The Journey of the Magi-Our spiritual journey

On the feast of the Epiphany of the Lord, let us reflect on the journey of the magi, which represents the spir-itual journey of each one of us towards the fullness of truth.

The word epiphany, from the Greek word "epiphainein," which means “reveal”, divine manifes-tation to humanity. The Gospel tells us these wise men came from the East, unlike the Jews who antici-pated the coming of the Messiah, do not know the prophecy but have received the light of faith from on high, illumined by the bright star. They responded to the invitation through concrete actions: prepared the gifts and set on! The journey to look for Christ, by diligently following the guiding heavenly light. There were moments of doubt and confusion on the adven-ture, but they did not hesitate to ask for help in con-sulting King Herod to reach their desired destina-tion. Finally, they arrived, seeing Jesus in the man-ger surrounded by his beloved parents, the shep-herds, and animals, they bowed down to adore Him, offered Him their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And then they went back home by taking a different path as instructed in their dream.

What does all of this mean for us today?

Like the magi, we must be opened to God’s sign; we must willing to act decisively – walk in faith, and offer the gift of ourselves to God; we must persevere on the journey to worship Christ despite challenges and hardship; and we must willing to change, “to go back by a different route”, we must get rid of whatever is in opposition to the divine will in our lives.

The liturgical season of Christmas begins with the vigil Masses on Christmas Eve and concludes on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. During this season, we celebrate the birth of Christ into our world and into our hearts, and reflect on the gift of salvation that is born with him…including the fact that he was born to die for us.

The Santo Nino (Holy Child) is a Roman Catholic title of Jesus Christ associated with a religious vested statue of the Infant Child Jesus, venerated by the Filipino Catholics who believe it to be miraculous. It is the oldest religious Christian image in the Philip-pines. On April 15, 1521, the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan arrived and planted the cross on the shores of Cebu, Phil-ippines, claiming the territory for Spain. He presented the image of the child Jesus, the Santo Nino, as baptismal gift to Hara Ami-han (who later became Queen Juana), wife of Rajah (King) Humabon. Along with the rulers of the island, the natives were also baptized to the Roman Catholic Church, hence the start of the acceptance of Roman Catholicism in the Philippines. At the mo-ment of receiving the holy image, it was said that Queen Juana danced with joy bearing this image of the child Jesus. With the

other natives following her example, this moment was regarded as the first Sinulog.

The word Sinulog comes from the Cebuano adverb “sulog” which roughly means “like water current movement”; it describes the forward-backward movement of the Sinulog dance. This dance dramatizes the coming of the Spaniards and presentation of the Santo Nino to the Queen. A popular theme among the Sinulog dances is Queen Juana holding the Santo Nino in her arms and using it to bless her people who are often afflicted by sickness caused by demons and other evil spirits. In Cebu, Philippines, the Sinulog is an annual 9-day festival of street parades with participants in bright colored costumes dancing to the rhythm of drums, trumpets and native gongs. The festival commemorates the Filipino people’s pagan origin and their acceptance of Roman Catholi-

cism.

During the Spanish colonial era of the Philippines, the Santo Nino, was given the highest military rank of Captain-General. For this reason, the image wears a red cape, symbolizing the rank of a general in military boots. Its complete given historical rank is “Celestisimo Capitan General de las Esfuerzas Espanolas in Filipinas” (The Most Heavenly Captain General of the Spanish Forc-es in the Philippines.) The Holy Child’s feast is liturgically celebrated every 3rd Sunday of January, during which devotees carry a Santo Nino image onto the street fiesta dancing celebrations. The image is one of the most beloved and recognizable cultural icons in the Philippines. In the 18th century, Pope Innocent XIII approved the special texts for use during the local feast of the San-to Nino in the Philippines, followed by the Sinulog festival. In 1965, Pope Paul VI bestowed his Apostolic blessing on the image by also making its shrine in Cebu as a Minor Basilica. In 1981, St. Pope John Paul II gave his papal endorsement for the image in his Mass for Families. The devotion to the Holy Child of Cebu shares its worldwide veneration of the Infant Jesus of Prague. At St. Anthony Claret Church, the celebration this year will be held on January 14, 2018 at the 11:00 am Sunday Mass to be followed by

a Procession and Fellowship. Source: Wikipedia
