PRESIDENT’S MESSAGESteve Hurst – Steve E. Hurst Construction

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! I hope you and your family had a wonderful Christmas together. Watching the snow fall added to the excitement of the day. Winston-Salem has not had a white Christmas since 1947. Like the song says, our dreams came true!

I am excited to start the year as your new president. I appreciate all the time and effort Rich has invested as president during the 2010 year. A new year is a new beginning, resolutions are made and people are ready for a fresh start. I have personal goals for this year but I also envision great things in the future for HBAWS.

First, I want each member of HBAWS to know they are appreciated and that they are a vital part of our organization. We are only as strong as the members that make up our HBAWS. For example, in a business, employees need to know that they are an integral part of the company. Their input is important in the growth and success of the business.

From a simple “thank you” to a pat on the back, recognition lifts the spirits. Productivity is increased and your employees are happy. I want to take some time this year to let our fellow members know how much we appreciate them.

Secondly, I would like to see a greater participation from our members. HBAWS is a great way to meet local builders and associates. Find a way you can plug in! Seek out someone you don’t know and introduce yourself at a monthly meeting. Perhaps you don’t feels comfortable in large social gatherings but you can make a difference by joining a committee and sharing your thoughts and opinions. You can schedule a time to showcase your product at a monthly meeting or you can keep up to date on events by reading our monthly newsletter. The greater the participation, the stronger our organization will be. If everyone brings their own suggestions to the group, we will have a vast diversity of ideas to build on. Who knows what the possibilities will hold?

Finally, take time each day to invest in your business. Your business is a reflection of you, make yourself shine! Don’t let the economy drag you down. You have figured out a way to remain in business through the down turn. Set goals for your business and continue working hard to attain them. Dig your heels in deep and be part of the solution. I am excited about the possibilities the new year holds for all the members of Home Builders Association of Winston-Salem. This December, Winston-Salem broke a 63-year-old record with a white Christmas! Let’s make this a record-breaking year in all areas!

H O M E B U I L D E R S P A R T N E R S W I T HBOB TIMBERLAKE FOR PARADE OF HOMES ARTIST SERIES!Home Builders Association of Winston-Salem is pleased to announce the Inaugaral Parade of Homes Artist Series featuring the artwork of North Carolina’s own, Bob Timberlake.

Bob Timberlake, Inc. has partnered with Home Builders to provide artwork for promotion and marketing of both the Spring and Fall Parades for 2011. Mr. Timberlake’s art will be the first in a series of North Carolina artists featured on the cover of our Parade Tabloid in the Winston-Salem Journal.

In addition to providing artwork for the cover design, poster, etc., Mr. Timberlake has offered a framed print to be sold during the Parade of Homes with funds benefiting our preferred charity, Habitat for Humanity of Forsyth County.

Throughout his career, Bob Timberlake’s work has been featured in scores of magazines and newspapers including The Atlanta Journal and Constitution

Magazine, Art Voices/South, Midwest Art, Southwest Art, Today’s Art, Art World News, Southern Living, Southern Accents, Audubon, Acquire, Forests, N.C. Business, Our State, Reader’s Digest (only the second time an artist was featured in that publication), and almost all of the “shelter” magazines. Timberlake has released seven books: The Bob Timberlake Collection (with text by Charles Kuralt) in 1977, The World of Bob Timberlake in 1979, Somewhere in Time in 1989, Roots and Reflections in 1998, an autobiography, Partial to Home: A Memoir of the Heart in 1999 and a cookbook, The Seasonal Palette in 2000. The most recent publication, Bob Timberlake, Recipes from Home, was released in the fall of 2004.

In 1997, Timberlake introduced a collection of 24 home plans and licensed structural and fashion building components in order to create complete Bob Timberlake homes, built and furnished with Bob Timberlake products. The first Bob Timberlake show home was built in High Point, NC in 1997. Since then, additional show homes have been built in North Carolina, Virginia, Georgia and Utah. Bob Timberlake home plans are currently available through Southern Living®. Many Lodges, Hotels, and Inns have been furnished and decorated with the “Timberlake” style.

