Foryearsthepublichasregularlyasked,“AregalleryopeningsonFirstFridays?”Aswellknownasthephraseis,inRiverNorththerehasneverbeensuchanevent,sincemostopeningshappeneverysixtoeightweeks.TheMuseumofContemporaryArthashadsuchaprogram,andotherartdistrictsinthecityhavedesignatedmonthlypublicopeningnights,butitisinRiverNorththatthe“FirstFriday”mythhaslongpersisted.
Now,oneofthedistrict’snewestgalleriesistakingadvantageofthe“FirstFridays”nameandofthepublic’sdesireforaregularopeningnightschedule.TheRangefinderGallery’sDanTamarkinisalwaysfullofenergyandideas.Oftenbuzzingaroundthegalleryrearrangingfurnitureforthenextopeningormeetingwithartistsaboutfutureexhibitions,nowhe’ssethisentireschedulefor2015andhascommittedtohavinganopeningreceptionthefirstFridayofeverymonth(beginningJanuary9thtogiveeveryoneachancetorecuperatefromNewYear’sEvefestivities).Heanticipatesthataregularschedulewillbepopularwithhisownclients,buthealsohopesthattheenergycatchesoninotherareagalleries.Whenthewholeneighborhoodisinvolved,FirstFridayswillceasetobeamythandwillbecomeanengagingreality,givingnewlifetoanhistoricartsdistrict.

inexhaustabledelightinexplorationischarm-ingtoabusyadult.Shinyobjectsandnovelexperiencescanentertaingrownupstoo,butmostofusarealittlehardertotrulyimpress.
EachwinterwhenIwritethisletterforourJanuary-Aprilissue,it’satoughassignment.Howcanwegetpeopletoseethingsinanewlight?Isitpossibletobeexcitedaboutthecrueleststretchoftheyearinoneofthecoldestcitiesinthecountry?Manypeoplejustwanttofleeuntilspringarrives.Butinsteadoftryingtoforcemyenthusiasmonothers,maybethemiddleofwinterjustisn’tatimetobeallabuzz.Instead,itmaybeareprievefromthefrenzy.

EightdecadeshavepassedforRichardHunt.Longasculpturestar,asHuntcelebrateshis80thbirthday,twoinstitutionsarereflectingonthisprolific,resourcefulartist’scareer.FranckMercuriovisitedHunt’sstudiototakealookbackandtoseewhat’snew.

