Marrying at the age of 23 and meeting as ateenager at the Holland State Park while limp-ing around on crutches after a recent knee sur-gery, crutches and beaches don’t usually gohand-in-hand, however, lucky for Jim, surgerydidn’t stop her from enjoying the summer ac-tivities. The couple would be blessed with twodaughters, both of whom she reports are her“greatest accomplishment in life,” being amother and having pride and love for herdaughters.

Retirement would lead the couple to travel-ing to places such as the Netherlands, France,Germany, and Hawai, for pleasure and geneol-gical research.

Salome is enjoying her retirement reading, continuing to play the piano, crafting, writingletters to family members and long walks out-side any chance she gets. She also enjoys helping

Born July, 7th 1939 in Holland Michigan, her parents Mike and Thressa Wiersma wel-comed her peaceful presence into the world;Mike worked for Baker furniture and operateda small farm to support the family which livedin the then rural side of Holland between Lake-wood Blvd and Beeline road.

Salome reports fond memories of her child-hood including riding her bike with her sib-lings, venturing off on horseback (family farm)and playing on the teeter-totter that her fatherbuilt for the family of 5 children in all, Salomebeing the eldest of which.

held a fondness for assisting the geriatric popu-lation and has done so now for over 17 yearswith no plans on switching career fields any timesoon. Prior to this role (going into her 4th yearthis June☺) she worked at Mercy Health inMuskegon in the rehabilitation floating betweenboth hospitals and the Mary Free Bed Acute Re-habilitation unit, this 4 year venture facilitated abackground that is something reports as beingvery useful in her current role with Life Enrich-ment especially during this pandemic as you re-ally have to think “outside of the box,” to plan orimplement in room activities (which she didduring her time at the hospital) , in short, youcould reason that her prior role helped better

equip her for the unfore-seen 2020 pandemic.

Laura’s current hobbiesinclude spending time withher teenagers, hiking, bird-watching, and listening toand singing music (mainlyin the car).

Life enrichment ideasfor Laura or any othermember of the Life Enrich-ment team are greatly ap-preciated, we are hopefulthat one day soon we willbe able to resume group ac-tivities and look forward tothat day, in the meantime, please let the departmentknow of any Life Enrich-ment supplies you mayneed (reading material, puzzles, sewing supplies, etc).

To this day,David frequently voices his upset over this sillyfact, important to note potato chips are his fa-vorite snack still to this day ☺

Raised in a variety of places in west Michi-gan, Laura recalls no home-town, however, primarilyresided in Holland duringher adolescence; attendingthe majority of Hollandschools on both the northand south side of town. Groundhog Day - Tuesday, February 2

Administrator NotesDear family and friends of the Appledorn Assisted Liv-

ing Center south community, February a monthsynonymous with hearts, chocolates, flowers, and yes youguessed it, the word love!

Local store shelves are infiltrated with heart shapedboxes, stuffed animals galore, and oh my, the Hallmarkcards, ‘to boot.’ One could argue this month revolvesaround couples; then my thoughts wonder to the manyother things individuals, “fall in love,” with.

Music for instance, musicians spend tireless hours put-ting their artistic endeavors to work for others to enjoy, atrue labor of love. Then there is food, yes we all seem to loveit and appreciate the creativity of a chef ’s skillful hands andintuitive palates (Thank you Justin Smith!) or what aboutnature?? Blue skies, green grass, endless colors cascading thewings of birds, butterflies, flowers, trees, the list goes on, yeseasy to conclude nature can be loved.

My sentiments as this flowery month approaches leadto me a sharing a quick story of Valentine’s Day past… Inbegan at the Meijer’s on 16th street, on Valentine’s Day infact. During my shopping venture that morning I stumbledacross a clear plastic sandwich bag tapped on the walllabeled, “read me,” curiously I opened the bag and found athread spool enclosed, a spool not filled with thread, yetrather a tiny, colorful scroll, which contained a messagedetailing the importance of doing things you love each dayor at least making an effort to, it also talked about howValentine’s Day can be challenging for those whom recentlylost loved ones (partners). In short, the thought-filled noteleft that day by a good Samaritan offered a challenge to listat least 15 things you love to do, and try and do at least onedaily and I’m extended the same offer to all reading this, aswell as a Happy Valentine’s Day to all ☺
