Hi Valued SGI VC members,

Happy New Year to you all.

Every new year brings us so much hope and excitement of the things that we look forward to in the coming year. Some of us may be excited with the plan to move into a new home, some may soon be celebrating their children’s graduation from university, some are anticipating a wonderful wedding occasion or even building up to the excitement of the birth of a baby while others simply awaits the day they board the plane for their next vaca-tion.

In the midst of counting the days to the arrival of these exciting events, perhaps it would be a good time to reflect what means most to us and to plan how we are to spend our time doing just the things which we value most. After all, “time is gold” is a cliché which is often used but I’ll go further than that to say that time is much more important than gold as no treasures can buy back time. Therefore, “time is your life”.

On a personal level, there are many things I enjoy doing in life. And a lot of times it could be as simple as reading an engrossing book while clutching a cup of hot coffee on a cool rainy day. But just like you, going on a vacation is one of the things that I really enjoy and excited to look forward to. This unknown writer captures the essence of what I thought of vacation succinctly:

“Vacation offer a perfect time to learn the art of living in the present; to focus on the joy of being together and in the moment. They are the brief shining breaks we spend months anticipating and years reliving. Vacation indulge you in the kind of time you deserve – time away from home, time with your family, time to literally explore new horizons”.

Indeed, the key words are, years reliving. To me, not many things are better than spending time with your loved ones exploring, experiencing and enjoying new things while on a holiday. Such happy memories are etched into our minds for a lifetime. But that may not be enough as

our minds can fail us as we age. I believe these moments must be captured in prints, or these days, digitally and stored well to be relived whenever needed. It will surely bring back wonderful memories of past years.

Isn’t true that we often take more photos whenever we are on vacation? Insofar as storing up treasures are concerned, accumulating photos of places, things, special events, scenery and most of all people…especially those who means the world to you, can never be enough. No amount of money can ever buy those photos frozen in time, capturing smiley faces of your loved ones in new places. So, do not let time just past you by, but make intentional plans, make time for your well-deserved break.

In this feature of the Vacation Views, we include a topic on photography. We hope you will be able to get some tips on ways to take better photos going forward. Enclosed are also some of the many photos and write ups from our valued members who have sent us while they were on holiday using the membership recently. Please login to our website to view all of it. We are touched by your happi-ness during those holiday trips. Our team probably had just as much pleasure as you knowing that they have contributed to some of your joy when going for holidays. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our members who were kind enough to pen a few words on how SGI VC has made a difference in their lives. It really encourages our team to do better for you.

Wishing all of you a really great year in 2018, a new year which is sprinkled with much joy, great health, time for vacation breaks and a dash of hope of a better future! Cheers!

January to June Weather and Season ForecastPrague has a humid continental climate with mild summers and very cold winters and averagetemperatures at about freezing point. Basically there are 4 seasons in Prague, Summer (June toAugust), Autumn (September to November), Winter (December to February) and Spring (March toMay). Despite the big difference in temperature between the 4 seasons, the rainfall stays fairlyconstant throughout the year.

If you are planning your next trip to Prague, summer will be the best but the summer months areusually the most expensive times to visit the city. However, if you want a good bargain and enjoy thebest weather, we would recommend you to travel during mid May or Mid September. Then, you mayenjoy less crowded and good deals on flight.

Local CuisineIt might just struck our thoughts what will be the famous cuisine in Prague when we travel there. Well,in more than 1,100 year of history, the country has been influenced by neighbouring countries likeGermany, Austria and Poland. Therefore, most of the meals consist of meat alongside with gravy, bread dumplings, vegetable cream sauce, whipped cream and cranberry sauce. As it is still anEuropean country, Czech Republic had been named as the top-beer consuming country in the worldand for a good reason they serve a top-notch beer.

1. PalačinkyThese thin Czech looks alike French Crepes areprepared with a different cooking method and batterwhich will be rolled up and served with fillings such asjam, fruit, cream or nuts. If you are not a fan of sweetstuff, you could always go for savory treats with meat, cheese and spinach stuffing. It’s easily found in cafesaround the city centre as well as food carts aroundthe city.

2. TrdelníkIt originated from the Hungarian-speaking region ofTransylvania, the traditional Slovak rolled pastry isusually served warm and topped with dusting ofsugar, nuts or cinnamon. This pastry is a street foodwhich you can easily find in any stalls and at the opensquares everywhere.