ThestoryoftheSouth Side Community Art Center(SSCAC)isbesttoldthroughthegallerywallsofits1892GustavHallbergdesignedbuilding.Thewallsofthemaingalleryshoweverynailholefromeveryexhibiteverhungthere.TheinauguralexhibitionoftheCenter,heldinDecember1940,featuredworksbyCharlesWhite,BernardGoss,WilliamCarter,EldzierCortor,FrankNealandArchibaldMotley,Jr..Thosefirstnailholestellastoryofacommunitycommittedtoself-improvementandthebeliefthattheartsholdatransformativepowertoenhancelives.
In2015,SSCACentersits75thyearandstandsasoneofthelastsurviving WorksProgressAdministration(WPA)FederalArtsProject (FAP)CentersandtheoldestAfricanAmericancommunityartcenterinthecountry.TodaytheCentercontinuesinitsoriginalmissiontopreserve,conserveandexhibitAfricanAmericanartandshowcaseAfricanAmericanartists.
InitsearlyyearstheCenterwasahiveofactivity,aswellasawho’swhooftheChicagoRenaissance.Inadditiontoaseriesoffrequentlychangingexhibitions,renownedartistsGeorgeNeal,WilliamSylvesterCarter,CharlesSebree,KatherineBell,JosephKerseyandSylvesterBrittontaughtartclasses.InezCunninghamStark,theeditorofPoetrymagazine,taughtapoetryclass;herstudentsincludedfuturePoetLaureateofIllinoisGwendolynBrooks,aswellasMargaretDanner,andRobertDavis.
Brooks,authorRichardWright,andWillardMotleyattendedaregularwriters’forum;onweekendsmusicallegendNat“King”Coleplayedjazz.PhotographerandfilmmakerGordonParkskeptastudioattheCenter. LessonsofferedforfreeattheCenterincludedoilpainting,drawing,composition,watercolor,sculpture,lithography,posterdesign,fashionillustration,interiordecoration,silkscreening,weaving,andhookedrugmaking.ByMarch1941,nearly13,500peoplehadattendedclasses,exhibitions,andeventsattheCenter.
SSCACevenreceivedrecognitionfromtheWhiteHousewhenfirstLadyEleanorRooseveltdedicatedtheCenteronMay7,1941inaceremonythatwasbroadcastnationwideonCBSradio.AgalacelebrationfollowedandfeaturednationalluminarieslikesingerBessieSmithandactressEthelWaters.TheFirstLadychronicledhervisittoChicagointheMay9,1941editionofhercolumn“MyDay”,Belowisaportionoftheentry:
At 3:15 (May 7, 1941) we went to the South Side Community Art Center to dedicate their building. … Chicago has long been a center of Negro art. Many Negro artists have had a hard time getting their training and have starved as many artists do, even when they have achieved a certain amount of recognition. With the aid of federal money it (The Center) has been converted to its present purposes.
ManypeoplewereinfluentialfortheCenterovertheyears.WhentheCenteropenedDr.MargaretGossBurroughswasoneofitsyoungestboardmembers;shecontinuedheractiveinvolvementinnumerouscapacitiesuntilherdeathin2010.AprolificfundraiserforSSCAC,sheisoftenrememberedforher“milesofdimes”fundraisingcampaignthatwasinstrumentalinSSCAC’spurchaseoftheBauhausremodeledbuilding.
TodaytheSSCACmaintainsitsstatusasanactivecommunityresourceundertheleadershipofExecutiveDirectorMaséquaMyers,aformerstudentofDr.Burroughs,andacommittedboardofdirectors,somewithnearly50yearsofservice.Tomarkthe75th anniversarySSCAChasdevelopedayearofprogrammingandevents,includingarevivalofOff The Wall, Onto the Stage: Dancing the Art of Jonathan Green,whichreturnstotheHarrisTheaterforMusicandDanceonApril11.Green,astudentattheArtInstituteofChicago,wasahabituéoftheCenterandcontinuesasasupporter.TheBalletisacollaborationofstillartanddanceandwasfirstconceivedbytheColumbiaCityBallet’sExecutiveandArtisticDirectorWilliamStarrettaftermeetingGreenin2002.ItdebutedinChicagoin2010duringtheSSCAC’s70thAnniversarycelebration.Asin2010,therewillbeaspecialperformanceforChicagoPublicSchoolstudents.MayorRahmEmmanuelwillserveasHonoraryChairofthis75thAnniversaryevent.
TheCenterwillalsohostits50thAnnualArtAuction,aswellasarecreationofitsstoriedArtistandModelsBall,ashowcaseofthe‘avantgarde’thatsometimesfeaturedworksonhumancanvasesandwasdubbedprovocativeforthetime.Exhibitionsfor2015willincludeBlack Comic Book Heroes,exhibitsthatpayhomagetotheCenter’sfoundersaswellasupandcomingartists,andanexhibitionpartnershipwiththeMuseumofContemporaryArt.
MyersreferstoSSCAC’s75thas“soaringtowardsourdiamondanniversary.”Shesays,“IlookforwardtobridgingSSCAC’slegacyofhistoricalexcellenceintraditionalartwiththebrillianceoftheartistsoftoday.Ourgoalistoattractartloversfromallovertheworld.”HervisionisborneoutasarthistoriansandresearchershavetraveledtoviewtheCenter’sarchivesfromasfarawayasEngland,Paris,NigeriaandCoted’Ivoire.

