Pursue a Good Work We sometimes forget that we are all part of a big family. Like the other “branches” of the Masonic family tree, known by many as “appendant bodies,” Scottish Rite, like the branch of any living tree, is supposed to extend the reach of the tree. That is, the “other bodies” are to grow upward and/or outward from the tree’s trunk, yet remain a part of it. As I reflect back over the last year, I recall fondly the times that I represented Scottish Rite at meetings of “our other branches.” Perhaps that is because I enjoy family reunions so much. The concluding months in our calendar year offer many opportunities to join with family members, whether around a Thanksgiving meal or a religious celebration. On those occasions, when I look at my relatives, I can immediately see both similarities and differences. When I look at the various branches of Freemasonry, I can also see similarities and differences. However, some things remain clear. In our Masonic Family, we all share a belief in a Supreme Being. Perhaps more importantly, we know that in order to truly believe in God, we must, as the 16th Degree in Scottish Rite teaches, “pursue a good work.” You see, as we begin a New Year, we can say there is a God, but unless we do something about that belief by taking care of a few of our fellow creatures on this Earth, then we are a pretty lazy family. As part of the Masonic Family, let us therefore renew our efforts, whether it is to help children speak, to comfort the aged, provide scholarships to tomorrow’s leaders, heal the crippled and burned, provide research into Alzheimer’s or diabetes, or any of the many other worthwhile Masonic Charities. After all, by caring for others, we truly show our God how much we care for Him. That realization is one of the sacred bonds that ties together this Family of Freemasonry. Fraternally, James D. Cole, 33° Grand Treasurer General and S.G.I.G. in Virginia

Scottish Rite Workshop Approaching!!! March 22, 2008 is a date you will want to mark on your calendars. Starting with coffee and rolls at 8:30 AM, the Valley of Richmond will again be hosting the Scottish Rite Conference’s Spring Workshop. You will not want to miss the fellowship and educational value of this important meeting in the life of the Scottish Rite Confer-ence, your Valley, and Freemasonry as a whole. Following the opening of the meeting at 9:30 AM by the Conference President, Illustrious Robert W. “Bob” Carpenter, Jr., 33° IGH, we will sit back and enjoy an interesting morning filled with education about our Craft. Each of the Con-ference Officers will make their usual introduc-tions, followed by Illustrious James Dean Cole, 33°, SGIG, introducing the Heads of the Appen-dant Bodies and the Grand Master of Masons in Virginia, Illustrious and Most Worshipful Edmund Cohen, 33° IGH. Most Worshipful Brother Cohen will bring us a timely message for us all to take home. Illustrious Leonard A. Rowe, 33° IGH, President of the Scottish Rite Foundation, will bring us up to date on the activities and condition of the Founda-tion. Brother Matthew T. Szramoski, KCCH, will bring us a report on the activities of the Supreme Council in the area of fundraising. Our featured speaker for the morning will be Illustrious Dean Alban, 33° IGH, from Washington, D.C., who will bring us a timely message filled with useful tidbits on "Communication". As a fitting conclusion, Illustrious Brother Cole will bring us up-to-date on the State of the Orient and where we are headed during the upcoming months. Closing with lunch, we will send everyone home re-energized and eager to advance Scottish Rite Freemasonry in the Orient of Virginia. Fraternally,

Bob Carpenter Ill. Robert W. Carpenter, Jr. Conference President

Greetings from Alexandria We are very proud to say that the No. 1 Mason in the Commonwealth of Virginia is also a staunch member of the Valley of Alexandria – Most Worshipful Edmund Cohen, 33° IGH. While he will be busy in his role as Grand Master, he has already shown that he will be with us as his schedule permits. He was present at our open installation of officers on January 19, and briefly addressed the assemblage. The installation was attended by 185 Brethren, ladies, and guests. The entire ceremony was presented in an excellent manner, unsurprisingly, by Illustrious Walter S. Downs, GC. Also at that installation, the three Thirty-thirds and eight KCCHs who received their honors in 2007 were again recognized and “officially” capped by their wives or other good friends. The two Scottish Rite Clubs, after a one or two months’ hiatus, began holding their monthly dinner/meetings in January. We cannot over-emphasize the value of these clubs in promoting the Scottish Rite and in adding participation in Valley meetings, reunions, and special events. In March, we will observe the ceremony of Remembrance and Light, and pay tribute to the 74 Knights Rose Croix whose deaths were reported throughout the year of 2007. Among those deaths were four 33° Inspectors General Honorary who had given so much of themselves in rendering services that benefited the Scottish Rite and this Valley in particular. We are looking forward to a group of 25 to 30 members to attend the statewide, annual Spring Workshop in Richmond on March 22. The tentative agenda offers some very interesting subjects that should be helpful to all Valleys. Also in March, four of our members will be attending the Supreme Council Leadership Conference in Birmingham, Alabama. One of these four is a young Scottish Rite Mason who has been designated a “Fellow” and will be included in special meetings with Grand Commander Seale. Currently, petitions for the Spring Class are being received, and we hope for a sizable Class in April.

