H appy New Year and welcome back. We want to thank our stu-dents and staff for making 2017 an awesome year, and we look forward to a produc ve and fun 2018.
Spirit week culminated with our first evening dance in a decade. Over one hundred students a ended and had a great me. Thank you to our parent and teacher volunteers for making this possible. Volleyball and football have now concluded, and basketball and curling are under way. Check out the game schedules on our website and come out and support our teams. We have selected the cast for this year’s produc on of URINETOWN. Con-gratula ons to all that are involved, we are looking forward to an amazing musical. The band and choir program have been extremely busy and ac-ve (as always), some highlights were singing Christmas carols at Cancer-
Care Manitoba, and an awesome Christmas Concert on December 7th. It is not too late to register for our 2019 trip to Europe. Check out the ar -cle in this newsle er or browse www.explorica.ca/Borelli-7511 to sign-up. We have confirmed the dates for our Grade 8 Open House and for our Grade 9-11 Info Night. This is an opportunity to showcase our school to our incoming new students and parents, provide an overview of pro-grams, extra-curricular opportuni es and provide informa on about post-secondary requirements and op ons. A reminder to students and parents that exams are approaching quickly. School based exams begin on January 29th. The complete schedule is in-cluded in this newsle er, and can also be found on our website. Grade 12 Provincial Exams English is from January 8-11 and Mathema cs is from January 24-25.
Hope to see you all soon.
G ree ngs from Mr. Morris’ grade 9 science class! As the semester comes to an end we can reflect on all the learning that has taken place in our class. We started
our year learning about the periodic table and what ma er ac-tually is, electrons, protons and neutrons! We looked at ma er in many different states and how the atoms themselves can in-
teract with others to form compounds and other types of substances!
We then transferred over to exploring reproduc on and gene cs. The majori-ty of our focus was on humans but we ended up caring and growing plants for 5 weeks to see how asexual reproduc on works in the agricultural world!
One of the topics that was really out of this world was learning about our solar sys-tem and the universe. We discussed and explored a lot of ideas such as if hu-mans could really survive on Mars (à la Ma Damon in The Mar an) and how retrograde mo on works. We ended up taking over the band room one class so we could see what the orbit of Mars looks like from Earth!
The last area we were able to ex-
plore was electricity. A lot of good
zaps were had with the Van der
Graaf generator and we ex-
plored how different material interacted by trans-
ferring electrons from one object to another. We
even got to build our own electrosta c device to
shock our friends with, an electrophorus!

Jazz Choir @ Cancer Care
W hen I was in at my last appoint-
ment at CancerCare, I asked the
events coordinator if she would
like our jazz choir to sing a few songs at their
Children’s Christmas Party. She leapt at the
idea, so I brought the news to Mrs. Betz, who
was thrilled with this performance opportuni-
ty. So on December 15, the CSNC Jazz Choir
got the opportunity to do something truly spe-
cial. We first went to the outpa ent children’s
clinic on the 3rd floor of the CancerCare build-
ing at Health Sciences Centre. We performed for the kids there, many of whom were undergoing
treatment and were very thankful and entertained. We then performed on the second floor
bridges overlooking the main atrium. It was a truly moving experience as the sound echoed
around the atrium. We then presented the CancerCare Manitoba Founda on with a $500 dona-
on on behalf of the school. The jazz choir and I would like to thank the CSNC staff and students
for their generosity.
This was a great experience for me personally, as well as for the whole group. I am very glad that
we got the chance to do this and I hope the jazz choir will get the chance to do this again.