Bob Timberlake has been and is involved with many art and environmental issues and boards. He has raised funds for so many worthwhile projects from County & Volunteer Fire Departments to our N.C. Wildlife Habitat Foundation and many others. Bob has used his talents and art to raise many thousands of dollars for the Keep America & N.C. Beautiful and Green, Lions Clubs, Easter Seals, Cystic Fibrosis, Boy Scouts of America, Duke Cancer Research and Children’s Hospitals, Save The Hatteras Lighthouse, Salvation Army, and too many local and distinct worthwhile projects to list.

HBAWS believes this addition to the Parade of Homes will generate excitement for our event, while highlighting one of North Carolina’s best!

Our January meeting, we will have the owners of ThriftyU coming in to help us learn more about social media. I hope everyone in the Remodelors Council and HBA had a fabulous holiday season to close out 2010, and is as excited about 2011 that I am.

GOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS REPORTNancy Gould - Joint Governmental Affairs Director

WHAT’S IN STORE FOR 2011?Joint Governmental Affairs has prepared the quick list below to keep you abreast of potential new local regulatory changes happening now, as well as some that may be coming down the tubes in early 2011:

TREE ORDINANCES. Both Lewisville and Clemmons are getting closer to publishing draft ordinances that will soon be available for public review and comment. We appreciate Home Builder,

Rich Archor, serving as a volunteer on the Clemmons Tree Ordinance Committee. Jonathan Lee, a Lewisville Home Builder has agreed to represent us once a draft ordinance is available there. We are hoping that both towns will adopt ordinances similar to Winston-Salem’s which was supported by the Sierra Club, Neighborhood Alliance, Home Builders Association of W-S and W-S Regional Association of REALTORS®

W-S NONRESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS AND STUCTURES CODE. Several members of the WSRAR REALTOR’S COMMERICAL ALLIANCE have worked hard during the past year, following the various revisions to this important potential new set of regulations. Much of our time has been spent encouraging the City Council to go ahead and adopt an ordinance that will result in the improvement or removal of abandoned, derelict and unsafe nonresidential building throughout Winston-Salem. The W-S CD/H/GG Committee recently voted to do that and is sending the ordinance forward for a public hearing before the entire Council on January 18, 2011.

LEWISVILLE THINKING ABOUT MAKING RURAL OVERLAY ORDINANCE MORE RESTRICTIVE. A year or two ago, the Town Of Lewisville adopted its Rural Overlay Zoning District that applies to all tracts of land over 30 acres, located within the Lewisville Town Limits and within LEGACY Growth Management Area 5 (the Rural Growth Management Area.) This overlay district increased the minimum residential lot size from approx. 1 acre to 3 acres and prohibits Planned Residential Developments (cluster subdivisions.) Some council members think another look should be taken at the Rural Overlay District again to see if changes should be made, including reducing the 30 acre threshold so more tracts of land would be restricted in the number of new lots might be created in the future.

POTENTIAL BIG ISSUE – RUCO. Are more regulations the best way to solve every problem? Lots of people seem to think so, without taking the time to look at other alternatives. Both Home Builders and REALTORS® adhere to national association principals that include the quality of life principal of “Building Better Communities Sensibly, “part of which is “ensuring a high quality of life at reasonable costs.” RUCO (Residential Unit Certificate of Occupancy or Rental Ordinance) has proven in other communities to not work or be reasonable in improving the rental unit housing stock. During 2011 we hope to work with the City of Winston-Salem to find better ways of improving rental housing that will be more effective and less costly to citizens as well as property owners than adding on another set of regulations.

To stay informed about these and other governmental issues that impact real estate and building, open the UPDATE Govt. Affairs Newsletter on the WSRAR and HBAWS websites. To work with our Department, the Joint Legislative Committee and fellow members on these or other local governmental issues, just give us a call or drop us an email: [email protected] or 336-659-5526.

Three Potential Advantages of a Roth IRAMany may not understand what a Roth IRA is, and what some of the benefits of a Roth IRA are. But there are three advantages that a Roth IRA can offer if your estate value is under the Applicable Exclusion Amount and if one of your planning goals is to leave as much money as possible to your heirs.