OnaquietsectionofLillStreetoverlookingJonquilPark,aone-timeCTAtransformerstationstandsanonymouslyamongitsmoregentrifiedLincolnParkneighbors.Unassumingfromtheoutside,the1910structureboastsanimpressivethree-story-tallinteriorspaceilluminatedbyrowsofcathedral-likewindows.Withinthisbuilding(thatoncehousedgiantrotaryconverterspoweringLincolnAvenue’strolleycarsystem),residesthestudioofChicagosculptorRichardHunt.
HuntpurchasedtheoldtransformerbuildingfromtheCTAintheearly1970sandrelocatedhisstudiothere.Theateliercontainsadiversearrayof“stuff”bearingwitnesstoHunt’svocation.Mountainsofscrapmetalstandnexttolarge-scaleworksin-progress.DozensofmaquetteslinetabletopsalongsiderandompiecesofAfricanart.RowsofarchivalboxesandfilingcabinetsoverflowwiththememorabiliaofHunt’s60-yearartisticpractice.
Chicagoiscelebratingtheartist’slongandhighlysuccessfulcareer—andhis80thbirthday—withtwonewexhibitions:Richard Hunt: 60 Years of SculptureattheChicagoCulturalCenter(throughMarch29)andMCA DNA: Richard HuntattheMuseumofContemporaryArt(throughMay17).
Bestknownforhismonumentalworksofpublicart,Hunthascompletednumerouscommissionsthroughoutthecityandthenation.ChicagoansareperhapsmostfamiliarwithHunt’sFlight Forms(2001)atMidwayAirport, We Will(2005)onRandolphStreetneartheChicagoCulturalCenter,andEagle Columns (1989)inJonquilPark.ButHunthasalsocreatedpublicworksinnearlyadozenotherstates,includingsignificantcommissionsinMichigan,NorthCarolina,andWashington,DC.
YethisprominenceasapublicsculptoroftenobscuresHunt’sthrivingstudiopractice.“Imakethingsfromcoffeetable-sizedtoplaza-sized,”saidHuntduringarecentinterview.Indeed,thecompactexhibitionattheMCAfocusesattentiononeightoftheartist’smoremodestly-scaledworks.
“PeopleknowRichardfromhispublicprojects,butIthinkitisreallyimportanttoaddressthathehasbeenlaboringinhisstudiomakingstudioworkaswell,”saysNaomiBeckwith,MCAcurator.“Thereisthishumbler-scaled,yetnolesssignificant,practiceinhisstudiothat’songoing.”
Huntbecamefamousatanearlyagethroughthese“humbler-scaled”works.Arachne(1956)wasacquiredbytheMuseumofModernArtwhentheartistwasstillinhistwenties.Huntcreatedthisandotherearlysculpturesusingfoundobjects,suchasdiscardedautomobilepartsandotherdetritusofindustrialproduction.
“Itwasaboutcreatingsomethingfromfoundmaterialandtheindustrialwastethatwe’vebeenproducingasasociety,”explainedBeckwith.“Youhaveartistsstartingtomakethingsoutofwaste[inthe1950s].Ican’thelpbutthinkaboutitasakindofcommentaryonexcessproduction.”
Asayoungartist,Huntdisplayedatalentforimbuingobsolete,staticobjectswithlifeandmovement.“SomeoftheearliestworksthatRichardcreatedwerefigural.They’reallhumansorhumanoidsorlittlerobots,”saysBeckwith.“Andit’saboutreactivating—orliterallyreanimating—someofthisstuffthatseemedlifelessandpulledapartandwasted.”
HunthimselfcitesJulioGonzález(1876–1942)asamajorinfluenceonhisearlywork.“Gonzaleztalkedaboutsculpturebeingthemarriageofmaterialandspace—drawinginspace—youknow,thatkindofthing,”saysHunt.“Itgotmyattention.”
Gonzálezandothermodernistspursuedamore“constructed”wayofproducingsculpture,oftenassemblingorweldingseparatecomponentstogethertocreatethree-dimensionalcompositions.ItwasamethodthatinspiredHunt.“Istartedoutmodeling,butthenIsawthisconstructedstuffandwasveryexcitedbyit,”explainsHunt.“Iwantedtomoveinthatdirection.Sothat’swhatgotmestarteddoingmetalwork,firstsolderinglittlethings,thengoingontoweld.”
AlthoughHuntstillusesthistechniquetoday,theideaofmodelingisn’tentirelyabsentfromhismaturework—often,heweldstogethermodeledcomponentstocreatehissculpturalconstructions.Huntworksouthisinitialideasusingwaxslabsthatheshapesandsolderstocreatemaquettes.Guidedbytheseinitialmodels,hethenmodelslargerpiecesfromsteelorbronzeandweldsthesetogethertofabricatethefinishedwork.

Thefinalproductisconsciouslyabstract,yetreflectsanunderlyingfiguralquality.Huntssculpturalcompositionssuggestwings,waves,bodyparts,andothermoving,flowing,curvilinearshapes.SaysBeckwith,“I’dalwaysbeenamazedbyhispracticethatisabstract,butborrowsfromthesekindofsurreal,biomorphicforms.”
IntheCulturalCenterexhibition,60ofHunt’ssignaturesculpturesaredisplayedfromdifferentperiodsofhiscareer,includingtwonewworksneverbeforeexhibitedinpublic.AlongwiththeMCAshow,theCulturalCenterexhibitionoffersvisitorsanopportunitytoviewsomeofthebestpiecescreatedbyChicago’sprodigiousdeanofsculpture.

TheartisticsensibilityofChicagoarchitectCarlosMartinez’scollectionisbestdescribedas“eclectic.”Withinthe3,000-square-footGoldCoastcondoheshareswithhispartner,MichaelTirrell,Martinezhasamassedasignificantmodernandcontemporaryartcollectionthatjuxtaposesabstractandfigurativework,oftenhunginpairingsthatemphasizethecontrast.Theart,inturn,existsinakindofcreativetensionwiththehighlytraditionalinteriorarchitectureofthebuilding,anupscale1897HolabirdandRocheapartmentcomplexthatwasoneofthefirstofitskindinChicago’sGildedAge.
AnativeofCubaandaresidentofChicagosince1982,MartinezisnowaprincipalatGensler,aleadingarchitecturefirm,specializingininteriordesign.Histasteformixingperiodsandstylesisevidentatthecouple’sAstorStreetcondo(which,theywerehappyto discover,wasonceoccupiedbyLászlóMoholy-Nagy,theHungarianpainterandphotographerwhofoundedtheInstituteofDesignattheIllinoisInstituteofTechnology).Richwoodpaneling,moldingandfloors,amassivemantelpieceandbookshelvesformastrikingold-worldbackdropfortheart,muchofitbyChicagoImagistsEdPaschkeandRogerBrown.

