Advanced technology based skills are also necessary for teachers to learn. These skills
either add to instructional value at a high level, or will become an integral part of classroom
instruction in the near future. It is not an option for a teacher to become content with their level
of technology skills because technology is always moving forward. Neglecting to acquire new
skills will leave teachers further behind when preparing students with the proper awareness of
technology in todays hi-tech world. The advanced technology based skills can be broken into
the following categories: (Route 21, 2007, para. 1-4). (Please see Diagram 2-B for a complete list
of the advanced technology based skills a teacher should work towards acquiring.)
1. Life and Career Skills
2. Learning and Innovation Skills
3. Information Media and Technology Skills
4. Core Subjects and 21st
These advanced skills will allow teachers to stay ahead of todays standards while leading
students to grasp what will be expected of them in the near future.
Century Themes
When comparing the aforementioned skills with the ISTE National Educational
Technology Standards (NETST) it is clear that the abovementioned basic skills are crucial to
even attempt to meet NETST. Without the basics, teachers would never be able to accomplish
the goals set by the ISTE. The advanced skills mentioned above compliment NETST. When
applied in tandem, these skills lay the framework for teachers to fully integrate technology into
the classroom. Teachers who possess this type of skill set can meet current academic standards
fully while readying students to be valuable members of our ever evolving technological society.