3. Svickova (Braised Beef with Dumplings)This is a must not missed original Czech dish whichis not influenced by other European countries buttotally unique to Czech Republic. The beef sirloin ispaired with bread dumplings in a vegetable-ladengravy which is typically made with herbs and rootvegies like carrots, celeriac, parsley root and toppedwith cranberry sauce or jam, a slice of lemon andcream. It is a combination of sweet, savory, creamyand salty which is definitely going to be different fromthe food we are eating in Malaysia. You can find thisfrom Café Louvre at a walking distance or atSokolovna which is 20 minutes away from theaccommodation.

It is a very old city, the streets are usually one way and it is beingrepaired all the time so the roads keep changingpretty much every day. So, do get around bypublic transportation or by walk when you aretravelling in Prague.

Do not exchange money on the streetWhen a random person on the street comes overand offers you to exchange your money toCzech currency, just nod and walk away. Get thecorrect currency directly from your own bank. Itwill be too common trick to exchange yourmoney for a weaker and useless currency insideof Czech Republic.

Association for the Blind since November 2016.

At first riding is just another exercise activity and I

never realized that cycling can really unite people

from different background and races. This activity

is just not for the visually impaired but it has also

attracted both sighted and cyclist

from all over Malaysia. However, riding a Tandem

not only helped to increase my fitness level but

also elevate positive thoughts and a sense of

satisfaction by contributing to the joy of the physi-

cally challenged. I personally found it fun and

another green way to travel together with the

VIP’s and let them feel the nature and excitement

in riding. Now, this has become one of my routine

activities once every 2 weeks.

Received “Top Member Services”

non-sighted

To be honest, I am not a bookworm. I don’t have

any favourite books but once in a while I will read

some motivational books which I believe would

add value to myself. Other than that, sometime

I will also “flip-on” some recipes books and one

of my favorite dishes is “Nasi Putih with Daging

Masak Merah”.

5. What is the most memorable experience in your life and you are still missing it?

I miss my University life badly! Being student during University is the most challenging time where I had to strike a balance between my academic and active sports lifestyle. Yes, I am a sporty girl! I was actively involved in Basket-ball and I am a representative for UiTM’s Bas-ketball team. Because I was very active in sports I started to slack off in my studies during my first year. My late father noticed it and told me “I know you love sport but remember your academic achievement is equally important too. I want you to give me at least Cumulative Grade Points Average (CGPA) of 3”. This constant reminder kept rewinding in my mind and I instantly knew that this was the challenge that I need to take up to make my late father proud. Finally, I graduated with more than 3 CGPA in Bachelor of Hotel Management. At the same time I managed to “kill 2 birds with 1 stone” as I had also won some tournaments in Basketball during the University period.

The event began with the briefing and Introduction by theChairman, Mr. Hafizul and followed by the briefing of theLiaison Committee Chairman, Mr. Alwin Yike whomhighlighted his views on the progress and the development ofthe Club.

Some of the highlights from Mr. Alwin Yike includes thespeedier updates via communication channel, member’sprivileges, low season promotion response, his travelexperience via Interval International (II), his latest holidayexperience in New Jersey, updates of participation of LiaisonCommittee in the focus group study, highlights of issues facedby members and importance of paying Annual MaintenanceFee. Next, there was an re-election of Liaison Committee membersin replacement of the above 2 committees. After the electionprocess was completed, we continued with the briefing fromMr. Ivan Ting, Chief Executive Officer of SGI VC to brief themeeting on the written enquiry where seven clear days noticewas given to the management of the Club.

The meeting continued with the updates of the development ofthe club by Miss Fan Pui Chin, Assistant Vice President-Finance of SGI VC. Here are some of the highlights which wasshared during the meeting.

