Do sonho à realidade: EscolaGerminare já funciona em São PauloComo previsto no planejamento estabelecido em 2009,

em 8 de fevereiro de 2010 começou a funcionar um dosprojetos educacionais mais inovadores de São Paulo - aEscola Germinare, criada e mantida pelo Grupo JBS.

Nem mesmo a chuva, que prejudicou o andamento dasobras, impediu que a Escola abrisse suas portas no início doano letivo, dentro do prazo legal.

Após um complexo processo seletivo que atraiu 1503jovens das escolas da zona sudoeste de São Paulo, realizadono segundo semestre do ano passado, os alunos efetuaram amatrícula, recebendo uniforme e material didático.

A Germinare atende, em 2010, 180 alunos de 6o e 7o

ano do Ensino Fundamental. Nos anos seguintes, ampliará afaixa de atendimento, até o final do Ensino Médio. Todosestudam em tempo integral, das 7h15 às 17h.

Toda a estrutura oferecida pela Escola já está emoperação, o que inclui os laboratórios de informática erobótica, lousas eletrônicas, a piscina semi-olímpica e oginásio poli-esportivo.

Rapidamente, os alunos se adaptaram ao ritmo muitoexigente, como é a proposta da Escola, e manifestam seuentusiasmo estudando muito - tanto é verdade que, ao finaldo primeiro bimestre, 25% dos jovens alcançaram médiasgerais acima de 8,0 e apenas 20% tiveram notas inferiores àmédia mínima, que requer 70% de aproveitamento.

As stated in the 2009 planning, as of February 8th2010, one of the most innovative educational projects ofSao Paulo created and maintained by the JBS Group - theGerminare School - began its activities.

Not even the heavy rain, which caused constructiondelays, was able to prevent the School from open its doorsto the students at the beginning of the school year.

During the second semester of last year, a complexselection process that attracted 1503 young adults from theSao Paulo's Southeast School districts took place and as aresult of it the selected students registered and receiveduniforms and school material in January of 2010.

Currently, 180 students from Middle School grades 6and 7 attend Germinare School. In the following years,Germinare plans to extend its activities in order to attendstudents up to High School Graduation. The students attenda full time program from 7:15 am to 5:00 pm.

The school complex is already in operation, and inclu-des computer and robotic laboratories, electronic blackboar-ds, semi-olympic size pool and a gymnasium capable ofhosting five different sports.

Very quickly the students adapted to the educationaldemands of Germinare and showed their motivation bystudying hard. That is proven by the fact that 25% of thestudents achieved a GPA over 8.0 and only 20% had gradesunder the minimum required GPA, which requires that thestudents to still achieve 70% of the credits taught.

Todos ho-menagearam os protagonistas da iniciativa do Instituto JBS,os 180 alunos da Escola Germinare, no primeiro dia de aula.

A abertura oficial foi comandada pela diretora do Insti-tuto JBS, Vivianne Batista Silveira, que afirmou serem os alu-nos os personagens principais da iniciativa. No discurso, Vivi-anne falou sobre o que os jovens alunos podem esperar daGerminare - transparência e compromisso com a qualidade -e também deixou claro que a Escola espera que os alunosdêem o máximo de si para aproveitar essa oportunidade.

Bernardinho, um especialista em liderança e motivaçãode jovens, encantou os alunos. Em sua fala, enfatizou que suacarreira vencedora como atleta e como técnico foi marcadanão só por talento, mas sobretudo pela grande disciplina pes-soal. Por fim, Joesley conversou informalmente com os alu-nos, lembrando passagens de sua vida e reiterando o compro-misso da JBS com o desenvolvimento da sociedade brasileira,por meio da Educação.

Além de todos os educadores e dos alunos, a cerimôniateve a presença de muitos convidados, que acompanham ahistória da JBS e o sonho de retribuir para a sociedade brasi-leiro as conquistas alcançadas pelo Grupo. Estiveram presen-

tes: Luis Trabucco Cappi, presidente do Bradesco, e os direto-res Sérgio Clemente e Norberto Berbedo; Tsunekiyo Hayashi,presidente da Construtora Toda, e os diretores Osvaldo Naga-sawa e Vanderlei Roasio; Ilona Becskeházy, diretora do Insti-tuto Ismart, as gerentes Maria Amélia Sallum e Inês França ea coordenadora GIovanaOhara; o arquiteto Paulo So-phia e a Ana Carolina Velas-co, do GIFE - Grupo de Insti-tutos, Fundações e Empresas.

