For many new Jayhawks, college preparation began long before the application process. Parents, grandparents and great-great-

grandparents established roots on the Hill, earning KU degrees and passing the tradition through the family tree. This year’s Jayhawk Generations feature includes 200 freshmen who continue the tradition—some of which originated in the University’s earliest years. These students have already achieved success in academics, athletics, theatre, music and community service. Many of the Kansans graduated in the top 10 percent of high school seniors and earned recognition as Kansas Honor Scholars. The Office of Admissions and Scholarships worked alongside the Alumni Association’s Julie Hedges and Helen Meseraull to trace KU family histories. The roots run deep as students make their home on Mount Oread and proud parents celebrate another branch on the Jayhawk tree.

Fifth Generation

Samuel Callan fought for the Firebirds at Law-rence Free State High School, and now joins a flock of a different feather. In high school, he honed his athletic skills on the football and rugby fields, and plans to join the KU Rugby Club. He was a mem-ber of the FYI leadership club and earned the 2010 Peer Education Award. Samuel’s work with Firebird Productions inspired him to pursue a film degree as he follows his sister Sadie Callan Stanclift, b’08, g’09,

to the Hill. Their parents are Anna McNeill Callan, c’82, and Daniel Callan, who attended KU in 1980 and 2002. Samuel’s maternal lineage continues with grandparents Neil, b’52, and Betty Weber McNeill, g’82, and great-grandparents Harold, ’27, and Ethel-mae Dodds Weber, ’26. Samuel’s great-great-grandfa-ther Frank Dodds lettered in track and football and received a KU law degree in 1904.

Standout football player Tyler Fee earned honors on the Hutchinson High School team, including first-team 5A All-State Linebacker and the Kansas Football Coaches Asso-ciation Top 11. The Salthawks won the state championship all four years of Tyler’s high school career. Off the field, he was a member of

Student Council and National Honor Society, and won the American Legion Citizenship Award. Tyler’s Jayhawk lineage began with his paternal great-great-grandfather, Otis Allen, 1896, and continues with his great-grandparents Oliver, e’26, and Josephine Allen Johnson, c’28. Tyler is the grandson of James, c’54, and Martha Johnson Fee, c’55, and the son of Allen Fee, c’84. He joins his brother, Jordan, at KU.

Hannah Gerwick excelled in athletics at Shawnee Mission East High School and now joins the fam-ily team of Jayhawks. She earned varsity letters in swimming and basketball, and competed at state in both sports her senior year, help-ing the swim team earn the state championship. Hannah’s maternal Jayhawk lineage began in the 1800s with two sets of great-great-grandparents: Robert Barnard, 1895, and Clara Butler Wheeler Wagstaff, 1892, as well as KU Endowment co-founder Charles Sumner, c1880, and KU’s first music graduate, Mabel Gore Gleed, f1887. KU spirit is just one family trait that Apryl Hedges inherited. As a member of the Lawrence Free State High School soccer team, she demonstrated athletic abilities passed down from her maternal great-great-grandfather, A. R. “Bert” Ken-nedy, 1899, KU football coach from 1904 to 1910. Apryl’s maternal Jayhawk lineage continues with great-grandparents Ralph Sr., e’25, and Ruth Kennedy King, c’25, and George Forman, c’23, m’24. Her maternal grandpar-ents are Ralph Jr., b’52, l’54, and Mary Anne Forman King, d’53, f’83. Apryl’s mother is Kathy King, d’84.

On her paternal side, grandparents Charles, c’56, l’59, and Yvonne Richardson Hedges, ’59, led the way, followed by Apryl’s father, Blake Hedges, ’83.

Ben Martin comes to KU with a wide worldview. A native of Fort Worth, Texas, he participated in the Junior World Affairs Council and Model UN. He attended the National Care Convention, which focused on global hunger and human rights. At Fossil Ridge High School, he devel-oped an interest in human biology, and now enters KU’s pre-medicine program. Ben’s brother, Kyle, welcomes him to the Hill. Their maternal great-great-grandmother, Alice Rose McColloch, c1905, began the Jayhawk family tradition. The lineage continues with great-

grandparents Earl, c’29, and Rose McColloch Dressler, c’28. Ben is the grandson of Jack Dressler, c’52, and Jane Heywood Dressler Van Rheen, b’53. His mother is Susan Dressler Martin, c’83.

Fifth Generation

Mandy Mulich proved her talents in the classroom and on the court at Louisburg High School. As a freshman, she started at point guard for the bas-ketball team and played all four years, helping to earning a spot on the All Tournament Team. She also joined the volleyball team her junior year and sang in the choir, which won superior rating at the Kansas State Musical Festival. She now joins her sister,

Katie, on the Hill. Their parents are Michael, ’86, and Amy Isern Mulich, j’84. Mandy’s maternal Jayhawk lineage continues with grandparents Alan Isern, ’57, and Gretchen Kendall Pratt, c’56; and great-grand-parents Donald, c’27, m’27, and Ester Jones Kendall, c’27. She is the great-great-granddaughter of Hiram Jones m1900, and Alice Penfield, 1887.

With so many Jayhawks in the family, James (Ste-phen) McKinney will be anything but lonely as he moves from the Lone Star State. This Austin native played for the McNeil High School golf team, and was a member of the Marching Mavericks Band, National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta. At KU, he joins the School of Engineering. His family’s Jayhawk tradition began in 1893 when his paternal great-great-grandmother Kate Blair Evans earned a College of Liberal Arts & Sciences degree. Stephen’s great-grandparents are James, ’24, and Mary Ev-ans McKinney, c’24; and Fred, ’22, and Helen Peck Zoellner, c’21. All four of his grandparents attended KU, including the late James, e’48, and Zara Zoellner

McKinney, b’51; and Eugene, g’74, and Marsha Fields Wren, ’65. Stephen’s parents are James F. (Ric), b’85, e’85, and Brigitte Wren McKinney, d’86. Four aunts, two uncles and several cousins also attended KU.

