2014 Cover of Leatherneck Magazine

The 2014 Cover of Leatherneck Magazine featured a painting depicting Captain Jesse Folmar’s victory over a MiG 15 during the Korean War while flying the legendary F-4U4 Corsair. The Corsair, originally designed as a fighter was never intended to tangle with a jet. By the Korean War, the proven work horse was found to be greatly suited to the ground attack role. That did not stop determined Marine Corps aviators from using the slower Corsair to shoot down the quick and nimble MiG when the opportunity presented itself as it did for Captain Folmar on September 10, 1952. The magazine also featured an article written by Jason concerning this historical event.

2012 Cover of Leatherneck Magazine

In 2012, The United States Marine Corps celebrated the 100th year of Naval Aviation. In order to commemorate this significant milestone, Leatherneck Magazine chose to develop a special cover for their May issue. Jason Breidenbach was selected to design and paint the cover for the issue along with a commemorative poster that came as an insert. Jason chose three significant Marines to adorn the cover, along with aircraft that have contributed greatly to the richness of Marine Corps aviation history. The three Marines chosen are Alfred Cunningham, the first Marine Corps Aviator, Gregory “Pappy” Boyington, commanding officer of VMF 214, the “Black Sheep” squadron, and Lieutenant General Frank Peterson, the first African American Marine Corps aviator. The Marine Corps Gazette also commissioned Jason to produce their cover for the same month.

2009 Cover of Leatherneck Magazine

In May of 2009, Leatherneck Magazine published an issue with a story about a World War I Marine Corps aviator named Lieutenant Edmund Chamberlain of San Antonio, TX. On July 28, 1918 Lieutenant Chamberlain took part in an aerial battle with twelve German aircraft. He downed five enemy aircraft and after receiving damage to his own aircraft, dove for the ground and scattered a detachment of enemy soldiers. He landed behind enemy lines and used deception to escape and capture a German soldier. He was recommended for the Victoria Cross and the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions.

Marine Corps Football Program

Between 1919 and 1972, the Marine Corps Football Team was a major competitor within the collegiate rotation. Major Ronald Eckert was the last coach of the team, coaching the 1971 and 1972 seasons. Mr. Eckert commissioned Jason Breidenbach to develop a painting that would capture the history of the team and highlight the last season. The painting combines elements from the team’s distant past with some of the star players from the final two seasons in order to educate about the team’s proud history.

Buzzin Cuzzin Warbird Digest is a magazine dedicated to documenting the restoration of antique fighter aircraft, such as the P-51 Mustang. The magazine commissioned Jason Breidenbach to produce artwork for the magazine on four separate occasions. In 2011, Warbird Digest commissioned Jason to produce a painting for an article about a newly completed restoration project, a P-51D named “Buzzin’ Cuzzin”. During World War II the original Buzzin Cuzzin was stationed at Duxford Airfield as part of the 83rd Fighter Squadron, 78th Fighter Group. It was flown and named by Lt. William B. Spengler of Chicago, Illinois. On March 19, 1945, Lt. Spengler tangled with two Messerschmitt ME109’s and damaged both. The newly restored aircraft was painted exactly as the P-51 flown by Lt. Spengler during the war. The painting was added to the article to show the aircraft in action as it had been during the war.

In August of 1944, while escorting a group of bombers to a target in Czechoslovakia, then Lieutenant McGee got entered a pursuit with a German Focke Wolfe 190, which he eventually shot down. The painting, “Tenacious Warrior” depicts this event as it began to unfold at an altitude of 24,000 feet.

Ain't Misbehavin' On January 14, 1945 Lt. Jesse Richard Frey of the 362nd Fighter Squadron of the 357th Fighter Group was flying the P-51D named "Ain't Misbehavin'. “ Lt. Frey's squadron was returning from an escort mission to Derben, Germany. The flight lead spotted a German Messerschmitt BF-109G traveling in the opposite direction as it emerged from a cloud. He pulled his aircraft into a steep bank to the left and then radioed Lt. Frey that something had gone wrong with his engine. The flight lead directed Lt. Frey to pursue and destroy the German fighter. Lt. Frey increased power and nosed over into a dive to close with the enemy aircraft. He approached the BF-109G from above and rear. He let out a burst from his six .50 calibers and immediately the BF-109G pulled straight up and back entering into a violent snap roll and spin. After passing over the doomed BF-109G, Lt. Frey rejoined his flight leader to continue the trip home. The painting, “Ain’t Misbehavin” shows this scene, just as Lt. Frey passed over the disabled Messerschmitt.

Angels Over Inchon “Operation Chromite” or the Invasion of Inchon began on September 15, 1950. The first phase included the bombardment of the Wolmi-do peninsula by ships and aircraft. Wolmi-do’s strategic location bordering Inchon harbor made seizing the peninsula crucial to the success of the invasion. When a relieved MacArthur learned that the outer harbor had been secured at the cost of only 17 wounded, he had RAdm Doyle signal the task force commander: "The Navy and Marines have never shone more brightly than this morning." The painting, “Angels Over Inchon”, depicts Ensign Edward Laney of VF-53 and his flight lead as they flew their United States Navy F4U-4Bs over the assaulting Marines.

Moonlight Warrior On Christmas night 1944 Lieutenant Robert L. Ferguson, a pilot in the 6th Night Fighter Squadron, was flying in his assigned P-61A-5 named “The Virgin Widow.” He had lifted off at 2204 hours and was soon vectored to a possible enemy aircraft. It turned out to be a Japanese G4M “Betty” bomber. After stealthily closing with the aircraft, Ferguson fired a short burst into the right engine and fuselage. The enemy bomber began to burn and after another burst of 20mm, exploded and fell into the sea. The P-61A Black Widow was one of the world’s first aircraft to be designed from the ground up as a night fighter. The development of the radar which made night fighting possible was a joint venture between Jack Northrop and the British military who had already done much of the development on the radar system.

Technical Manual Illustration

One form of maintenance instruction that has grown in popularity is the Interactive Electronic Technical Manual (IETM). IETMs can be loaded onto a laptop and paged through much like a website. Such manuals present the opportunity to depict parts and assemblies in a more engaging format using color illustrations that make instructions easier to understand. The illustration above was created for an IETM.
