is a new position on the J-model.Since there is no flight engineeron the J-model, I am more or lessan advisor or a quick referenceuntil we land. I don’t have any setin-flight duties but I definitelypull my weight.”

The flight into Afghanistancarried both the first J-modelcrew and last H-model crew.

Four months from now, thefirst J-model crew will returnhome to Canada and be replacedby another crew, while the H-model crew will return home fromAfghanistan permanently.

“I’m so proud of all them – thelegacy and J-model crews,” saidLCol Keiver. “All of them havecontinually stepped up to theplate, the legacy folks havingserved in Afghanistan for almost10 years.

ABOUT THE CC-130J HERCULES

The CC-130J provides additionalcapability and reliability, and willhelp ensure our continued successin operations thereby helping theAir Force to meet its goal of beingthe “best in class” for its size, whileremaining highly interoperablewith our allies.

The first CC-130J Herculestactical aircraft arrived in Canadaon June 4, 2010, six months aheadof the original scheduled deliverydate.

The Air Force team demon-strated its agility, flexibility andprofessional capabilities by ready-ing the aircraft and its crews fordeployment to Afghanistan in lessthan seven months.

Training, maintenance andoperation procedures needed to be

adapted to the specific character-istics of this aircraft, while ensur-ing an efficient and effectiveimplementation schedule that willfacilitate safe, effective, and sus-tained operations.

The new CC-130J Herculesaircraft will belong to the TacticalAviation Unit (Task ForceCanuck), which is part of the JointTask Force Afghanistan AirWing.

This tactical aircraft will beused for missions such as intra-theatre transport of troops andcargo, battlefield illumination, anddrops of combat packages. A sec-ond CC-130J Hercules aircraftwill deploy to Afghanistan in latespring 2011.

All 17 CC-130Js will be basedat 8 Wing Trenton, Ont. alongwith the future Air MobilityTraining Centre that will housethe equipment and personnelrequired to train the operators andmaintainers of the CC-130JHercules aircraft.

Search & Rescue Update

Missions for 2010: 195 Missions for Dec: 13 Persons rescued: 69

424 Squadron would like to wish all a Happy New Year, and hope everyonehad a great holiday season

We were involved in rescuing 57 stranded motorists from Hwy 402 nearSarnia to warming centres. We had four Griffon crews flying missions forthree days as well as a Herc crew or two being used as a communication plat-form, making the job a little easier.

After all was back to normal, our crews got back to business. Our Griffoncrew was tasked to fly “top cover” and medevac support for 21 sailors from theMV Herman Scholning who had taken ill. They were all transported to shoreby the pilot vessel JW Cooper and then to hospital. Our crew was released andreturned to Trenton.

Our Herc crew was up next, tasked to investigate a EPIRB (EmergencyPosition-Indicating Radio Beacon) that was going off in the area of Hamilton. The signal was traced to the city of Hamilton where it was eventually locatedin a delivery truck.

Until next week, stay safe!

Here we are in Afghanistan atChristmas, and I have to tell you thatit’s wonderful to see how generousthe people of Canada are to us.

Cards, drawings, letters with per-sonal messages, gifts, delicacies, toi-letries, books and other things toonumerous to mention — pour in bythe thousands. We are absolutelyconvinced by this great bounty thatour fellow Canadians are thinking ofus while we are far away from thosewe love, and who love us.

Many people here are hard atwork distributing the cards, lettersand parcels to the troops on theground in forward positions. Wewant everyone to benefit from all thisabundance.

The Christmas cards, in particu-lar, put some colour into camp life. They cover many walls in our build-ings and the Canadian gymnasium,

banishing the everyday drabness. We are doing all we can to reply to

as many of our correspondents aspossible, not just individuals, but alsochurches, schools and organizations. In token of acknowledgement, a cardof thanks is on its way, signed in per-son by Lieutenant-Colonel SébastienBouchard, the commander of theNational Support Element (NSE),and by Chief Warrant Officer GillesGodbout, the NSE RegimentalSergeant-Major.

Finally, on behalf of all theCanadian Forces members deployedin Afghanistan, I must thank eachand every one of you who took theinitiative to send us a card or a giftfor Christmas.

Love truly knows boundaries, andit soothes away the difficulties thatcan be encountered here. Every pack-age we receive is an outward and vis-ible sign of this inward and invisibleaffection.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for all your support.

Thanks, from the bottom of our hearts

If you are one of the 96 percent Canadians who made aNew Years’ Resolution onJanuary 1, you may have set ahealth related goal.

Research shows that 20 percent of Canadians achieve theirresolutions.

You can be one of them bytaking SMART steps to achieveyour resolutions.

Resolutions are all aboutgoal setting. SMART goals areSpecific, Measurable, Achie-vable, Relevant and Trackable.

Specific: They define exactlywhat you want to achieve.

