1 January / February The Newsletter of the Maryland Public Purchasing Association President’s Message Karen Reddersen, SPHR, CPPO, CPPB Hello and Happy New Year to our MPPA membership. I hope that everyone was able to take some time to enjoy family and friends this holiday season. It is a time for us to be thankful for the gifts we have been given and to celebrate the joys of each other. As we flip the calendar to a new year and make our resolutions, I would encourage you to think about work/life balance. I know everyone is doing more with less which, in our world, means the end user wants twice the quality for half the cost. Every member I speak with has been given more responsibility. Given the procurement work ethic, the responsibilities are met but there is a personal price that takes its toll over time. While we can’t ignore the workload, carve out some “self-time”. Take a walk on your lunch hour….take your lunch hour….read a book when you are taking your lunch hour! Don’t feel guilty when you leave at 5 p.m. on Wednesdays to go to the gym or book club. Do the snoopy dance! This time will help you to rejuvenate. It is not always easy to celebrate ourselves but know that you deserve it and it is important for you to give yourself a gift as well. I want to congratulate the following CPPO graduates from Maryland: Timothy Krus, Gary Sightler, and Daniel Mays. Congratulations also to Sean Watson, Kerrie Koopman, Steven Kline, Lisa Carter, Angela McIntosh-Davis, Tamara Roberts and Nola Song on receiving their CPPB designation. Great job! I am honored to serve as your MPPA President for another term. I hope you can join us this year at the 2013 MPPA Officer’s Installation Ceremony and membership meeting on January 26 th in Annapolis. It will be a fun and festive time. As always, the volunteers on the board and MPPA committees are here to serve your needs. If you have any questions or concerns, or would like to take a more active role in our MPPA organization, please reach out to me at [email protected] or to another member of our team. President’s Message Karen Reddersen, SPHR, CPPO, CPPB

Hello and Happy New Year to our MPPA membership. I hope you can join us this year at the 2013 MPPA Officer’s Installation Ceremony and membership meeting on January 26th in Annapolis. It will be a fun and festive time. As always, the volunteers on the board and MPPA committees are here to serve your needs. Recruiting in 2013 I thank everyone for their assistance in forwarding potential new members to me. As always, members are encouraged to promote MPPA membership to public purchasers who aren't members of the association. I consider all members to be part of the Membership Committee. Please continue to refer any potential new members to me, and if they have questions. I am continuing the emailing of invitations to NIGP Members that are in Maryland to join our Organization. As always, I still need your input to help recruit members. Whenever you happen to be attending a Procurement type meeting, seminar, or function, strike up a conversation with someone at this meeting, seminar or function and then during your conversation ask them if they are a member of MPPA and if they aren’t, ask them if they would be interested. Emphasize to them or to your co-workers that our Association is promoting education as one our benefits for joining and you might even suggest that they browse the MPPA Website for further information about our Organization. Since everyone across the country is feeling the budget crunch, some employers may not pay for educational training. MPPA has funds available to help members with their education through scholarships and reimbursement so that you may further your careers in the field of Procurement and consider becoming certified as a CPPB or CPPO. Margie J. Gordon, CPPB Membership Chair

MPPA is gearing up for "March is Purchasing Month". Due to the positive feedback, MPPA wishes to continue its training efforts in March similar to the training held in March 2012. However, we need your feedback. Identify the areas in which you think you or your colleagues may need additional training and submit to Carla Tucker at [email protected] and Cheryl Pearman [email protected]. Additionally, we are looking for location options that are easily accessible, centrally located with excessive parking. Last but certainly not least, I would like to thank Cheryl Pearman for joining the Program Chair committee as Co-Chair.

The Maryland General Assembly 2013 session will begin on January 9th and adjourn on April 8th. There is a new Maryland General Assembly website: http://mgaleg.maryland.gov/webmga/frm1st.aspx?tab=home You may want to visit it prior to the start of the session to understand how to search for your bills of interest. There are already 10 State Procurement bills filed for the 2013 session as of 12-17-2012. It looks like it is going to be another busy legislative session. I hope you and yours had a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

During the 2012 NIGP Forum in Seattle Washington this past August, I had the privilege of hearing Vernice “FlyGirl”Armour speak. She was fantastic! Very motivational and very inspiring. Through this article she was so gracious to write for MPPA, I am pleased to share her flight plan for each of us with you. So sit back, put on your seatbelts and ENJOY the ride. Brandi

Hey MPPA Fly Peeps! Thank you for the opportunity to connect and be of service. But, that's what WE do, isn't it? It's not just a "9 - 5" job, we are serving our community, our global community, everyday. How we engage with each other, our leadership and our community, is key. Through powerful engagement and taking action together...we create breakthroughs and accomplish the mission! Before setting out to create a breakthrough in the situations in your life, ask yourself some defining questions to clarify what you want out of life and what you’re willing to do to achieve it. Listed below are a few questions that I ask EVERYONE I coach before we jump into action:

Are you ready to be a true person of action?

Are you ready to generate concrete plans that hold the power to transform your

life?

Are you ready to break free from the limiting beliefs that are holding you back?

