“THE IRON GIANT” “LADY SNOWBLOOD”

Joe Bob Briggs Presents: CLASS OF 1984 (1982, 35mm)Introduced by midnight movie icon Joe Bob Briggs!

The year is 1984. A rabid pack of rampaging punk teens run our schools, our drugs and our prostitutes. Brutality and decadence are everywhere. Enter first-year teacher Andrew Norris (Perry King), who’s forced to violently turn the tables on the bloodthirsty gang before their trashwave swallows the town alive. Relentlessly seedy, overflowing with assault, suicide, rac-ism, drug use and crime crime crime, all of which is perpetrated by minors, CLASS OF 1984 is a perfect exploitation film! The tension of victimization and vengeance create some of the most stirring scenes of violent retribution on record. But beyond all this, there’s a bitterly absorbing air of human helplessness and leather-clad heartlessness that makes this movie the flat-out best in its genre.

Video Vortex: BAD MAGIC (1997)There are regular movies. And then there is BAD MAGIC. Produced by underground superheroes Mark and John Polonia as part of a distribution deal with Blockbuster Video (!), this invigorating D.I.Y. dream-blast breaks new ground in side-stepping reality. Amos is shot in cold blood by a gang called The Red Claws, who look like team members of the paint depart-ment at Home Depot.

Naturally, Amos’s brother, Renny, summons a demon named Blahkeeblahkay to enact his gore-soaked revenge. Death by voo-doo doll! Death by the undead! And in a cinematic first, death by toilet paper!! With its unexpected tone shifts, collage-like structure, and effects that were probably rendered on an Apple IIe computer, BAD MAGIC is a special kind of cinematic discovery that only occurs once or twice every five-thousand years. It’s also the only movie in history with a credit that reads, “Voodoo Consultant by Dr. Ishmeial Atuki.”

Temple of Schlock: FLYING MASTERS OF KUNG FU (1979, 35mm)Rare 35mm screening presented by the American Genre Film Archive! Introduced by Temple of Schlock’s Chris Poggiali.

Expect to see a whole lotta kung fu, but not much flying, as QUEEN BOXER star Judy Lee -- wearing a bone through her hair like Pebbles Flintstone -- sets out to find her father’s killers, and quickly realizes they’ve framed her for the crime. Along the way she encounters Taiwanese knock-offs of the One-Armed Swordsman and Golden Swallow, as well as a guy called Lord Ku who shoots silver skulls from his shoulders. Don’t miss the chance to see a rare widescreen 35mm presentation of this old school kung fu flick, which Pebbles would probably describe as a “Yabba Dabba Doozy!”

Monday Night Thread-up: HOWARD THE DUCK (1986, 35mm)Back in 1986, Lucasfilm and Universal thought that it would be a good idea to bring an anthropomorphic duck named Howard to screen in live-action glory. He’s a private eye! He talks! He carries condoms made for ducks! Somehow, the powers at be, thought there was a recipe for success here. And they were right. HOWARD THE DUCK is typically regarded as a flop and as a completely misguided attempt at giving children a talking duck movie. But it’s bigger than that.

HOWARD THE DUCK straddles the line between careful adaptation and a re-imagining of a property as something decidedly different (and perhaps much more adult) than its source material would suggest. It’s not every day that you get a studio produced comic book movie from the director of MESSIAH OF EVIL, the creator of STAR WARS and features a cigar chomping duck who thinks he’s Sam Spade and has a lust for human women. Cherish it. It’ll never happen again.

Fantastic Fest Presents: LADY SNOWBLOOD (1973)Gory revenge is raised to the level of visual poetry in Toshiya Fujita’s stunning LADY SNOWBLOOD. A major inspiration for Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill saga, this endlessly inventive film, set in late nineteenth-century Japan, charts the single-minded path of vengeance taken by a young woman (Meiko Kaji) whose parents were the unfortunate victims of a gang of brutal criminals. Fujita creates a wildly entertaining action film of remarkable craft, an effortless balancing act between beauty and violence.

Prints of Darkness: PRINCE OF DARKNESS (1987, 35mm)To begin the new year of Prints of Darkness, what better to show than its namesake movie? Donald Pleasence from direc-tor John Carpenter’s HALLOWEEN and BIG TROUBLE’s Victor Wong star as, respectively, a priest and a university pro-fessor who team with a group of the latter’s students to try to unlock the secrets of a large canister unearthed in a church base-ment that may contain the liquid essence of the devil himself. The result is possession, bizarre dreams, bloody confrontations, a cameo by Alice Cooper (who also sings the end-credits song) as a malevolent street person and more, set to one of Carpenter’s most chilling scores. Shot in moody widescreen, PRINCE OF DARKNESS is a creepy highlight of Carpenter’s filmography; come experience its terrors in 35mm on the big screen!

Girlie Night: SIXTEEN CANDLES (1984)Beneath the comic exaggerations and sweet romanticism, the ordinary geeks in his films all gave me the same life-changing advice: “Prepare for the worst, but don’t stop hoping for the best.” And no character exemplifies this wisdom better than Samantha Baker in SIXTEEN CANDLES.

