Carmen Julia Migenes-Johnson is the most wanton, flirtatious, outright sexual Carmen ever seen in this film adaptation of Bizet’s opera. She has a phenomenal mezzo-soprano voice to add to the great story, and her acting is exciting, really making one understand the tremendous erotic attraction between Carmen and Don Jose, and why the honourable soldier falls so tragically in love with her. Placido Domingo excels as Don Jose, becoming obsessed with love for the feckless gypsy woman. This is regarded by the critics as his finest screen performance. Ruggero Raimondi plays the suave Escamillo who competes for Carmen’s affections. One does not have to be an opera aficionado to appreciate this compelling film. It is a work to be enjoyed by the novice and the opera connoisseur alike. Adults £4.50 Children £3 January 29th Friday at 8 pm
