Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Many people who are not atheists believe in God, but do not have a living faith. Some think it

is too hard to be a “church-goer,” so they do not think it is worth their time. Maybe others have been scandalized by the hypocrisy of some Christians or church leaders. However, I believe there is an-other reason lots of people do not attend Mass (or go to church services) and that is because a living faith means allowing Christ to change their lives. For many — and this is not a judgment of any indi-vidual person, but simply a general statement — the moral teachings of Catholic Christianity are in-timidating and difficult to understand.

However, those of us who do practice can attest that our faith is not blind. The Catholic faith is a faith that seeks understanding. God’s grace “opens the eyes of our hearts” to the splendor of His truth, and once we know the truth, we can be truly free. Those who are in ignorance are in darkness, and ignorance and darkness enslave a person. We as Catholics are a religion of faith and reason; faith and science. The truth of faith cannot contradict the truth of science, because God is truth Him-self — and God does not contradict Himself. To demonstrate what I am talking about, let me give two examples of why faith and reason need each other. Last Monday, here in the U.S., we celebrated the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Even after slavery ended in the 1860s, blacks were still treated as second-class citizens in a time that was much more religious than now. What Dr. King did is He spoke reasonably about why religious people — Christians — needed to change society’s prejudice against blacks or against any-body for reason of their race (e.g., his famous speech, “I Have a Dream”). He is a great hero of America and for Civil Rights. Now let me give another example: the legalization of direct abortion in the U.S. on January 22, 1973 — just five years after Dr. King’s assassination! This unjust law allowed mothers to take the lives of their unborn children. Not only is this gravely against God’s law, but it is against reason. Dr. King taught we as Americans can never decide another’s worth based on skin color, yet the law al-lows people to judge a person’s worth based on if he or she is “wanted” or not. That is not reasona-ble, and many who believe “hate speech” and “racial profiling” should be against the law believe that it is “ok” for a mother to kill her unborn child. In American society, we need a healthy rapport between faith and reason. We as Catholics do not believe in legislating our religion — forcing our beliefs on others — but we do believe that faith has an appropriate place in public discourse. Many who do not go to Church disagree with the Church’s teaching on abortion, birth control, gay marriage, priestly celibacy, and others. (Notice: these are all issues that deal with sex; sex is society’s new idol). For us to be competent in our Catholic faith, and for us to be able to explain the Church’s teaching, we have to abandon bad reason and an apathetic attitude toward our beliefs. We do that by attending Mass on Sundays, learning about our faith through the Catechism and solid Bible stud-ies, and making time for prayer everyday. And when we are at Mass, we do our best to pay attention to the readings and the preaching of the priest. This is our way of constant conversion and the living out of the initial proclamation of Our Lord, “This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel” (Mk 1:14-15).

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

Muchas personas que no son ateas creen en Dios, pero no tienen una fe viva. Algunos piensan que es muy difícil ser un “beato” (una persona que va regularmente a la iglesia), y piensan que no vale la pena perder su tiempo. Ala mejor otros han sido escandalizados por la hipocresía de algunos Cristianos o líderes de la iglesias. Sin embargo, yo creo que hay otra razón por la que muchas personas no asisten a Misa (o a servicios religiosos en la iglesia) y es porque una vida de fe significa permitir que Cristo cambie nuestras vi-das. Para muchos — y no estoy juzgando a ninguna persona en particular, es simplemente una declaración general — las enseñanzas morales del Cristianismo Católico son intimidantes y difíciles de comprender.

Sin embargo, aquellos de nosotros que sí la practicamos podemos testificar que nuestra fe no es ciega. La fe Católica es una fe que busca ser comprendida. La gracia de Dios “abre los ojos de nuestro corazón” al esplendor de Su verdad, y una vez que conozcamos la verdad, podremos ser verdaderamente libres. Quie-nes permanecen en la ignorancia están en la oscuridad, y la ignorancia y la oscuridad esclavizan a una perso-na. Nosotros como Católicos somos una religión de fe y de razón; de fe y de ciencia. La verdad de la fe no puede contradecir la verdad de la ciencia, porque Dios es la verdad Él mismo — y Dios no se contradice a Sí mismo. Para demostrar de qué estoy hablando, permítanme darles dos ejemplos de por qué la fe y la razón ne-cesitan la una de la otra. El lunes pasado aquí en los Estados Unidos, hemos celebrado el nacimiento del Dr. Martín Luther King, Jr. Aún después de erradicar la esclavitud en los 1860, los negros eran tratados como ciudadanos de segunda clase en una época mucho más religiosa que la presente. Lo que el Dr. King hizo fue hablar razonablemente sobre por qué las personas religiosas — los cristianos — necesitaban cambiar los pre-juicios de la sociedad contra los negros o contra cualquier persona por razón de su raza (en su discurso, “I Have a Dream”). Nosotros como Católicos, no creemos en legislaciones contra nuestra religión — forzar nuestras creencias en otros — pero sí creemos que la fe tiene un sitio apropiado en los discursos públicos. Muchas personas que no van a la iglesia están en desacuerdo con las enseñanzas de la Iglesia sobre el aborto, el control de la natalidad, el matrimonio entre homosexuales, el celibato sacerdotal, y otros asuntos. (Nota: éstos son todos asuntos relacionados con el sexo; el sexo es el nuevo ídolo de la sociedad). Para nosotros ser competentes en nuestra fe Católica, y poder explicar las enseñanzas de la Iglesia, te-nemos que estar comprometidos a seguir a Jesús como los discípulos en el evangelio de hoy. Nosotros lo ha-cemos asistiendo a Misa los domingos, aprendiendo sobre nuestra fe a través del Catecismo y la Sagrada Bi-blia, y dedicando tiempo para orar diariamente. Y cuando estamos en Misa, hacemos un gran esfuerzo por prestar atención a las lecturas y a la prédica del sacerdote. Este es nuestro camino de conversión constante y la vivencia de la proclamación inicial de Nuestro Señor, “Se ha cumplido el tiempo y el Reino de Dios ya es-tá cerca. Arrepiéntanse y crean en el Evangelio” (Mc 14-15).

También hay una carpeta con una hoja para que anote su petición, llénela y póngala dentro de la carpeta se recogerá al siguiente día. Por favor tratemos que el padre pueda descansar después de cada Misa no lo detengamos con pregun-tas que pueden esperar. A el le gusta hablar con la gente y convivir después de la Misa de las 12:30. Por favor cuidemos a nuestro sacer-dote que a sido una bendición para nuestra iglesia.