Measurable: They includeclear benchmarks to know thatyou are succeeding.

Achievable: They providechallenge, but are still withinreason.

Relevant: They are impor-tant to YOU.

Trackable: They include away to record progress.

An example of a SMARTgoal would be: “I will use mypedometer to record my stepseach day and increase my stepsby 10 per cent each week until Iam taking an average of 10,000steps per day.”

Goals can help to increasemotivation by providing us withdirection and build our confi-dence with increased feelings ofsuccess when they are met.

So what happens whenmotivation starts to fade? Thatis the time to revisit your goal.

Sometimes goals feel too big

to tackle or take so long toachieve that it is difficult tostay focused.

Consider breaking largegoals into smaller “bite size”pieces and determine if yourgoals match your preferences.

Is it motivating for you toset goals slightly higher thanyou are likely to achieve?

Perhaps you prefer goals thatare modest and can easily bemet or exceeded, or you mayprefer to have your goals matchyour performance.

By thinking about your pref-erences and adjusting yourgoals to fit, you can rejuvenateyour motivation to achievethem.

Be SMART about your reso-lutions to help you reach yourgoals for 2011!

How to be SMART about New Year’s resolutions

Parfois, certains objectifs noussemblent trop ambitieux.

A worker received anelectric shock on a pieceof equipment he wasusing. He was notinjured, and he did notreport the incident.

A few days lateranother worker alsoreceived a shock from thesame defective equip-ment, and again did notreport the problem.

Within days a thirdworker also received anelectrical shock whichkilled him.

This true story illus-trates what can happenwhen we ignore closecalls in the work place. Aclose call is a chance toidentify a hazard andcorrect it before someoneis seriously injured orkilled.

We have all had manyexperiences with closecalls (also known as freewarnings) in our every-day lives. The best thingwe can do is to pay atten-tion to them and learnfrom them.

For example, most ofus have slipped whilerushing down a stairway. We may have caughtourselves before falling,

and then resolve to slowdown in the future.

Another example ispulling out to pass whendriving and being facedwith an on-coming car.

We quickly pull backinto our own lane, andtell ourselves next timewe will make sure it issafe before we try to pass.

In both instances, there was the potentialfor a serious accident butwe were lucky. We havelearned something by theclose call, and will proba-bly be more aware in thefuture.

Close calls in theworkplace serve the samefunction. They give us anopportunity to recognizethat something is wrongand to do somethingabout it before someonegets hurt.

There are a number ofcommon reasons for notreporting close calls. Oneis that we don’t want toget into trouble with asupervisor or fellowworker. Another reasonmight be embarrassment.

Nobody likes to admitto being part of an acci-dent or close call. Or wemight find it is too muchtrouble to report it -forms to fill out andinterviews to endure.

Another possible rea-son is that reporting anincident might ruin ourcrew’s safety record, caus-ing the loss of an incen-tive prize.

Of course, none ofthese reasons amount tomuch when you considerthat reporting a close call

might save a co-workerfrom serious injury ordeath.

Imagine what itwould be like to watch abuddy die because of ahazard which you knewabout but did not report.

Think about it - whatif you were the only onewho knew materials werebeing stacked unsafely, because just last weekyou had to jump out ofthe way of a fallingobject?

How would you feel ifanother worker wascrushed and killed whenthe stack collapsed again?

When an accidentoccurs and someone isinjured or killed, chancesare someone else knewthat the hazards existed.Think about that.

Someone else proba-bly had a hunch that thebrakes were worn out, orthe emergency exit wasblocked, or the chemicalcontainer was in a posi-tion to be knocked overor whatever.

How do you thinkthat person will feel afteran accident occurs?Chances are, he’ll wishhe had reported the haz-ard.

A number of companieswhich have enviable safetyrecords say that they treatclose call incidents as if theywere fatalities. They saythat the aim is not to placeblame, but to figure out thebasic cause of the accident.By treating close calls asseriously as accidents, wecan have fewer tragedies.

Close calls reflect accident hazards

January 9 – January 15Theme of the week: With Mercury moving into the sign ofambition Capricorn, our thoughts become more focused onthe goals we have for this new year. Notably, Mars movesinto the sign of the rebel Aquarius, bringing us a new senseof spontaneity. It will be a great week, enjoy!

ARIES (March 21-April 19): You recently faced somedifficult truths about yourself. It led to a major shift inthe way you interact with the world. Be patient and stayin the process. Soon, you will have renewed hope inyour dreams. You are on the path to living with moreoptimism than ever.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): A bonanza of good for-tune comes unexpectedly. However, you need to con-sciously strengthen the good news you hear by dwellingon it. Your default may be cautious, if not pessimistic.Overcome it to create positive momentum.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): You have the ability toeloquently state your case. You may wonder about yourpower to be persuasive. The most compelling words willcome from a spirit of spontaneity. Stay present and youwill make a strong impression.