Fourth Generation

Madelyn Alexander made her Jayhawk family proud as a scholar athlete on the volleyball, cross country and swim teams at Blue Valley

Northwest High School. An Overland Park native, she volunteered with Matthew’s Ministry, Harvesters and the Special Olympics, and as an assistant volleyball coach. Madelyn joins her brother, Nicholas, on the Hill. Their KU lineage includes their parents, Brent, j’87, and Ann Warner Alexander, f’86. Madelyn’s maternal line continues with grandparents Jay Warner, b’55, and Jan Witherspoon, d’55, and great-grandparents, Harold, ’25, and Helen Ryan Warner, ’25; and Floyd Garland Skaer, p’25. Her paternal grandfather is Scott Alexander, c’60.

Overland Park native Lindsey Bloom brings a love of Germany to Mount Oread. At Olathe East High School,

she was president of German Club and participated in a Germany-American high school exchange program. She earned membership in the German National Honors Society and received International Studies Endorsement. At her church, Lindsey served on the music and mission trip planning committee. She now follows her sisters, Ashley, c’09, m’10, and Whitney, e’10, to KU. Lindsey is the daughter of James, j’80, g’83, g’08, and Susan Owens Bloom, d’80, g’87. Her paternal grandparents are Lewis, m’57, and Olive Selfridge Bloom, ’54. Lindsey’s maternal line extends to her grandparents, Dean, b’53, l’68, and Doris McConnell Owens, f’53, and her great-grandparents, Howard, ’19, and Elma Hunzicker McConnell, ’18.

Codie Bontz is ready to pin some high marks in KU’s pre-medicine program. At Andover Central High School, he qualified for the state competition four times

with the wrestling team, and once with the track relay team. He also excelled in the classroom, earning the U.S.

Army Reserve National Scholar/Athlete Award and various scholarships. Codie’s paternal KU lineage continues with his father, Lindon Bontz, ’80. He is the grandson of Antoine III, ’52, and Nancy Lichty Bontz, ’53. Antoine Bontz Jr., ’22, is Codie’s great-grandfather.

Blue Valley North High School graduate Danny Brown steps in time with his family of Jayhawks. In high school, he played lacrosse and was a member of the

marching band and yearbook staff. The Leawood native follows four siblings to KU: Benjamin, c’00; Angela, who attended nursing school; Anthony, c’03; and Joseph, c’08. Their parents are John, j’72, and Candace Zeni Brown, d’73, g’76. Danny’s paternal lineage continues with grandparents, Robert, c’26, and Mathilda Barisas Brown, ’63, and his great-grandparents, Robert, c1892, and Maude Springer Brown, c1891.

Taylor Burkhead swam through her high school years, but is not racing to finish college. At Shawnee Mission East High School, her strokes helped the swim

team win the 2010 state championship. She was inducted into National Honor Society and earned the President’s Award for Education Excellence and Volunteer Service. Taylor’s siblings, David Burkhead, c’92, l’95, and Katherine Burkhead Nicolarsen, s’00, MSW’02, preceded her on the Hill. Their paternal Jayhawk lineage continues with their father, Harlan Burkhead, c’65, l’68, and grandparents, Dwight, c’35, and Lucile Thompson Burkhead, c’34. Taylor is the great-granddaughter of Richard Thompson, l1905.

Grant Burnside had a successful golf career on the Shawnee Mission East High School team, which culminated

with the team’s 6A State Championship. Representing the fourth generation of Burnsides at KU, the Overland Park native also follows three generations to Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Grant’s mother is Diane Sader Burnside, c’81. His paternal lineage continues with his father, Bradley Burnside, b’79, g’80, and his grandparents, Clyde Jr., c’50, and Nancy Davis Burnside, ’51. His great-grandfather Clyde Burnside Sr. attended KU with the class of 1923. Grant joins his brother, Andrew, on the Hill.

Illinois native Anna Cory dives into studies on Mount Oread. At Dunlap High School, she competed in diving, cheerleading and gymnastics. She was

named an Illinois State Scholar and received the Prairie State Achievement Award in math, reading and science. Anna now joins her brother Nick at KU. Their parents are Donald, c’78, m’83, and Linda Cory, assoc. Anna’s Jayhawk grandparents are Richard Cory, b’50, and Jack, e’59, and Karen Theis Ling, ’60. Her great-grandmother Pauline Ingels Cory, c1912, was the first to walk down the Hill.

Michael Davis leaves the Stephen F. Austin High School golf team behind for a change of scenery. When he wasn’t on the

links, the Sugar Land, Texas, native taught serves and backhands at a local junior tennis academy. He now plans to join his sister, Lindsey, in the business school. Their parents are William, b’83, and Julie Jones Davis, j’84. Michael’s maternal grandparents are Dick Jones, b’59, l’62, and Judith Wilson Sizemore, d’61, and step-grandfather Michael Sizemore, l’67. Michael’s great-grandfather is Harvey Wilson, b’33.

Kirk Doerr is preparing for a successful business career. At Shawnee Mission East High School, he was a member of DECA and placed third in role play at the 2009 state competition. He also played football and basketball, and volunteered at the Hope Center and the Village Food Pantry. Kirk’s parents are Brian, b’84, l’87, and Cynthia Englund Doerr, c’85. His maternal KU lineage continues with his grandparents Karl, ’59, and Nancy Englund, g’85, and his great-grandfather, the late Karl H. Englund, e’26.