Since year 2013, we could see a growing trend in themember’s booking success rate. This was shown by thesuccess rate which was maintained above 70% and E-go

Based on E-survey results, there was a slight decrease in theoverall satisfaction level from 62% in year 2015 as comparedto 60% in year 2016 which was mainly caused by the lowersatisfaction rates of II and Vacation Views. Rectification stepshad been taken by refreshing the Vacation Views concept andcontents. The trend of exchanges via II had changed and among the top10 members travel destinations with II, Thailand was still thetop selection of the members which included both island(Phuket) and the city (Bangkok). At the same time, a total of78.16% of the members had obtained instant confirmationwhen they place booking with II. Furthermore, SGI VC hadtaken the initiative to provide members with II information via aworkshop which was conducted by SGI VC and IIrepresentative from Singapore. There were several initiatives implemented to increase theentitlement usage of the member such as proactive calls, lowseason promotions, improve enrolment and deposit to II. Therehad been an approximately 5,380 proactive calls as of 31st

August 2017 to assist the members on their travel plans. Ontop of that, there were many value-added activities organizedin Swiss-Court Holiday Apartments, Damai Laut after receivingfeedbacks from our members during the 2016 survey.Based on the statistics shown during the meeting from 1st

January 2017 to 28th September 2017, we found out that therewere total of 6,923 attempts to book the room nights versusthe number of 60 days in peak season during the said periodwhich means the demand was far more than supply. Hence, the club had taken the initiative to introduce low seasonpromotion.Lastly, it was also informed that there will be a repainting of 42units of room in Swiss-Garden Residences Kuala Lumpur andthe accumulative sinking fund may be used to renovate thebathrooms at Swiss-Villas Damai Laut.

TRAVEL MEMOIRS We always love to hear about your amazing vacation experiences

with SGI Vacation Club. Sharing is a way of caring……

I joined SGI Vacation Club since 2002, and I have been a member foralmost 15 years. By having the SGI Vacation Club membership I couldnow benefit from the Interval International established network in somany countries.

Some of the places that I have travelled includes Bangkok, Singaporeand New Jersey using the Interval International exchange.

Today I would like to share with you on my recent experience exploringNew Jersey, Atlantic City on 31st March 2017 till 6th April 2017.Nowadays there are so many airlines low-fare promotions to choose fromand I often took advantage of these low-fares. I managed to fly over bytaking Cathay Pacific flight and landed in Newark Liberty InternationalAirport.

New Jersey is a state in the Northeastern and mid-Atlantic regions of theUnited States of America and it lies entirely within the combinedstatistical areas of New York City and Philadelphia.

This time around I was planning to book for New York but it is notavailable and Interval International offered me New Jersey instead. Therefore, I managed to get my confirmation quite immediately afterdepositing 7 nights into Interval International. They offered me to stay inMarriott’s Fairway Villas which is a two-bedroom villas with a scenic viewwith indoor heated pool, outdoor pools and it is very nearby historic siteswithin easy driving distance. We can easily access to the world-classchampionship golf courses from the villas. I would say it is one of theestablished property that belongs to Marriott. We rented a car fromEnterprise Rent-A-Car with insurance at around USD 50 per day andrenting a car is very simple as pick and drop it off once you are done.

Some of the places that worth mentioning is the Historic Smithville Innthat offers sophisticated dining experience with warm hospitality. As aInterval International member, you would also enjoy 10-15% discount atsome of the restaurant or shop in Galloway. Other places worth visitingare mainly their historic site, antique stores, farms, parks breweries manymore and also Atlantic Citywith many tourist attractions which is located10 miles away from Fairways Villas.

Overall, before travelling I managed to check the Agoda cost forMarriott’s Fairway Villas accommodation and to my surprised it costalmost 7 K for my seven nights stay at the resort. Since I have paid RM17,000 for the membership and with just 3 overseas trips which I havementioned earlier, the value of accommodations were almost the sameas the membership price I paid. That means, I have almost gained backthe return of my investment with SGI VC in 3 or 4 trips to overseas resort.

1ST PLACE

We traveled to SGBRDL with 4 families from Klang Valley and Sabak Bernam for a weekend getaway and get together session. The kids really had fun the beach. They built sand castle, burying their bodies, sitting by the beach while waiting the waves came and splashed onto them, collecting seashells and swimming. The hotel's pool underwent a major renovation and its looks like a mini water theme park!! We had dinner at Medan Ikan Bakar Teluk Muroh. Awesome eatery spot with variety of selection and reasonable price. On our way home, we dropped by at Lumut to buy some dried seafood products and had a chance on board KD Rahmat. We made a pit stop at Kg Gajah to taste some local durians before continuing our journey back to reality. What a memo-rable weekend!!