CANCER ( June 21-July 22): You may be uncertain, but there is an umbrella of protection with you. Thereare few things you could do wrong right now. Theremay be fear that the good things now in your life areelusive. You care, that’s great, but keep making progress.

LEO ( July 23-Aug. 22): What matters more, that yourboss likes it, or your supporters? You may be asked tomake a few slight modifications, but may worry thechanges will take the spirit out of your work. You’ll haveto find the middle ground. You can still keep theessence while minding the logistics.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): You don’t need to startfresh, and you certainly don’t need to reinvent thewheel. There are footprints in front of you, showingexactly the path to walk. Trust the tried and true way.Your desire for a new beginning can be channelledwithin it.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): There is a whole industrybuilt around teaching people the virtue and skill of timemanagement. As long as there are some of us who feelthere isn’t enough time, we will seek its secrets. You havea clear priority. Soon, you will have the energy to staywith it through completion.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): You are part of amachine. There doesn’t have to be anything bad aboutit. Times like this ask you to put your individual con-cerns to the side and consider the whole team. Makesure you are well oiled and ticking along as your partasks.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): The more you donow, the less there will be to do later. You may have con-flicting desires. You are growing impatient with tediousdetails. Another part was to throw out the practical infavour of a big adventure. Handle what you must nowand plan the getaway you crave.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Living the dailygrind can lead some people to go numb. We becomeespecially prone when we feel unfulfilled but don’t wantto acknowledge it, because the consequences would betoo great. You have had enough of pretending. Thetruth puts power of change in your hands.

AQUARIUS ( Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Mars will enter yoursign at the end of this week. Until then, you’ve got aslow build-up of impatience that you may not knowhow to resolve. Let your dreams lead the way.Document their vivid details. Soon, you will have thedetermination to take the required action.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): You are going for goldwith enthusiasm. Soon, your inclinations will changetowards a more reflective mood. Until you get there, continue to give your all to the dreams that mattermost. There are countless blessings on your side.

Chaplain ServicesJanuary 7, 2011

Planning to get married? If you are planning to get married in the Roman Catholic Church, on Base or off Base, the Catholic party must contact first the Wing Chaplain’s Offices at 613-392-2811, Ext 2490 to beginthe pre-nuptial process six months prior to the wedding day. That is to provide you with time to take the pre-marriage class (which must be attended) and the padre to complete the marriagefile, which must be sent to the Military Ordinariate’s Chancery Office no less than three months prior to the wedding day. Please, keep in mind that pre-marriage classes are not offered fromMay to September. This is applicable to all members falling under Military Ordinariate’s jurisdiction; that means for all CF personnel and DND employees who are RC. The latter have thechoice between their Wing Chaplain’s Pastoral Services and their civilian parish’s. If a Catholic party wants to get married under the Rite of a particular Protestant denomination, the above stillapplies.

If the marriage file is not processed on time, the Wing Chaplain’s office will not be held accountable. Three months is the minimum time to process a canonical marriage file (to Ottawaand from the church of your wedding). If you belong to a Protestant denomination and you would like to get married at the Wing Chapel, you are asked to contact the chaplain of your denom-ination at the earliest convenient time.

Light bulb decoder + eco-friendly

(NC)—Looking to save some green on lightingbut confused by all the light bulbs on the mar-ket today? One of the most sustainable invest-ments you can make in your home today is toreplace your inefficient bulbs with eco-friendlylighting. Advances in technology have led the way tobetter options but have left some consumers inthe dark.

Here's a little primer to help light your way: Incandescent: This is a standard bulb; one of

the first household bulbs brought to mar-ket…and currently found in almost every retailstore. Although they cast a nice warm shade of

light, and can be used with a dimmer, they arenot energy efficient. The environmental con-cerns of consumers and government regulationsare slowly phasing them out of existence.

Halogen: This is technically an incandescentbulb, but has three features that make themsuperior to standard incandescent bulbs. Theyare brighter, whiter, and last longer. The energysaving option available from Philips; theHalogena Energy Saver (HES) saves up to 30per cent in energy costs and provides a longerlife than standard incandescent bulbs.

Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs): Theseare a very energy efficient lighting option usingup to 75 per cent less energy than incandescentbulbs; some can last for years before you need tochange them. They're slightly more expensivethan incandescent bulbs but since their life spanis so much longer, they're more economical.Stick to quality products like Philips family ofEnergySaver options of indoor and outdoorbulbs.

Light Emitting Diodes (LED): Thisadvanced new technology delivers outstandingefficiency and extra long life without the mer-cury/lead content, UV or heat. Energy savingsfrom these innovative bulbs is up to 80 per cent. They provide a bright, white light, are nowdimmable and will last longer than any otherbulb on the market. Again, lighting experts likePhilips have an amazing selection of LEDproducts to enhance the home, save you energyand money.