Megan Dunmire will do well on Mount Oread with her knack for academics, community service and the Spanish language. At Olathe East High School, she received the

Presidential Service Award and was a member of National Honor Society and National Spanish Honor Society. Active in Spanish Club, she spent hours volunteering at the Center of Grace Hispanic Community Center, Angel Babies and her church. Megan will share the Hill with her brother, Brian, a junior. Their paternal Jayhawk lineage continues with their father, David, c’83, and grandparents Fred, b’55, and Catherine Campbell Dunmire, c’55. Her great-grandparents are Ray Dunmire, c1915; John Ross, c1913, m1915; and Laura Harkrader Campbell, c’22.

Lindsey Eriksen will feel right at home on the Hill, with the support of her Jayhawk family. This stellar student from Hutchinson High School participated in golf and cheerleading, and made plenty of time for volunteer work. Lindsey’s accolades include the KSHSAA Citizenship Award, KU’s Watkins-Berger scholarship, and recognition as a Kansas Honor Scholar and a Leader of Today and Tomorrow. Lindsey is the daughter of Jeff, b’79, and Marla Mugler Eriksen, b’79. Her KU grandparents are John, b’57, and Jane Faubion Eriksen, ’58. Her great-grandparents, Carl, c’30, and Dorothy Graber Eriksen, c’30, began the Jayhawk family tradition. Lindsey follows her sisters, Whitney, c’08, j’08, and Kelsey, b’10.

Alexandra Fields is sure to find Mount Oread photogenic. At Shawnee Mission East High School, she received myriad awards for her

academic and artistic achievements, including first place for photography in the school’s art show and recognition in the Duke Talent Identification Program. She was a member of National Honor Society and a Kansas Honor Scholar. Allie played violin and harp in the symphonic orchestra, and also is a volunteer harpist for the United Way and church events. Her parents are Thomas, c’87, and Elizabeth Reussner Fields, j’88. Her paternal KU lineage continues with her grandmother Janet Sloan Fields, c’45, f’46, and her great-grandfather Charles Sloan, e’17. On Allie’s mother’s side, grandparents Ronald, d’59, and Elaine Piper Reussner, d’60, and great-grandparents Robert, c’27, and Lorene Grant Piper, f’28, preceded her on the Hill.

Miranda Fields was a standout athlete and student at Mill Valley High School. The Shawnee native played volleyball, softball and tennis, and volunteered

with the YouthFriends mentoring program and Community Service Club. She was named Kansas Governor’s Scholar, Kansas Honor Scholar and Kansas Board of Regents Scholar. Miranda follows a long line of Jayhawks to the Hill, starting with her paternal great-grandmother, Gladys Myrtel Apple Fields, f’25. Her paternal line continues with grandparents John Fields, c’55, l’57, and Beverly Barnett Fields, d’58, g’82. Jack, b’86, and Lyn Hambley Fields, b’86, are her parents.

Molly Flood adapts easily to new surroundings. She spent freshman and sophomore year at Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville, Ill., where she was a member of Ski Club and the symphonic band. When her family moved to Orange County, Calif., she joined the yearbook staff at Mission Viejo High School and coordinated activities for the French Student Exchange Program. Molly is the daughter of Stephen, j’83, and Sharon Bodin Flood, j’86, c’87, g’87. Her maternal grandparents are Gerald Bodin, ’51, and Lorraine Godding Bodin, j’53. She is the great-granddaughter of Frank E. Godding, c’16.

A native of the Sunshine State, Sam Foltz moved to Ohio, where he graduated from Chagrin Falls High School with honors. He pitched for the varsity baseball team and was named to the region’s All Conference Team and All Academic Team. Sam joins a legacy of Jayhawks including maternal great-grandfather Dix Teachenor, c’16, and grandparents Francis D. Franklin, c’40, and the late Dorothy Teachenor Franklin, ’43. He is the son of Chris, b’78, and Nea Franklin Foltz, j’78.

Brice Haden may be the new king of the Hill. At Blue Valley West High School, the varsity tight end was named junior class king during Sweetheart

Week, and was on the king’s court his senior year. The Stilwell native served as a Jag Mentor and earned an honest living at the Wolf Creek Golf Course. Brice is the son of Steve, b’86, and Abigail Eilenberger Haden, ’89. His paternal Jayhawk lineage continues with grandmother Elmyra Crane Haden, c’53, and great-grandparents Maurice, ’25, and Alice Greisa Crane, ’25.

John Hall marches to the beat of his own drum. At Salina Central High School he kept time for the marching and jazz bands. He is a member of the

Kansas Music Educators Association Band, and consistently received superior rating for percussion solo at the KMEA state and regional competitions. John also won the Mustang Triple Crown Athletic Award after earning letters in soccer, diving and track in the same year. He is the great-grandson of J. Martin Hall, e’25, and Wallace, e’25, and Dorothy Mac Ivor James, c’25, who helped start the Jay Janes pep club. His maternal line continues with his grandmother Alberta James Daw, c’52. John’s parents are James, ’80, and Brigid Daw Hall, c’82.

Rachael Hazzard showed her spirit at two high schools and now cheers for the crimson and blue. In Scottsdale, Ariz., Rachael was a member of the

Horizon High School varsity cheer squad and also cheered competitively. She volunteered with the National Charity League before enrolling at Lawrence Free State High School for her senior year. Rachael’s Jayhawk lineage includes her mother Chris Nieder Johnson, c’83, and continues on her maternal side with her grandfather, Dean Nieder, ’59, and great-grandmother, Alta Murray Nieder, who attended KU in 1932 to earn her teaching certification.

Blake Heenan steps up to bat for a great college career. His standout athleticism on the Blue Valley Northwest baseball and football teams earned his recognition

as an Easter Kansas League Scholar Athlete and 810 Sports Scholar Athlete. He also was a member of National Honor Society. Blake’s maternal line goes four generations deep, beginning with his great-grandmother Dorothy Gsell Canary, c’26. His grandmother, Nancy Canary Rogers, d’54, was KU’s first female student body president. Blake is the son of Susan Rogers Heenan, d’83.

