Japan-US status• 2006 (the last year)
– 30Myen (~US$250k) for equipments• 37Myen (2006), 6.9Myen (2007), 8Myen (2008) were requested
at the beginning of SciBooNE.
– 5.6Myen (~$50k) for travel• 6.5Myen was requested
• 2007 (Proposal deadline is January 31st, 2007)– (37-30)M +6.9M + = (~14 + ) Myen will be reques
ted for equipments.• ~8Myen (6.0 Myen expect) for off-line computing w/ RAID disks.• ~8Myen (6.0 Myen expect) for upgrade.• ~3Myen (2.0 Myen expect) for others (rental car, etc..) • (~5Myen for T2K Muon monitor test at the NuMI beam line.)
– 5 Myen will be requested for travel.– Additional 2.5 Myen from JSPS for travel [approved]

Japan-US Budget Status (in confidential?)
• In 2007, MEXT (A Japanese funding agency) reduces the preliminary plan of budget for Japan-US because the agreement for energy research between Japan and US was expired in 2005.– 873Myen (2006) → 442Myen (2007)– KEK director is under negotiation with MEXT.
We do not know the final outcome yet.– IPNS director recognizes the importance of Sc
iBooNE, and I guess that the impact to SciBooNE is not large (my guess).
4
1. Off-Line Computing (and spares for online equipments)
• We will request 8Myen (~$65k) for offline CPU, RAID disks and some of online spares, and will get ~6Myen (~$50k) in my guess.– ~$20k for Off-line CPUs– ~$20k for RAID disks.– ~$10k for spares?
• If you think that it is not large enough, I will increase the request to Japan-US. Let me known by the end of this week.

2. SciBooNE Upgrade• Install the new photo-sensorInstall the new photo-sensor,
HPK MPPC, in the outer parts of SciBar scintillators.– Increase the fiducial [total] volu
me.• 260260 [280 280] cm2 (X-Y)
➪ 270270 [290290] cm2 (X-Y): ~8% increase
– Test for T2K-ND280• HPK MPPC will be used for T2K-N
D2802ch64 layers 4(2X+2Y)=512 channels are now empty.
6
HPK MPPC (Multi-Pixel Photon Counter).
• Multi-Pixel Giger Mode APD– High Gain: ~106
– Compact– Low Voltage operation: ~70V– High QE for a WLS fiber readout.
• 2~3 times higher than MAPMT
– Cheaper than MAPMT per channel.– Available from Nov. 2006.
• 150 MPPCs in Kyoto now
– High single photon noise rate• O(100kHz)
Yokoyama-san is the leader of the T2K-ND280 photo-sensor group.– You can ask details to Yokoyama-san.
Microstructure of 100 pixel device
100 and 400 pixels
6mm
1mm
100m
0PE
1PE2PE, …
ADC distributions for LED light.

What are necessary for upgrade w/ MPPC?
• Scintillators: Exist in SciBar• WLS fibers: will be purchased or we have them
at KEK.– 600ch 3m = 1.8km {~$5k}
• MPPC: will be purchased by J-US in June.– I cannot show the price yet. It is within our budget.
• Readout Electronics– Will be supplied by UK which develops the proto-type
electronics for T2K-ND280.
• Installation– During Summer shutdown.
