Hello everybody. I dont know about you but I have had enoughof this cold air blowing. Feels good, until that wind hits ya oreven in the shade. But when that sun goes down, you better be

ready to get inside. Weve experienced a few very cold nights over the pastweeks. If you see signs along the road they do show location for a warm shelter for those who

need a warm place to sleep. If you drive about and you see homeless folks, let them knowwhere the nearest one is to where you may be. It may also be good to check on an elderlyneighbor to make sure the heat is working good for them.

I do a lot of handyman work and getting my customers ready for the cold was a big part ofmy work lately. If anyone who reads this, needs a hand, building or repairing or installing fansor whatever. Feel free to give me a call. I been helping over 50 elderly folks by maintain thehome leaks or repairs for 12 yrs here now. I meet lots of folks just needing a hand. I chargeminimal to anyone. You as I, will be older, you just cant get that project finished or that dream

bathroom youve always wanted...but I can he lp you. Plenty of good people attest to our work. Now with tax time, refunds coming back to folks like you. You may want to think seriously

about any project you may want to accomplish this summer or before. That way we can fit youin our schedule, once the season picks up, so do the repairs and needs of the visitors. Just

something to think about. Just give me a call with your idea or need. So, let me change the channel, How did you like my Editorial last week? Our small survey

and from comments, E-mails and even phone calls. We had 348 responses. My take from some of the comments, is the majority of you fully agree with me about us not

wanting radical Muslim ideology, but yet when asked if youd state it publicly or as a privatevote. The answers were willing to vote without scrutiny. People are afraid to know, what is theright thing to say anymore? Me too. I suppose. But as you see from my actions, that I dontquiver in what may happen to my being FREE to speak upon whatever topic I choose. I givethe same opportunity to you, that is American! I am an American veteran and proud.

I must admit that I have made a few feathers ruffle, a few people had to change their illegal business practices, a few ordinances have been written, or changed to update to our area. Thisnewspaper has had its trials, and I have learned so much in the past 7 yrs. doing this. I really

enjoy being able to talk with each of you, through this newspaper, to stimulate thought or deci-sions that you may have an answer for. Send it in! To form a unity of knowing where I comefrom to broaden your horizons. More than the Herald does. I bring it to you from all angles.

Im told more people are going to meetings, to listen to what is going on, as people try toalter things to their desire. However most folks that have taken advantage of the lack of regula-tion by county and enforcement officers so much, they have actually expanded in growth overthe ten yrs, citizens have complained? How foolish is that. Dont deny the Facts!

Im very interested to see so many positions filled around Walton county with incompetent people, who know how it is around here in Walton county. How it was shall be no more! I washoping years ago that with the influx of new folks moving in and getting involved, that thiscounty would step up to maintaining our county roads to proper specific specs. Take pride?Way too many folks telling me of land encroachment by individuals beyond their property

line? Taking it upon themselves to place poles to make look as if its their land, putting upfences over 6 beyond the existing property lines? I have been shocked to what Ive been calledout to see for myself. Talk about total disregard even to safety driving, who enforces it? Who?

Heres a question: If the county doesnt enforce property lines, who does? The Sheriff? Weall have surveys of our land and the property boundaries. What is it in you that makes youthink you can just set crap out wherever you want and consider it to be yours? The days of

placing your arrow in the ground and calling it yours has passed us a long, long time ago. Tentsare not permitted Tonto. Walton co. should investigate Yard Sales too. Before the flea market

We now have setback rules too. Check with your HOA if you live where there is one. Checkyour county property guidelines. I have seen so many violations throughout this county. It willtake an over haul of those people that are in place, to enforce decency, living standards andenforce them swiftly, so not to tolerate all the games you (code enforcement) have been playedfor so long now. Most all violators have increased in size since you get involved. Even thoughthe Zoning does not permit business in our residential area. Yard Sales are business! You stillfor 10yrs have done nothing to prevent that flea market opening again. And your not doingyour job! You grandfathered in, something just built? Come see.Im not done yet.

