Today, the Church invites us to meditate on Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, the Beatitudes. By reading, meditating, praying and contemplating this unique passage from Matthew, we see that we all come from the Lord and we belong to Him; therefore, we are grateful, blessed and belonged. When we belong to the Father we participate in His love, His kindness, His attitudes and His Virtues.

Once we faithfully know that our Spiritual Being belongs to our Heavenly Father; our attitudes are intimately incorporated into these virtues in becoming one with the Father, who imparts His graces and blessings upon us.

The question is, how our attitudes should be vis-à-vis the many blessings our Heavenly Father has given us? Through the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus begs His Disciples and us to live and carry on our journey. Furthermore, Jesus invites us to be aware of our spiritual relation with the Lord and our attitudes toward others and anything that life offers.

If arrogance, mismanagement, misunderstanding, disgrace, poverty, and injustice occur; it is our responsibility to spiritually know and live in His gratitude and blessing on our journey.

The Sermon on the Mount is Jesus Himself speaking to us. Jesus lets us know that we are blessed and grateful because we belong to Him. Jesus touches our very selves and the fragility of our beings; the way we should be living and the reaction of our attitudes in life.

If you are about to meditate on one of the Beatitudes of Jesus, which one is a blessing for you and which one strikes you? Where do you see God’s blessings and gratefulness in your daily life in building communion with others?

Keep in mind, Jesus is speaking to you and all people. Know that you belong to Him and you are His follower; you are blessed and grateful. You are responsible to let Jesus Christ's Beatitudes be your attitudes day in and day out.

PASTOR’S MESSAGE

This weekend, our parish and Temple Beth El will continue our long history of faith and educational activities to strengthen our inter-community relationship, mutual understanding and respect. Friday evening parishioners participated in the Shabbat Service at Temple Beth El. This service included the choirs from both congregations and the participation of our clergy.

On Sunday afternoon, January 29, members, choir and clergy of Temple Beth El will join us at the 12:15pm Mass. At both the Shabbat Service and Sunday Mass, the presenters will be Rabbi Daniel Levin and Monsignor Michael D. McGraw. The theme of this year's celebration is the importance of the virtue of humility in our relationship with God and with our neighbors.

Humility has always been recognized as foundational for our relationship with our God. To be grateful, thoughtful, obedient, and trusting in God's loving will and purpose for us is the most honest posture before God. We know that we have received everything as a gift from our generous God. We should therefore have the humility and spirit of the little ones, the children of Jesus's parables. When we pray we need to be like the tax collector who prayed from the reality of his sinful life and asked for forgiveness. This is by way of contrast with the Pharisee who only praised himself in prayer and denigrated others. Jesus taught us that it was the repentant humble tax collector who went away justified from the temple, not the Pharisee.

Regarding humility in our interactions with others, it is important that we truly listen, respond, and treat others with respect in all of our conversations. The practice of dialogue and seeking mutual understanding is the only way to overcome differences or conflicts. It is also a reflection of the consideration and respect we have for another human being created in love by our generous God.

In this time of conflicting values, ideals, philosophies and way of life, humility in action is a much needed practice.

The first of Jesus's Beatitudes describes what our times needs the most "Blessed are the poor in spirit for they shall inherit the Kingdom of God."

Please make time during this weekend of January 28 & 29 to be a participant in our Thirty-first Interfaith celebration. Through initiatives like this we develop a deeper understanding of the faith of our Jewish brothers and sisters and have an opportunity to recommit ourselves to our own Faith Tradition.

- Monsignor Michael D. McGraw

FROM THE SJA DEVELOPMENT & STEWARDSHIP DIRECTOR

ST. JOAN OF ARC IS BLESSED BY A BENEVOLENT PARISH COMMUNITY!

As with any capital campaign, the most daunting part is raising the last bit of the funding in order to reach its goal. This holds true for the St. Joan of Arc parish as the Journey Forward campaign is in need of a final amount that totals $750,000.