SGI makes it possible to travel and seize a memorable getaway and reunite friends and families. The low season promotion was really a great deal that allow us to . Many thanks to Mr Alex Yap (Member Services) for his assistance.

2ND PLACE

We got a 'grand' welcome from Gunung Agung (Grand Mountain) when it erupted as soon as we touched down in Bali. It didn't interrupt our plans as most of the tourist spots were unaffected. However, our luck ended and our nightmare began when our flight to KL was cancelled. With check-out time at noon, I called SGI VC. Alex listened patiently but immediately understood the urgency. Without a moment to lose, he sent out a holiday request to Jakarta, got Maria to press Jakarta for approval, and kept me updated the whole time. At 12.20pm, the hotel confirmed my extended stay.

SGIVC makes it possible for us to travel thousands of miles away without having to pay a queen's ransom for accommodation, and yet made sure they were not far away when we are hit by unexpected events such as Bali's volcano eruption. To SGIVC, especially Alex and Maria, TERIMA KASIH.

TIPS FOR TAKINGTRAVEL PHOTOS LIKE A PRO10Some people collect souvenirs when they travel while some other may only prefer tocollect beautiful images with their camera. Travel photography is like a time machine, freezing memories from a journey that you can look back on and enjoy for years.

Every travel destination has its own look, culture, history, people, feelings, landscapes, and stories. Learning how to capture these subjects through photos helps you to conveythe spirit of a place to others, giving them a glimpse of what it might be like to venturethere.

The emerging social media platform allows so many people to capture video/images oneach minutes, second and hours and share it socially but how many of us really knowhow to take a nice and beautiful pictures?

Let us share with you the tips to take travel photos like a pro.

1. Learn About Your Camera

When you are on the road it is not the time to figure out how your camera works. Fiddling

with the controls to get a shot will just mean less time enjoying your surroundings. When

in doubt, choose a scene mode like landscape or night portrait, depending on the

situation you want to capture, and let the camera do the work.

2. Use Bright Colours

Use colour to create bold, dramatic compositions. The key is to simplify. Close in and

concentrate on just one or two colours. A photo which is dominated by a strong primary

colour like red or blue can be very powerful. Don't just stick to the primary colours as

compositions of subtler hues like pinks and greens can also be very strong. Colour can

evoke powerful emotions.

3. Use A Tripod

A tripod allows you to set your camera position and keep it there. With the camera fixed,

you can then take your time arranging the perfect composition. You can also adjust

exposure settings, focus points, and really spend time paying attention to the image you

want to create or use advanced techniques like HDR, focus stacking, and panoramas.

4. Search For Detail

Be observant. Look for the little details that capture the spirit of the

place that you're in. Maybe it's the way the light plays across cobbled

streets. Or handicrafts that the locals sell in the markets.

5. Experiment With Composition

You can always come up with a better photo composition after some

experimentation. Take that first shot standing up straight but then try

laying on the ground for a low angle. May be climb up something

nearby and shoot from a higher angle.

6. Be Conscious Of The Quality Of Light

Photography depends on light and the understanding that being in the

right location at the right time of day enhances the quality of your

photograph. What is important is your awareness and sensitivity to the

lights.

7. Look For A Different Take On Local Landmarks

We've all seen hordes of tourists standing in the same place taking

photos of a well known landmark, normally in the middle of the day. If

you want something better, you're going to have to be a little smarter,

and start developing your creative eye.

8. People Tell A Story

If you think a photo is bland and needs more to tell the story, people

are always a great option to make that happen.

9. Use A Polarizing Filter

Polarizing filters work by eliminating reflections. Light reflects from dust

and other particles suspended in the air, and these reflections desaturate

the colour of the sky on a sunny day. Put a polarizing filter on the front of

your lens and the reflections will be cut out, leaving a deep blue sky.

Polarizing filters also increase colour saturation by eliminating reflections

from painted and other non-metallic surfaces, including flowers and

leaves.

10. Use Pinterest For Inspiration

The best way to use Pinterest for photo inspiration and trip research is just

to sign up and start using the search bar tool to research your destination.

Within moments you will have a plethora of visual content at your finger

tips to inspire your own and know where not to miss for those photographs.