Q: How did you get started as a collector?
A:Itallstarted28yearsago,whichiswhenImademyfirst“serious”purchase—thefirsttimeIwentintoagalleryandboughtsomething.ItwasadrawingbyDavidKotker,ayoung,up-and-comingsculptorhereinChicagowhowasdoingsomereallybigpieces.Zolla/Liebermanhadashowofhisstudiesforthesculpture,whichwerereallywonderful,almostdeChirico-ish.AlotofDavid’spiecesweresortofperverted—thelinedrawingIboughthasakindofS&Mquality.It’sreallybeautiful.
Q: You still have it?
A:Yes.I’veneverdecommissionedasinglepiece.Andthenoneday,Daviddecidedtogetmarried,haveakid,andstopdoingart.Hewasverywell-knownatthetime—hewasadarlingoftheartcommunityhere—buthe’snotsowellknownnowbecausehequit.IthinkIpaid$600forthedrawing.
Q: Which was a lot of money then.
A:Ohyes.Butitwasabirthdaypresenttomypartner,Michael.Sofromthatpoint,foreveryChristmasandeverybirthday,Iwouldbuyanewpiece,occasionallymorethanone.We’vebeentogetherfor28years,sothat’showthecollectionhappened.
Q: Had you been single, would you still have been collecting art?
A:Yes,forsure.Iwouldhaveboughtitformyself.(Laughs.)I’vealwayslovedart.MymotherusedtosaywhenIwasakid,“Whenyougrowup,Ithinkyourhouseisgoingtobelikeamuseum.”(Laughs.)
Q: And so it is.
A:Yes,althoughIdon’tthinkofitasamuseum.(Laughs.)Theotherthing
thathappenedwasthataroundthetimeIboughtthatfirstpiece,IdidaprojecthereinChicagowithawonderfulcuratorandartconsultant,EmilyNixon.She’sextremelyknowledgeableandhasherowncompany,NixonArtAssociates.ItoldEmily,“ChristmasiscomingupandIwanttobuyapresentforMichael.HehasheardofthisguyhereinChicago,EdPaschke.CanyouhelpmegetaPaschke?”Shesaidyes,sheknewofagreatpiecebyPaschkeatagalleryinMichigan.Iwenttoseeitandlovedit,butthenshesaid,“Letmeshowyoutheseotherpiecesalso.”Theywerethesetwoblack-and-whitedrawings,“Hubert”and“Tudor”[1976].Andtheretheyare[pointstothedrawingsoverthemantelpiece].Andthenshesaid,there’sanotherpiece,whichIalsoloved.AndItoldher,“I’mgoingtobuythemall.”SothatwasthebeginningofthewholePaschkething.MichaelandIreallylovehiswork,andovertheyears,whensomething

