Based in London and touring on four continents in 2013, The Swingle Singers have assembled some oftheir favourite music from home and abroad. All-vocal arrangements of songs from Turkey, Spain and Argentina sitalongside reimagined British pop from Elbow, Florence Welch and The Beatles.

For half a century, The Swingle Singers have pushed the boundaries of what the human voice can achieve. Their vocalagility and blend, combined with captivating showmanship, have thrilled audiences across the globe. Celebrating their50th anniversary in the 2013-14 season, today’s young and gifted Swingle Singers represent the group’s evolution frombaroque jazz pioneers to contemporary a cappella phenomenon.

The group’s history is a remarkable tale of renewal. In 1963, American-born Ward Swingle assembled a group ofParisian session singers to sing Bach’s keyboard music. The resulting album, Jazz Sebastian Bach, launched TheSwingle Singers to fame. Over five decades the group has sustained a level of international popularity beyond itsfounder’s wildest dreams, with each new singer bringing something fresh to the Swingle sound. The Swingle Singershave sung on the world’s most famous stages, from Ronnie Scott’s to La Scala. They have won 5 Grammy Awards,featured on the soundtracks of Sex and the City and Glee, and made over 50 recordings.

Six For SixKENNY WHEELER

Kenny Wheeler convened an all-star British band for this new album, recorded back in April 2008 at Bauer Studios inLudwigsburg, Germany. For the occasion, the Canadian-born, English by adoption, trumpet and flugelhorn player linedup Stan Sulzmann, on tenor and soprano sax, Bobby Wellins on tenor sax, John Taylor on piano, Chris Laurence ondouble bass and Martin France on drums.

This is a Kenny Wheeler, who, at the time of the recording, was almost 80 years old and yet still brilliant and elegant. Thealbum opens with a classic “call and response”, with wind and brass pursuing each other, calling to each other andinteracting (“Seven, Eight, Nine - Part 1” is the title of the track, the first of eight, all penned by the leader). After this wehear clear reference to music by Miles or arrangements by Gil Evans, with a Wheeler who puts himself on a par with ashis recording colleagues, choosing to not set himself up in a soloist role, but also not remain in the background, to let theothers improvise on his themes.

A new, precious stone in the monumental recordings of Wheeler, who has, by now, tackled all of the styles and phases ofBritish and European jazz, always managing to optimise the talents of his travelling companions.

With their fourth album "Running", the Brothers Wasserfuhr are now definitely standing on their own four feet. Steve Turre recalls, “when I was ten years old, I wanted to play violin. My dad said, 'Beginning violin sounds like a cat inthe alley. Pick a horn.'” It is probably safe to say that the jazz world has been immeasurably enriched because of thesenior Mr. Turre's dislike of the violin. His son, Steve, has won any number of Downbeat Critic's and Reader's Polls andhas been a fixture in the SNL TV band for nearly thirty years. He has, almost single-handedly squashed thetrumpet-saxophone front line monopoly and has circumnavigated the globe several times with his most recent foraysoverseas taking him to Russia and South Africa.

The most intriguing artists are those that continually seek new challenges. They grow and adapt. Guitarist/composer JoelHarrison is a musician who is never complacent, continually learning, yet always true to his own vision. Infinite Possibilityis Harrison's latest journey, compositions written for a 19 piece jazz orchestra. Like all of Harrison’s output, the music isat once contemporary and timeless.

The recording begins with “As We Gather All Around Her,” which is based on an Appalachian hymn Harrison had heardStanley Brothers do, and features a startling vocal from Everett Bradley. The haunting then rollicking “Dockery Farm” isinspired by Harrison’s trips to the Mississippi plantation where Charlie Patton and Howlin’ Wolf learned the blues. Thereis a wonderful moment in the middle where the three trombones and tuba freely improvise with Harrison, playful andmournful all at once. “Remember” is both tender and barbed, a tone poem with no improvisation, featuring vocalist LialaBiali.

“The Overwhelming Infinity of Possibility” is a bright, hopeful piece that begins with muted energy and builds to a raucousdensity, inspired by the works of György Ligeti and electric Miles Davis. The declaratory “Highway” is an inspiring, richpiece based on gospel and road song. The program concludes with “Blue Lake Morning,” a shimmering, warm piece thatflowers with Harrison’s blend of classical harmony and roots songcraft.

It takes time to develop a deep rapport within a jazz ensemble. Often in today's jazz community, this is not seen as costeffective, and as a result, jazz has become a scene of one-off gigs with minimal preparation and everyone reading themusic.

Fortunately, you can still find bands that invest the time to evolve as a unit. Trumpeter John McNeil and saxophonistJeremy Udden established Hush Point as a group that does just that. Also including bassist Aryeh Kobrinsky anddrummer Vinnie Sperrazza, Hush Point is a working and rehearsing ensemble, and on their new self-titled album, HushPoint, the group shows a cohesiveness of concept that is only achieved through hours of practice, performance andexperimentation. The wide stylistic range of their repertoire is immediately striking to the listener.

Yilian, a child prodigy, studied at home, in a capital which is a crossroads. Then she set off for Caracas: the orchestra,symphonies, meticulously learning the violin, an instrument that likes to rebel. She made her own destiny, far away fromher people, ending up in Switzerland to perfect her arpeggios. Strangely enough, it was here, right in the middle ofProtestant Europe, that she founded a quartet named after a Yoruba divinity: Ochumare. Ever since then, they’ve beendoing their best to reactivate the hybridised power of Latino jazz, by mixing in everything that, directly or indirectly, hasbeen through their hands.

A percussionist from Lausanne, Cyril Regamey, who everyone believes must be concealing his Caribbean origins. ACuban pianist, Abel Marcel, admired by Chucho Valdés, who brings together in a cadence heritages drawn from Frenchimpressionism and Black witch doctors. A Venezuelan bass player, David Brito, who has given his instrument a woman’sname; he anchors the group with his thirst for syncopations. And in the middle of these three guys, imperturbably, YilianCañizares doesn’t remain content with dispensing sweetness and light. She lights wildfires, incandescent mambos, withthe absolute mastery of a repertoire that takes from everyone without giving anything back to anyone.

Boris Vian, novelist, poet, song-writer, performer, did not have the time to enjoy his moment in the sun. It was not until,and partly because, he died aged just 39, that his songs began their inexorable rise to immortality. In France, he inspired various artists such as Jacques Higelin, and above all, Serge Gainsbourg, who always claimedVian was his main source of inspiration. The sevillana is a traditional Spanish dance from Seville (closely linked to flamenco) that is accompanied by a sungmelody, also known as a sevillana. Nowadays the sevillana is danced at ferias (annual local festivals) or during romerias(religious pilgrimages) in Spain (Seville, Jerez, Barcelona, etc.), but also in southern France (Arles, Nîmes, Dax,Mauguio, Béziers etc). Twenty pieces are presented on this album, each one chosen for its authenticity and for theimpact and meaning of its words (letras). Laurent Maltinti, known as ‘El Tempranillo’, is a singer and guitarist of Italianorigin, who now lives in Provence, where he is also well known for the wines he produces. ‘El Tempranillo’ is well-knownin the flamenco world for his strong, mature voice and his unusual flamenco guitar technique (toque).