Humanitarian Kailyn Keplinger earned the Presidential Community Service Award for her time spent volunteering with organizations in the Kansas City area, including

Harvesters, Hope Faith Ministries and the Ronald McDonald House. At Blue Valley North High School, she excelled as a student and cheerleader, and was named Diver of the

Year on Hallbrook Country Club’s diving team. Kailyn’s KU family tree begins with her great-grandfather, Lewis Walter Keplinger, l1913, and continues with her grandparents, Donald Keplinger, b’42, and Janet Viets Keplinger, c’42. Her father is Bruce Keplinger, c’74; and three older siblings preceded her on the Hill: Mark, c’99, Marie, c’03, and Kristen, d’07.

Max Lemieux moves to Mount Oread with a mechanical mindset. He graduated from Blue Valley West High School, where he wrestled and ran cross country. The Overland Park native traveled with his church youth group on mission trips to Mexico and Texas. His brother Brent welcomes him to KU as Max begins courses in mechanical engineering. Their parents are Steve, c’82, and Cheri Hayman Lemieux, n’84. Max’s maternal Jayhawk line continues with his grandparents, the late Clarence Jr., c’57, and Lavon Brown Hayman, ’56. He is the great-grandson of Francis Brown, ’24, and Myrtle Webber Hawks, p’24.

Jennifer Loyet boasts impressive accolades in both DECA and dance. The Washington native received state and regional awards in the young entrepreneur organization for fashion merchandising. She also was honored at various dance competitions around the country, and

helped rebuild the Woodinville High School cheerleading program. Jennifer’s maternal side is full of Jayhawks, including her mother, Elizabeth Mitchell Loyett, h’88, and her grandparents John III, c’62, m’66, and Ann Bell Mitchell, d’61. Her great-grandparents John II, m’38, and Bernitta Maxine Breon Mitchell, c’35, were first to walk down the Hill.

Sarah Marquis has an arm for tennis and a heart for charity. At Blue Valley North High School, she served as tennis captain and was named an East Kansas League Scholar

Athlete. Sarah’s volunteer work includes the Saint Michael & All Angels church nursery, Village Food Pantry, Hope Faith Ministries and the Ronald McDonald House. The Leawood native joins her sister Kaitlin at KU. Their paternal lineage continues with their father, Hoyt Marquis, j’84. Sarah is the

granddaughter of Edward, b’49, and Suzanne Hoyt Marquis, c’53. Her great-grandmother is Ruth Horton Hoyt, ’22.

Lana McDonald will adjust quickly to busy college life. At Satanta High School, she served on student council, Kayette and 4-H. She played volleyball,

basketball and softball, and was on the cheerleading squad. Lana was inducted into the United States Achievement Academy, was named a Kansas Honor Scholar and graduated high school as salutatorian. Lana follows her siblings, Natalie and Janelle to KU. Jayhawks on the paternal side of their family include their father Scott McDonald, b’80, and grandparents Charles McDonald, b’56, and the late Mary Charlene McCoy, ’57. Lana’s great-grandparents are Wayne, c’28, and Loraine Mace McCoy, ’31.

Sydney Rayl can hold her own on the Hill. As part of the Salina High School Central forensics team, she qualified for the CFL national tournament three times. She also served as copy editor for the yearbook her senior year and taught a weekly cooking class for children at the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank. Sydney was named a Kansas Honor Scholar and a KU Watkins-Berger Scholar. Her parents are Harris Rayl, c’75, g’78, and Shannon Drews Rayl, c’78. Her paternal Jayhawk line continues with her grandparents, the late Charles, b’43, and Virginia Harris Rayl, c’49. Sydney’s great-grandparents are Sidney, ’25, and Virginia Stowers Harris, ’24. Her sister, Alexandra, h’10, also preceded her at KU.

Maggie Rester’s teaching experience will help in her pursuit of an education degree. In her hometown

of Austin, Texas, she mentored students through the Peer Assistant and Leadership Program. A Texas Scholar, she excelled in the classroom and played on the Cedar Park High School golf team. Maggie joins her brother, Blair, on the Hill. Their parents are Matt, c’84, and Mary Alford Rester, c’84. Her paternal grandparents are the late Eugene Jr., ’49, and Marjorie Darby Alford, c’49. She is the great-granddaughter of Harry, assoc., and Edith Cubbison Darby, ’17.

Dan Simons didn’t travel far for college, but the branches of his KU family tree spread over 12 decades. A graduate of Bishop Seabury Academy in Lawrence, he played basketball

and ran cross country. As he joins his sister, Briahn, on the Hill, he plans to pursue an engineering degree. Dan’s Jayhawk line began with

his paternal great-grandparents, Dolph Sr., c’25, and Marie Nelson Simons, c’28, and grandparents, Dolph Jr., j’51, and Pamela Simons, assoc. He is the son of Dan Sr., c’85, and Trisha Malson Simons, c’84.

Curtis Stump’s mathematical mind will serve him well at KU. A graduate of Westminster Christian

Academy in St. Louis, he excelled in advanced placement classes and participated in National Honor Society and Summer Seminar, a trip with the school’s faculty. He also played varsity soccer and volunteered with the Bonhomme Presbyterian Church and St. Luke’s Hospital. Curtis’ Jayhawk lineage extends to his maternal great-grandparents Hugo, c’29, and Dorothy Dunmire Rumsey, c’30. His KU grandparents are Ann Rumsey Olson, f’57, and his paternal grandfather Harl Stump, m’65. Curtis is the son of Steve, e’86, and Lisa Olson Stump, b’86.

Megan Sullivan comes from Leawood in great shape to tackle the Hill. The Shawnee Mission East High School athlete competed on the soccer, cross country and

basketball teams. She also volunteered her time at Headstart and on church service trips. Megan follows her brothers, Pat, c’09; John, e’10; and Mike, a KU sophomore. The KU family tradition continues with their parents, Brad, c’76, m’79, and Sandy Sullivan, assoc. Megan’s paternal ancestry includes grandparents Henry Jr., c’49, m’52, and Mary Huse Sullivan, c’49; and great-grandparents Henry, c’18, m’20, and Helen Wedd Sullivan, c’18.