Whenever I had a particularly rough day in school, or an extremely awkward encounter with my unrequited crush, I always reminded myself that Samantha had it worse. Like, did a freshman guy ever try to dance with me while spastically yelling, “Very hot! Very hot!” Um, no. Did my entire family ever forget my birthday? No way! Did my grandmother ever feel me up? HECK NO. Samantha, on the other hand, endured all of that crap (and more!) and she STILL got to kiss the hottest senior over a tasty birthday cake in his fancy house. In celebration of those tiny (yet monumental) teenage triumphs over adversity and awkwardness, join us for this 80s-tastic Girlie Night screen-ing, where we’ll pass sex test notes, stare obsessively at Jake Ryan and toast to the wonderful legacy of John Hughes.

Victory Screening: THE WIZ (1978)A free screening for Victory members only! Sign up by 1/17 to receive an invitation to attend.

This beloved musical brings together legends Michael Jackson and Diana Ross for a retelling of the WIZARD OF OZ story. This time Oz looks a lot like a bizarro New York City, and The Wiz is played by Richard Pryor!

Girlie Night: BRIDESMAIDS Champagne Party (2011)In the movie that set the standard for women-driven comedy (not to mention bridal showers), Kristin Wiig shines as Annie, a woman tasked with the most daunting challenge known to womenkind: serving as the maid of honor. She’s a hot mess, but she’s a lovable hot mess, and it’s impossible not to root for her, even as she falls prey to an over-achieving nemesis (Rose Byrne), a noncommittal douchebag (Jon Hamm) and a motley crew of bridesmaids, including Melissa McCarthy in her most hilarious role to date.

We won’t have puppy party favors (sorry), but your ticket includes champagne (if you’re 21 or over, otherwise you get Helen’s pink lemonade instead) in a flute that you can use to toast over and over again, then take home! So slip on your most heinous bridesmaid dress and join us for an evening of hilarious awkwardness (quoting along is encouraged), bodily disfunction and a little Wilson Phillips karaoke.

EVIL DEAD Double Feature (1983)NECA will have their Evil Dead 2 product line on display in the lobby along with the public debut of the brand new Ash vs Evil Dead toy line based on the current hit Starz series, plus giveaways for a few lucky audience members!

Watch Sam Raimi’s horror classic THE EVIL DEAD and his sequel/remake horror-comedy EVIL DEAD II back-to-back!

Whether you’re a rabid gore nut or the wimpy old Pope, you’re well aware that the most monumental horror series of the 20th Century is THE EVIL DEAD trilogy. Big-time filmmaker Sam Raimi and big-chin actor Bruce Campbell knocked out their baby teeth on these movies, heading deep into the woods to scare up massively effective shocks on a miniscule budget. And when the first EVIL DEAD hit theaters, horror cinema was altered forever.

Now THE EVIL DEAD has risen again to tear apart the big, big screen! Join not-quite-fearless warrior Ash in a fluid-soaked chainsaw-wielding battle with undead demonoids who possess, violate and kill using methods that would make Satan himself blush! It’s the fright film that reinvented nightmares for an entire generation, and it’s bigger, bloodier and backer than ever to tear your skull out through your eye sockets!

IP MAN 3 (2015)Donnie Yen (upcoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 2) ignites the screen in a return to the role that made him an icon - as Ip Man, the real-life Wing Chun grandmaster who mentored Bruce Lee. In this explosive third installment of the blockbuster martial arts series, when a band of brutal gangsters led by a crooked property de-veloper (Mike Tyson) make a play to take over the city, Master Ip is forced to take a stand. Fists will fly as some of the most incredible fight scenes ever filmed play out on the big screen in this soon-to-be genre classic.

THE IRON GIANT (1999)In October of 1957, America had plenty to be worried about. Rock ‘n’ roll. Television. The bomb. In the small town of Rock-well, Maine, Annie Hughes is just worried about putting supper on the table for herself and her nine-year-old son, Hogarth. A single mother holding down a job at the local diner, Annie has her hands full with Hogarth, headstrong and imaginative, always on the lookout for the latest attempted takeover by mutant aliens or subversive invaders. So when a local fisherman comes into the diner with a tall tale about a huge metal man falling into the sea, the only one to pay him much attention is Hogarth, who sets out exploring to find the enormous robot. What he does find is a 50-foot giant with an insatiable appetite for metal and a childlike curiosity about its new world.

MLK Day: Free screening of SELMA (2014)Join us for a screening of SELMA to honor Dr. King’s legacy on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

In 1965, Rev. Martin Luther King Jr – fresh from winning the Nobel Peace Prize -- and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference embarked on a campaign of civil disobedience to call attention to these tactics. Operating out of the Alabama town of Selma, King rallied his activists for a march to the state capital of Montgomery, where they would confront Wallace.

Along the way, King’s resolve would be tested when FBI director J. Edgar Hoover released secretly recorded tapes that threatened to tarnish his image and shatter his marriage to Coretta Scott King.

Action Pack: MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL Quote-along (1975)That’s right, one of the greatest and most quotable movies of all time is getting the quote-along treatment and you can be there for all its sword fighting, coconut clomping glory at the Alamo Drafthouse!

As always we’ll have the best lines subtitled karaoke style for your quoting pleasure as well as some of the silliest songs you can hope to sing. We’ll also have swords for everyone, coconut halves for you to bring your imaginary horses to life and a test of will, dexterity and might prior to the show to recruit some brave knights to our cause (don’t go second guessing your favorite colors now).
