THE OGRE'S ARM.

Long long ago, there dwelt inthe mountain called Oyeyamaa race of fierce ogres. The chief ofthese ogres was named Shutendoji,and he and his followers came downfrom time to time upon the city of

Surprised and horror-stricken,Tsuna was fain to confess tohimself that this must indeed beShutendoji, whose very existence hehad doubted. This was no time forthought, however, and Tsuna at oncelaid hold of the ogre and tried topull him down.Then a fierce struggle began.

But Tsuna, being no match for theogre in strength, would assuredlyhave been lifted from the ground,

had he not succeeded in freeingone hand from the ogre's grasp,With this hand he drew his sword,and dealt one valiant blow at theogres arm. The arm fell, severedat the shoulder, and the ogre fledwith a hideous yell. As all searchfor the monster was in vain, Tsunaat length took up the arm, andreturned with it to Raiko's castle.Next

morning Tsuna, accompa-nied by his friends went to consulta famous wizard named Seimei asto what should be done with Shuten-doji's arm. Seimei advised that itshould be placed in a strong stonechest, and watched by Tsuna night

and day, for seven days. "But," saidSeimei to Tsuna, "you must purifyyourself by much fasting and pray-er, and spend those seven days inholy contemplation, holding conversewith none. Unless you faithfully car-ry out my directions, I foresee thatmisfortune will surely follow."Tsuna therefore caused a strong

stone chest to be prepared, placedthe ogre's arm within it, and,having purified himself by fastingand prayer, sat down alone to watchit* The doors were shut, and allvisitors refused admittance. Alone

One night, when the seven daysand nights were almost accomplished,came a knocking at the gate. "Whois there?" called out Tsuna. "It isyour old aunt from the country,"answered a cracked and feeble voice."Play open the door." Tsuna an-swered, "I am under a vow to holdconverse with none, until seven daysbe past. I cannot open the door evento my aunt." "I know that," returnedthe voice: But I have come a longway on purpose to see you, I amfootsore and weary, surely you willnot turn me away,"Tsuna still refused for some time;

be persuaded to open the door* "Ihave heard of your noble exploit,"said the old woman as she came in,"and I have come all this long wayto tell you how proud I am of mybrave nephew." "And where is theogre's arm now!" she continued,when Tsuna had thanked her forher kindness in coming to see him.

Tsuna, quickly recovering fromliis surprise, rushed out; but not atrace of the ogre was to be found.Sad and crest-fallen, the warrior