The opening event for the first day of classes was simple andimpressive at the same time. Many business leaders such as thepresident of Bradesco bank, Luiz Trabuco Cappi; the president ofJBS, Joesley Baptista, the coach of the Brazilian volleyball teamBernardinho, and many others attended the event. Their presencewas an honor for the JBS Institute and for the 180 students thatattend the Germinare School.

The official opening event was hosted by the director of JBSInstitute Mrs. Viviane Batista Silveira, who made it clear for thestudents that they were the main players of the project and thatthey were starting to build theirs own history. During her speech,Viviane stated that the kids can be confident that Germinare iscommitted to giving them a quality education and having full trans-parency, she also made it clear that the school expects great dedi-cation from its students, whom are given this opportunity.

Bernardinho, a specialist on leading and motivating youngpeople, enchanted the students. During his speech he emphasizedthat his successful career as an athlete and as a volleyball coachwas not only because of talent but most of all by strong personal

discipline. At the end, Joesley had an informal conversation withthe students; reflecting on parts of his life and reinforcing JBS'scommitment to help develop the Brazilian society through edu-cation.

Besides all the students and the teachers, many guests whohave been following JBS' journey and its dream of giving back toBrazilian society the victory achieved by the JBS Group were pre-sent. The guests that attended the opening event were the follo-wing: Luis Trabucco Cappi, the president of Bradesco, and its di-rectors Sérgio Clemente and Norberto Berbedo; Tsunekiyo

Hayashi, the president of Toda Construction Company, andits directors Osvaldo Nagasawa and Vanderlei Roasio; IlonaBecskeházy, the director of Ismart Institute, and its managers MariaAmélia Sallum and Inês França and its supervisor GIovana Ohara;the architect Paulo Sophia and Ana Carolina Velasco, from GIFE -Institutes, Foundations and Companies Group.

In the days following this event, new surprises came up suchas an art and cultural performance presented by Bate Lata Group(in the picture).

São crianças, quase adolescentes. E se comportam como tal:brincam, correm pelo pátio, jogam fute-bol, nadam, já começam a viver os pri-meiros namoros, vivem plenamente suaidade. Mas isso não significa que o gostopelo aprender seja deixado de lado. Nosintervalos, a biblioteca está sempre cheia.Entre as brincadeiras, há sempre um tem-po para ler um novo livro. Após o almo-ço, dezenas de jovens ainda tem energiapara passar por oficinas de jornalismo,de xadrez ou damas.

Essa é a dinâmica que em poucotempo se criou na Germinare. Ao final do primeiro bimestre, é possí-vel ver que a Escola já criou sua identidade. Os alunos, vindos namaior parte da rede pública de ensino, manifestam com frequencia asatisfação com o cuidado que recebem. Basta ver o texto do alunoKevin, ao lado.

aluno, à tarde todos têm a possibilida-de de tirar dúvidas em uma programa-ção de estudos assistidos com os pró-prios professores.

Os pais, do mesmo modo, acre-ditam na proposta e se mostram bas-tante presentes, tanto nas reuniões for-mais, como nos eventos comunitários.Em recente apresentação de música,por exemplo, emocionaram-se ao ver aevolução dos filhos no aprendizado demúsica.

Por fim, os professores também trabalham de forma cada vezmais afinada com o projeto, utilizando os recursos tecnológicos dis-poníveis, aprimorando as estratégias de avaliação e, especialmente,imprimindo um ritmo de estudos rigoroso, mas, ao mesmo tempo,com todo o suporte necessário.

They are kids, almost adolescents. And theybehave as such, they play, run through the pa-tio, play soccer, swim and even begin their firstdating experiences, they are living their life tothe fullest. But that does not mean that theyleave the studies and the learning experiencebehind. During the breaks the library is alwayscrowded. Between play time there is alwaystime to read a new book. After lunch, many ofthe kids still have energy to participate in jour-

nalism workshops and chess and checkers activities.This is the dynamic that was created at Germinare and at the end of the first two

months of operating it is possible to see that the school already created its own iden-tity. The students, most of them from a public school background, often show theirappreciation regarding the care they receive and the quality of the school programs asdemonstrated by the letter from student Kevin, to the side.