Defining The Roth IRASimply stated, the Roth IRA is an IRA that individuals make contributions to on an after tax basis (contributions to a traditional IRA are generally made with pre-tax money). When qualified withdrawals are taken from a Roth IRA1, they are totally free from federal income tax (state income tax treatment may vary depending upon your state of residence).

Benefits of a Roth IRA - There are three.1.) Passing income tax-free money to an heir. The estate planning benefits begin with the Roth IRA’s ability to pass money to a beneficiary income tax-free on qualified distributions at your death, provided the Roth IRA satisfies a five-year holding period.2.) The Roth IRA avoids forced depletion at old age. Due to minimum distribution requirements (forced distributions at age 70 ½), many traditional IRAs may be substantially depleted if their owners live into their late 80s or beyond. Since a Roth IRA faces no such requirements, it can continue to benefit from tax deferral each year with no requirement to take distributions.3.) Contributions may continue through any age. Provided eligibility requirements are met and that you have compensation (as defined by the Internal Revenue Code).

With the Roth IRA, you may have the opportunity to save more money for your heirs than with a traditional IRA, especially if you live a long time. Do remember that IRA money, including money in a Roth IRA, passed to heirs will be included in your gross estate for federal estate tax purposes.

Meet with your tax advisor and financial professional to discuss your personal situation and how a Roth IRA strategy may help you to meet your goals.

Tax-Free Roth IRA withdrawals of earnings permitted five years after first contribution creating account. Once the five year requirement is met, distributions will be free from federal income taxes if taken: (1) after age 59 1/2; (2) on account of disability or death; or (3) to pay up to $10,000 of the expenses of purchasing a first home.

Withdrawals of earnings made earlier than five years after the first Roth IRA account contribution, will be generally subject to a 10% IRS penalty and taxed at ordinary income tax rates. For conversions involving annuity contracts, the taxable amount may be based on the fair market value of the contract, which may be more than the account value and may result in the taxable amount being more than you would otherwise expect.

The information contained in this document is not intended to (and cannot) be used by anyone to avoid IRS penalties. This document supports the promotion and marketing of Roth IRAs. You should seek advice based on your particular circumstances from an independent tax advisor.

Murray Supply Company Supports The Wounded Warrior Project on Veterans Day

Murray Supply Company’s, MRO-maintenance, repair and operations division partnered with The Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) and ran a promotion on Veteran’s Day, November 11, 2010. Murray Supply Company honored the men and women that serve our country by donating $2,000.00 to The Wounded Warrior Project on Veteran’s Day.

The Wounded Warrior Project provides services and programs to troops that have been injured in recent conflicts, many of them suffering from traumatic brain injuries, amputations and severe burns.

The WWP began when several veterans and friends, moved by stories of the first wounded service members returning from Afghanistan and Iraq, took action to help others in need. This program began as a service to provide items to comfort wounded soldiers and it has grown into a complete rehabilitative effort. Thousands of wounded warriors and caregivers receive support each year through WWP programs designed to nurture the mind, body and encourage economic impact. The WWP is wholly committed to aiding wounded heros and easing not only their initial transition to civilian life, but throughout their entire lives through combat stress recovery program, policy and government affairs, family support, benefits services, physical health and rehabilitation and multiple other programs. HBA RESTROOM RENOVATEDWe didn’t even have to ask Santa for a new guest restroom as some of our members took on the project themselves. Thank you Jennifer Sammons, now with Allen Tate Realtors, for pulling together the idea and vision to update our office and guest restrooms. The new modern look is a major change from the vintage colors and fixtures we had.

The new tile floor and tile wainscot wall in black and white tiles of various sizes and bands from Walkabout Tile, had a major part of the new look. BIMCO Plumbing Supply provided the new modern plumbing fixtures along with the polished chrome accessories help make the transition a reality. PF Plumbing did the installation and the finishing touches provided by Steve McSwain, Maplestone Construction to complete the new look.

All these changes took place during the last 2 weeks of December so many will think that Santa really did visit our office over the holiday!
