My dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

FROM THE PASTOR ’S DESK . . .

Today we celebrate the Epiphany, the time when the Magi brought gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the Newborn King. In many countries this is the time when gifts are exchanged. Please allow me, on this wonderful day, to thank each and every one of you for the many gifts that you bring to the parish. By shar-ing your time, talents and treasures with the Lord here at Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, you help to share in the mission of the Church. I would also like to offer a special thank you for your gener-osity this Christmas and for the Christmas Flower fund. Thank you too to Bea Kraniak who sewed the beautiful new Altar Cloth made from lace brought to us from Abbé Weaver. A special thank you

goes to Kay Gallito and Bonnie Jean Kennedy for watering the poinsettias and keeping them look-ing nice. As we begin this New Year, let us reflect on the manifold gifts that we have and consider how we might share them with Almighty God in the work of the parish. Everyone can and should take an active role in the life of Sacred Heart of Jesus. You will find, like so many of your fellow parishion-ers, what a blessing it is to be active within the life of the Church. Thank you for sharing your gifts with the Church. May God’s blessings be yours throughout this New Year.

As we reflect on the gifts that the Magi brought to our Newborn King, please allow me to thank you for the gifts that you placed before Him this Christmas. Thank you for your continued gener-osity to your parish.

As any father is concerned about his family, so am I concerned

about the well-being of our parish family. I have decided to incor-

porate a bit of financial information for you periodically to help you

understand what it costs to maintain our parish. These are some

of the pressing concerns the Finance Council and I have to deal

ENTHRONEMENT OF

THE SACRED HEART …

If your family would like to have an image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus enthroned in your home, please call Father Ireland (216.382.7601) to arrange a time for him to come and lead this devotion.

Can You “give a hand” with a

donation to the “statue Repair”

Fund?

While the statue of Our Lady is being repaired from her “fall” from her pedestal last summer, we decided to have her hands and the hands of St. Patrick (statue is located by the Rushton Road entrance to the Academy) repaired also.

Both sets of hands have been in need of repair for many years.

WOMEN ’S GUILD . . .

The Women’s Guild monthly meeting will be this coming Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at 7 p.m. in the St. Gregory the Great Meeting Room in the basement of the Rectory. We hope to see some new faces and hear some new ideas. Please come.

BELIEFS ABOUT EPIPHANY SUNDAY . . .

This Sunday is called Epiphany Sunday. It is customary for Catholics to take blessed chalk and use it to bless their homes for the new year. The blessing ritual asks the Prayer Leader to take the blessed chalk and first write the initials of the three Wise Men, connected with Crosses, over the inside of the front door (on the lintel if pos-sible). Next the year is written breaking up the numbers and the year so that they fall on both sides of the initials. It should look like this:

20 C + M + B 13 with the "20 "being the millennium and century, the "C" standing for the first Wise Man, Caspar, the "M" standing for Melchior, the "B" standing for Balthasar, and the "13" standing for the decade

and year.

It is also popularly believed that the Kings' initials also stand for C = "Christus” M = “Mansionem” B = “Benedicat” … translated to “Christ, bless this house.” Included with today’s bulletin is a copy of the Epiphany Blessing and a piece of blessed chalk. Please use this little prayer service to bless your house and all who dwell in it for the coming year.

The Epiphany of the Lord The real "star" of Matthew's Gospel today is not the one that ap-pears in the sky to the Magi. Yes, that star is an important sign-it led the Magi from the east to Jerusalem where they learned of the prophecy about Bethlehem. That star led them to the home of the Child they would worship. But this Child is the real star of the Gospel story. He comes into the world. In the midst of conflict and division, exemplified by Herod's distrust and fear, Jesus comes as the newborn king to save his people from their sins. As Matthew tells it, Jesus is the One Who unites faithful Jew and believing Gentile bringing to-gether all those who would seek the truth and follow His teaching. The feast of the Epiphany celebrates the manifestation of Christ to the world. His revelation means that people must choose whether to follow him or not. Herod had that choice. So did the Magi. Men and women from every race and nation come to Christ. Once they choose to follow Christ, they become brothers and sisters of one another. Christ unites all believers in a common experience, His call to love.

MAKING NEW YEAR ’S RESOLUTIONS?? . . .

Can you find some time to give to your parish? Do you have a gift to share that you are keeping hidden?

Do you long to see the face of God? Seeing the face of God is the easy part. He is present for us in the faces of all of our brothers and sisters in the Body of Christ. He is all the races, all the genders, all the nationalities, all the levels of education and intelligence, all the physical and mental abilities and limitations that are part of the human condition. All we need to do is turn to Him, and through the Body of Christ we will grow in a deeper understanding of who God is. Now, whether I have a particular gift to share or some time to give as a volunteer … well, that seems to be the biggest dilemna of our day. For some, it would be as simple as spending some time in prayer at home or in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. For oth-ers it would be a recommitment to regular Mass attendance. Once we grow closer to God in His people and His sacraments, the easier it is to find time to give to the building of His kingdom here in South Euclid. As we begin this New Year … may we look carefully at the time and gifts we have and how we use them. Perhaps we can find some time or talents that would help the parish save on the costs of hiring someone to do a job you could offer to do for free.