Even if the all the students are not on the same pace during classroom activities,since they come from different backgrounds and schools, in the afternoon they allhave the chance to ask questions in a assisted studies program with their own profes-sors. The parents also believe in the school's goals and are very present, always atten-ding the formal school meetings and the community events. In a recent musical per-formance, for example, the parents were real emotional to see the development oftheir kids.

And at the end, the professors also work in a very integrated way with the project,using all the technological resources available, improving the evaluation strategiesand, specially, setting up a very rigorous curriculum with all the necessary support.

Quando decidiu assumir o desafio de dirigir o Instituto JBSe a Escola Germinare, Vivianne Mendonça Batista Silveira fezuma opção consciente de deixar a administração de setoresfinanceiros e administrativos do Grupo para mergulhar emum campo completamente novo - a Educação.

Lessons of LiveInterview with the director of the JBS Institute, Vivianne Batista

When deciding to take on the challenge of directing the JBSInstitute and the Germinare School, Vivianne Mendonça Batista Sil-veira made a conscious choice to leave the business sectors of finan-ce and administration of JBS Group to dive into a completely newfield - Education.

However, for her it has been a very satisfying journey, especi-ally on a personal's perspective. "It has been a great life experience.Besides my professional learning, here the human, business and edu-cational learning process is daily."

Following is a brief interview with Viviane regarding the mainsocial project of the Group.

Germinare News - Why did JBS decide to invest in a school?Why education?

Vivianne Batista - The JBS Group wishes to build a social pro-ject for the long term, but we only started developing it once wewere sure that it would be related to education. We believe thateducation is the most valuable investment for human beings and for

society. It is something that you take for your entire life and it isalso the true factor that can transform one's life.

Germinare News - What is the identity of the school crea-ted by JBS? From what observations did this project began?

Vivianne - Besides the social issues of our country and thedesire to give back to society all that we have been receiving, wealso face a daily challenge of finding recently graduated youngpeople with business experience. They are well educated kids butthey get lost on a corporate environment. Bearing that in mindwe created Germinare a school which its goal is to offer a strongeducational formation without forgetting the entrepreneur sideof it. That means to teach the student about the internal workin-gs of a company, with an overview of finance, marketing, andstrategy along with the entrepreneur spirit and initiative. At thesame time we decided to focus the work on talented young kids,boys and girls who have great potential but who would have noopportunity without a high standard education. That is why this

Queremos que saibam fazer suas esco-lhas e sejam os melhores naquilo que se propuserem a fazer.Que sejam, sim, empreendedores sempre, como empregadoou empregador. Mas sempre tivemos um norte que éa experiência de vida de nossa família e da JBS, por tudo o quepassamos, pelo know-how que adquirimos em 50 anos de his-tória. Germinare News - Como os funcionários da JBS e comooutras empresas do mercado tem visto a iniciativa?

Vivianne Batista - Os funcionários da JBS tem se orgulha-do muito desse projeto. O mercado também tem visto esseprojeto com muito bons olhos, pois nós, que vivemos no mundo

empresarial, sabemosda falta que falta umtrabalho educativo quenão seja apenas focadoem boas teorias, masnos desafios reais quevivemos.

Germinare News - Em que ponto da implantação o projetoestá? Como pode avaliar a iniciativa até o momento?

Vivianne Batista - Ainda estamos no começo. A Germinarecomeçou a funcionar em fevereiro. Mas tudo vem acontecen-do como prevíamos, e temos as melhores expectativas possí-veis. Ainda é difícil fazer uma análise, mas acredito que é umprojeto com capacidade total de atingir seus objetivos. O pro-jeto pedagógico está consolidado e todos - alunos, pais e pro-fessores -, caminham na mesma direção. Os próximos passosvirão a seu tempo. Mas sem dúvida, construir algumas escolaspelo país é o nosso sonho.

Germinare News - What are the returns that JBS expects?Vivianne - First of all, we want the generations who will at-

tend Germinare School to be the leaders of their own lives. We wantthem to learn how to make their own choices and to be the best inwhatever they decide to do. We want them to always be entrepre-neurs, rather or not they are employees or employers. However wealso want to give the Brazilian education system an experience thatcan contribute to raising the general quality of our schools. We re-ceived numerous letters from people saying that although their kidswere not selected on the process they now realize how important itis to invest in education.

Germinare News - How was the school model designed? Didyou visit other educational institutions?

