NIC NOTES

Dear Parishioners,

With the Solemnity of the Epiphany, we close the Christmas Season. Here is another fine example of how Christmas songs can be catechetical:

THE ORIGIN OF “THE TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS”

“The Twelve Days of Christmas” was written in England as one of the “Catechism songs” to help young children learn the tenets of their faith—a memory aid. At a time when to be caught with anything in “writing” indicating adherence to the Catholic faith could not only get you imprisoned, it could get you hanged.

The song gifts are hidden meanings to the teachings of the faith. The “True Love” mentioned in the song doesn’t refer to an earthly suitor, it refers to God Himself. The “me” who receives the presents refers to every baptized person. The “partridge in a pear tree” is Jesus Christ, the Son of God. In the song, Christ is symbolically presented as a mother partridge which feigns injury to decoy predators from her helpless nestlings, much in memory of the expression of Christ’s sadness over the fate of Jerusalem: “Jerusalem! Jerusalem! How often would I have sheltered thee under my wings as a hen does her chicks, but you would not have it so…”

The other symbols mean the following:

2 Turtle doves: The Old and New Testaments

3 French hens: The Theological Virtues - Faith, Hope, and Charity

4 Calling birds: The 4 Gospels /The 4 Evangelists

5 Golden rings: The first 5 books of the Old Testament - the “Pentateuch,” which gives the history of man’s fall from grace

6 Geese a-laying: The 6 days of Creation

7 Swans a-swimming: The 7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit or the 7 Sacraments

8 Maids a-milking: The 8 Beatitudes

9 Ladies dancing: The 9 Fruits of the Holy Spirit

10 Lords a-leaping: The 10 Commandments

11 Pipers piping : The 11 faithful Apostles

12 Drummers drumming: The 12 points of doc-trine in the Apostle’s Creed

Remember, we are now in the Twelve days of Christmas. Celebrate!

Have a Blessed and Happy New Year!

May God, through the intercession of St. Helena, bless us.

Love and Prayers,

Msgr. Nicolo

SPIRITUAL ADOPTION

The New Year is here and so is another month for your spiritually adopted baby! During January your baby will celebrate his/her 4th month—13th to 16th weeks of life! This time of a baby’s young life is the 2nd trimester of pregnancy. The baby’s nostrils and toenails are now visible and the baby is very active, practicing movement by doing somersaults and kicking. But since he/she is only about 5 inches long, mom can’t feel the movement yet. He/she is able to suck his/her thumb and has a very firm grip. Please remember to pray every day for the life of this tiny baby, which you have spiritually adopted: O my Jesus, by the intercession of Mary, Your Mother, who bore You so lovingly, and of St. Joseph, strong man of faith, who protected You both, I pray to You for the life of the unborn child I have spiritu-ally adopted, who is in danger of abortion. Please give the parents of this child the grace and courage they need to bring their baby to birth. Amen.

CATHE’S CORNER Just before Thanksgiving, the students in Mrs. Mack's third grade explored the history of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City via the book Balloons Over Broadway by Melissa Sweet, and also through photographs, student experiences, and video. Upon returning from Thanksgiving break (and having watched or been present at the parade), the students embarked on a S.T.E.M. project which was hinged on questions such as: What kind of balloon would you create for a parade? How could you get balloons to "fly over Broadway" in our classroom without using helium? Can you create some type of system to "fly" our balloons? And finally, how could we organize all of our balloons to recreate a parade in our classroom?

For one week, individuals and teams of students, using only one or two party balloons, Sharpie markers, various paper scraps, paper clips, and string, worked through the brainstorming, planning, creating, and recreating process to create the most fascinating, themed balloons and most incredible 3-Macy's After Thanksgiving Day Parade! Some of the balloons in the parade included "Wonder," Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Kittycorn, a moving caterpillar, SantaDog, Emoji Santa, and many more! Every member of the class played a role in the parade: from parade crowd on "Broadway", to balloon handlers, to lining up and spacing the balloons, to making sure the Santa balloon (and Christmas songs) ended the parade. Such amazing creativity was floating around and over the desks of 3M this day, leading us down Broadway and straight into the Christmas season!

