2012 gateway “souper” bowl tailgate — sunday, february 5

The month of January means the NFL Playoffs are in full swing, with the Super Bowl just around the corner in early February. Gateway is excited about hosting our 3rd annual Gateway “Souper” Bowl Tailgate on Sunday, February 5. On Super Bowl Sunday, dress out in your favorite team jersey and come ready for a fantastic time at the Gateway “Souper” Bowl Tailgate. Immediately following the second service, we will head outside for food, fellowship, fight songs, and a little football, including a punt, pass, and kick competition. Other activities will include the Great Chili Cook-Off, a tailgate lunch, a Football Trivia contest, and a Guess-timation contest.

Again this year, we are asking for canned soup donations that will help replenish the empty shelves at the Circle of Concern food pantry in Valley Park. “Mr. Touchdown” will make his annual appearance to weigh the total amount of canned soup donations. Let us see if we can surpass last year’s total of 380+ pounds of food! For the tailgate lunch, Gateway will provide the dogs, brats, and drinks — you bring the snacks and a friend! This is a perfect opportunity to bring lost people into God’s family! We will pack it up by 2:30 pm so you can go watch the Super Bowl at home — it will be a great time! Information concerning sign-up sheets for volunteers will be announced during church services throughout January.

We all have “stuff” in our lives that tends to “define” us. We are apathetic, greedy, stuck on ourselves, stressed out… you name it… and that is the “me” that we all too often “settle for.” But what if we had a chance to be made “new”-- into the person we hope to be? Into the person God wants us to be? What would that person look like?

You want to be more devoted to God. You want to be more focused. You want to be free. You want your life to mean something. You want

to tell others about Jesus. Whatever it is...a new start is waiting for you through Christ who makes all things new. Join us this January for a brand new beginning.

Page 2: january sermon series: he makes all things new

He who was seated on the throne said, "I am making everything new!" Revelation 21:5

Ah, you made it. You navigated though 2011 and survived another Thanksgiving/Christmas season. I hope you drew closer to Christ and to your family. As we move out of 2011, we rejoice in God’s blessings as a church family -- Souper Bowl Sunday, sWerve, Gateway’s 38th Anniversary, Dare You to Move groundbreaking, Mission South Dakota, Baptism Sunday, Fall Kick-off, Mission Shiloh, Mission Mexico, Thanksgiving Potluck, Gateway Give, It’s a Wonderful Life musical, and Christmas services...just to name a few. Not to mention all the new faces and decisions for Christ! God has been good.

But there have been many heartaches, too. While many are looking to build on the blessings of 2011, others are prayerfully looking forward to a new year and a new start.

You will be encouraged to know that God specializes in “making everything new”. Wow, what a welcome truth for a worn-out soul. A new start or a new you is exactly what you need. There may be a holy discontent about the gap between you and God, you and your spouse, or you and...everybody. God wants to help with that and each year He gives us a “new” start if we are open to it. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland. Isaiah 43:19

Along with all of our leaders, I am praying for you. I am praying for your strength, conviction, and courage as we enter the New Year. There will be great blessings, coupled with many heartaches. Through it all, may the Lord bring to fruition His promise to do something...new.

welcome new baby Ben and Addie Bond are the proud parents of a brand-new baby girl! Annabelle Catherine Bond was born at 3:14 am on Sunday, December 4, weighing in at 5 lb 15 oz and 20” long. Annabelle joins big brother, Channing. Welcome, little Annabelle!

By mid-January, a hearty bowl of soup or chili, a little salad, and a "healthy" serving of dessert just might sound good. So, Young at Heart is inviting men and women who are 55+ to spend some time at the church on Wednesday, January 18, for a day of table games (sorry, no Twister). A variety of games will be available; chili and drinks will be provided; and visiting will be a by-product. Consider joining this fun group around 10:00 am. Please bring soup, salad, or dessert to add to the carry-in lunch to be served around 12 noon. Some time away from the house (should we be experiencing cabin fever) will be good for all of us.

Dear Gateway Family, Thank you for the gift of a Peace lily, all the food, notes, cards, visits, and support. My son Brian grew up at Gateway and I know GCC had a lot to do with making him the man of God that he was. He will be missed and I am truly blessed to be a part of the GCC family.

Baptized: Clark Flores

“For God so loved the world that He gave He gave His one and only Son, that whoever BELIEVES in him will not perish, but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

“REPENT, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord…”(Acts 3:19)

“If you CONFESS with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, then you will be saved.“ (Romans 10:9)

“Repent and BE BAPTIZED, everyone of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.” (Acts 2:38)

What on earth am I here for? That’s a question we’ve all asked ourselves at one time. The answer is to worship God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. He created you and longs to have a relationship with you. God made a way for us to find forgiveness, peace and meaning through His Son, Jesus Christ. We will never find or fulfill our purpose in this life until we let Jesus rescue us from our sin and become the leader of our life. So how do we do that?

