This Sunday, the Church celebrates the Epiphany. If someone asks what does the Epiphany mean? You may have some of the following answers. First of all, Epiphany is the feast of the manifestation of our Lord in the world. Furthermore, Epiphany is a day when the Lord reveals Himself not only to the Jews but also to the Gentiles, especially those who were far from Him. In addition, the Epiphany is called the feast of the adoration of Jesus by the wise men, the Magi. Overall, the Epiphany is a day when Jesus Christ shows Himself, in the presence of the magi and as God’s Gift given to humanity.

Christ shows himself to the wise men and they give Him thanks with gifts of frankincense, gold, and myrrh. They also honor Jesus with their time, talent and treasure.

As the Lord reveals Himself in the world through the Magi, and they honor Him with gifts; the Lord continues to reveal Himself to us, at our family, in our community and everywhere. From the Nativity to the Epiphany, Jesus comes to be part of our life. In Christmas, we give thanks to the Father for giving us Jesus; we share and exchange gifts with family, friends, and our community. In the feast of the Epiphany, the wise men give gifts of frankincense, gold, and myrrh. What can you give Jesus as he becomes part of your life? And how can you honor His presence - The Epiphany - in your daily activities?

You may say, I don’t have anything to offer Jesus. But, what Jesus wants from you is your time, talent and treasure participating in the Sunday Masses, show Him your love and pray to Him unceasingly. Give Him your plans. Let His light guide you and His star lead you to where He wants you, and He will be your Epiphany now and for ever.

PASTOR’S MESSAGE

For me it always helps to put things in some sort of historical perspective. When I studied Theology and Spirituality, I always took the historical studies track because I believe that we cannot understand ourselves today unless we understand where we have come from or what the events and forces were that shaped us. This is also very true of a church community like Saint Joan of Arc. We began at a time when the future of Boca Raton was not very clear. The Archdiocese of Miami of which we were a part sold our property to Boca Raton for a cemetery because no one thought that Boca would grow very large. Addison Mizner, the famous architect and developer, went bankrupt planning housing developments that never sold. Thankfully our courageous Founding Mothers and Fathers had a more hopeful vision and they worked hard to make it come true.

In 1956, the first Mass for St. Joan of Arc parish was celebrated in the Jalbert’s Aerological Laboratories building and then our pilgrim Church moved to a former WW II warehouse across the street. The red brick faced Church was dedicated as a “provisional” Church by Bishop Coleman Carroll in 1961. From the start as the parish grew rapidly, the hope for a more spacious Church grew also. This hope was realized in the dedication in 1988 of the new St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church. Divine providence was not trusted to entirely build and develop our parish and school because according to early records handyman carpentry, card parties and bingo also played an important role. Upon the building of the new Church the “provisional” St. Joan of Arc Church was significantly renovated, an addition added, and it became our parish social center: Mercy Center.

Parishioner initiative and hard work has continued to characterize our history. During the past four years, careful planning has gone on in order to position our parish for present growing needs and for future ones that we can only imagine. The Journey Forward pastoral plan ( the work of some 800 participants) has guided the development of new programs, ministries and social activities. It also developed a plan for building a new and spatially adequate Mercy Center that would serve educational, spiritual, and social needs of our over 3,500 households. Another important goal was to provide our growing school with an Arts Conservatory that would serve our drama, dance, music and fine arts programs. Again the same historical sensitivity to changing times and pastoral needs was evident in a very reality based effort to be well positioned for fast moving times and a growing population. The Planning Teams did not exactly predict the Boca housing boom we are experiencing but we knew "things were a changing" in paradise.

Now that we enter 2017, we experience an emotional moment when a building we are familiar with for many years must give way to another purpose for our land. Just as the first St. Joan of Arc Church once gave way to the multi-purposed Mercy Center, so, today, this land will become a safe, enclosed playing field for our parish youth and young adults (perhaps even for some older adults as well). Because we did not have enough land to gain the City Boca Raton's approval to expand the footprint of the first Mercy Center and because it would not structurally support a second floor, the difficult decision was made by pastoral and lay leadership to replace it. The New Mercy Center in a respectful and beautiful way incorporates a prominent exterior Cross, the original large stained glass window and the Art Deco figure of Saint Joan of Arc that once graced the original St. Joan of Arc Church. They are symbolic reminders to us of our faith filled and vital past and also of a future that is energized by the Holy Spirit and the spiritual life, worship, ministries and community life of our parishioners. The same concern for pastoral and faith formation values that has characterized our parish life since 1956 is alive and evident as Tradition guides and adapts to the future.