This was an activity that these children will remember for years to come! Ever grateful for our amazing teachers whose creativity and enthusiasm light the way for our children!

Have a good week!

Love,

Sister Cathe

JANUARY 7, 2018 THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD

MADELEINE’S MESSAGE Our Level Three PREP classes under the guidance of Dolores Bird and Debra Erthal gather in prayer, exploration, and activity allowing each child to focus on the teachings and lives of, Jesus, the saints, and holy people. Through shared learning, the children are growing as caring, faithful, community members. The children learn about: † The Blessed Trinity: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit; † Jesus, the Son of God who became one of us; † The Church and its history and teachings; † The Mass and the Sacraments; † Our call to discipleship. The children learn how Catholics live their faith and celebrate God‘s love. They learn that they can celebrate God‘s love like the saints they read about. They explore their own lives, their relationships with Jesus, family, and community members. Thanks to Dolores Bird and Debra Erthal for all they do for our Level Three PREP students. Have a great week! Madeleine

KEN’S CACHE Today, the Feast of the Epiphany, is one of the Church’s official holy days of obligation. The fact escapes many American Catholics, because here the observance is transferred to Sunday, which means the feast can be observed anytime between January 2 and 8. Not so everywhere. In Italy, for instance, this is not only a holy day, but the day on which La Befana, an old lady similar to Santa Claus, brings children their Christmas-tide gifts. A few years ago, the Italian Parliament, seeking to reduce the number of national holidays, persuaded the church to move the observance of Epiphany to Sunday, as in the United States. There was a huge uproar and such lack of cooperation by the people that government and church had to abandon the experiment. Epiphany means manifestation, and that’s the key to the feast. The Epiphany commemorates the mani-festations of the divinity of Christ – in the adoration of the baby Jesus by the Magi, and in his baptism in the Jordan by John the Baptist. In the Western Church the Magi element long enjoyed the greater emphasis, but with the tighter incorporation of the Magi story into that of Christmas, the baptism element began to come more to the fore. There’s logic to this. The feast is of Eastern origins, and the manifestation or declaration of Christ’s divinity in his baptism is an emphasis that has been present in the Eastern church since the feast’s adoption between 380 and 430. Incidentally, the Epiphany is not the only one of the church’s official holy days of obligation to be moved into a separate category of observance by the American Church. Corpus Christi, a feast designated for the Thursday following Trinity Sunday, is observed in this country on a Sunday, while the feast of St. Joseph (March 19) and Sts. Peter and Paul (June 29) are marked on their appointed days but with no Mass obligation entailed.

God Bless! Deacon Ken

ST. MARTHA CLEANERS

We are Seeking New Volunteers

We have a current need for approximately 2 volunteers to assist us

in the cleaning of the Church and Chapel. You will be scheduled for one Friday a month. For additional infor-mation, please contact Gina Malony at

the Parish Office, during business hours 610-275-7711.

COLLECTING THE TITHE We are need of a few volunteers to help collect the Sunday Envelopes at our Saturday and Sunday Masses. If interested or would like more infor-mation please contact Gina Malony at the Parish Office (610-275-7711).

Do you tithe electronically? Thank you very much to your continuing support of our Parish! Please remember the importance of placing your empty envelope in the collection basket each weekend. Simply check the electronic donation box and write “empty” on the amount line. Mass attendance is recorded by our Parish and the only means of we have of knowing how often parishioners come to Mass is through the use of envelopes. Should you ever be asked to be a sponsor for Confirmation or a godparent for Baptism, your eligibility is based on the fact that you are registered in a parish and are a practicing Catholic.

If you are considering electronic tithing, it is very simple. Check the “Parish Giving” link on our website www.sainthelena-centersquare.net to set up an account for regular contributions. You are able to set up any giving schedule that works for you.