Greetings from Danville

In January, the election of officers for the different bodies for 2008 was handled with dispatch by Illustrious William A. Wells, 33° IGH. The officers were then duly installed by Illustrious R. Lee Wayland, Jr., 33° IGH. Afterwards, everyone enjoyed refreshments in the dining hall. In February and March, we will be having a Valentine party and fundraising dinner for the Scottish Rite Foundation. Our Venerable Master, Brother Ted Keith Rice, 32°, will be our representative in Birmingham in February. It is with sadness, we note our Venerable Master in 2007, Brother Robert G. Fisher, 32° KCCH, transitioned to the celestial lodge in October after a long, difficult, but courageous battle with cancer. Right Worshipful Brother Fisher was invested with the Rank and Honor of KCCH at his home in the presence of his family and many of the Valley of Danville Brethren in September. He was able to muster enough strength to preside over the Danville Lodge of Perfection one last time in October before his death later that month. He was active in his church, passionate about Ford Model A's, a Master Gardener, and passionate about Freemasonry. Brother Bob put together the Rite Care Fundraising Campaign the Valley of Danville sponsored in 2007. The Valley of Danville mourns the loss of his life. .

PROJECT TALKK = SUCCESS

This program called PROJECT TALKK, “Teaches Age Appropriate Language Skills to Kids through Kits.” The kits are designed and developed by a speech pathologist in the Lynchburg school system and assembled by volunteers from the Scottish Rite Valley. The purpose of the kit is to: 1. Improve the language skills of preschool aged children 2. Prepare children for success through the development of

language skills 3. Provide parents an opportunity to learn how to provide lan-

guage skills based instruction through typical preschool play and structured parent/child interactions

4. Increase the use of structured language-based activities in public and private daycare centers

5. Identify children who have or may be at risk for language delays, disabilities which call for speech therapy (focus: early identification of speech and language delays)

6.Increase parents’ and daycare providers’ awareness of typical speech/language development

After the kits are assembled and distributed to local day-care centers, the daycare directors are trained to use the kits and a monitoring system is set-up to evaluate the use. We have over 180 kits in 8 daycare centers, the Hutcherson Early Learning Center, and a traveling library called Gus the Bus, serving over 500 children in 4 communities. Now 5 more daycare centers have asked to participate in project TALKK. The program is very well received. The response from the teachers and parents that have used the kits is very gratifying and has brought a focal point into the lodge. Lodge of Perfection

Greetings from Newport News!

The Valley of Newport News has just finished a major improvement project to our main and secondary entrances. Illustrious and Most Wor-shipful William M. Johnson, IGH, prior to his death, expressed a desire to improve the entrances to our building. Illustrious Lon L. Weber, IGH, was asked to head up a committee to raise the funds, plan the project, and follow through with the construction. A fundraising effort was begun with a request for donations for funding the project. One of our members, who is an architect, Brother Bill Black, 32º, studied the building drawings and designed our new entrances. The Board of Trus-tees approved the design and contractors were selected and the project began. The members of the Valley have contributed over $33,000 to see “Bill’s” dream come to fruition. We have finished the entrance improvement project and are very proud of the results. We have installed glass entrances, finished the inside foyers, installed chair rails, lighting, indoor/outdoor carpeting, and a new entrance door to our main entrance. We also have installed a canopy over the main entrance. Now, both entrances are enclosed, fin-ished, painted, carpeted, and ready to be decorated. We would like to thank all the members of the Valley who donated to this project. We would like to thank several of our members who gave of their time and energy in making this project a success: Illustri-ous Jim Lassiter, IGH; Illustrious and Most Worshipful Frank Perdue, IGH; Brother Jim Gillikin, KCCH; Brother Vic Vogelsang, 32º; and Brother Bill Black, 32º. We know that “Bill” was with us, he would be very pleased. As our “new year” begins after our February stated meeting, when we will elect and install our new officers, we would like to take this time to thank our leaders for the past year’s hard work and dedication (see the tableau to the left for their names). We had a total of twenty-six new Masters of the Royal Secret last year and are hoping for better results this year. We would like to thank all the Degree Masters for their work in planning, practicing, and presenting our Degrees. We would like to send our love and prayers to all of the widows of our departed Brethren, who have gone before us to the Celestial Lodge Above. Our prayers also go out to Illustrious Gerald E. Burks, IGH, our Treasurer, and his wife, Terry. Brother Jerry has been in the hospi-tal with complications from cancer and respiratory problems; but due to a situation these caused with poor circulation; he had to have his left foot amputated. Please remember Jerry and his wife in your prayers as long with those of our widows.