Page 5: january sermon series: he makes all things new

There will be four grants available this year ($300 each) for those planning on taking an independent or long-term mission trip. There are two separate deadlines: March 15 for trips heading out in the summer/fall and September 15 for trips heading out in the winter/spring.

A long-term mission trip is defined as a trip taken by an individual or small group, with an organization other than Gateway Christian Church, for longer than 10 days. It is considered by the World Impact team to be a “Mission Field Apprenticeship” and, as such, will include standards held by current and future missionaries.

If you plan to take a long-term mission trip, email or call one of the following World Impact team members and ask for an application. Pam Erker email: [email protected] phone: 636-349-2271 Carrie Imhoff email: [email protected] phone: 636-529-0638

The application will ask you to describe your trip, destination, the organization you are going with, activities in which you will be involved, and what kind of support you are seeking, etc. You will then meet with the team to further clarify any questions team members may still have.

January 1 – Canned goods (i.e. soup, meat, vegetables, fruit) January 8 – Toiletries (for men, women, and children) January 15 – Dry Goods (i.e. spaghetti, rice, flour, etc.) January 22 – Paper Goods (i.e. paper towels, toilet paper, Ziploc bags) January 29 – Baby Supplies (i.e. diapers, wet wipes, baby food, etc.)

We have several Gateway families in need at the moment so we need to keep the shelves stocked. Thank you!

2012 children’ s events

Thirty or so middle and high school students volunteered to help families by working at the Kids’ Christmas Party last month. The 72 kids who attended got to enjoy a command performance by SHINE, have lunch, play games, make a Christmas gift, and prayerfully prepare 72 sack lunches and cards for the homeless! (See picture for some of these bags.) This annual event would not be possible without these great teens. I am very proud of the job they did and very thankful for their help. Great work!

january 2012 As I type this, I cannot believe that 2011 is over!! This last year has been nothing less than amazing for the students at Gateway. We have gone on our first Collide Student Ministry mission trip since I have been at Gateway. We did our first stay-at-home retreat in March. We helped kids and people all over the world in the name of Jesus Christ through our Collide Out series. But here is the best part……God is just beginning in the lives of these teens! 2012 is shaping up to be a great year, and it is only in the planning stages! Here are the sermon series we will be diving into during Collide Live:

In January we are going to be looking at some Kings from the Old Testament and the prophets who dealt with them: Ahab and Elijah, Hezekiah and Isaiah, Jehoshaphat and how he searched for a prophet. You do not want to miss our series and how we like to kick it Old School. During the month of February we are looking at secrets that we all have. Secrets that hurt others, ourselves, and how all of them ultimately hurt our relationship with God. This is one month that is going to be very heavy and life-impacting.

March is our last Collide Out of the school year. This is the time that we take what we experience here—the Love, Joy, Compassion, and Grace of Jesus—and push it out into the city, state, country, and world. Come on out to see who the Collide students will impact with Christ’s Love.

For April we are jumping back into the New Testament by looking at the eleven faithful disciples of Christ. Not each one specifically, but how they conquered the world for Christ. They all had a huge impact on the church today and ultimately on the entire world.

We are starting to recruit people for Host Home duties in March. If you are interested in helping out the student ministry with our Spring Purity Retreat by having a bunch of students sleeping in your house for a weekend, please let me know. It was a great experience last year and we are looking forward to it again this spring. The dates for the purity retreat are Friday-Saturday, March 9-10. Just contact me at Gateway.

~ Josh

It has been a huge blessing to be a part of the Collide Student Ministry in 2011! Looking back at all that we have done, I cannot help but smile when I think about how alive God is in the students at Gateway. The heart that this group has for missions is incredible! We have spent a total of 3 whole months in the past year supporting different mission organizations, not to mention the high schoolers’ journey to South Dakota to build up the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, both physically and spiritually. I love it that even in the hearts of pre-teens and teens, Matthew 28:19 is taken so seriously! My personal walk with Christ has been greatly strengthened by all of the amazing friendships I have formed through Collide, as well as through the continual support I receive for the ministry God has placed on my heart. I cannot wait for all that Collide will accomplish in 2012, and my prayer is that we will continue to live out 1 Timothy 4:12: Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in life, in love, in speech, in faith, and in purity. Finally, a huge THANK YOU to the entire Gateway family for supporting Collide this year!

Blessings, Katie Huey
