We service a 2006 Fiat Grande Punto 1,4 and recently replaced the rear brake discs and brake pads using genuine Fiat parts. The customer is now complaining of noisy brakes when braking whilst travelling down long hills. We have checked the rear brakes and thoroughly cleaned them

with brake cleaner but cant stop the noise. Can Autodata help?

Yes, we are aware of this problem which may affect models manufactured before March 2007.

The noise you describe occurs when the brake pads vibrate in the rear brake caliper. The cure for this problem is to fit a mass damper to each rear brake caliper (see illustration). The mass damper kit is available from any Fiat dealership parts department.

PID (PARAMETER IDENTIFICATION) TRIGGER FUNCTIONSAVE TIME WITH THE...

A very handy feature of Snap-ons diagnostic software is the parameter identification (PID) trigger function.

This function helps you to keep track of the data produced by the vehicle while youre carrying out your diagnosis, meaning you dont need to keep watching your scan tools screen or have someone else helping you out.

You can set minimum and maximum values and if your data goes outside of these, the PID trigger function will automatically save it for you to refer back to.

For example, lets work with a vehicles intake air temperature sensor:

Lets keep the minimum as 0 volts and enter 4.5 volts as the maximum.

If you disconnect the sensor from the vehicle, the reading goes above the maximum line, then the scan tool records a few more frames of data before saving it, so you dont have to keep checking the screen.

A green line then shows at what point the data was saved, and in the tools settings you can tell it how many frames of data you want it to record after the readings have gone beyond the minimum and maximum levels that you set up earlier.

Once you have got this running as you want, it will save you a lot of time when it comes to recording data and diagnosing your vehicles.

You select the trigger icon, then press Set Trigger.

Then you use the + and buttons to set the trigger levels to the minimum and maximum levels that you need.
