earn a free month! Two weeks ago, the JCC hosted a meeting for adults interested in a group trip to Israel. It was an opportunity for me to speak about my personal Israel experiences recalling the first of my 5 visits. Although each trip was special, that first visit was truly an amazing experience; and with each ensuing visit, I collected new memories both unique and different. From the climb up Masada to floating in the Dead Sea, to Shabbat at the Western Wall (Kotel) and shopping in Tel Aviv, every as-pect of each visit helped to cement my relationship with Israel. Over the years, the JCC has maintained strong ties with Israel sup-porting summer teen Israel experiences, hosting visiting entertainers and authors and even sponsoring young athletes from our sister city in Acco, who we invite to join our travelling delegation each summer when our athletes compete at the JCC Maccabi Games®. And although

it has been 22 years since my last visit, my personal Israel connection has not wavered. That’s why I am so excited that the JCC is sponsoring our first community trip to Israel this coming October 17-27, 2015, as part of our mission to inspire Jewish Journey’s and as a planned effort to strengthen and enhance our community’s relationship with Israel. The trip is designed to complement the types of experiences that appeal specifically to adults and will include both first time visitors and several returnees. We will explore a variety of interests from technology to the vibrant Israeli art scene, to Israeli cuisine, including a culinary workshop and a visit to a boutique winery in the Galilee. Trip participants will explore Jewish culture looking at the layers of history surrounding the Old City of Jerusalem and experience the spirituality most commonly associated with visiting the Old City of Jerusalem. We will discover the culture and nightlife of Tel Aviv; and we will travel to our sister city region in the Western Galilee where we will meet with members of our partnership community in the port city of Acco including an opportunity to visit an Is-rael Community Center and consider the notion of Jewish public space in Israel and how that relates to the Jewish space at our JCC. We encourage you to consider joining us for this unique and personal journey to Israel for what we hope will be a transformational experience! Trip details and highlights are listed below. Dates: OCT. 17 - 27, 2015Price: $4,500 includes:· double occupancy accommodations at four- or five-Star hotels· all ground transportation, roundtrip airfare from Newark Airport· a tour educator· site entry fees· daily breakfast and one additional meal each day· and more Trip Highlights:· Visit Tel Aviv, Israel’s most modern city· Journey through the Old City of Jerusalem· Visit the western Galilee and our sister city of Acco and the Matte Asher Community Center· Learn of the legendary story of the Masada fortress· Rejuvenate in the Dead Sea· Visit Yad Vashem, the historical museum of the Holocaust· Drive along Israel’s borders with Syria and Jordan discussing the changing realities in the Middle East· Cooking workshop in the Galilee· Wine tasting at a boutique winery· Visit the Hula Valley nature sanctuary· Jeep ride along the Golan Heights· Archaeological dig at Beit Guvri Whether you are a first time traveler or have experienced Israel many times, this opportunity is designed to provide an insider’s look at Israel – her history, her development and current events. Don’t miss out on a truly fabulous opportunity to Live Up!

Boeing-Boeing lands at The vexIt’s the 1960s, and swinging bachelor Bernard couldn’t be hap-pier: a flat in Paris and three gorgeous flight attendants, all of whom are engaged to him without knowing about each other. But Bernard’s perfect life flies into some rocky turbulence when his friend Robert comes to stay and a new and speedier Boeing jet throws off all of his careful planning. Soon, all three flight attendants are in town simultaneously, Robert can’t remember which lie he told to which person, and catastrophe looms. It is sure to be a bumpy ride. Grab your passports, fasten your seat belts, and save all the oxygen you can muster for The Vex’s next production, Boeing-Boeing.

The play, originally written in French by Marc Camoletti, but translated into English by Beverly Cross, was first staged in London in 1962, running for seven years. It was simul-taneously made into a film starring Jerry Lewis and Tony Curtis in 1965. Boeing-Boeing’s most recent stagings were in 2007 (West End, London) and 2008 (Broadway). Mark Rylance, who was cast in both productions as Bernard’s wrench-throwing friend, Robert, won a Tony Award in 2008 for Best Actor in a Play. He was nominated for an Olivier Award for the London staging. The play has been staged so many times that, in 1991, it was listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the most performed French play throughout the world.

