NDHSAA/Farmers Union Insurance Distinguished Students

Editorial note: We will be publishing a series of articles on getting to know this year’s distinguished student finalists.

Martin Altenburg from Fargo North High School is this year’s NDHSAA/Farmers Union Insurance Distinguished Student finalist. He is the son of Kent and Kris Altenburg and the brother of Lily and Amy. Martin is seventeen years old and enjoys listening to music playing the violin, going for walks, and obsessing over college applications.

While attending Fargo North, Martin has selected physics as his favorite subject stating “”it is awe-inspiring to know that the world can be explained by mathematics and a set of concise laws.” He is very involved in extracurricular activities, where he participates in cross country, swimming, track, student council, environmental club, orchestra, Science Olympiad, Knowledge Bowl, Student Ambassadors, NHS, History and Spanish Club. With Martin’s busy schedule he still finds time to give back to his community. These activities include: Key Club, Relay for Life, and serves as a religious educational leader.

Upon graduation, Martin plans to study biology, physics or engineering. Martin has recently been accepted to Stanford University, congrats. With that degree, he envisions himself being a biomedical entrepreneur.

When asked, “What is the first thing you would do if you were elected President?” Martin’s response would be “make higher education more attainable for people of all backgrounds.”

Outside of his family, Martin admires his grandmother because, “She has taught me the intrinsic value of learning while also being a walking encyclopedia on the history of Fargo and North Dakota.”

Martin points out that the ability to view from multiple perspectives is the most important characteristic of a leader.

We asked Martin several unique questions to get to know him better. He stated his pet peeve is slow walkers in the hallway at his school. His perfect vacation would be to Portala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet or the Great Barrier Reef. He could go a day without his phone and his favorite holiday is Christmas because “It is basically a full month of happiness, festivities and holiday hysteria. His response to the question of whom he would like to have a meal with living or dead included the following: Dmitri Shostakovich, Hypatia Friedrich Nietzsche and Leonardo Da Vinci. If we made of movie of his life, Ryan Reynolds would play the role of Martin because he is absurdly funny. And finally, Martin’s favorite family tradition is going to his grandparents lake in Western Minnesota.

Martin did want to include that he has three cats, Smokey, Fluffy, and Chubs.

Congratulations to Martin Altenburg, this year’s NDHSAA/Farmer Union Insurance Distinguished Student finalist and best of luck in his future endeavors.

$500 beginning July 1, 2017. • Board altered Athletic Review and Fine Arts Review process to include reviewing and voting on all coaches advisory, District Chair

and Class A Review recommendations and only those approved by a simple majority at Athletic Review and Fine Arts Review shall be brought to NDHSAA Board for action.

NDHSAA Board Approves New Pitch Count Regulation

The North Dakota High School Activities Association’s Board of Directors met Thursday, December 1.Highlights on the Board’s Agenda included the approval of a pitch count regulation which goes into effect for the upcoming 2017 NDHSAA baseball season.

The new regulation applies to both the Class A and Class B divisions. Details of the new pitch count regulation are as follows:

During the regular season, a pitcher can throw no more than 120 pitches per day and in turn will be limited to throwing 0-30 pitches on zero days of rest since last pitching appearance (next day), 31-45 pitches on one day of rest, 46-60 pitches on two days of rest, 61-75 pitches on three days of rest and 76-120 on four days of rest since last pitching appearance.

During the postseason, a pitcher can throw a maximum of 135 pitches for the entire tournament. A pitcher is limited to a maximum daily total of 120 pitches during the postseason and in turn will be limited to thrown 0-45 pitches on zero days of rest since last pitching appearance (next day), 46-90 pitches on one day of rest, and 91-120 on two days of rest since last pitching appearance.

“The Pitch Count Committee did a great job of coming up with a regulation that fit North Dakota,” NDHSAA Assistant Director Justin Fletschock said. “We surveyed our state’s baseball coaches both to collect data on the number of severe arm injuries and to get feedback on pitch counts. What we found is that we have a very low surgical injury rate in North Dakota. We also found out that most of our coaches were already using pitch counts to protect their pitchers.“I think we found a good balance of protecting pitcher’s arms and not drastically altering the way the game has been played,” Fletschock added.

Additional details of the new NDHSAA pitch count regulation are:

Daily limits: If a team plays two games in one day, a pitcher can pitch in both games, just add the totals together.

If the daily or postseason maximum pitch count is reached during an at bat, the pitcher is allowed to finish that batter.

Home book is the official book for pitch counts. It is recommended that teams compare pitch numbers during the game.

If a pitch count tracker is present, he or she is the official pitch count.

Tournament Managers will track pitch counts during postseason.

Play-in games are counted as postseason contests and shall be included in the postseason tournament maximum for pitchers.

Intentional walks (IBB) do not count towards a pitcher’s’ pitch count total.

If a pitcher is found to have exceeded the pitch count regulation the game will be ruled a forfeit and the player in violation must sit out the following varsity contest.

Other recommendations with the pitch count regulation are that coaches use care when choosing the pitchers next position after pitching (i.e. playing catcher).

The National Federation of High School Associations (NFHS) Board of Directors approved the pitch count policy change in July, which required all High School Associations in the nation to adopt their own pitch count regulation.

NDHSAA /Farmers Union Insurance Distinguished Student Applications are available on the NDHSAA website under “Administrators and Coaches”, then “Forms”.

Objectives & Goals: To recognize deserving young people who are the “backbone” of interscholastic activities, not necessarily the leader, but the individual whose participation in high school activities strengthens the program for participants, the school and the community.

Criteria: Applicant must be a junior the year the application is submitted. Student must be a participant as a player, manager, statistician or other role in at least one NDHSAA sponsored activity in the current year. Note: Participation does not necessarily mean excellence, honors or even active play. Student must be a good citizen and role model to his/her peers as well as a contributor to the community. The committee will evaluate applicants’ essays on their demonstration of sportsmanship and citizenship and how the applicant feels these values derived from activities will provide them lifelong benefits.

Selection Process: One applicant per school is allowed. A pre-screening committee will narrow the applicants to six finalists. The final selection will be based upon an interview conducted by a Selection Committee. Immediately following the interviews, the results will be announced at an NDHSAA sponsored luncheon for finalists and their families. Student must be available for interviews the ENTIRE morning of May 3.

Deadlines: Completed application forms must be postmarked no later than April 1. Applications postmarked after April 1 will not be considered. Finalists will be notified by mid-April. Interviews and the luncheon announcing the results will be held on May 3rd.