Marcus Tetwiler demonstrated his talents in the classroom, on the soccer field and on stage. As Paola High School’s Thespian of the Year, he landed several lead roles and was chosen to perform for the Blue Star Awards at Starlight Theater. He was a member of National Honor Society,

Tom Walsh will hit the books hard this year. The Minnesota native played rugby and football at Edina High School and managed the hockey

Sam Walter’s transition to college classes should be a breeze. As a standout student at Lawrence Free State High School, he took summer courses in Duke’s Talent Identification Program and traveled with an exchange program to Hiratsuka, Japan. He played soccer and rugby, and founded the Free State Chapter of Junior State of America. Sam’s Jayhawk line began with his maternal great-grandparents, Dick Williams, ’15, and Mary Gossard Williams Jackman, f’16, f’18. Max Archer joins the master’s in architecture program at KU with plenty of design experience in his tool belt. He was the architectural designer on the McPherson Residential Construction Management team that won first place in a national competition. Max is a KU Summerfield Scholar, Kansas Honor Scholar and a member of National Honor Society. He competed on the McPherson High School wrestling, football and cross country teams, and participated in Bike Across Kansas three times. Max follows his siblings, Abbey Archer-Rierson, d’07; Sam, d’10; and Anna, a KU junior. Their parents are Richard, MSW’88, and Jill Bremyer-Archer, ’75. Max’s maternal grandparents are John, c’41, l’46, and Jayne Williamson Bremyer, ’46.

Charles Bernard is ready to take on the business world—and college classes. While at Shawnee Mission East High School, he served as vice president

of operations and production at the Junior Achievement Student Company. He also assisted with peer tutoring, Environmental Club and Science Club, and volunteered with organizations around his hometown, Prairie Village. This Eagle Scout is a National Honor Scholar and Kansas Honor Scholar. Charles follows his brother Jamie, c’10, to KU. Their father is James Bernard Jr., c’73, and their grandparents are James Sr., c’41, l’48, and Marjorie Bernard, assoc.

Adam Blinn plans to put his technical mind to good use in KU’s engineering department. The Wichita native was on the football and wrestling teams at The Independent

School, and also was a member of the Robotics Team. Adam’s parents are Bob, l’84, and Kay Polson Blinn, n’74. His grandfather, the late Hugh Polson, ’50, started the KU family

tradition. Adam also follows his brother Jeffrey Allmon, c’04, to the Hill.

Ben Braun hopes to engineer the perfect college experience. At Hutchinson High School,

he founded the Engineering Club and, as president, organized a robotics competition and Engineering Weekend at KU. For his academic achievements, Ben was named a KU Summerfield Scholar, Robert Byrd Scholar and Kansas Honor Scholar. He also played varsity soccer and tennis for four years and helped the tennis team earn a state title. Ben follows his sisters, Kaleigh, e’10, and Becca, a senior at KU. Their parents are Steven, m’87, and Debra Bauman Braun, j’86. Ben’s grandfather Wesley Braun, g’69, was the first Jayhawk in the family.

Margaret Brill will have no trouble finding her niche on Mount Oread. At Shawnee Mission East High School, sports, classes and volunteer work kept her busy.

The award-winning DECA member participated in the association’s international competition her senior year. Margaret also volunteered in the SHARE program and served as chairman for two years. She joins her sister Anne on the Hill. Their Jayhawk lineage includes their father, Tom Brill, c’71, l’75, and grandmother Agnes Brill, c’82.

Jack Bush hit a grand slam when he chose to continue the family tradition. The Lawrence High

School graduate played on the 2009 6A State Champion baseball team, and founded the school’s Futsal Club his senior year to organize indoor soccer games. Jack studied Latin and Greek languages and traveled to Italy and Greece on a school trip. He now brings his worldly experience to

Wordsmith Mary Buttram brings experience and insight to KU’s School of Journalism. At Lafayette High School in Wildwood, Mo.,

Mary helped coordinate the student-run newspaper, the LHS Image. When she wasn’t in the newsroom or on the tennis court, Mary volunteered with school and church organizations, and spent one Spring Break in New Orleans with Habitat for Humanity. Mary’s maternal Jayhawk line continues with her mother, Susan Sellers Buttram, j’82, and her grandparents, Mert, b’54, and the late Ruth Ann “Roonie” Anderson Sellers, c’58.

Sean Conderman travels to the Hill all the way from Germany, where he graduated from Heidelberg American High School. He represented Heidelberg on the U.S.

European Command Teen Panel and was the U.S. Army Teen Panel representative for Europe. As a member of the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, he was named Cadet of the Year. Also recognized for his skills in the classroom, Sean was inducted into the National Society of High School Scholars. His Jayhawk roots began with his grandfather, the late J.D. Conderman, c’36, l’38. Sean’s father, Paul, c’72, l’75, and brother, Chris, c’04, m’09, continued the tradition.

Crosby Cooper dances her way into college life. This Overland Park native took lessons at the Miller Marley School of Dance and Voice for 16 years, and was a member of the Dazzler Dance Team at Blue Valley Northwest High School. She was a freshman mentor, vice president for the National Art Honor Society and a Kansas Honor Scholar. Crosby’s parents are Andy, b’84, and Ann Showalter Cooper, n’86. She is the granddaughter of the late David, b’57, and Jane Crosby Cooper, d’57.

Emily Downard dives into her first semester on the Hill. The Iowa native and four-year varsity swimmer at Ames High School qualified for the state swimming competition and was given the Richard K. Bliss swim award. She now

follows her brothers, Kyle, c’09, and Jared, to KU. Their parents are James, c’83, h’84, m’88, and Kim Casper Downard, h’84. Emily’s paternal Jayhawk lineage includes her grandparents Edward, b’49, and Claire Grothusen Downard, c’50.