Q: You have several pieces by both artists, I see.
A:IthinkthereareaboutadozenPaschkesandnineRogerBrowns.Wealsohaveseveralotherclassics—aMotherwell,aNevelson,acouplePicassos.There’sanEllsworthKelly,whichisoneofmyfavorites.It’sfunny,becauseeverythingiseitherhighlyabstractorcompletelyfigurative.Michaelsays,“Ifwegointoanotherroomwithfaceslookingatyou…”Paschkeisalwaysaface,youknow.
Q: What was it about Paschke’s work that appealed to you?
A:MichaelhadmetPaschke,andoneofthethingshereallylikedwashowdown-to-earthEdwas.Istartedreadingabouthim,andIlikedthestorybehindtheart.WhenEddidoneofhisearlypiecesofafemaleentertainer,hegotsomecriticismfor“exploiting”women.ThestoryIwastoldwasthatthenextyear,hecameoutwiththisseriesof“Hubert”and“Tudor”—therewasathirdpiece,whichI’mtracking—aboutmaleentertainers,someofwhomweretransgendered.Edwashavingadialoguewiththeartcommunityanditsnarrativearoundhiswork.Ithoughtthatwaswonderful.Iwasonapanelrecentlyandsomebodyaskedme,“Whatinspiresyourwork?”AsanarchitectIlooktothesocialconstructofthetime—what’shappeningintheworld,inpopularculture.ThatwasalsothelensPaschkeusedinhisart.ThefactthathewasaChicagoanwasalsoimportant,andthathewaspartofthisschool,theImagists,withRogerBrown.
Q: What was the connection with Brown? Did you meet him?
A:InevermetEdPaschke,andMichaelnevermetRogerBrown.PartofwhatwelikeaboutBrownisthatmanyofhispaintingsareaboutbuildingsandthepeopleinthem.Everybodythinks,“Oh,you’reanarchitect,soofcourseyoulikeRogerBrown.”ItwasMichaelwhowasmesmerizedbyhisdepictionsofglowingwindowsintheblack-boxbuildings.Hereallyconnectedwiththat,andIlovedittoo,becauseIloveMiesvanderRohe,andwelivedinaMiesbuildingonLakeShoreDriveatthetime.IalsolikehowBrowndepictsthesky.
Q: Those pillowy skies—
A:Pillowy,yes.Ortheylooklikedrapery.HewasevenmoreoutrageousthanPaschkewithhiscriticalcommentaries.Wewent
toaBrownshowatthePhyllisKindGalleryandsawthepiece“TheJimandTammyShow.”Ilovedit,inpartbecausehereagainwearedealingwithpopularcultureinthecontextoffineart.Ican’tsayIunderstoodit;infactIwondered,“Whatthehelldoesitmean?”
Q: You knew who Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker were?
A:Yes,althoughpolitically,Ihadabsolutelynoaffiliationwiththeirmission.IshowedittoMichaelandsaid,“Weshouldgetthis,it’ssocool.”Hesaid,“ThatisthemosthorriblethingI’veeverseeninmylife.”(Laughs.)
Q: It has a camp sensibility.
A:Super-camp.It’saboutreligiousfanaticism,ofcourse,butalsothescandaltheyhad.Soaboutthreeyearsago,thatpiececameupatauction,IthinkatLeslieHindman,andIsaid,“Ihavetogetit.Iwasdestinedtohavethatpiece.”IgaveittoMichaelasaChristmaspresent.Hegotabiglaughoutofit.
Q: I see you also have a print by Le Corbusier, which makes sense given the architecture connection.
A:Yes,Iboughtabookabouthislithographsin1979whenIwasanarchitecturestudent.IboughtitattheLeCorbusierFoundationinParis,andprobablypaid$20.Thebooknowisworth$800,whichiswhatacopysoldforrecentlyatauction.Ilovedthelithographs.
Q: He’s not so well-known for those, is he?
A:No,butthey’vebecomeverycollectible.ThePeninsulaHotelhassixofthem.WhenoneofthelithographscameupforauctionatLeslieHindman,Isaid,“Ineedtohavethispiece.”Ihadabusinesstripandhadtobeoutoftown,soItoldMichael,“Couldyoupleasegototheauctionandbidonthispiece?”Thedayoftheauction,IcalledhomeandMichaelsaid,“Ifeelterrible.Igottotheauctionacoupleminuteslateanddidn’tgettobidonthepiece.I’mreallysorry.”Iwassodisappointed.Afewmonthslater,ChristmasEvecomes,andweweregoingtohavedinnerwithEmilyNixon.Wegotinthecartogotodinner,andMichaelsaid,“Iforgotsomething,”andwentbackinside.HetookalongtimeandIwasgettingupset.Finallywewenttodinnerandcamehomeandwerehavingtea.Isaid,“Waitaminute,there’ssomethingdifferent.”TherewastheLeCorbusierpiece,framedandhangingonthewall.ThatwasreallyniceofMichael.
Q: And kind of wicked, also.
A:Absolutely.
Q: Your architecturally traditional apartment sets up an interesting dynamic with contemporary art hanging on the walls.
A:Ialwayslovedtheideaofthecontrastbetweenclassicalarchitectureandmodernfurnitureandart.InSpanish,thewordforfurnitureismueble,andthewordforrealestateisinmueble.Literally,what’smovableismuebleandwhat’sfixedisinmueble.Theterminologyclarifiesthefactthatsomethingsyoutakewithyou,andotherthingsstaybehind.Tome,architectureisdesignedfortheages,butfurnitureandartreflectwhereyouareintime.Socomingtothisclassicalapartmentwasaboutcreatingatensionbetweenthetwothings.

FoundedbyentrepreneurSteveBerkowitzin1987,Marwenisoneofthelongestrunning—andmostsuccessful—youthartprogramsinChicago.Theorganiza-tion(namedafterBerkowitz’sdaughters,MarcyandWendy)currentlyserves1,000students,from6ththrough12thgrades,inmorethan100artprograms.
ManystudentsreturntoMarwenasadultstoteach.“AreallyimportantaspectofMarwenisthatweaimtoworkwithkidsoverthearcofmanytermsandyears,”saysAntoniaContro,Marwen’sExecutiveDirectorforthepast20years.“Ayoungpersoncancomehereinsixthorseventhgrade,staythroughhighschoolandthencontinuethroughworkopportunitieswithourteaching-artistcommunity.”
Marwenoffersprogramsintraditionalmediumssuchaspainting,drawingand
sculpturebutalsocoursesinnewmedia,interdisciplinaryarts,anddesign,includ-ingfashiondesign.Beyondofferingawiderangeofvisualartsprograms,oneofMarwen’sgoalsistogetkidstothinkabouttheirfuturepotential,especiallycollege.

