(Festival Now through end of October marks our Annual Appeal. For the next six months we will be asking members to help the Society financially. The response to last year’s Appeal was very positive – many Society members contributed what they could to help maintain the Society’s quality programs. Youth programs are foremost projects of your Society. Examples include helping Mission Bay HS with its very accomplished Preservationists Jazz Band, working with Roosevelt Middle School and other San Diego school projects to promote music programs, sending promising young musicians to jazz camp, monthly jazz workshops and the Annual Adult Jazz Camp As we continue planning our 36th Annual San Diego Jazz Fest, it is most gratifying to know there are so many of you willing to help “keep the music alive” by your financial contributions as well as your time and talents. Once again we ask for your financial support to help continue the work of your Society. With rising costs, especially transportation, hosting a quality festival continues to be a challenge. Your contribution could help sponsor a Festival band or musician, help promote our education and youth programs, or you may choose to provide an unrestricted general donation. Continued from back pageKaiser . . .recorded with Fats Waller and hisBuddies, with an impromptu group ledby Louis Armstrong (“Knockin’ aJug”) and with a specially-assembledversion of McKinney’s Cotton Pickersthat also featured Coleman Hawkins,Waller, Benny Carter and other jazzgiants. Marshall’s crisp press rolls, swinging brushwork, steady time onthe bass drum and well-played chokecymbal were terrific additions to theCotton Pickers’ rhythm section.

In the early ’30s, he led the Czars ofHarmony, and substituted for SonnyGreer (with Duke Ellington) and LeroyMaxey (with Cab Calloway) amongothers. Marshall also participated inanother all-star type of recording in1933 when British Bandleader SpikeHughes assembled a dazz l ingensemble that included Henry “Red”Allen, Dickie Wells, Benny Carter andColeman Hawkins. Two years later hedrummed on a Wingy Manonerecording with a personnel that is sureto raise collectors’ eyebrows, as itincluded both Artie Shaw and JellyRoll Morton! Marshall continuedleading his own band for three years, then went to Europe with Bobby Martinand his Orchestra. While overseas,he recorded with Martin and one ofthe sides (“Make Believe Ballroom”)featured the drummer on a flashy solothat bears a striking resemblance toChick Webb’s solo playing.

Back in New York, Marshall filledin for Webb, whose health wasdeteriorating, and also played withEdgar Hayes’ Orchestra. During the1940s he demonst ra ted a grea tversatility — playing swing styledrums with Lionel Hampton and a moretraditional sound in bands led by BunkJohnson, Wild Bill Davison and ArtHodes. Marshall’s playing on theJazz Record Six recordings with Hodesindicates that he would have been agood fit with the All-Star Stompers onRudi Blesh’s “This is Jazz” broadcastsand also with the Eddie Condon-ledensembles broadcasting from TownHal l and the Ri tz Thea te r .Unfortunately, he was not asked to

play for either of these series. In December, 1947, Marshall

traveled to Chicago to record with aband co-led by Sidney Bechet andMezz Mezzrow. The other drummerswho played on the Mezzrow-Bechetrecord series were “Big Sid” Catlettand Baby Dodds, but Marshall’splaying does not suffer in comparison.

After returning to New York,

Marshall played one final engagementat Jimmy Ryan’s before he died onJan. 3, 1948 as a result of severe foodpoisoning, complicated by pneu-monia. Later, when the Mezzrow-Bechet sides were released, one sidewas fittingly titled “Kaiser’s LastBreak.” That recording is a good send-off for a wonderful drummer whoshould be much better known!