However, there is still hope for a truly successful campaign. You may recall that over the summer a gracious donor tested this incredible parish with a matching gift challenge, and St. Joan of Arc rose to the call. The generosity of St. Joan parishioners was overwhelming, and added to an to an Advent season full of blessings because the campaign was able to quickly raise $500,000 toward the final Journey Forward goal, leaving a deficit of approximately $250,000. As a result of the success of the first matching challenge gift, shown through the kindness of the SJA community, another anonymous donor stepped forward with an additional challenge. The requirements of this new dare is that the donor will give $100,000 to the campaign if St. Joan of Arc can raise $100,000 by the end of February 2017 - which would double the gift and leave a shortfall of $50,000 towards the completion of the Journey Forward goal. These things are proof positive that St. Joan of Arc is blessed! But, this blessing is one that needs some additional support - will you help answer the call of this new opportunity?

Once again I come before the parish family and ask for support. If you have not yet donated or pledged your assistance for this once in a lifetime endeavor, please do so now! Rise to the call, show your benevolence whether for the first time or for the fifth time. All donations are welcome and be assured that no donation is too small. With the new matching challenge, a $100 gift quickly becomes $200 and a gift of $1,000 becomes $2,000.

Raising two thirds of the remaining $750,000 in two months was a monumental accomplishment for St. Joan of Arc which is why, as the Development Director for St. Joan, I feel certain that this community will indeed rise to this new challenge and raise $100,000 by the end of February and secure the final $50,000 as well!

With the fast approaching deadline for this new challenge coupled with the dedication and blessing slated for March 16, 2017, your help is needed now more than ever to help bring the vision and years of planning for the future of St. Joan of Arc to completion.

I do see a bright future ahead for St. Joan of Arc - its families, its parishioners, and its community because of the vast opportunities that will be provided as a result of the Journey Forward strategic plan. But, it’s not complete yet and your help is still needed. Will you rise to this new call? Will you again show your benevolence? Or will you show your benevolence for the first time? Please know that when you do, you do it for the future of this parish, your parish, and for future generations that will continue your legacy through St. Joan of Arc.

Wendy Horton SJA Development & Stewardship Director

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION 2017

SUNDAY BIBLE STUDY Study the Gospel of St. John at 9:15am in Conference Room B. Religious Education Parents are welcomed and encouraged to join the Sunday Bible Study group while their children are in class.

HOME CONNECTION: How do we practice humility in our lives? A good starting point may be minding our manners. When

entering a building, do we rush in to be first, or do we hold the door open for those who come

behind us? When in a crowded event, do we sit comfortably or do we give our seat to the elderly still standing? When dining out, do we treat our server in an arrogant manner, or are we kind and polite? Let us follow the words of the prophet

Zephaniah and “seek humility” (Zep 2:3).

POPE FRANCIS’ PRAYER INTENTIONS

FOR THE MONTH OF JANUARY

CHRISTIAN UNITY:That all Christians may be faithful to the Lord’s teaching by striving

with prayer and fraternal charity to restore ecclesial communion and by collaborating to meet the challenges

facing humanity.

STEP 1 Gather your information about your assets, including retirement funds, bank accounts and real property.

STEP 2 Choose the type of bequest you’d like to make.1. Unrestricted bequest. This is a donation to be used for St. Joan of Arc general funds. This donation would be used where it is most needed.2. Restricted bequest. This donation specifies how the money is to be used. (This could be restricted to go into the endowment, a specific ministry, or the building fund.)A bequest can be made in a number of ways:• A specific dollar amount.• Specific assets, such as securities, real estate, or tangible property.• Retirement account assets, consisting of any benefits remaining in your retirement plan.• A residuary bequest, St. Joan of Arc receives all or a percentage of your estate after all other obligations are met.• An existing will or trust can be easily amended to include a gift to St. Joan of Arc without rewriting the entire document. Your attorney can prepare a simple document, called a codicil, which adds a new bequest while reaffirming the terms of your will. Similarly, an attorney can prepare an amendment to a revocable trust to add St. Joan of Arc.

STEP 3 Meet with your estate planning attorney. If you need to create a will or just update your existing document, you’ll want to get advice from your estate planning attorney.

An attorney can advise you as to the best way to structure your will in order to take care of your loved ones first and then your charitable interests while assuring the best tax benefits.

As a charitable, not-for-profit all bequests to St. Joan of Arc are fully deductible for estate tax purposes.

STEP 4 Contact us.We acknowledge and welcome donors into our Arc Angel Society. Members are invited to special member events and receive special mailings. (We also recognize and respect the wishes of anyone that wishes to remain anonymous.)