AworldawayfromMarwenanditsRiverNorthgalleryneighborsistheSouthChicagoArtCenter,locatedon91stStreetneartheCalumetRiver.“It’sprettymuchaculturaldesertdownhere,”saysExecutiveDirectorSarahWard.“We’retheonlypro-gramthathasservedthisneighborhoodforthepast13years,andit’stheonlyconsistentafterschoolprogram.”
WardhasadegreeinarttherapyfromtheArtInstituteofChicago.SheseesmultipleneedsofthekidswholiveintheSouthChi-cagoneighborhoodandparticipateintheCenter’sprograms.
“Whilesomeprogramsmightfitsnugglyintoanarteducationboxorasocialservicesbox,wefill[students’]needsonaholisticlevel,”saysWard.
Inadditiontooffering29differentprograms
forelementary,middleschool,andhighschoolkids—coveringsubjectslikeart,gardening,andcooking—theCenteralsofeedsstudentsifthey’rehungryandhelpsprovidebasicnecessitieslikeclothing.Mostimportant,theCentergivesitsstudentsasafeandstableplacetogotoafterschooltoavoidSouthChicago’srandomviolence.
“They’recomingheretobeinasafeplacewherepeoplearenotonlygoingtoteachthemconceptsandart,butthey’realsogoingtoberespectedandheard,”explainsWard.“Theydon’thavetoworryaboutthethingsthataregoingonoutsideofhere.”
TheCenterrecentlypurchasedanewbuild-ingatthecornerof91stSt.andS.HoustonAve.andhaslauncheda$2.5milliondollarfundraisingcampaigntopayforthemoveandneededrenovations.LocatedacrossthestreetfromtheSouthChicagoPublicLibraryandtheSouthChicagoYMCA,thenewhomewillprovideevenmoresafetyandsecurityforitsstudents.
“Itwillgreatlyraiseourprofile,”saysWardabouttherelocationoftheCenter.“Pluswewillhaveagalleryspace,akiln,andwe’llbeopenformoreextendedhours…itwillbecomeareallykid-friendly,safespace.”

Yollocallimeans“heartofthehouse”inNahuatl,theAzteclanguage.LocatedinBarrettParkinChicago’sLittleVillage,thisteenartsprogramisanoutreachinitiativeoftheNationalMuseumofMexicanArt.

ThefirstChicagoretrospectiveforMr.Imagination(GregoryWarmack,1948-2012),acelebratedartistwhosecareerspannedmorethanthirtyyears,iscomingtoIntuit.
AsthethirdofninechildrengrowinguponChicago’sSouthside,Warmackspenthisfreetimemakingsmallworksfromfoundobjectsforspendingmoney.Followinga1978muggingwhenhewasshotandlefttodie,hehadanoutofbodyexperienceduringhisrecoverythatledhimtodedicatehimselftoanewregenerativeartforthepeople.
“It’snotreallyteaching,”saysDirectorVanessaSanchezofYollocalli’sapproach,“butmorelikeamentorrelationship.”
Thestudents,inturn,collaborateontheirinstructor’sprojects.Asaprimeexample,Sanchezcitesarecentcollaborationwith96Acres,aseriesofsite-specificworksandeventsheadedbyartistMariaGaspar.StudentsworkedalongsideartiststostencilphrasesandquestionsonthewallsandsidewalkssurroundingtheCookCountyJail.Inatechniquecalled“reversegraffiti,”theparticipants“inscribed”wordsontosurfacesusingapowerwasher.
“Insteadofapplyingpainttoasurface,you’recleaningasurface,”explainsSanchez.
Inadditiontootherstreetartclasses,YollocallialsooffersuniqueprogramslikeDigitalJournalism,wherestudentsusenarrativeandstorytellinginthemannerofThisAmericanLifeorSnapJudgementtocreatetheirownpodcasts.
ToSanchez,manyofYollocalli’sbenefitsaremoreintangiblethanthepracticalskillsthatstudentslearn.“Ithinkithelpsbuildtheircharacter,”saysSanchez.“Theyalwaysletusknowhowmuchtheylovedtheirtimewithusandhowthey’vecontinuedthetraditionofgivingbacktothecommunityordoingsomethingpositiveforwhateverneighborhoodthey’refromorforthecityat-large.”

IfollowedallthisonTwitterfromChicago,whereit’scoldlikeit’ssupposedtobe.Whenonereporterbreathlesslytweetedaboutbeing‘tuckedin’atonefair’snapstationbyMarinaAbramovic,Ithought,OhJoy.ThoughIsupposeit’sbettertohavehertuckyouinthantowakeupwithherstaringatyou.Thatwouldgivemethewillies.

