Critical Analysis of production work
This analysis of my work will be covering the following points that are listed below and then I will be summarising what I have learned and how I can improve my work standard for the next project:What could have been done better:• Planning the Street Environment• Timekeeping• Scaling the EnvironmentThings I feel were done to the best of my abilities:• My 3D Environment• Environment Props• Research into Sci-Fi environments
Firstly I will cover the matter of the planed layout of my 3D Environment as it changed massively while I was designing it with the original idea being this:
And the final environment being this shown below, however the design changed more than this along the way as this is the dialled down version:
The second issue I had was my timekeeping as towards the beginning I was trying to work out a decent schedule between other college work and this project at the same time, however during the ‘middle’ portion of project I created a simple yet effective schedule that solved this problem effectively meaning I had much more time to improve my skills at 3DS MAX and also refine my work along the way.
The final issue is that of the environments Scale, as I had been working in Meters to try and match real world equivalent I realised that when importing it into UDK it was extremely small compared to the rest of the world inside of UDK. To account for this I am going to work out the correct scaling needed for the export into UDK so I can fix this at a later date.
Moving onto the parts of this project I think were done to the best of my ability, to start with I have to say that I am really happy about the final product especially with the building designs as I believe they capture the Sci-Fi theme perfectly and look dystopian at the same time. Additionally I am happy with how it all looks when put together as it resembles a sort of complex which is although not what I was going for, I am still really happy with the final product.
I am also happy with how my environment props such as my Bus Stop and Street Lamp look in the final product, I believe that they match what I was looking for and fit in exactly as I imagined them doing so.
Lastly I am happy with the research I carried out on Sci-Fi buildings and environments from games such as Dues Ex, Fallout (Sci-Fi apocalypse style), Anno 2070 and many more which lead me to getting some amazing inspirations for my buildings.
Summary
In the end I feel that I have completed the project to the best of my abilities with the software (3DS MAX, Photoshop), additionally with my sketches. I admit up front that I was lazy in some parts but even so I went back and refined those pieces of work to an acceptable standard when I had any spare time.In my next project I will take this list into account to prevent my work being to a poor standard and to maintain my grade.
The parts of the project I am most happy with would have to be my final environment and the props within said environment.