Kelsie Fiss comes to KU as a Mount Oread Scholar, a testament to her academic achievements at St. Teresa’s Academy. The Prairie Village native also won National Scholastic

Art Awards for Ceramics and received the Pauline Reardon Athletic Award as a member of the volleyball, basketball, and track and field teams. During her junior year, she joined a mission trip to Peru. Kelsie now joins her sister Allie on the Hill. Their father is Robert Fiss, b’81, and their KU grandparents are the late Galen Fiss, d’53, and Nancy Hampton Fiss, f’54.

Joseph Flax works hard in a classroom and plays hard with a team. He lettered in football, basketball and track at Ness City High School. During his senior year, he ran with the 1A state track champions, and was named Central Plains League All-League Quarterback and GTM Sportswear Athlete of the Week. Joseph graduated co-valedictorian and received KU’s Summerfield Scholarship. He is the son of Gregory, p’85, and Lisa Andrews Flax, p’85. His maternal grandfather is David Andrews, e’49. Joseph joins his sister, Katherine, at KU.

Joe Fritzlen will perform swimmingly in his new classes after qualifying for

Missouri’s state swim competition. At Rockhurst High School, he was a member of National Honor Society, an Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction and Academic All-American. Tamara Gaynes brings a long list of academic accolades to KU’s School of Engineering. At Blue Valley Northwest High School, she participated in the Center for Advanced Professional Studies and volunteered with youth court, which helped her earn the Presidential Community Service Award. Other praise for this Overland Park native includes the Lifetime Mathematics Achievement Award, Excellence in Advanced Placement Calculus Award and recognition as a Kansas Designated State Scholar. Tamara is the daughter of Stuart Gaynes, m’90, and Marcy Stonefield Gaynes, c’84. Her maternal grandmother is Sue Stonefield, ’80.

Connor Grantham comes to KU flexing his muscles—and his academic ones, too. He had plenty of training

on the wrestling, football and weight lifting teams at Blue Valley West High School. Connor’s wrestling won regional championships, and classroom smarts earned him recognition as All-Academic First Team, Eastern Kansas League Scholar Athlete and Advanced Placement Scholar with Honor. Connor is the son of Aaron, c’87, m’91, and Sheila Dillon Grantham, p’89. His KU grandparents are Jared, m’62, and Carol Grantham, ’88, and Kathleen Whalin Dillon, l’80.

James Grinter already proved he’s among the fastest swimmers in the state; now he’ll take on the KU School of

Engineering. As a member of the Manhattan High School swim team, he was a four-time state qualifier and swam on the Centennial League Championship Team in 2009. James also played drums and clarinet for the marching and symphonic bands, and received the highest rating at the state choir competition. James is the son of Mark, c’84, and Helena Orazem Grinter, e’83. His KU grandparents are James, c’58, and Mary Brown Grinter, ’59.

Joe Gronniger joins the Jayhawk family as a KU Summerfield Scholar. At Topeka’s Hayden High School, he was named a Kansas Honors Scholar and earned the Pusitz

scholarship for graduating in the top 10 of his class. He played baseball and soccer, participated in National Honor Society and Future Business Leaders of America, and earned the Hayden Award for scholarship, leadership and citizenship. Joe’s maternal KU line includes his mother, Kim Newton Gronniger, g’83, and his grandparents Otto, l’75, and Rosa Lee Murphy Newton, MSW’02.

Michelle Holland is excited for a new challenge as she pursues a chemical engineering degree. At Hutchinson High School, she was a leader in Student

Council and National Honor Society, and qualified for the state tournaments in tennis and swimming. She was elected senator at Girls State and is a Kansas Honor Scholar. Michelle follows her siblings Michael, b’09, and Christie to the Hill. Their paternal lineage includes their father Mark Holland, b’75, and grandmother Dorothy Heaps Holland, c’37.

Alan Hornbaker marches to a different beat this year. At Lawrence Free State High School, he led his section in the symphonic and marching bands, and earned top score in the Kansas State Band Solo Contest. Alan was a member of the track, tennis and soccer teams, and won first team in All Sunflower League, Central Region and All State. He is the son of Thomas, c’73, g’75, and Shelly Buxton Hornbaker, ’83. His paternal grandparents are Allison, ’60, and Arlabel Stewart Hornbaker, g’68. Alan’s sister, Jaime, j’08, preceded him on the Hill.

Beck Johnson’s keen mind for business will take him far on Mount Oread and beyond. During his senior year, he was elected Kansas DECA president at the state conference and competed at the national level. He also started a profitable business detailing cars. At Shawnee Mission East High School, he was on the track, football and basketball teams, and traveled to Austria and the Czech Republic to sing with the school chamber choir. Beck’s parents are Bryan, b’76, and Linda McKie Johnson, ’78. His maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Merriman McKie, attended KU with the class of 1955.

KU will be par for the course for Rachael Kerz. Hailing from Springfield, Ill., she played varsity golf for Sacred Heart Academy and was selected as Central State Eight all-

conference. She volunteered with the American Diabetes Association, St. Agnes Auction and Farmer Photography. Rachael’s Jayhawk lineage includes her mother, Heidi Bloxdorf Kerz, c’83, and grandparents David Ross, c’56, m’60, and Ann Poirier Bloxdorf, b’57.

Ali Kimura has a new goal in sight—a KU degree. For four years, she played varsity soccer for Shawnee Mission South High School, and received the Offensive Player Award in 2010. She was selected for the All-Sun and All-Sunflower teams all four years. A native of Overland Park, Ali joins her brother Kyle on Mount Oread. Their parents are Stephen Kimura, m’86, and Maureen Sheehan, m’87. Ali’s grandfather Charles Kimura, ’69, was the first family member on the Hill.

