The UNCW Summer Jazz Workshop
PROCEDURES, REGULATIONS, EMERGENCY AND GENERAL INFORMATION
I. a) Orientation Procedures Check-in will occur on Sunday in the lobby of the Cultural Arts building, followed by an orientation
meeting for parents and students in the Beckwith Recital hall (see enclosed schedule). At this time youwill become acquainted with the staff and briefly tour the area you will be using during the week. Adaily itinerary will be presented to you and your parents(s) at this time. On-campus residence check-inwill be immediately following the orientation. Theory, improvisation, and ensemble audition placements
will be immediately after dinner.
b) Residence Hall Procedures: Residence hall check-in will be immediately following the orientation (see above). At this time you
will receive your room key in order to get established in your room (please note that a $30 room keydeposit will be collected by the campus residence staff at check in and returned to theparticipant at check out upon receipt of the key). Please count your linen to be sure you have twosheets, pillow and case, two bath, two hand, and two face towels. If any item is missing, notify a staffperson immediately so you will not be charged for that item at Sunday checkout. There will be a $5charge per piece of missing linen to be paid during Friday checkout.
After you check in, any changes you feel are absolutely necessary (concerning your room locationor roommate) can be discussed with the Jazz Workshop Director after Sunday dinner. You may not
change your room or exchange keys with anyone without the approval of the Director (who must keep awritten record of each room occupant).
You will return to your residence hall between 9:00-10:00 each night with lights out at 10:00 PM.You will rise each day at 7:00 AM and be ready to go to the cafeteria for breakfast by 7:30 AM. All ofthe workshop's activities will be in the Cultural Arts building.
Parents should meet students at 6:00 P.M. on Friday for checkout (load luggage, return room keys,and pay for lost room keys, linen and/or deliberately damaged equipment).
II. a) General Regulations All UNCW Jazz Workshop students will be under the supervision of the UNCW Jazz Workshop staff
from 2:00 PM Sunday, until after the final concert on Friday night and the Director and staff will beresponsible for each student's well-being.
Students are expected to adhere to their itinerary (which may vary slightly due to rehearsal andconcert scheduling) without exception (except during cases of injury or illness).
b) Residence Hall Regulations: While in residence hall, students must adhere to an open-door policy when socializing. No room
visitation with closed doors is allowed. Students may not invite anyone not connected with the JazzWorkshop onto their floor or into their room at any time for any reason. At 10:00 PM, staff will checkeach room to be sure students are ready for bed and students have locked their residence hall rooms.
University police will lock all outside residence hall doors at 11:00 PM nightly. Once students are infor the night they may not leave their floor or the residence hall itself. There can never be more thantwo students (designated roommates) sleeping in a room. Any problems or concerns at any time must

be addressed to the staff. Students will become acquainted with the staff's room location and nighttimeemergency procedures during orientation.
The student and/or parent must make travel arrangements. UNCW does not have residence hallspace or adult supervision available prior to check-in or following checkout. Early arrivals or late stay-overs may make arrangements in advance with the nearby motels (Comfort Inn, 910-791-4841)
c) Infractions of RegulationsIf a Jazz Workshop student does not adhere to the procedures and regulations listed here, their
parent will be called and appropriate actions taken. If it is deemed necessary to expel a student fromthe Jazz Workshop, no refund or partial refund will be granted. If a student is expelled, theirparticipation in all activities will cease immediately and parents will be required to make arrangementsfor their child to leave the Jazz Workshop and UNCW.
Also, please keep in mind that equipment provided (i.e., baritone saxophones, etc.) for your use, aswell as the living area assigned, should be treated appropriately. If the staff observes a studentdeliberately abusing either one of the above, the student will be charged a fee accordingly, and it is tobe paid at the Friday checkout.
III. Emergency Information a) Students may be contacted during business hours (8:00 AM – 5:00 PM) by calling the UNCW
Department of Music (910) 962-3390 or the Public Service and Continuing Studies office (910) 962-3195. State the student's name and the phone number and time they can return your call. We will beable to tell you where the student is at the time of your call and what time they will be able to returnyour call. We will then get your message to the student and staff. Between 5:00 PM and 8:00 AM, callthe University Police (910) 962-3184 and state the student's name, their residence hall, and the phonenumber the student should call to reach you.
b) In case of an injury or illness that requires treatment other than application of basic first aid, the studentwill be treated appropriately and taken to the nearest medical facility for medical attention. Parent(s)will be contacted via phone numbers listed on the student's registration form. Actions will be takenaccording to parent's wishes. A formal accident/illness report will be filed with the UNCW Safety Office.UNCW does not carry accident insurance for Jazz Workshop students.
IV. General Information a) There will be certain instruments available for student use based upon ensemble audition results at no
charge, including two baritone saxophones, two tenor saxophones, and one string bass. Students mayrent other instruments, if necessary, by contacting the Department of Music (910) 962-3390 to reservean instrument. Since the quantity of available instruments is limited, instruments will be reserved on afirst-come, first-served basis. The rental deposit fee for instrument use during the week is $50 andshould be paid at the time of orientation check in.
b) Lockers will be available for on-campus students needing to secure their instruments overnight at nocharge. Students will need to supply the lock.
c) If a student must leave for any reason, no refund of any type will be issued.
d) It is advisable to leave valuable items such as jewelry at home. Items such as watches, cameras, andtape recorders will have to be your responsibility at all times.

Items To Bring
1. Instruments and accessories (i.e., reeds, valve oil, slide cream, water bottles for slides, extraguitar and bass strings, amplifier cables).
2. Guitarists and bassists should bring portable amplifiers. It is recommended that drummers bringtheir own cymbals. All amplifiers and drum accessories will be stored and locked in the rehearsalrooms during the week.
3. Pencil, notebooks, and manuscript paper.4. Pocket change for snack and refreshment machines and some spending money for students
interested in visiting the UNCW bookstore.5. Students may want to bring recorders to record classes for future study.6. All wind players should bring combination locks for overnight instrument storage in lockers.7. Concert attire: dark dress slacks and light collared shirt for the boys or girls; dark skirt or
dress, and/or light top for girls; dress shoes for everyone.
Residence Hall Item Check-list
1. Extra towels.2. A heavy blanket. Air conditioning in residence hall may get quite cool at night.
3. Toiletries: soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrush, comb, brush, hair dryer, deodorant, etc.4. Any medications you normally use. Special administration of medications should be brought to
the attention of the Director during Sunday orientation.5. An alarm clock.6. A container of clothes washing detergent if you plan to wash clothes.
UNCW cannot be responsible for personal items that may be stolen, damaged, lost or left on campus.

Ensemble Audition Information
The audition is designed to ascertain the student's proficiency on their instrument so as to place the student inthe ensemble that is best suited for the student's abilities. Be prepared to play the following for your audition:
1. Major scales, one octave (C, G, F, Bb, D, A, Eb scales), as well blues, and dorian modes (samekeys).
2. Sight-read3. Play a prepared piece of your choice (either a jazz solo transcription, an etude, or a concert
piece, such as all-state band solos).4. Drummers will need to demonstrate various styles (e.g., swing, Latin, Rock, or Funk).
5. Improvisation will be evaluated during the theory/improvisation session (see below).
Theory and Improvisation Placement
Placement tests in theory and improvisation are designed for the purpose of determining advanced placementin improvisation and theory. All students will take the theory placement test in order to determine their
appropriate entry level. Students who have no or little background in theory or improvisation will be placed inthe entry-level improvisation and theory classes. Advanced students will be asked to play two choruses of ablues in one of the following concert keys (C, F, or B-flat).