Thisiswherethemarketplacementalityhasledmanyofus.Theconversationaboutwhatartisanddoesusedtobetheintellec-tualrealestatethatartistsoccupied.
Now?EveryJerkwortheightfigureshasthepublichangingontheireveryidioticword,includingartists,andbelievingthatdollarbillsequalbrain-cells. AlloverMiamiBeachDopes,Dim-Wits,andDullardsarestaringattheiriPhones,passingbyafullgorgeousviewoftheAtlanticocean,withitsschoolsofporpoisesandflyingfish,andthey’rewatchingforthelatesttweet,text,ore-mailtoarrivewithearth-shatteringnewsofwheretheGagosianpartyis,ponderingwhichdinnercantheyinsinuatethemselvesinto?
Partofmyownproblemwiththismilieuistheworrythatthisisnowhowyoungartiststhinkthisissupposedtobedone-artcareerviasocial-suction.It’saboutwhoyouknowandallmannerofhorse-shitthathasnothingtodowithbeinganartistormakingart.Iwanttoshakethemandtellthemtowakethefuckup.Theartfaircircle-jerkisacelebrationofthemarket,nottheart.Itisanenvironmentwhereeveryoneknowsthecostofeverythingandthedefinitionofnothing.
AdmittedlymylastarttriptoMiamiwastwoyearsago;whilethereweresomeglimmersofhopeinthemarginsofthisrollinggoat-fuck,thenewsthisyearthattherewasa‘nap-station’forthosewhoweretiredfromshoppingandexchanginggreatthoughtsmademethinkaboutjusthowtweeandvacuousthiswholeenterpriseis.

Q: Tell me about your background and your interest in art.
A:IamoriginallyfromAlaska,butIhavelivedalloverthecountrysinceIleftforcollege.IstudiedartattheUniversityofPugetSoundinTacoma,WA.AfterreceivingmyBA,IcompletedtheprofessionalphotographyprogramattheNewEnglandSchoolofPhotographyinBoston.IarrivedinChicagototakeoverthegallerylastspring.
Q: Are you an artist?
A:Iamanartistmyself,thoughIrarelyexhibitmyownwork.
Q: Alibi Fine Art was established in July 2010 by Adam Holtzman (now one of Alibi’s represented artists), and you took ownership in the spring of 2014. How did this transition come about?
A:BeforeItookownershipofAlibilastspringIwascuratingatasmallgalleryinUrbana,IL.AdamandIareoldfriendsfromschool,andIhadaskedhimtoconsignsomeofJosephSterling’sworktothegalleryforanexhibit.DuringourcollaborationhecameupwiththeideatoturnAlibiovertomebeforehemovedhisfamilybacktotheeastcoast.ItwassomethingIhadalwayswantedtodo,anditwasanopportunityIcouldnotpassup.
Q:The gallery has focused on photography. Will you continue to feature photography exclusively moving forward?
A:Iintendtocontinuetoexclusivelyconcentrateonphotography.ItisthemediumIknowandlovebest,andcurrentlythereareveryfewgalleriesinChicagodedicatedsolelytoit.ItookAlibionbecauseIlikedAdam’sselectionofartistsandthedirectionhehadtakenthegalleryinuptothatpoint.Deviationsareinevitable,especiallyasIaddnewartiststotheAlibirosterandexplorepotentialcollaborationswithotherorganizations,butIaimtomaintainthecorecharacteristicsestablishedearlyon.
Q: The CGN office regularly receives questions from artists about how they can get dealers to look at their work. Do you also get this question often, and are you open to reviewing new submissions even if you’re not seeking additional artists?
A:Idogetthisquestionfrequently,andIamsympathetictoit.UnfortunatelyIdonothavetimetorespondtothenumerousinquiriesIreceive,soIamnotopentolookingatunsolicitedart,especiallynotinperson.IjuryandreviewportfoliosthrougheventssuchasFilterPhotoFestival,andIencourageartiststotakeadvantageofsimilaropportunitiesiftheywanttheirworktobeseenbygalleristsandcurators.
Q: You recently moved the gallery from Montrose to your current Ravenswood address. How is your new space?
A:Thenewlocationisworkingoutwell.MostofAlibi’sregularshavefoundmebynow,andIhavegottenalotofnewfoottrafficfromeventssuchastheRavenswoodArtWalk.SharingspacewithManifoldChicagoprovidesgoodcross-disciplinarytrafficandthecloserproximitytoLillstreetArtCenterhasbenefitedusaswell.
Q: How important is foot traffic to you and the gallery?
A:Iplaceslightlymoreimportanceonthosewhoseekthegalleryoutbecausetheytendtobethemostloyalenthusiastsforthemedium,however,Ihavehadalotofluckwithrepeatvisitorswhobeganaswalk-ins.
Q: What new shows do you have scheduled this spring?
A:ComingupisDavidAkiba’shomagetoHarryCallahaninthespring,followedbyDanFarnum’scolorphotographsofurbanyouthinMichigan.Plansareintheworkstoparticipateinmoreartfairsin2015.FartherdowntheroadIwouldliketoworkwithartistsfromdisadvantagedbackgroundstoprovideawayforthemtoshowworkthatwouldotherwisegounseen.

