friend of the Kingdom. He has massaged, in a typically understated way, Saudi-British re-lations over many years, in such a way that both have profited.

Al Rawabi Awards started in 2007 with a mission to recognize British citizens with outstanding contributions to Saudi-British relations in different fields such as educa-tion, medicine, history, etc. Every year, the Saudi British Society chooses two winners from among a list of candidates of high merit nominated by members of the Soci-ety.

Al Rawabi Saudi British Awards

The annual Al Rawabi Awards hosted by the Saudi British Society was held on Janu-ary 20th, 2010 at the Institute of Directors, in London, United Kingdom. The event was attended by Rawabi’s Group Chairman Sh. Abdulaziz AlTurki, Rawabi Group CEO, Mr. Osman A. Ibrahim, Executive Director of Rawabi Trading & Contracting Mr. Salem O. Hussein, and Coprorate Communications Officer, Mr. Mohammed AlTurki.

Sh. Abdulaziz AlTurki presented this year’s awards to:

1. Professor nigel Heaton: a well-known Liver Transplant Surgeon who is also the Head of the Transplant Unit at Kings Uni-versity Hospital, Denmark Hill, London. He has been awarded for his contribution to promoting exchange in the field of can-cer research, liver and pancreas transplant through the Saudi Cancer Foundation and the recently formed Saudi Charitable Foun-dation for Promoting Organ Donation.

2. Colonel nigel bromage:Colonel Bromage’s relationship with Saudi Arabia roots back to 1963, when he was sent to Saudi to set up the British Military Mission to the Saudi Arabian National Guard (SANG). He was later advanced to OBE for his work with SANG. Nigel stayed in the Arabian Peninsula for most of the rest of his service. After his military service, Ni-gel was retained by Saudi Officials as a loyal

ALKHOBAR: It was carnival time along the Alkhobar Corniche on Thursday evening, with nearly 10,000 Saudis and expatriates of all age groups taking part in the 15th An-nual Charity Run.

A brainchild of philanthropist and promi-nent businessman Abdul Aziz Alturki, the event attracted a large number of young Saudis from all over the Kingdom. They

Completed staff work is the study of a problem, and presentation of a solution, by a staff member, in such form that all that remains to be done on the part of the boss is to indicate approval or disapproval of the completed action. The words “completed action” are emphasized because the more difficult the problem is, the more the ten-dency is to present the problem to the boss in a piecemeal fashion.

It is your duty as a staff member to work out the details. You should not consult your boss in the determination of those details, no matter how perplexing they may be. You may and should consult other staff mem-bers. The product, whether it involves the pronouncement of a new policy or affects an established one, when presented to the boss for approval or disapproval, must be worked out in a finished form.

The impulse which often comes to the in-experienced staff member, to ask the boss what to do, recurs more often when the problem is difficult. It is accompanied by a feeling of mental frustration. It is easy to ask the boss what to do, and it appears too easy for the boss to answer. Resist the im-pulse. You will succumb to it only if you do not know your job.

It is your job to advise your boss what she or he ought to do, not to ask your boss what you ought to do. The boss needs answers, not questions. Your job is to study, write, restudy, and rewrite until you have evolved a single proposed action--the best one of all you have considered. Your boss merely approves or disapproves.

Do not worry your boss with long explana-tions and memos. Writing a memo to your boss does not constitute completed staff work. But writing a memo for your boss to send to someone else does. Your views should be placed before the boss in finished form so that the boss can make them his or her views simply by signing the document. In most instances, completed staff work results in a single document prepared for the signature of the boss without accom-panying comment. If the proper result is reached, the boss will usually recognize it at once. If the boss wants comment or expla-nation, she or he will ask for it.

The theory of completed staff work does not preclude a rough draft, but the rough draft must not be a half-baked idea. It must be complete in every respect except that it lacks the requisite number of copies and need not be neat. But a rough draft...

came from as far as Najran and Baha. Fili-pinos, Indians, Pakistanis, Americans and Britons all played an active part.”It was an extraordinary feeling,” said former Saudi Aramco executive Bidah Mejdal Al-Gahtani, who took part in the 70 plus category and bagged second prize.

“The weather was excellent. Though the sun shone brightly, there was a cool breeze blowing across the vast Arabian Sea, mak-ing the entire experience exhilarating and mind-blowing.”

Children below the age of 15 were seen cracking jokes and having fun while sprint-ing along the well-developed and pictur-esque Alkhobar beach.”It was a fun time,” said Nasser Ibrahim Al-Hajri, a tenth grader. “We don’t get to see such events in the Kingdom. My parents brought me from Ri-yadh to take part in this marathon. I knew I wouldn’t win but then winning was not why I was taking part in it. I wanted to ex-perience the fun. And I did. I made many friends as well.”

Thursday’s weather conditions were in sharp contrast to those on Wednesday. “It was humid and unbearable yesterday. There was no breeze and we were praying for good weather today and Alhamdullilah our prayers were answered,” said one of the organizers.

The event was open to all nationalities. A fee of SR50 was all that was needed to become the organization’s member and take part in the charity run. Included in the membership fee was a white T-shirt that ev-

According to the organizers, the response was overwhelming. “We will have the complete statistics in the next three or four days. All the details are yet to be compiled. We will then have the complete picture as to how many people took part in each cat-egory,” said Al-Gahtani.

The charity run was divided into six catego-ries, from 15 and below, to 70 and aboveAs the sun went down, winners in the dif-ferent categories received prizes and tro-phies from two prominent guests of honor — Khaled Al-Sultan, rector of the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, and Alkhobar Gov. must not be an excuse for shifting to the boss the burden of formulating the action. The completed staff work theory may result in more work for the staff member but it results in more freedom for the boss. This is as it should be. Further, it accomplishes two things:

The boss is protected from half-baked ideas, voluminous memos, and immature oral pre-sentations.

The staff member who has a real idea to sell is enabled more readily to find a market.

When you have finished your completed staff work the final test is this:

If you were the boss would you be willing to sign the paper you have prepared, and stake your professional reputation on its be-ing right?

If the answer is no, take it back and work it over, because it is not yet completed staff work.