Greetings from Norfolk

2008 promises to be a busy and exciting time in the Val-ley o Norfolk. The Norfolk Scottish Rite Ladies have planned dinner before each meeting (except summer meetings). The fellowship with the Brethren and ladies should not be missed! At our January Stated, Commandery members, including the Grand Commander and Grand Captain General (who are both members of our Valley) presented a program on the Flag. Interesting programs are being arranged for each of our stated meetings by the Regalia Committee. Our Valley workshop will be held on Saturday, March 15, 2008 with breakfast served at 7:30am and events commencing thereafter. We will be focusing on degree ritual and Lodge of Perfection ritual. This is an excellent opportunity for Brethren to fellowship and participate in the work in a very relaxed en-vironment. The following Saturday, March 22nd, we will be joining with our Scottish Rite Brethren from around the state and sup-porting Illustrious Brother Carpenter and the Brethren of the Valley of Richmond at the Workshop in Richmond. The Norfolk Valley has always taken pride in the close relationship we enjoy with the “Blue Lodges” in Tidewater. Most Valley members are extremely active in their Lodges and we constantly encourage their participation in both venues. Valley of Norfolk Brethren have already started the annual competition to see which group (“white hats,” “red hats,” or “black hats”) will have the largest amount contributed for hole sponsorship for the Ian M. Shipley, Jr. Memorial Golf Tourna-ment to be held on April 16, 2008. At our stated on April 17th, we will hold our annual Remembrance and Renewal Cere-mony. On April 26, 2008, we will honor Illustrious Goodwin Burnett Spencer at our Spring Reunion. Brother Spencer was a good man, a great Mason, a revered member of our Valley, and very deserving of this honor. We have a very busy year planned and our brethren are looking forward to the many activities scheduled. Please visit with us whenever your schedule permits!

Brother Gary’s comments were: “The Sublime Degree is not intended to be a finished lesson; but rather a direc-tional sign on the highway of life wherein man learns to find a series of interpretations, to have his faculties awakened to the vistas of sight, sound, and ideas to which he can constantly return for new meanings and fresh understanding.”

Greetings from Roanoke

In December our building was used again as a drop-off, wrapping, and distribution point for “Be a Santa to a Senior.” The national group which provides Christmas gifts to underprivileged, or lonely senior citizens, distributed over 146,000 gifts in 2007. Recipients’ names are gleaned from lists provided by the LOA and local Social Services departments. Gifts were collected at Senior Santa Trees prominently located around the Valley. Some of them arrived at our Temple by U-Haul trailer. Volunteers used our facilities for three weeks in all and processed an impressive1800 gifts for distribution in the Roanoke area. Significantly, that number was up 63% from last year’s 1100 total. We are confident that the comfort and convenience of our “Double Eagle North Pole Distribution Center” helped make that increase possible. We look forward to this project as a long-term service we can offer the community. On Saturday morning, May 3, 2008, the Valleys of Lynchburg and Danville will meet with us for a joint Spring Reunion. The Reunion will be in honor of Illustrious James Stanley Johnson. Roanoke is proud to host this event which is typical of the close Fraternal relationship these Valleys enjoy. We are also glad to be able to do this in co-operation with Kazim Temple. Their Cold-sands ceremonial and reception for all new members will take place later that day. Potentate Glenn Perry is an active and contributing Scottish Rite member. Special recognition should also go to the Valley of Danville for its generous monetary contribution to the Summer Speech and Language Clinic at Radford University. Their help, added to Roanoke’s efforts, greatly enhances the traditional donation of books and materials to that clinic.