Heres another question: a private road and potholes? Call your county and you can pur-chase Land fill and then rent them, (the county) to grade it for you at only $50/hr. Now, get thisSame issues to a county maintained road. The residents are wanting their road to be gradedto specs to stop numerous complaints of said person placing all kinds of crap outside of his

property line. Make the road as shown in all the surveys, right? Will the county come fix theroad to make it as it appears on surveys? NO ..If we pay taxes for these positions why if we,the citizens, complain and or request this be done to our daily driven 2- way road...the county

just says no? Thats it? If I can hire a county grader to come down private road to specs, whywont you do the same for county maintained road? We pay taxes for you to do just that! Please respond to this before we arrange to approach the board of Commissioners to questionyour job and its duties. Dont let Joe -Blows cousin you know, talk you into doing it different.Do it as its stated in records, county and state records! Staked it out, then he pulls them up?

I have seen the neglect of the road service and its conditions throughout this county. If youcant even do a simple road width designation for EMS safety, fire, etc. to us residents. Whatmakes us think you give a crap about the future potential buyers of our area? To drive oncrappy roads takes away the curb appeal to keep our values growing. Just do this!

We appreciate our readers. Dont forget to let themknow you saw their Ad here in The Emerald Star

News. Thats all we ask in return for your time. Its been 6yrs now..lets go for 7. Thank you.

Since we dont officially live here we haveseen some disturbing actions of land use violationsthat we were clearly told that if its not Zoned Com-mercial, no sales of any kind can take place upon it.

Yet this past summer I counted 27 Yard sales inFreeport area alone. Anything along hwy. 331 should

be banned without commercial parking and entrancethat is safe. Why should we buy here?

When you live along hwy. 331 you know to pull offquickly not to be rear-ended. Residential roads?

So, we came back, to look for land to build a homeyet we see what I consider progress to infiltrate thelack of an ordinance to prevent these eye-sores, theseland value crushers, these mini flea markets people

put out as a yard or garage sale. Its junk to the area. That is dangerous to neighborhoods, for you have

no clue what type of person now scopes yourneighborhood out, to later rob, steal or worse. This does happen and our county in Maine drafted

an ordinance to allow 2 per year unless moving, ordeath estate. Either way, small permit, couple daysremove signage and debris from the property so notto attract night thieves as they called them here.

If I havent seen any deterance from such in severalyears, what is in place now to prevent these low

budget, non tax paying, rule breakers of a zoningissues do? Expand to a mini-mall in their yard?Complete with steel shipping containers I seen on

one place and that man been scheming the county for

10 yrs. I know of. Even the state has an eye on thatman, but locally you cant get him to stop. But thestate will? Whos not doing their job? Something is wrong with many Laws and ordi-

nances in Walton county. Someone better get pre- pared to adjust new ordinances or plan to be sued.Even the state of Florida commented that this par-ticular person should have been shut down com-

pletely long ago. So, Why not Walton county?Do something to those violators. Ensure those of

us who paid for our land and homes that there will NOT be any infringements upon us to our living en-vironment. Can we get THAT in writing? MTC

Dating After Divorce: When Is the Right Time?

If youre divorced, or have ended a long -term relationship, well-meaningrelatives and friends may encourage you to start dating again soon. Buthow will you know when you're ready for a new relationship? This wildly varies from person to person, says Judith Sills, PhD, a Phila-delphia-based psychologist and author of Getting Naked Again: Dating,

Romance, Sex, and Love When You've Been Divorced, Widowed, Dumped,or Distracted . Everyone ends a relationship by grieving the emotionalinvestment. For some people, that happens before they move out. Othersare still emotionally married after the divorce is final. Dena Roch started dating while waiting for her divorce papers to comethrough. It helped, because I got to see what 'normal' looked like, Roch says. Ialso saw that my ex wasn't the only guy who would want to be with me. It

bolstered my confidence for dating. Claudia Barnett needed some alone time to heal before seeking a new rela-tionship.Your marriage has died; you need to grieve that loss, Barnett says. Tomove forward, I had to be whole emotionally, financially, mentally, andspiritually. After I accomplished some set goals, I knew it was time. Here's what experts say you should consider before dating:

Go by your feelings, not the calendarSome people are ready to date after 2 months; others may need years.Don't rush. It's important to experience the emotions associated with di-vorce.Give yourself a little time to think, a little time to grieve, a little opportu-nity to find someone else, Sills says.

