Howdy

I hope everyone has had a great start to 2010 and are keeping up with their New Years resolutions… :0)! For those of you that are still digging yourself out of the snow, I hope that the snow storms at least slow down a bit…but we all know that our dogs LOVE to romp in the snow that seems to never stop falling (in some places)!!

Good luck to everyone and their 4-legged babies this year in all you do. Some of you are shooting for the top ten, some for more obedience, rally, or agility titles, some wanting more success in dog sports as well and those of you who are hoping for their 4-legged children to just stay as sweet, loving, cuddly, unique and energetic that we enjoyed from them last year!

Everyone stay warm…Spring is just around the corner :0)

What a guy - Quest finally got his AKC Excellent Jumpers Title and he really did it in style!

1st place - clean run - Score 100. He ran 165 yards - 19 obstacles in 38.47 seconds. (The standard course time is 49 seconds.) Not bad for a 96 lb. Shepherd.

That happened on Friday, and I moved him up to Excellent B (the top class in AKC). So on Saturday he ran in that class and it did not phase him.He scored another 100% clean run by running 151 yards in 39.57 seconds, earning a 2nd place "Q". (The 1st place dog - a Border Collie was less than 1 second faster.)

I am still smiling. Before our runs, he was laid back as usual, working the crowd in the stands for attention and treats and laying on his back hoping for belly rubs. Someone even suggested that he needed a pep pill if he was going to run. I just said "watch him". He is such a funny clown until I release him - then he flies.

Unfortunately he did not do as well in his Standard runs - but oh well, maybe next time. He only needs one more "Q" in Standard for his Excellent title in that event also. This weekend he decided to play "don't step in the yellow section" He didn't, until the very last run which he ran to perfection until the weave poles when I goofed and accidentally pulled him off. Bad mom! Betty

Big congratulations to Quest and Betty…what a great team the two of you are!!

Rescued at Last! by Cheryl KaelinTheir story began three years ago, Christmas Eve, when a mother picked up two sweet White Shepherd puppies for her two young sons. She had lost her husband to an accident just two months earlier. Her husband’s dream had been to own one of these beautiful dogs. In an attempt to fill the void left by the loss of their father, this well meaning mother got not one but two puppies that Christmas for her sons. These beautiful and smart puppies grew extremely fast until they were 6 months old and very big. With no experience handling this type of dog, the mother and sons did not understand the need to train and give these smart boys something meaningful to do. Now she had not one but two very large and very unruly puppies. The puppies were moved to a fenced area in the backyard but as most WS who are bored do, they learned to create their own excitement. One learned to climb and jump out of the 5 ft enclosure and the other followed by digging out. Not knowing what to do, the mother put them on cables with choker chains to keep them in. Now, understanding the mistakes that she made in an emotionally driven decision to bring home these Christmas Eve puppies, their owner was asking for rescue so that they could have a second chance for the life that they deserved. On December 10th I received a forwarded email from a friend of this family. She stated that their was a family near her that wanted to give up their two White Shepherds because they were overwhelmed trying to care for them. She and I were led to believe the boys were kept in a building on the property. I told her that most rescues that I work with do not have any openings for new dogs but I would go by and get pictures so I could send them around to try to find them a home.I was not prepared for what I found when I got there the following week. What I found brought me to tears. These two sweet boys were standing in mud and their own waste attached to concrete blocks by cables that led to choker chains on their necks. They had minimal shelter with only thin dog houses and a little straw. Their bowls were dirty and cracked. And yet, they were smiling and wagging. Both were barking frantically trying to get my attention and grabbing onto me tightly when I got near enough for them to reach me. It was obvious that they did not deserve to be chained. They just needed trained. I took their pictures and left. Sobbing in the car on the way down the drive because I could not take them with me. I needed help to get them out.

Page 11: January/February 2010 Volume 5 Issue 1unitedwhiteshepherdclub.org › newsletter › 2010 › Jan-Feb10.pdf · January/February 2010 Page 7 Brags! Weight Pull 02/13/10 –Oceanside,

I emailed their photos and story to lots of people and rescues with no answer or replies that they were full and had no place to put any new dogs. So, life for Shadow and Bear continued on as it had for over two years. I visited them frequently over the next month dropping off food and straw, trimming nails, putting blankets in their houses, just giving them hugs and promising them that I would find a way out for them. Finally, in a desperate plea for them, I posted their story to the White Shepherd community. Soon hope came for them. The networking and generosity of the White Shepherd community helped bring enough attention to these chained brothers that little offers of help began coming. Within the next few days, lots of emails and phone calls and then the big break. A rescue commitment came from Echo Dogs White Shepherd Rescue. Someone had offered to foster these boys for rescue! So, lots more emails and phone calls. I frantically started making arrangements to get them out as quickly as possible.A month after first meeting them, December 17th, my son and I picked them up from their home and loaded them into our vehicle. When we got them home, we began cleaning them up. Washing years of dirt that was clumped and clinging to them. Bear's choker was tight and was difficult to remove. He had a raw place on the front of his neck where the metal had dug into his skin. Both of them had black staining in their white fur from having their metal chokers on for years without removal. Both boys allowed us to bathe them with little resistance. We placed new collars on their necks and threw the chokers away. Now clean, they were off to the vet clinic the next morning for shots, neutering and heartworm testing. This was the first veterinary care they had received since they were 6 months old. Next stop, my vet's office for microchips and health certificates. Then to a local boarding kennel until their transport out of Kentucky to their foster mom in New York. The next break for them came when someone from Dogs Deserve Better arranged for a paid commercial transport to get them to New York quickly. So, the day after dropping them for local boarding, I picked them up to transport them to meet the driver for the transport company. Carefully placing identification on their collars so I could be contacted if something happened on their trip to New York, I then loaded them one last time into crates in my vehicle. Before loading, Bear jumped up and grabbed my arm, squeezing tightly and kissing my cheek. He could tell that something big was happening. I am sure that was my bear hug goodbye. Shadow loaded easily into his crate, turning around quickly before I could lock the door, he put his nose on my cheek. As I handed them off to the driver, Shadow turned and kissed me one last time. I stood crying as they drove off because I knew that they would finally have that second chance at the life they truly deserve. Thanks to the concern, generosity, and networking of you, Shadow and Bear were rescued!
