DEAR PARISHIONERS, Little Tommy was doing very badly in math. His parents had tried everything; tutors, flash cards, special learning centers, in short, everything they could think of. Finally, in a last-ditch effort, they enrolled him in the local Catholic School. After the first day, little Tommy came home with a very serious and somewhat frightened look on his face. He went straight to his room to study. His mother was amazed. She called him down to dinner and to her shock, the minute after he cleaned his plate, he marched back to his room to study again. This went on day after day while the mother tried to understand what was making all the difference. Finally, little Tommy brought home his report card. He quietly laid it on the table and went up to his room to study. With great trepidation, his mom looked at it and to her surprise, he got an “A” in math. She could no longer hold her curiosity. She went to him and asked, "Son, what made you so brilliant in Math? Was it the nuns?" Little Tommy looked at her and shook his head "No." "Well then," she replied, "was it the books, the class size, the discipline, the structure, the uniforms, WHAT was it?" He looked at her and said, "Well, on the first day of school, when I saw that guy nailed to the plus sign, I knew they weren't fooling around.” (This joke is an oldie but a goodie!) “Teaching with authority” seems to be an appropriate way to summarize that joke. Obviously, Tommy felt as though he had better buckle down and work hard on his mathematics lest he pay the consequences. The authority Tommy felt, as was expressed in the joke, was not so much the structure of the Catholic School, the class size, the uniforms, the discipline, the books, or even the nuns but rather it was a “fear factor.” For Tom-my it was the fear of being nailed to a plus sign! “Teaching with authority” is also a very appropriate theme when we reflect upon the Gospel reading for today and it is also a great theme for the beginning of Catholic Schools Week. In the gospel of Mark, we read Jesus entered the synagogue and taught. The people were astonished at his teaching, “for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes.” All were amazed and asked one another, “What is this, a new teaching with authority? He commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him.” As Tommy mentioned to his mother about the nuns so the people of the time felt about Jesus, “They knew he wasn’t fooling around.” Jesus was quite serious. Jesus came among us and he taught with authority and people responded. It is obvious what Jesus taught was not always received with enthusiasm. He came to reveal the truth about God; God’s reign; and God’s expectations of us. Yes, Jesus did teach us about the love and compassion of our creator but he also taught us to fear God. Jesus taught us to fear God and people sat up and took notice. In the gospel even the unclean spirits took notice, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are – the Holy One of God!” When we refer to “Fear of God” we are not talking about what they call “servile fear” as a servant to his/her master which is associated with mental anxiety arising from the punishment God may inflict. What we refer to is what they call “filial fear” as a son or daughter to their parent. This means we possess a dread of offending God who is all good and deserving of all our love. It is a healthy fear, otherwise known as, reverence. This reverential fear is considered as a gift of the Holy Spirit as it enables us to acknowledge God’s greatness, have sorrow at any offense against God and compels us to avoid any occasion of possible offense to God and to God’s people. This fear, according to scripture, is the beginning of wisdom. Jesus came to teach us to “Wise Up to the Ways of God” and was not easy to do in His day and age. It still is not an easy task today as we battle secularism and are continually confronted with challenges that threaten our moral code of conduct and our consistent ethic of life. We are to have a deep and abiding understanding of how God reigns over all things. We are to offer deference to God’s ways as well as reverence for the natu-ral order of God’s design. We learn these things through the Church which has received them from Christ. As we begin Catholic Schools Week we lift up in prayer and support the Holy Family School system partic-ularly in its mission to “Teach with Authority.” We, as a parish, continue to support our Catholic School as the Catholic School should, in return, continue to serve the parish community. We know we have good public schools among us. We shine with the public school in relationship to aca-demic achievements, arts and athletics. However, the one thing sets us apart is faith in Jesus Christ which Catholic schools instills in the hearts and minds of its students, our children. Hopefully this is being reinforced in their homes. The Catholic school shares in the responsibility of Christ and the Church to “Teach with Authority” not so much about mathematics but more importantly about the moral responsibilities of individuals and institutions; about Christ’s mandate in the gospel (loving God and neighbor as self); about the basic tenets of our Catholic Christian faith. At the same time these kids learn about the preferential option for the poor they also learn about the reverential option for Jesus Christ above all else. Public schools don’t do this. The Catholic Church and the Catholic schools teach (or at least they should teach) the fear of God. Again, and for further clarification, I say not fear reminiscent of fire and brimstone sermons or stern priests or habited nuns inflicting corporal punishment by the use of a ruler but rather reverential fear of God and the respect of the natural order of humanity in relationship and under the authority of Christ and His Church. Every classroom of the Catholic school has a crucifix on the wall. Everyday the students are exposed to that religious symbol which encourages them to excel. They can and do excel, hopefully not motivated like little Tommy out of extreme fear of punishment, but rather are encouraged to excel out of extreme reverence and love of our God through Jesus, who when asked how much he loved us, stretched out his arms and said “This much!” as he was nailed to the “plus sign” and died for us. HE TAUGHT AS ONE WITH AUTHORITY In today’s Gospel, the people in the synagogue hear Jesus speak about God, not quoting authority like the Scribes at that time, but speaking from his experience with God in his life, speaking from his heart. This is exactly what a good teacher does, and the best way we can share our faith with others. As we begin Catholic Schools Week, you may remember those teachers who really left an impression on you and your faith journey. They taught through their actions, through their personal relationship with God and with others. They opened their hearts up to their students, just as Jesus did when he taught the world about God. May we all heed the words of today’s refrain from Psalm 95, as we are called to share our faith and love with our neighbor. May we remember the last part of the psalm.

Celebrating Catholic Schools Week As we celebrate National Catholic Schools Week from Jan. 31 through Feb. 6, we thank our parish communities for the commitments you make to our schools each year. Thanks to you, the gift of Catholic education and our mission of forming disciples of Jesus Christ through Catholic educational excellence is a reality. We are truly grateful!

World Day of Prayer Tuesday, February 2, is designated by the Catholic Church as the World Day of Prayer for the Consecrated Life. The Serra Club of Dubuque asks that Catholics remember those men and women who have committed themselves to the consecrated life, to pray for them and to thank them on their special day. May they continue to be inspired by Jesus Christ and respond generously to God's gift of their vocation.

Volunteers Needed The Dubuque for Refugee Children organization is asking for volunteers. Anyone who can occasionally provide a ride to a local medical appointment for an unaccompanied minor is asked to contact R.R.S. Stewart at 612-501-9747.

The Capital Campaign for a

New School is Resuming!

In April, we paused our Building A Visible Presence Capital Campaign

for a new school building due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Campaign Committee has continued to meet and discuss when Resurrection should relaunch. After discussions with the Archdiocese of Dubuque, Holy Family School System and Resurrection Parish leadership, we have decided to resume our campaign! A new school building is too urgent to delay. Numerous parishioners have made commitments, demonstrating a strong enthusiasm for this effort. We are over $1 million in pledges and financial gifts! If you are ready to make a commitment, please do so. Initial funding is essential to paying upfront construction building design and campaign costs. You can make a gift by requesting a commitment card from the parish office. Please contact Deb Kalb at [email protected] or 563-556-7511. We will then mail you a commitment card to fill out.