The ex factorIf you're still thinking about what your ex is doing or whom he's dating, you're too distracted to begin a healthy relationship. Some people date and even marry to try to prove something to an ex,says Edward M. Tauber, PhD, a California-based divorce counselor and co-author of Find the Right One After Divorce . You wouldn't date some-

body who's still tangled up with an ex emotionally. Why offer that tosomebody else?

Are you open to new experiences? If you were in a committed relationship for a long time, the idea of begin-ning a new romance may seem scary. If you've recently tried other activi-

ties that bring you out of your comfort zone, you could be ready to date.

Yes, I have a beef with the county roadshere. Its sad to see such pitiful conditionstowards someones house. I agree with Mr. Wolfe. If we pay taxes to

have these workers maintain our desig-nated roads, then why does it take to com-

plain and see people who only shuffle pa-

perwork to appease the elders up?For someone to do their job shouldnt re-quire citizens to complain, cause evenwhen we do more excuses come up Not todo the work at all. Right Randy? We have storm drainage problems to a

neighbor who decided to dump telephone poles along my fence to prevent properdrain, so now the roads suffers the amountof water. Then again if the storm drain wasin place, the water could run without de-stroying our road. But you allow a citizento cause you more work each year.Instead of fixing the road once and for all.

We have no signs like we once had too.Observe your area Walton county workers, make it better or we find someone else tocorrect this yearly problem. You be gone?

Dear Editor,As a veteran to another, Thank you for your service. I

joined Marines almost 5yrs ago. I remember the nay-sayrs bout you, Not from being from here and other

jealous comments. Especially in DeFuniak Springs. You were a professional at Darts for over 20yrs and

stepped down to raise you daughters, by yourself. Ieven saw you on ESPN. Yet, No one but you, told youto do that. I had to say that cause I know not many peo-

ple who do not know you better, that in itself speaksvolumes over most Men around these parts.

You knew not 1 person here prior to moving and buy-ing your home. Really wanting to make a differenceand be respected for what I do is for betterment overall.

I watched you coach, basketball and soccer. I remem- ber you ran the city pool with the YMCA too. You vol-unteered to help out so many in so many differentways.

I hope your city and the county realizes a gem theyhave with you. Tread me, I bite..you said. I remem-

ber that.Even through this little newspaper, I watch online

and your not afraid to tackle the topics and it looks likeyour in for another court filled year for the citizens. How many of them even know you do that too.

From helping you install a shower to building an addi-tion. What dont you do to help? My gosh Frank. youhave done my Husband and I proud of our home now.

Without your creativity and out look on vision we

would not have our own unique greeting room. When we do officially move, I will be in contact withyou as always. Your a great Man. Walton countyshould recognize how you can bridge the gap between

North and South of bay.Us people on the north side pay our taxes too. WE

deserve the same respect and upkeep as they do by the beach. Especially all county roads along Hwy 331, startthere. We want to see our kids be in safe driving con-ditions.

We pay for the service. We are asking for the service.Define the road to specs..stake them out then grade it.

Good Luck Frank, well be in touch Rosemary Goodell

Hey Freeport! I was sent one of hundreds of E-mails but one in particular that I wonder if anyof you know or have heard bout.

Clary-Glenn Funeral Home has made request to build a crematory right in his parking lot behindthe Funeral home. His angle is that he meets all requirements for the land use...I have heard pointsof good and yet many citizens are concerned of the toxic pollution in the air here especially indowntown Freeport. Does that have any of you scratching your head?