We anticipate with great joy a dedication in March of the new Mercy Center, athletic field, renovated Gazebo and a fun-filled and noisy playground. All of these orchestrated components together tell the story of a parish born of a strong Catholic Tradition and moving into an exciting and challenging future.

- Msgr. Michael D. McGraw

FROM THE SJA MULTICULTURAL MINISTRY DIRECTORFor the last four years we have heard a lot about a “Journey Forward”, a journey that will bring about many changes to our religious and spiritual environment, the place where we come to pray for our loved ones who may need medical attention or special educational resources for our children where they can learn and develop in a safe and sacred environment. This is the place where we can bare our souls to our creator. Who has not stood in wonder at the hundreds of mothers and fathers who dutifully make the daily pilgrimage to Saint Joan of Arc to leave their children in the care of our teachers who share our values and who have strived to produce, in our children, the academic excellence that a Catholic education is known for throughout the United States.

Our parish lay and religious leaders have announced the needs of a “Capital Campaign”; a campaign that has touched every member of our parish. Diligent, persistent and tireless effort on the part of the development and communication offices has taken place during the last four years, a lot of prayer and many sacrifices have been made. Many members and friends of our parish have contributed to make a dream come true.

Like a tree bearing fruits, the capital campaign is beginning to yield. Now, arriving to the Saint Joan of Arc parking lot, we find brand new, beautiful buildings that have sprung up as if overnight as a new parish campus stands promising. Promises that have been kept as new faithful are coming to discover in the beauty of the magnificent reality that we are all children of God, that we all belong to His family and that we have a “home for a large family” where we are welcome to come to

celebrate, in fellowship together, to console and minister to each other, to grow in love and faith and to have fun together.

But we are also finding much more than a building raised and a new campus created. We can hear the voices and laughter of children filling the air. What we have built together is their future and that of their children just as our predecessors did for us with their sacrifices and love.

Hope and life continues to flourish into our parish. Life always wins when we do things for the greater Glory of God.

LETTER FROM BISHOP GERALD M. BARBARITO

The annual collection in support of our Catholic schools will take place next weekend on January 14th and 15th, just a few weeks shy of Catholic Schools Week, which will take place in our Diocese and around the nation January 29th through February 4th. The national theme is "Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.” Through our Catholic schools, we are able to provide an excellent education and pass on our Catholic beliefs to our young people in a context that affects every aspect of their growth and development as persons, and assures them future success after graduation–in life, in business, in their community and most importantly in their faith.

As part of our Strategic Vision 2020, it has been our goal to support the mission of our schools by making Christ and our Gospel values present each day to all those who desire a Catholic education for their children, regardless of socio-economic status, race, ethnicity or religious beliefs. The need to increase the funding available for needs-based tuition assistance to families has never been greater. Therefore, the Diocese will now allocate fundsraised through this Second Collection directly to the schools to be used for tuition assistance through the Lumen Christi Scholarships.

The Diocese of Palm Beach is blessed to have 19 Catholic schools and preschools with more than 500 dedicated educators, serving more than

6,000 students. The academic curriculum at our schools is strong, and continues to grow stronger as more programs are added, these programs emphasize Catholic schools as communities of faith, knowledge and service.

In 2016 this annual collection raised $133,115.16 for our Catholic schools. I am grateful to the people of the Diocese for their support of our efforts to provide scholarships to children who could not otherwise afford to attend Catholic schools. Catholic-school education is a priority in the life of the Diocese of Palm Beach. Your continued support of our diocesan Catholic schools is very much needed and appreciated.

With gratitude for your continued generosity and every prayerful wish, I am

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Gerald M. Barbarito Bishop of Palm Beach

If we could conceive of a single elixir to improve the physical and mental health of millions of Americans - at no personal cost - what value would our society place on it?

