pure joy and excitement on the younger athletes faces when they were told that they now could play at a level they were comfortable playing at.

Coming into a gym with 35 athletes was exciting for the coaches. Seeing all the new possibilities that were gained with the numbers we now had, plus the talent that both schools gained, the coaches were really looking forward to getting things going. Girls were now receiving breaks during drills and we were able to scrimmage with two courts going and with subs. The girls were taught new plays and new defensive strategies. They were also figuring out their new role on a new team, but most importantly the girls were figuring out how to come together as one new program and more forward as one team.

To start the season the Dragons had quite a few tough opponents to meet up with right away. First step was to head up to Sleepy Eye, MN and compete in a tip off two day tournament where they would meet up with the tough Sleepy Eye Saint Mary's Saints. The coaches knew the first couple of games were going to be tough because no amount of practice is quite like game day. The Dragons ended up falling to the Saints with an ending score of 59-41. But, it was a place to start and now the program knew what they needed to work on to be successful. The following day the girls played much better but in the end couldn't quite pull off the win and lost to Sleepy Eye Public with a final score of 63-54. In both performances Senior, Ashlyn Meester was able to put up 12 points.

The Dragons opened up their home games in Ellsworth facing the SWC Eagles. The girls put on a show and played some of the best basketball during the first half that either program has seen in a long time. They got people from both communities talking along with players and coaches from area schools and proved that once we fine tune a few things this program will be quite successful. Since then the girls have achieved a 1-5 recorded picking up their first win against the RTR Knights on December 14th. The Ellsworth girls have had quite a few highlights along the way some of which are Kallie Chapa being the high scorer vs. the RRC Falcons with 12 points. Morgan Dreesen going 100% from the field making every shot she put up against the RTR Knights, and Ashlyn Meester scoring in double digits 4 out of the 6 games.

Things are starting to head in the right direction for the program. As always new things take time and patience to make perfect and that's exactly what the girls are working on, coming together as one and making the most out of the combining. There is a ton of talent on this team and once we get more experience together things could get really exciting.