Why there? Im sure he has plenty of money to buy a parcel on the outskirts to do such services. Several had said, you wont see or smell anything. Do you need to see records of proof? I wouldfor sure...so close to other businesses and a grocery store in what 500? I feel there is a pace foreverything and if he went just up on old 331, no one would have a complaint. Whats your take?

A colon calamityColon cancer is cancer of the large intestine (colon), the lower part of the digestive system. Rectal cancer is cancer of

the last several inches of the colon. Together, they're often referred to as colorectal cancers.According to researchers at Mayo Clinic, most cases of colon cancer begin as small, noncancerous clumps of cells

called adenomatous polyps. Over time, some of these polyps become colon cancers.Polyps may be small and produce few, if any, symptoms. For this reason, physicians recommend regular screening tests

to help prevent colon cancer by identifying polyps before they become colon cancer. Removing polyps before they be-come cancerous can prevent colon cancer.

Signs and symptoms of colon cancer include a change in bowel habits, including diarrhea or constipation or a change inthe consistency of the stool. Rectal bleeding or blood in the stool is another possible symptom. Persistent abdominal dis-comfort could also be a warning sign. Unusual weakness and fatigue or unexplained weight loss should be checked, too. Many people with colon cancer experience no symptoms in the early stages of the disease.

For those 50 or above, it is a good idea to talk to a physician about when to begin screening for colon cancer. A physi-cian may recommend one or more tests and procedures, including a colonoscopy and/or multiple CT scans to check forcolon cancer.

People are more likely to develop colon cancer if they have a parent, sibling or more than one family member that hashad colon cancer or rectal cancer. People with diabetes, who are obese, smoke cigarettes or indulge in the heavy use ofalcohol may also have an increased risk of colon cancer. Chronic inflammatory diseases, such as ulcerative colitis andCrohn's disease, can increase the risk of colon cancer. Radiation therapy directed at the abdomen to treat other cancerscan also increase the risk of colon cancer.

If the cancer is small, localized in a polyp and in a very early stage, a physician may be able to remove it completelyduring a colonoscopy. Larger polyps may be removed using endoscopic mucosal resection.

Chemotherapy uses drugs to destroy cancer cells. Chemotherapy for colon cancer is usually given after surgery if thecancer has spread to the lymph nodes. In this way, chemotherapy may help reduce the risk of cancer recurrence. Chemo-therapy can also be given to relieve symptoms of colon cancer that has spread to other areas of the body. Chemotherapymay be used before surgery to shrink the cancer before an operation. In people with rectal cancer, chemotherapy is typi-cally used along with radiation therapy.

Anyone can take steps to reduce the risk of colon cancer by making changes in their everyday life. This includes eatinga variety of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Drink alcohol in moderation, no more than one drink a day for womenand two for men. Stop smoking, exercise most days of the week and try to maintain a healthy weight.

shocking news to some. But if they act like itwont happen here, they are just hoping.

What harm would it be for the Sheriff to answeryour inevitable question; What is the plan?

    Ruby MartinezDear Editor,

You did it! Youre the first to tell it like it is.That other newspaper doesnt have half theNoches to print what you share.

Id prefer fact, over dressed up, one sided arti-cles like them. Keep us on our toes. I like this.

Robert MasonFrom the Editor, I was overwhelmed by the sheer number of you

sent in your thoughts and opinion from lastweeks article and my Editorial. I do have ourbest interest at heart and would love to be wellrespected and proud of our city. Lets join up!

Your sweetheart will have an amazing ability to lift you up and remind you just how special you truly are.Be sure to ignore any critical vibes you receive from a pal about your love life on Friday. This friendmight mean well, but it's also possible that his or her personal frustrations in matters of the heart are being

projected onto your relationship. You and your sweetheart might enjoy using your combined talents.