Holly Lafferty will fine-tune her study habits this year as a Mount Oread Scholar. With nine years of viola experience, she harmonized with the Shawnee Mission

East High School orchestra. She also participated in cross country, track, German Club and Student Council, which she served as treasurer. A Fairway native, Holly traveled to Tijuana, Mexico, to do mission work with her church and Esperanza International. She joins her sister, Frances, on the Hill. Their maternal Jayhawk lineage continues with their mother, Cindy Morgan Lafferty, j’76, l’81, and their late grandfather Ray Morgan Jr., ’46.

Ryan Libel packed his golf clubs and crossed the state line for his freshman year. As a student at Missouri’s Springfield Catholic High School, he played on the basketball and golf teams, and qualified for the state golf tournament. Throughout high school, Ryan volunteered with Relay for Life and Big Brothers Big Sisters. He is the son of Roy, c’81, m’86, and Terri Topping Libel, b’81. His grandfather Lambert Libel received a KU business degree in 1938.

Chelsea Lund will be cheering loud and clear for the ’Hawks. At Eudora High School, she received All-American and National Cheerleading Association awards. She also participated in Environmental Club and Future Business Leaders of America, and now pursues a journalism degree in strategic communications. Chelsea joins her sister Sasha, a junior at KU. They are the daughters of Kevin, c’88, l’92, and Bickell Pratt Lund, c’89. Chelsea’s paternal Jayhawk lineage continues with her grandparents George, a’55, and Jann Duchossois Lund, d’55.

Ciara Malone fought for human rights and graduated from Shawnee Mission Northwest High School with an International Baccalaureate degree.

She was a member of Amnesty International and volunteered in the Johnson County Youth Court, acting as court prosecution and defense representative. She also participated in the Kansas Science Olympiad and served as co-president of Math Club. Ciara joins her siblings David, Elliot and Willow at KU. Their parents are Shawn Malone, c’95, and Heather Gambrell, c’01. Ciara’s paternal line extends to grandparents Clifford, c’50, l’52, and Eleanor Brown Malone, c’49.

Alexandra Martin sings the alma mater with perfect pitch. At Highland Park High School in

Dallas, she lent her voice to the Lads and Lassies Choir and earned superior ratings in the University Interscholastic League solo/choral competitions. She traveled on a choir tour to Nashville and San Francisco, and also participated in a three-week cultural immersion program in Siena, Italy. Alexandra is the daughter of Glen, c’73, g’75, and Kristyn Benage Martin, d’77. Her KU grandparents are Glen, m’49, and Alice Brown Martin, f’42.

Erin McFarland boasts an impressive variety of high school honors. At Olathe Northwest High School, she played on the Raven Pride

marching, concert and jazz bands, and was a member of the Tri-M Music Honor Society. A four-year varsity swimmer

and golfer, she led both teams as captain. Erin proved her smarts in the classroom, earning membership in National Honor Society and recognition as a Kansas Honors Scholar. Andrew Meier is as comfortable on stage as he is at a drafting table. The Olathe East High School graduate completed the 21st Century Environmental Design Program and now enters KU’s School of Architecture, Design and Planning. He sang in the high school chorale choir for four years and performed in Les Miserables. Outside of school, Andrew harmonized with the Kansas City Heart of America Barbershop Chorus. His parents are Gerald, e’88, and Christina Fortino Meier, n’91. His KU grandfather is John Fortino, b’57.

Looking through a camera lens is natural for Max Mikulecky. He has been shooting since he was 12 and has won numerous awards. Most recently he was honored

for his photography at Carnegie Hall as one of 15 national Gold Medalists for the top senior portfolios in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. Max also was photo editor of Blue Valley North’s newspaper and was named Outstanding Senior Artist. He is the son of Susan Pott Mikulecky, f’80, and grandson of Thomas Pott, a’57, and Kathleen Eisenbiese Pott c’57.

Stuart Mitchelson swings into action on the Hill. He played football and basketball at Pittsburg High School and especially shined on the golf course, earning a medal at the 2A state tournament and a spot on the Crawford-Neosho-Cherokee League team. Stuart joined National Honor Society and volunteered with the Special Olympics. He follows his brothers, James, c’10, and John, to the Hill. Their parents are John, b’80, l’83, and Beverly Ramsey Mitchelson, d’81. Stuart’s grandfather, Fred Mitchelson, b’46, l’49, began the KU tradition.

New classes shouldn’t intimidate William Nulton, who graduated from Rockhurst High School as a Commended National Merit Scholar. He was chosen as a leader

for the Kairos retreat and traveled on mission trips around the country. William also helped the lacrosse team win the Missouri state championship his senior year with skills inherited from his great-grandfather, Carnie Smith, d’33, who played football for KU. William’s paternal lineage also includes his grandfather William Nulton, c’53, l’58, and his father, Carnie Nulton, c’81, m’85. He joins his sisters Mary and Sally on the Hill.

Elizabeth Parker first visited Allen Field House when she was four months old, and has been rooting for the Jayhawks ever since. At Olathe East High School, she was a

member of the French National Honor Society and the Belle Chanson women’s choir. She served on the Junior Board of Directors for the Silver Blades Figure Skating Club, and earned gold medals at the Heart of America Invitational, the Pony Express Open and Omaha Winterfest. Elizabeth is the daughter of Brett Parker, e’87, g’99, and the granddaughter of Keith Parker, c’61.

Sarah Parrish found her ideal college in her own backyard. A Lawrence native and graduate of Free State High School, she was on the basketball, soccer and cross country

teams. She also participated in National Honor Society and FYI leadership club. Sarah’s grandparents Robert, b’50, and Mary Pollock Parrish, ’50, began the KU family tradition. Her father is Robert Parrish, b’79.

