Members and staff rang in 2011 with a New Year’s Eve celebration! On New Year’s Day, a Holiday Open House in the Family Gathering Room was a great way to welcome the new year. There was plenty to do inside despite the cold weather outside! Members enjoyed a variety of musical performances and educational presenta- tions, as well as other engaging activities such as touring our art gallery, stopping by the café for coffee, socializing at the weekly cocktail hour, visiting with pets and students, baking favorite winter snacks and much more! The annual Sweetheart Ball on Valentine’s Day drew a big crowd with lots of dancing and laughter shared with college friends from St. John Fisher. A campaign advocating for seniors and against proposed cuts for senior services was set in motion. This multi-faceted drive included advocacy centers at The Friendly Home, Linden Knoll, Cloverwood and Glenmere, template letters and talking points to help communicate the issues to state legislators, email blasts to employees, and an informational page on our website. Black History Month was celebrated with biographies and discussions of famous African- Americans, as well as history, music and movies. Some say the official start of summer is TheFriendly Home’s annual Strawberry Festival, heldeach June!

Our neighborsat Linden Knollenjoyed theRose GardenTea, a lovelyevent held each June.

Many Members and their families attended therelease of Monarch butterflies in our CourtyardGarden, with each having an opportunity to have abutterfly rest on their hands before flying off!

The Friendly Home took a new approach to theMember/family summer picnics: during one week inJuly, a large tent was pitched in the employee parkinglot just to the right of the building. On each day ofthat week, one unit picnic was held (i.e., Morgan Placeon Monday, Selden Place on Tuesday, etc.). This funand convenient set up proved to be a big hit and willbe repeated in 2012.

Patriotic activities abounded! Members wore red,white and blue on the 4th, shared IndependenceDay memories and traditions, and sang along withtheir favorite all-American tunes.

During the dog days of summer, Members parti-cipated in classic summertime fun such as anouting to a Rochester Red Wings day game, a trip for ice cream, a fishing expedition and awatermelon social.

The Friendly Home, along with its partners in theSenior Health Alliance of Greater Rochester, theDaisy Marquis Jones Foundation and the St. JohnFisher College Wegmans School of Nursing, wasawarded a grant in the amount of $450,000 toadvance the nursing profession in our community.

The New York State Department of Health con-ducted its annual inspection of The Friendly Home.A new survey methodology was used in 2011 forthe first time by inspectors, which was designedto better and more consistently evaluate thequality of nursing home care and services. TheFriendly Home’s survey results were outstanding!

Members marked the tenth anniversary ofSeptember 11 with a remembrance service.

Members went “back to school” with a variety of activities focused on social studies, geographyand writing, as well as a spelling bee and homeeconomics baking.

O C T O B E R N O V E M B E R D E C E M B E ROktoberfest was celebrated with a travelogue,German trivia, traditions and a themed dinner.

Members were treated to a Halloween costumeparade featuring the students of Allen CreekElementary School! Ghosts, goblins, witches,warlocks and more gave our Members a thrill.Halloween festivities continued with a display ofpumpkins decorated by Friendly Home depart-ments and nursing units. Members, families,visitors and guests voted on their favorites. TheSocial Work/Admissions department came in topswith creativity!

A Veteran’s Day event onNovember 11 was plannedby Lindsay PlaceMembers to recognizeveterans living at The Friendly Home. The program included the Pledge of Allegiance,patriotic songs, amoment of silence,prayer, and the presentation of “prayersquares” to over 30Members who served inour armed forces.

A Thanksgiving Day Open House providedMembers and families special time to be togetherand count their blessings.

As winter approached, Members’ service projects included making hand warmers and snuggies!

Parties, entertainment and good cheer on everyunit infused the Home with the holiday spirit!Members enjoyed a cookie exchange to share andsample their favorite holiday recipes and showedoff their creative skills in the making of a ginger-bread and candy garden for the annual SweetCreations Gingerbread House Display at theGeorge Eastman House.