Get ready to enjoy a lovely boost in your self-esteem and your love life! During this time you may feelmore confident, and that will translate into a physical allure that others will find impossible to resist. Thiswill be a great time to spruce up your appearance, purchase a new wardrobe, or consider a change in yourstyle.

If you're pining away over a love interest that you know in your heart can never be, you might have to facethe truth this week. You'll realize that holding on to this fantasy is only holding you back from writing the

love story you know you deserve. This might be due to honest advice offered to you by a mentor, or itmight be due to outright rejection from the object of your affection.

A friendship might blossom into romance this week. While you'll likely experience reservations about this possibility, it's more due to circumstances around the two of you rather than your feelings for one another. One of you might feel that there's a lot of "baggage" to deal with if you're going to develop a relationship.Perhaps this is true, but if so remember: That baggage is what makes each of you who you are.

You might feel as if your partner is not supporting your career goals. In fact, he or she may feel slightly jealous over how much joy your profession is giving you these days. You might have a fantastic projectyou're working on, and you may be more concerned with pleasing your boss than your mate. Finding bal-ance between your love life and your career might be extra difficult.

You might feel convinced that your soul mate is not connected to your immediate environment. Althoughyou're typically quite connected to your roots, heritage and family ties, this week the search for love maytake you on a journey you never expected. You might consider dating someone who has a backgroundquite unusual from yours, which will surprise you at first.

Your fantasy life will become richer this week, but on Friday you may have some trouble sharing themwith your lover. Perhaps you're worried that what you have in mind is too erotic for your sweetheart tohandle. Or, you might simply feel embarrassed to share these innermost yearnings.

Your partnership might feel quite heavenly this week. In fact, until February 20, you and your love willenjoy a phase of extra special harmony and bliss potential. Venus will tour your relationship sector, allowing you to exchange more heartfelt sentiments than you have in quite some time. Don't allow adomestic squabble on Friday to ruin any of this romance potential.

An office romance might be in the air. This week, Venus enters your work sector, and if there's anychemistry between you and a colleague, you may no longer wish to ignore it. Don't schedule that firstdate for Friday, however, because you might find it difficult to freely communicate your attraction. You might also spend too much time over-thinking things, which will only kill the enchantment.

Your love life is about to get sweeter than you ever imagined. If single, this will be an incredible timefor you to meet someone special and possibly fall in love. You may get in your own way, however, witha ridiculous feeling that you're not really worth it. If that happens, be sure to remedy this false idea assoon as possible turn your mo- jo around before trouble finds you. It wont be pretty.

Your family might have more say in your love life than usual this week. You might feel as if a relativeis putting you down about your romantic prospects. He or she might come across as harsh, but in real-ity you may need to hear the truth from someone you love. Don't take it personally. Instead, decipherwhat is valuable from his or her perspective, and discard the rest. You and your love may enjoy a dayof bliss with family.

You'll have an incredibly sweet ability to communicate your most heartfelt feelings to your lover thisweek. While you might wrestle with a bout of insecurity over sharing your thoughts, if you use this dayto clarify how you wish to communicate them, you'll send a powerful message. This will be a great timeto write a love letter, have a meaningful conversation with your mate, or make a joint decision aboutyour relationship. Love will prevail. Your standards are tough to meet, but give it a chance.

Florida Department of Health Reminds Floridiansto Test for Radon

TALLAHASSEE The Florida Department of Health is reminding Floridi-ans about the importance of identifying and addressing elevated indoor ra-don levels in homes and buildings statewide. January is Radon ActionMonth and is designed to educate Floridians about what radon is, the healthrisks of being exposed to elevated levels of radon, how to test homes andother buildings for radon, and what actions need to be taken if high levels ofradon are present.Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that you cannot see, smell ortouch and is found in most soils and earthen construction materials. It isformed by the natural radioactive decay of uranium in rock, soil and water. While outdoor levels produce little risk, higher concentrations found indoors