Neil Phillips runs headlong into new challenges on the Hill. As part of the Manhattan High School soccer team, he received the Iron Man Award and was named

Most Valuable Player in 2009. He coached a children’s team in the Little Apple Soccer Club and helped with the Micro Soccer Camp. Neil volunteered at the Flint Hills Free Clinic, received the KU Freshman Achievement Scholarship and is a Kansas Honor Scholar. His brother, Nathan, welcomes him to KU. They are the sons of Debra Doubek-Phillips, m’86. Herbert, c’53, m’56, and Lucille Doubek, assoc., are Neil’s grandparents.

Matthias Reiber continues his sporting life as he pursues a degree in athletic training. At Lawrence High School, he played soccer and helped manage the girls’ soccer

team. He twice competed at the state diving competition, and honed his skills on the rugby field with the Junior Jayhawk team. Matthias is the son of Elizabeth Reiber, c’75, g’77. His grandmother Joan Lenzen Reiber received a graduate degree in 1972, and his grandfather Fritz Reiber taught graphic design at KU until his retirement.

Amanda Rixey brings perfect pirouettes to the University Dance Company. A Leawood native, she attended summer ballet intensives in Kansas City, Austin and Chicago, and earned the Patricia Joyce Ellis Art and Dance Scholarship. During her years at St. Thomas Aquinas High School, she volunteered with Turnstyles Thrift Store, Operation Breakthrough and St. Luke’s Hospital. Amanda is a Mount Oread Scholar and Kansas Honor Scholar. Her parents are Robert, ’82, and Mary Delich Rixey, b’81. She is the granddaughter of Norton Rixey Sr., e’47.

Lindsay Rooker will hit the ground running this fall after leaving the Shawnee Mission East High School cross country and track teams. Not one to neglect her studies, she was a member of National Honor Society, National Art Honor Society and Junior Classical League. Lindsay is the daughter of Tom, c’86, and Melissa Brown Rooker, f’86. Her KU grandparents are the late Edwin Rooker, ’54, and Peedee Brown, c’88.

Abby Row is jumping for joy at becoming a Jayhawk. She spent four years as captain of the varsity gymnastics team at Shawnee Mission North High School. She also was a cheerleader and pole-vaulter, and joins the KU track and field team this year. The Merriam native participated in

Student Council, National Honor Society and a variety of community service organizations. She joins her sister, Molly, at KU. Their parents are Daniel, c’79, and Marla Higley Row, n’83. Austin Schroeder scored numerous goals as soccer team captain and a leader in academics at Independence High School, where he graduated among the top 10 in his class and was a member of National Honor Society. A member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, he was named to all-region teams in soccer and earned varsity letters in tennis and basketball. He led the Future Business Leaders of America chapter as president and was an officer in the science and Latin clubs. His brother, Sam, is a KU junior. They follow their parents, Thomas, b’78, and Deborah Rider Schroeder, c’79, d’80, to the Hill. Their maternal grandmother is Barbara Burnham Rider, g’71.

Joseph Segraves will be sure to cover his bases as he chooses which degree to pursue. At Olathe East High School, he excelled in the classroom and on the baseball field. His

brother Andrew received a business degree in 2008, but KU’s education and meteorology programs have piqued Joe’s interest. His paternal Jayhawk lineage continues with his father, Steven Segraves, b’82, m’86, and grandfather, Carl Segraves, ’60.

Andrew Shaw comes to KU seeking the stage. At Shawnee Mission Northwest High School, he sang in the chamber, a capella and men’s choirs, was a member of the orchestra, and performed in the Repertory Theatre and Thespian Troupe #888. He also sang with the Kansas Music Educators Northeast District and State Honor Choir. Andrew joins his brother Daniel on the Hill. Their parents are Greg, e’82, and Pamela Winn Shaw, c’82, m’86. Andrew’s grandfather Neale Shaw, e’49, began the KU legacy.

Shauna Stagner hopes for no curve balls in her pursuit of a KU degree. Hailing from Grapevine, Texas, she played varsity softball for Colleyville Heritage High School. She

was a member of National Honor Society and Student Council, and volunteered at Ft. Worth Day Center for the Homeless. Shauna is the daughter of Murray, j’78, and Lana Bowles Stagner, c’76, g’79. Her maternal grandparents are Buddy, b’64, and Creta Bowles, assoc.

Allison Voorhees leads the way on a campus her family knows well. A graduate of Lenexa’s St. James Academy, she was a Catholic Retreat leader and a house leader in

Student Council. She also coached volleyball at a local junior high school, taught Vacation Bible School and served as a peer mentor. Allison’s KU lineage began with her maternal grandparents, Bill Hamm, d’59, g’66, and Betsy Lyon Hamm, ’61. Her mother is Amy Hamm Voorhees, ’84.

Adam Wesche hails from North Carolina, where he made a

name for himself on the soccer field and the golf course. At Northern Nash High School, he was selected for the Big East All-Conference team and was named player of the year twice. On the fairway, he helped his team reach finals at the North Carolina 3A state championship. A native of Rocky Mount, he traveled with the Englewood Presbyterian Church on two mission trips. Adam’s sister, Kristen, d’08, preceded him at KU. Their Jayhawk line continues with their parents Jeff, c’79, and Anita Johnson Wesche, d’81, and grandfather Richard Johnson, ’50.

Jamie Winters packed her spirit and pep for her move to Mount Oread. She cheered on the squad at Olathe East High School and served as captain her senior year. She also was an officer for National Honor Society and Youth Congress. Her brother Jake welcomes her to the Hill as she pursues a degree in journalism. Paul Wolff marches on to pursue his interests in business and marketing. At Shawnee Mission East High School, he was part of the Lancer Drumline for four years, served as senior class secretary, and was a member of the International Club and Link Crew. He also belonged to Business Professionals of America and placed third in the state for Human Resources Management.