When vex artistic director Ken Frazier was considering plays for the 2015-16 season, no matter how he laid it out, Boeing-Boeing was always part of the equation. it is a play Frazier has wanted to produce for several seasons, but either it didn’t quite fit into the overall feel of the season, or it wasn’t available to produce. This year, however, all the cards have fallen perfectly into place.

Omar Leos, who is currently the coordinator for Visual and Theatre Arts for SAISD after teaching theatre in the dis-trict, and who has directed shows around San Antonio, will be directing the play, which opens Thursday, August 20 and runs through Sunday, September 13. Tickets will go on sale beginning Monday, July 20. 2015-16 Season Passes are available for purchase now through September 13. Individual ticket prices for the new season are $22 (General Admission), $19 (JCC Members, Seniors, Military, Groups of 10+), and $16 (Students). Season Passes are $72 (General Admission), $68 (Seniors, Military), and $62 (JCC Members).

To purchase Vex Season Passes online, visit www.vexler.org. To inquire about the 17th Season, which also includes Bad Jews; The Diviners; and One Man, Two Guvnors, call The Vex Box Office at 210-302-6835.

We look forward to seeing you this season at The vex!

As our 2014/2015 program year winds down and Summer Camp is in full swing, we are grateful for the many ways you’ve supported YOUR JCC over the past years. From en-rolling in youth enrichment programs to contributing to fundraisers or simply taking a fitness class; every time you engage with us you are providing support. So, as we look to a new program year, we thought we would share a few ways for you to engage with other members of our J community:

· The Sheldon Vexler Theatre presents another outstand-ing season beginning in August with Boeing-Boeing! We en-courage you to attend the production if you’ve never been before, or consider purchasing a season pass if you’re al-ready a regular Vex-goer. You may purchase your season pass online at www.vexler.org. Tickets to Boeing-Boeing will go on sale July 20, and are available by calling 210-302-6835. Look for your Vex Theatre brochure in the mail this month!

· Summer Camp is going strong, yet there are still op-portunities to register for those last few weeks. Camps are offered for children in kinder through middle school and include everything from gymnastics to arts and crafts to a variety of sports and more. Learn more at www.jccsanan-tonio.org/camp and call the Camp Office for availabilities at 210-302-6859.

· Your Fall/Winter Program Guide should arrive in your mailbox by early August. Take a moment to review all the programs available to everyone – kids and adults. We hope you will participate in the programs you have come to know and love and we encourage you to try somthing new, too. Most classes and programs are available to view and register for online at www.jccsanantonio.org/register.

· Planning for our 2015 JCC Fall Fundraiser The Main Event is under way. We are looking forward to hosting this excit-ing event with local restaurants, live entertainment, and a silent auction all to benefit youth and senior services, scholarship programs and future projects through the Wal-ter and Reba Viner Charitable Fund. Be sure to save the date for Saturday, November 21!

These are just a few of the many ways to ‘Support the J’. And in addition to attending classes, participating in pro-grams and enjoying events, be sure to tag us whenever you share your JCC experience on your favorite social media platforms!

Support the J – a New year of opportunities!

Tzofim Friendship Caravan of israel Scouts Performance • July 17, 2pm

JCC / Holzman auditoriumFree & open to the Community

Out of 60,000 Tzofim (Israel Scouts) throughout Israel, only approxi-mately 60 are chosen annually for the Tzofim Summer Delegation. These selected 16 and 17-year-olds go through extensive interviews and inten-sive preparation before coming to the U.S. They have proven leadership experience, a broad knowledge of Israeli and Jewish history, a high level of scouting achievement, fluency in English and strong communication skills. Most of all, they have a love for their country and their people and a desire to share that love.

Delegates share their experiences and backgrounds with other counsel-ors and campers, teaching them about Israel’s culture and history. Their unique enthusiasm, energy and passion bring a joyful Israeli spirit to camp. Through this, tens of thousands of Jewish American children have gained deep exposure and a meaningful bond to Israel, its people and its culture.

a Perfect Night out for Famiies with Kids!