InUptown,oneblockofftheWilsonredlineElstop,istheoldWilsonAvenueTheatre-aformervaudevilletheatreandsiteofoneofCharlieChaplin’searlyperformances.ItwasrecentlyaTCFBank.TodayitisFLATSSTUDIO,anartscenterassociatedwithFLATSapartments,basedonasimplehopethatartcanbuildcommunity.
The grand foyer of the space has a high arched ceiling, and starkwhite walls are framed by Corinthian columns. With bare boneslighting and temporary walls that are more like large signboards,FLATSSTUDIOpossessesaraw,rusticfeelingthatstrikesanap-propriateaestheticbalancefortheneighborhood.
Uptownitselfisamixofmilliondollarhomesandrundownorabandonedspaces.YouseeaStarbucksononeblockandaDollarStoreonthenext.“Wereallywantedtousethisspace,”saidJayMichael,co-founderofFLATS,“asameansofbridgingthe gap between development and gentrification.” Since the firstshowinSeptember2014,thegalleryhasattractedadiverseaudienceincludingmembersofthecommunity,SAICprofessorsandstudents,artists, and tenants from FLATS apartments. “We did not createFLATS STUDIO for our tenants, but it has been exciting to seethemattheevents,”saidMichael.FLATSSTUDIOhostsanopeningforeachshowonthethirdThursdayofeachmonth.
Thegallery’sDecembershow,Playtime,featuredworkbyroughly10artists,allofwhomexploredadifferentapproachtotheideaofplay.Inthecenteroftheroomwasasmallplasticslideandotherplaygroundstructures.NearbywasworkbyartistandFLATSSTUDIOco-curatorEdwardMuela:twoorangepapermacherifleswitharmsandfingerspoisedinagunshape(thethumbsup)forthebarrels.Andinabackroom,onthebarsofadefunctbankvaultdoor,wasaniceblueneonlightbentintoanelegantflourish.
ThenextshowplannedforFLATSSTUDIOwillbeacollaborationwithChicagoPublicSchools,featuringworkbyhighschooljuniorsandseniors.SAICgraduateandco-curatorAudraJacothasaBachelor’s degree in sculpture and aMasters inArt andTechnol-ogy.Jacot is alsoa substitute teacher for theCPSAdvancedArtsProgram.“Iamveryexcitedaboutthisshow,andthestudentsareextremelyexcitedtoshowtheirworkoutsideoftheclassroom.”
WhileartwasnotthefocuswhenFLATSwasformed,Michaelsaidthedesiretoincorporateartintothebusinesswasnatural,“andwe’reonlymovingforward.”PriortoFLATSSTUDIO,thecompanyusedvacantgroundlevelcommercialspaceintheirbuildingsforexhibitions.Forayear,JCSteinbrunnerhostedhis SalonSeries at theFLATS1325WilsonAve. location.Beforethat,ChicagoartistandBravo’sWorkofArtcontestant,YoungSunHan,curatedpopupshowsfeaturingworkbyotherlocalartists.
ArtistsfortheFLATSSTUDIOareselectedbyanapplicationprocess.“Ingeneral,whatwearelookingforisashowtheme,”saidJacot.Alloftheartistsfeaturedarelocal,whichisimportanttoMichaelandJacot,inordertokeeptheprogramcenteredonChicago.“Wewantallaspectsofourbusinesstobehyper-local.”
InJanuarytheFLATSofficeswillmovetoUptown’sformerSalvationArmybuilding,wheretheywilldisplayphotographyfromChicago-basedCo-EditCollection,awebsitethatsellsworkby
professionalcommercialphotographers.Co-EditwasfoundedbyChicago-based photographer TimKlein. “We just let Tim takeoverthespace,”saidMichael.MichaelhasalsocuratedasectionofworkonCo-Edit’ssite.
FLATSresidentialspacesarealsofilledwithoriginalart,eachbuildingfeaturingtheworkofoneartist.At4875Magnoliaphotographs by Bob Rehak adorn the walls. In the 1970s RehaklivedandworkedinUptownandphotographedresidents.“Rehak’sworkisalmosttheprecursortothesite‘HumansofNewYork,’”saidMichael of thepopularwebsite that featuresportraits of everydaypeopleonthestreetsofNewYorkCity.HangingRehak’swork inUptownisasubtlewayofconnectingcurrentresidentswiththepast.
“Wehavehadalotoffunmeetingalloftheartists,”saidJacot,andwithsuchalargenumberofartistsapplyingtoshowinthespace,sheisexcitedaboutallofthepossibilities.
Inadditiontosupportingtheartsthroughexhibitions,FLATSoffersartistsreducedrenttoliveinthestudioapartments.Toapplyartistsmustdemonstrateacommitmenttotheirworkandbebelowacertainannual salary. “This is anotherwaywecan support the arts,” saidMichael. In the future,FLATSwill includeworkspace forartists,includingametalshop,woodworkingfacilities,andotheramenities.
FLATSSTUDIOmaynothavebeeninMichael’soriginalcompanydesign,butithascertainlymadeastrongimpression.