Vivianne - We visited many educational institutions and scho-ols and were surrounded by great professionals who helped us buildGerminare. However, we were always guided by our family's life ex-perience and the experience with JBS, including all we have beenthrough and the know-how we developed in the 50 year of history.As an example, JBS established its business because we believed in

human quality, in the strength of a team that is more than greatprofessionals and great human beings. That is the same beliefs webrought to Germinare.

Germinare News - How does the JBS' employees and othercompany's employees see this initiative?

Vivianne - JBS' employees are very proud of this project, speci-ally the ones who get the chance to follow it closer. The market seesthis project as a very good initiative since we, who are a part of thebusiness world, know well the educational system that teaches onlygood theories but lacks focus in the real world challenges.

Germinare News - How do you analyze this initiative until now?Vivianne - We are still at the beginning. Germinare started to

operate in February. Everything has been happening as we plannedand we have great expectations. It is still hard to make an analysesbut I believe it is a project that can achieve all of its goals. The edu-cational project is very strong and everybody - the students, the te-achers and the parents - are all on the same page. The next steps willcome within the right time. We first want to see Germanire Sao Pau-lo well established and then we will think about extending this pro-ject. Without a doubt, our dream is to continue building more scho-ols in Brazil.

O primeirocertificado deempreendedor

Os alunos da Germinare receberam um certificado muito es-pecial: pela primeira vez em suas vidas, concluíram o primeiromódulo de um curso que trata diretamente de seu futuro - o Em-preendedorismo.

O curso segue a metodologia da Junior Achievement, o prin-cipal programa internacional de formação de jovens líderes. Nessaproposta, os professores são empreendedores, no caso altos exe-cutivos da JBS, que são capacitados e utilizam a programação de-finida pela Junior Achievement.

O primeiro módulo - Introdução ao Mundo de Negócios -focou nos aspectos básicos que serão retomados ao longo de todoo curso. Agora, os alunos aguardam o início do módulo seguinte,

na área de Finanças.Foi uma experiên-

cia muito rica para todosos envolvidos. Para o alu-no Vinícius Henrique, porexemplo, foi a chance desaber dos primeiros pas-sos para os negócios -tema do primeiro módu-lo. "A matéria me ajudou,pois no futuro que ter

minha própria empresa de jogos e animações 3D", lembra.Os executivos também aprenderam muito. "Aprendi que os

adolescentes estão sempre mais preparados para desafios maiorese nunca são passivos", diz o diretor da área jurídica do Grupo JBS,Francisco Assis e Silva. "Em algumas situações, eles nos surpreen-dem com observações que escapariam a muitos executivos", com-pleta Jenner Jon Lopes, diretor de TI.

A proposta vai ao encontro das linhas mais contemporâneasda Educação, que buscam aproximar o ensino da vida real. "Eugostaria de ter assistido aulas assim na minha época escolar. Asescolas formam seus alunos sem se preocupar com o exercício pro-fissional. No máximo, preparam empregados, e não empreendedo-res", diz Demetrius Nichele Macei, gerente da área tributária, queresume assim o próprio fundamento da iniciativa da JBS ao criar aGerminare.

The firstentrepreneur

certificateThe Germinare's kids received a very special certificate:

for the first time in their lives they finished the first phase of acourse that deals directly with their future - Entrepreneurship.

The course follows the Junior Achievement methodology,the main international program on forming young leaders. Ac-cording to the program the professors are entrepreneurs, inthis case senior executives from JBS, who are trained by anduse the lesson plans of the Junior Achievement program.

The first phase - Introduction to the Business World -focused on the basic aspects that will be recurrent throughoutthe course. Now, the students wait for the beginning of thenext phase, Finance.

It was a very rich experience for all that were involved.For the student Vinícius Henrique, for example, it was a chanceto learn the first steps to business - the subject of the firstphase. "The subject helped because in the future I want to havemy own company in the cartoon and 3D industry."

The executives also learned a lot. "I've learned that ado-lescents are always prepared for bigger challenges and theyare never lethargic," says the director of the JBS Group's legaldepartment, Francisco Assis e Silva. "In some cases, they sur-prise us with observations that many executives would notnotice", remarks Jenner Jon Lopes, IT director.

The proposal follows the contemporary education stylewhich seeks to reflect on preparing students for real life situa-tions. "I would like to have attended classes like these when Iwas in school. Schools teach their students but they are usu-ally not concerned about developing their professional future"says Demetrius Nichele Macei, manager of the tax department,his sentence sums up the basis of the JBS initiative for creatingGerminare.
