Page 3: January 30-31, 2016...2016/01/31  · them that scriptures, the Word of God is filled in their hearing. Some of them were amazed by his knowledge and others found it too much for them

January 31, 2016 ~ 4th Sunday of Ordinary Time IT IS DIFFICULT TO BE A PROPHET… Very early in his ministry of preaching the Gospel Jesus realized that not everyone can get beyond their prejudices. The people of his hometown of Nazareth welcomed him into their synagogue. He then did the reading and proclaimed to them that scriptures, the Word of God is filled in their hearing. Some of them were amazed by his knowledge and others found it too much for them to believe that a hometown boy could ever achieve so much. St Luke tells us that Jesus did not back off but he used two examples from their own biblical stories of how God was merciful to the widow of Zarephath and the leper Naaman the Syrian. Jesus used these examples to show that God does not play favorites but blesses and gifts people whose hearts are open to receiving his gifts of healing and mercy. The widow received food through Elijah the prophet and Naaman received healing through Elisha the prophet. Both Old Testament prophets were instruments of God’s love and healing. Jesus came among his own people to offer the same gifts. To those who accepted him he gave the promise of new life with him forever. We are sharers in that promise through our baptisms but we also share in Jesus prophetic mission too. We have to be the ones who proclaim without fear the truth of the Gospel today that God sees others with the eyes of love. God sees those in need and asks us today to help them. The lesson is clear for us too. Do not judge by appearance. Do not judge whole cultures by the actions of some. This is particularly relevant today as our country deals with the crisis is Syria, the same Syria of Naaman of the scriptures who came to Israel to seek healing from Elisha the prophet. We have to be prophets today who speak the truth of God’s Word to call others to treat all people with respect and dignity. We cannot be prophets if we only speak what people wish to hear. God calls us to do much more…Fr Joe. Let us often pray the prayer of Pope Francis that he offered for this Jubilee year of Mercy: “ Lord Jesus Christ, send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and you Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaims liberty to captives and the oppressed and restore sight to the blind.”… Fr. Joe WHY WE ARE CATHOLIC We are Catholic because we believe: Many things about Jesus of interest to human curiosity do not figure in the Gospels. Almost nothing is said about his hidden life at Nazareth, and even a great part of his public life is not recounted. What is written in the Gospels was set down there “so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name.” The Catechism of the Catholic Church paragraph 514

YEAR OF MERCY "The signs Jesus works, especially in favor of sinners, the poor, the marginalized, the sick, and the suffering, are all meant to teach mercy. Everything in him speaks of mercy. Nothing in him is devoid of compassion." — Pope Francis
