Doug Beach formed the publishing com-pany bearing his name in 1975. As Directorof Jazz Studies for over 30 years, hisElmhurst College (IL) Jazz Band regularlyappears with such greats as Clark Terry,Diane Schuur, Nicholas Payton, Pete

Christlieb, Lee Konitz, Louie Bellson, and Bobby Shew.

Dave Hanson studied at SouthwesternOklahoma State University (B.M.), ArizonaState University (M.M.), and at theEastman School of Music’s Arranger Labs(NY) with Rayburn Wright and MannyAlbam. He is a professional jazz pianist

and teaches at the Lamont School of Music at theUniversity of Denver (CO). Much of his time is spentwriting music for commercials and industrial films.

Matt Harris is in great demand as akeyboardist, jazz writer and clinician. Aftercompleting his undergraduate degree atthe University of Miami (FL), and hismasters degree at the Eastman School ofMusic (NY), he toured with Maynard

Ferguson and Buddy Rich. Both leaders performed andrecorded his charts; several are featured in the KendorJazz Catalog. Today Matt serves as Director of JazzStudies at California State University-Northridge.

Allan Horney is Professor of Tromboneand Jazz Studies at Eastern Illinois Univer-sity in Charleston. During his tenure asDirector of Jazz Studies at EIU, the EIUJazz Ensemble won a Downbeat DB awardand released its first CD “Eastern Time

Zone” in 1994. Mr. Horney holds degrees from IndianaState University and the University of Illinois and hasbeen a member of the EIU faculty since 1974.

Jeff Jarvis, Director of Jazz Studies atCalifornia State University Long Beach, haswritten for and/or performed with LouRawls, Doc Severinsen, Joe Williams,Louie Bellson and more. He has recordedsix albums as a solo artist (trumpet), and

serves as Kendor's jazz editor.

Tom Kubis is a renown composer/arranger, woodwind player, recording artistand band leader. He has playedsaxophone with such jazz greats as FrankRosolino, Bill Watrous, Arturo Sandoval,Jack Sheldon, Pete Christlieb and Louis

Bellson. In addition to his writing for film and television,Tom's music exemplifies the contemporary big bandsound. His playing, writing and sequencing skills havetaken him all over the world for concerts and clinics.

Tom Matta has served on the faculty atDePaul University since 1995. He hasperformed (bass trombone) and recordedwith an array of talents including theWoody Herman Orchestra, the FrankMantooth Jazz Orchestra, and leads his

own Tom Matta Big Band in Chicago (IL).

Pete McGuinness has been a New YorkCity-based jazz trombonist, composer/arranger and vocalist since 1987. He hasperformed with The Woody HermanOrchestra, Lionel Hampton, Jimmy Heath,and the Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra,

and appears on many jazz CDs. His big band playsregularly in the NYC area, and Pete also serves asProfessor of Jazz Arranging at William PatersonUniversity and as a clinician for the Conn-Selmerinstrument company.

Sammy Nestico wrote for Count Basie for17 years, and directed the USAF Airmen ofNote and the Marine Band’s White HouseOrchestra. He has also arranged andconducted recording projects for BingCrosby, Sarah Vaughan, Frank Sinatra,

Barbra Streisand, Natalie Cole, and others.

Andrew Neu is a saxophonist/woodwind player, composer, arranger andrecording artist. He regularly tours withBobby Caldwell. A graduate of TempleUniversity, he has also performed with theCurtis Institute of Music Orchestra, the

Les Sabina is Professor of Music at St.Bonaventure University in upstate NewYork. He has received awards from IAJE,ASCAP, and the Performing RightsOrganization of Canada. As a saxophonist,he has performed with Dizzy Gillespie, Joe

Williams, Della Reese, and others.

Maria Schneider has conducted over 100different groups in over 30 countries. She’smost widely known for the Maria SchneiderOrchestra founded in 1992. She has writtenfor Toots Thielemans, the Carnegie HallJazz Orchestra, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Los

Angeles Philharmonic Association, and numerous othergroups, receiving 8 Grammy nominations and 2 Grammyawards.

George Shutack has been writing forDoug Beach Music since 1978. In additionto being a staff writer, he makes manydecisions regarding the company’s musicaldirection. When he is not writing music, heworks for an aeronautics company, main-

tains the Kendor website, and pursues his interest inarchitecture.

Doug Stone received his bachelor’sdegree from Northern Illinois University.Stone also led the university’s top comboas well as his own groups featuring hisoriginal works. In 2004-2005 Doug touredwith Maynard Ferguson and the Big Bop

Nouveau and has led his own groups in the Chicagoarea. Currently a student at the Eastman School ofMusic (NY), he is working on a master’s degree in jazzperformance and music education.

Carl Strommen teaches composition andarranging at the C.W. Post Campus ofLong Island University (NY). He is a gradu-ate of the City College of New York andstudied composing/arranging with MannyAlbam, Rayburn Wright and Stephan

Wolpe.

Gene Thorne played in the sax section ofthe U.S. Army Jazz Ambassadors (1975 -2009). He attended the University of Miami(FL) from 1972 to 1975, later earning hisBM degree in Performance from CatholicUniversity and a MM in composition from

the University of Maryland. Gene is now active as aclinician and freelance musician in the Baltimore-Washington area.

Mike Tomaro, formerly with the ArmyBlues Jazz Ensemble, is Director of JazzStudies at Duquesne University in Pittsburg(PA). He has recorded four CDs under hisown name and has appeared on manyothers as arranger and/or performer. He

co-authored “Instrumental Jazz Arranging – AComprehensive and Practical Guide.”

Bob Washut is Professor of Music at theUniversity of Northern Iowa, where he hasserved as Director of Jazz Studies (1980-2002) and of the award-winning UNI JazzBand One. An accomplished composer/arranger, he has received numerous

commissions from college and high school jazzensembles, professional jazz artists, and symphonyorchestras.

Gregory Yasinitsky is a RegentsProfessor of Music and Director of theSchool of Music at Washington StateUniversity in Pullman. He has written forClark Terry, Dave Liebman, and the USAFAirmen of Note, and has appeared as a

saxophonist with Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, RayCharles, Randy Brecker, and many others.

Bret Zvacek has performed with KennyWheeler, The Woody Herman Orchestraand other top artists. He has written for theBasie Orchestra, the Army and Air Forcejazz ensembles, and the UNT One O’ClockLab Band. Currently he is Director of Jazz

Studies at the Crane School of Music in Potsdam (NY).