Are you just simply tired of settling and “waiting” for permission to engage in

life!?!?

Step 1: Create Your Flight Plan Where are you, and where do you want to be? The most important component of this step is DO NOT think about the “How” when you are creating your dream or goal. Only envision WHAT you want in the very beginning. If you let yourself think about the “How” to soon, you may let it weaken your dream.

Page 13: January / February - Amazon S3 · January / February The Newsletter of the Maryland Public Purchasing Association ... the Department of General Services in Montgomery County. Great

http://mppainc.org Maryland Public Purchasing Association Page 13

Step 2: Pre-Flight This is the step where you start thinking about the “How” and mitigating the risks. This is also the time when you share your plan. Be discerning here, because you can become vulnerable to criticism and people I like to call “energy vampires”. You might even find yourself doubting whether you can do it or not. Don’t get upset about the criticism and doubt – it’s all just data. Don’t take it personally. Take it all in, use the information to help you make a stronger plan, then move forward into action. Step 3: Take-Off Think of the Space Shuttle during lift off and the amount of fuel needed. This step is where YOU will need to have the leadership buy-in, team support or even emotional support at home. Figure out what “fuel type” YOU need and take-off! Step 4: Execution Ok, you’ve taken flight and you are in execution mode navigating the inevitable minefields and obstacles that will come up. Be flexible and adapt. Change is the only constant and remember: opportunities don’t go away, other people take advantage of them! Execute…no excuses. Step 5: Review, Recharge and Re-Attack! Review your successes and failures. Recharge emotionally, physically and intellectually. And finally, re-attack. There are only two ways to succeed, the first time or again! Hopefully, this article has been helpful for YOU! Remember you HAVE permission to engage…Cleared Hot!

New Years Trivia

According to the records as found with the National Insurance Crime Bureau, the number of vehicles stolen on the New Year’s Day is much higher than that registered on any other national holiday.

Fireworks were banned and thus came into existence the Time Square New Year's Eve Ball that became highly famous for its illumination on New Year’s Day. It was in 1907 that the first ball was lighted up, made of wood and iron and weighing around 700-pound. The first ball was decorated with over a hundred 25-watts light bulbs. Time Square New Year's Eve Ball of today has come to weigh around 11,875-pounds and is 12 feet in diameter. The ball is designed by Waterford Crystal and adorned with nearly 2,668 Waterford crystals. The wartime restrictions became the reason for not lowering the New Year's Eve ball in 1942 and 1943.

The first month of the year in the Gregorian calendar- January has been named after God Janus, who holds two faces. One face of the God look backwards, while the other one look towards the future and represents the ‘spirit of the opening’.

An interesting trivia about the New Year is the wishes being written and collected from visitors to Times Square in New York City. Pieces of confetti strewn across the Times Square are picked up and used by visitors to the site for conveying their greetings and wishes for the New Year. The wishes are gathered and added to the ton of the confetti, which is eventually being showered on the crowd gathered in Times Square for celebrations marked to ring in the New Year.

People across different cultures are seen consuming different kinds of lucky foods for the New Year’s Day. Some people believe that eating fish, pork, legumes, lentils and cooked green can bring in good fortune in the upcoming year and hence they arrange for meals comprising the auspicious food for their celebrations on the New Year’s Eve. Consumption of chicken or lobsters is considered to bring in bad luck for the entire year because chicken moves backwards. It is widely believed that eating unlucky foods for celebrating New Year’s Day might cause a reversal of their good fortune.

The practice of is not a few years old but its origin can be traced back to as early as the Babylonians. According to the data, nearly 40-45% of the people in the US take a pledge on the New Year’s Day. Most of the resolutions taken by people include issues such as weight loss, quitting of bad habits such as alcohol consumption and smoking. The research also throws up an interesting trivia about New Year resolutions. It is seen that merely a few stick to their resolutions till the end of the first month of the New Year, while nearly 25% of the people forget about their resolutions before the end of January.

Words Of Wisdom…Take 2!

In Photo: Pat Greco

In the Nov/Dec issue of The Fine Print, ours Words of Wisdom came from fellow member Pat Greco. She offered this suggestion to each of us, which is very fitting for the

start of a new year…

“..take some time now to sit alone and think about the person inside

of you who is observing all the changes that are taking place in your

life. Get to know him/her, because there’s more to you than you

know.” Pat did just that as she wrote in her article. She learned that she was not just that

“Supervisor”, “Procurement Analyst”, “Manager”…”Wife”, “Mother”, “Daughter”, ….she was an “ARTIST”. I would like to share with you a few of her pieces. They are great! I

hope you enjoy them as much as I did.

Happy New Year! I hope all of you will take a minute and set a few goals for yourself to meet this year. We won’t call them resolutions because we all know that the majority of us will not stick to our resolutions! Set a realistic goal and just make it happen. My goal/motto for 2013 is going to be “Handle it with a Smile”…yup even if I don’t want to. This is a goal I should have started while Christmas shopping last year…don’t get me started with those “Walmartians”! I hope all of you had a very Merry Christmas and a Happy Blessed New Year!
