Homework DUE THURSDAY 20th LOVELY HOUR LONG DETENTION

FRIDAY 21st FOR THOSE WHO DONT DO IT.

Write an essay on the following question:

What are the important representations in the two films you have studied? Compare andcontrast these representations.

Hint the representations we have looked at in the last few lessons are: masculinity, Arabs, Iraq/ The Gulf(but rememberJarhead is set in Saudi Arabia), The representation of war, Representation of mental illness.

OK folks so we are getting a little better at structure but very few peoples structure is perfect so here we goagain

PLEASE READ, READ IT HARD, IMPRINT THIS STRUCTURE IN YOUR BRAIN.

Introduction- What are representations? why are they important? What are the two films you are looking at?Make sure when you first mention the films during your intro you do so like so: The Hurt Locker(2009)directed by Kathryn Bigelow and mention a tiny bit of context i.e. follows the story of a team of Bombdisposal experts during the Iraq War. From then on in you can just refer to it as The Hurt Locker(or THL ifyou want to abbreviate). Then outline what your paragraphs will be on. So something like: in this essay I shallbe comparing the representation of men in relation to masculinity, the representation of Arabs and the

    representation of mental illness.

Paragraphs-Your three- four paragraphs should be focused on only one representation per paragraph. Youmust use film terminology. We only understand representations through micro and macro analysis so youneed to use specific examples from the films.

Conclusion Go back to representations. Why are representations important? Why are they important in thesefilms? Why are the representations different in the two films? What do the differences in the representations

tell us about the films focus? Ie representations of war are different because the focus of Jarhead is boredom/politics etc. and the focus of The Hurt Locker is tension/ character

A Brief History of Mental Illness

and War By 1914 British doctors working in military hospitals noticed patients suffering from "shell

shock". Early symptoms included tiredness, irritability, giddiness, lack of concentration andheadaches. Eventually the men suffered mental breakdowns making it impossible for them toremain in the front-line. Some came to the conclusion that the soldiers condition was causedby the enemy's heavy artillery. These doctors argued that a bursting shell creates a vacuum, and when the air rushes into this vacuum it disturbs the cerebro-spinal fluid and this canupset the working of the brain.

Some doctors argued that the only cure for shell-shock was a complete rest away from thefighting. If you were an officer you were likely to be sent back home to recuperate. However, the army was less sympathetic to ordinary soldiers with shell-shock. Some senior officerstook the view that these men were cowards who were trying to get out of fighting.

Between 1914 and 1918 the British Army identified 80,000 men (2% of those who saw activeservice) as suffering from shell-shock. A much larger number of soldiers with these

symptoms were classified as 'malingerers' and sent back to the front-line. In some casesmen committed suicide. Others broke down under the pressure and refused to obey theorders of their officers. Some responded to the pressures of shell-shock by deserting.Sometimes soldiers who disobeyed orders got shot on the spot. In some cases, soldierswere court-martialled.

Official figures said that 304 British soldiers were court-martialled and executed. A commonpunishment for disobeying orders was Field Punishment Number One. This involved theoffender being attached to a fixed object for up to two hours a day and for a period up to

three months. These men were often put in a place within range of enemy shell-fire.