Going a step further, if research quite conclusively showed that when consumed just once a week, this concoction would reduce mortality by 20% to 30% over a 15-year period, how urgently would we want to make it publicly available?

The good news is that this miracle drug – religion, and more specifically regular church attendance – is already in

reach of most Americans. In fact, there's a good chance it's just a short drive away.

Indeed, health and religion are very much connected. Professor VanderWeele's new research with colleagues at Harvard University – building on more than 20 years of prior work in this area – suggests that attending religious services brings about better physical and mental health. Adults who do so at least once a week versus not at all have been shown to have a significantly lower risk of dying over the next decade and a half. The results have

been replicated in enough studies and populations to be considered quite reliable.

This science does not endorse one faith over another or suggest what society is to do with such information. But there are two opportunities - one societal and one personal - for good to come from this work. The news media, the academy and the broader public could use this new understanding to weigh religion's greater societal value. And for individuals, this research provides a not-so-subtle invitation to reconsider what religion can do for them.

The draw for many may be meaningful liturgy, perhaps a sense of forgiveness and ultimately, salvation. Few would say they come for good health. Why might attending services improve one's health? The Nurses' Health Study finds that social support is critical, yet this accounts for only about a quarter of the effect. Other mechanisms seem to be important as well, possibly due to behavioral norms at services. For instance, those attending are less likely to smoke, or more likely to quit altogether, producing significant health benefits.

Religious service attendance affects mental health, too. The research at Harvard and elsewhere indicates that, possibly due to a message of faith or hope, those who attend services are more optimistic and have lower rates of depression. The research from Harvard as also shown that attendance protects against suicide. Others have found that churchgoers report having a greater purpose in life and developing more self-control-both mechanisms by which service attendance might affect health.

Today, a greater percentage of Americans are choosing no religion at all, and we are witnessing the erosion of religious institutions. For some, church attendance is seen as quaint and outdated, and "spirituality" has become a code word for, "No thanks, I'm sleeping in on Sunday." What this go-it-alone movement will usher out, it seems, is the benefits of being in the pews. After all, the research has shown that service attendance, rather than private spirituality or solitary practice, strongly predicts health. Something about communal religious participation appears to be essential.

Religion is often perceived negatively today. But the effects of religious participation are often profoundly positive, a point too often neglected or ignored. The health benefits can be added to a long list of virtues found with an active religious life.

Attending religious services has been shown to increase the likelihood of a stable marriage, to elevate one's sense of meaning, and to expand one's social network. It leads to greater charitable giving and more robust volunteering and civic engagement. The effects are profound across numerous domains of life. This has important implications for the extent to which society promotes and protects religious

institutions, the maintenance of their non-profit tax-exempt status, and how the contribution of such institutions is portrayed in the media, the academy, and beyond.

Second, on a more personal level, for the roughly half of all Americans who believe in God but do not regularly attend services, the relationship between service attendance and health might constitute an invitation back to church. Something about the communal religious experience and participation matters.

Something powerful appears to take place there, and enhances health. It is something quite different from solitary spirituality.

Where else today do we find a community with a shared moral and spiritual vision, a sense of accountability, wherein the central task of members is to love and care for one another? The combination of the teachings, the relationships and the spiritual practices – over time, week after week, taken together – gradually alters behavior, creates meaning, alleviates loneliness, and shapes a person in ways too numerous to document.

Who could possibly conceive of such an elixir, one that stands to change society in ways small and large, subtle and profound? We'll leave that question to a higher power.

TO DISCOVER A KEY TO HEALTH AND HAPPINESS right in front of us, read about the "miracle drug" reported on in USA Today last fall.

THE HEALTH BENEFITS Nearly half of the country (roughly 2 in 5 Americans) reports having attended a religious service in the past week.

WHAT TO MAKE OF ALL OF THIS? First, the associations between religion and health should force us to re-evaluate religion's role in society and public life.

by Tyler J. VanderWeele, professor of epidemiology at Harvard, and John Siniff, former editor at USA TODAY's Editorial Page and found of the newspaper's On Religion weekly series that examined the intersection of faith and public life. Article Copyright © 2017 Monastery Icons, All rights reserved.

Is 60, 1-6.
