THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

JANUARY 22, 2017

First Reading: Isaiah 8:23—9:3 The prophet Isaiah describes the anguish of a conquered people, but he promises that they will triumph and will see a great light as on the “day of Midian.” Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:10—13, 17 Paul speaks to the Corinthians with both anger and indignation because they are quarreling among themselves as to whom they should show allegiance. Some wish to follow Paul; some, Peter; others Apollos; others, Christ. Gospel: Matthew 4:12-23 Jesus begins his mission by going to Capernaum, fulfilling the prophecy of Isaiah. He selects Peter, Andrew, James and John as his disciples, inviting them to be “fishers of men.”

FEEDING OUR NEIGHBORS ARCHDIOCESAN-WIDE FOOD CAMPAIGN

Sunday, January 29th– Sunday, February 5th Throughout the campaign, we will display the familiar Feeding Our Neighbors boxes in the church and PREP lobbies. PREP Parents may bring your donations when you drop off your children for religious education classes. Donations may also dropped off when you arrive for mass to mass or else dropped off in the church any day between 8 AM and 6 PM. Please refer to today’s bulletin insert for a list of needed items. Your donations will also help support the ongoing work of CCCSR (Catholic Charities Community Services of Rockland) in their ongoing outreach to our needy brothers and sisters right here in Rockland County. Every year nearly 325,000 children go hungry in the Archdiocese of New York. You can help do something here at the local community and county levels by your participation in this year’s Feed Our Neighbors campaign. Your donations will help our local neighbors who receive much needed support through our parish SVDP food pantry. _____________________________________________

The world was a playground for Mickey, a naive Irish American kid bored with his life. His father served in World War II, his brother was a Marine in Vietnam; now it was his turn. His 365 days in Vietnam builds in torment until an attack on a bunker complex in Cambodia. Wounded, his friend captured, he becomes a tormented survivor knowing he is always just a heartbeat from death.

In this memoir, set as deeply in his mind as in the Southeast Asian jungle, a young American soldier embarks

on a journey to a war that, for him, will never be over.