present potential health hazards. According to the Environmental ProtectionAgency (EPA), radon in indoor air is estimated to cause about 21,000 lungcancer deaths each year in the United States. Radon is the second leadingcause of lung cancer in the U.S. after smoking and the leading cause of lungcancer among non-smokers."Exposure to elevated indoor radon levels is dangerous to a person's health,so it is important to know how to protect yourself from this health hazard, says Dr. Anna Likos, director, Division of Disease Control and Health Pro-tection. "One in five Florida homes tested for radon has elevated levels, sowe encourage you to test for radon and to take corrective actions if needed tokeep your family safe and healthy. Radon levels can be measured with a simple test and elevated levels can belowered through well-established techniques. To prevent dangerous radonexposure, the department and EPA recommends the following:

All residents should test their homes. Schools, day cares and work placesshould be tested. Test kits are available at many hardware and home im-

provement stores as well as through online retailers. The department hascertified radon measurement professionals who are available to provide radon testingfor a fee.

Building owners should address elevated radon-related problems immediately thiscan be done by a department-certified radon mitigation professional. New buildings should include radon-resistant features, which can be easily and inex-

pensively installed during initial construction these features are especially importantin areas reporting elevated radon levels. For more information about radon, its health effects and testing procedures, pleasevisit the department's Radon Program's website at http://radon.floridahealth.gov orcontact the Department's Radon Hotline at 1-800-543-8279.The department works to protect, promote and improve the health of all people inFlorida through integrated state, county and community efforts.Follow us on Twitter at @HealthyFla and on Facebook. Insomniac

By Rian LydayOver the past few years, sleep has gradually disappeared frommy life. I wake up between midnight and 2am, and proceed tostare at the time until my alarm goes off. I thought I wasalonethe early morning hours are so quiet. I cant get upand be productive because I would keep my whole familyawake. So, I play Candy Crush, my head filled with little

bright colored candies in the breaking apart on each other. Idecided I would turn to my trusty Facebook friends to ask for advice and thought Iwould share some of the 50 something comments I had so my fellow insomniac friendsmay find a solution to this very real problem. *Note: My friends come from a variety offun backgrounds so their solutions are as varied as they are!

MelatoninTart cherry juice concentrate. One ounce before bed and you'll sleep like a baby

and have very colorful dreams. Not sure anything natural will keep you asleep all night:-(There is a Neuro sleep drink I'm not sure if it's there but that helps me or zzzquilYou ever try alcohol?Try midnite. You can but it at any drug store over the counter. It is all natural and

non-habit forming. I used it when I worked overnights and it was a life saver.Have you tried Melatonin Plus? Helps me "stay" asleep.Get your hormones checked. Simple Blood testGinger tea.... is work a lot that's what I used maMight not be taking enough melatonin

Natural Calm works great for me. It's a magnesium supplement. You can get it atRichards or Whole Foods.

Workout. Exhaust your body. You will have ZERO trouble going to sleep.I also heard taking vitamins B6 & B12 first thing in the morning gives you an

energy boost during day which in turn helps you sleep at night. I also sleep better when I exercise regularly...even if it's only a 20-30 minute walk.

Meleleuca has a sleep medicine (everything they have is a natural)Take liquid vitamin D. I couldn't sleep, brain never shuts off. Doctor checked my

levels for everything. My vitamin d was depleted. He told me liquid is better.5000mg a night. It worked well. Doesn't taste too bad either.BeerI would try essential oils!Eat lots of turkey... I always get sleepy after a good turkey meal lolI'm playing cards with the neighbors and she said to stop drinking beer and take

"valerian root"Peel and eat shrimp. A lot of it.

Natural Calm works great! And it's good for you too!Melatonin3mg alone did not work for me until I added 3 Valerian Root if you can

stand the smell of them!I use 10mg a night 1/2 hour before bedtime. I also would recommend a cup of hot

chocolate Soy Milk. I use Silk. It has multiple benefits to calm the mind and body and helps me shut off my brain and sleep. Same thing, about half hour before bed time.

Valerian root pills and spray lavender essential oil.