This musical romp through the joys and sorrows of being a child is hilarious. Children give lessons in such subjects as how to beg for a dog, how to torture your sister, how to act after being sent to your room and how to laugh hysterically. The pace is fast and the recognition instant.

“A musical revue for children that can also be enjoyed by the parents...A charming and witty score.” - Backstage

How to Eat Like a Child is based on the Viking book of the same name by Delia Ephron. The musical version began its life as an NBC prime time special starring Dick Van Dyke. It has enjoyed thousands of productions all over the the US, Canada and many other countries where kids smuggle their least favorite vegeta-bles to the garbage instead of eating them. Meet Zumba instructor Amy LermanMy name is Amy Le-rman. I am from St. Louis MO. In 1997 I came to Texas for college and decided I would stay! I went to the University of Texas at Austin for my Bachelor’s degree. Go Horns! After graduation in 2001, I left Texas briefly to com-plete a Master’s in

Speech Language Pathology at the George Washington University in Washington, DC. I am a play based group Speech Language Pathologist and have been working in public and private early childhood schools for the past eleven years.

My husband Marshall and I lived in Dallas for seven years and Houston for the last four years. We have two daughters; 6 year old Lyla and 16 month old Sunny.

We are thrilled to call San Antonio our new home and are so glad to have found membership and involvement at the Barshop Jewish Community Center. My ties and involment at the JCC have been present throughout my life. In St. Louis, I participated in any and every program available such as camping, swim team, and theatre. In my teens, I found employment at the JCC as a life-guard and camp counselor. In Dallas, we enrolled Lyla in camps, utilized the fitness facility, and I sat on the Board of Directors in the role of Day Camp Committee Chair. In Houston, we enrolled Lyla in preschool, camp, ballet, gymnastics, soccer, and so much more. Here in San Antonio, we have enjoyed camping, school, and a wide variety of athletics at the JCC. I have thoroughly enjoyed the group fitness program, and decided to be-come more involved as a Zumba instructor.

As they say in Zumba, “ditch the workout and join the party.” The movement is exactly that! In Zumba, you feel the music: Salsa, Merengue, Cumbia, Reggaeton, and more. If you are moving, if you are sweating, and if you’re shaking it - you are Zumba! I love to move and smile and sweat and shake - but I like it better when I can do so in the company of friends. So, let’s dance!

Try one of our Zumba classes Mondays and Fridays at 8am, Tuesdays and Thursdays at

5:30pm, and Saturdays at 10am!

Professional developmentThe week of June 1st, the JCC Block and Dreeben School for Young Children teachers had a fruitful week of professional development. Our concentration was on young children as capable and competent learners who construct knowledge through hands-on learning ex-periences.

Our teachers focused on building meaningful, respectful and authentic relationships be-tween the teacher and each child. Strategies to spotlight children’s strengths and their interests were discussed, as well as focusing on the child’s efforts rather than only their abilities. These themes were presented by Janice Dames from Region XX Educational Ser-vice Center. Dames presented two workshops: “Adult-Child Interactions” and “Strategies for Challenging Behaviors.” In the second workshop, Ms. Dames talked about how young children may act impulsively because they have not yet developed the capacity to separate their feelings from their actions. Strategies were given to help children begin to learn pro-social behaviors.

In a workshop led by Mandy Dillinger, OTR/L/SIPT Certified, “The Sensory Spectrum: Creat-ing a successful classroom environment for children of all abilities,” a variety of techniques were shared to help children feel comfortable in their own body. Mandy pointed out that all individuals react differently to sensory input and most adults have developed coping skills to deal with this. Some children have difficulty processing sensory input such as loud nois-es, awareness of one’s body in space in relationship to their environment and tactile sen-sations. Teachers learned a variety of strategies to help children cope with sensory input.

Research indicates that a learner is more likely to build knowledge when he is interested and engaged in the learning process. Faye Bankler Casell, an early childhood consultant from Houston’s Full Circle Teaching, along with Early Childhood Educator Aliza Plotkin, led a seminar to help teachers lead children to investigate their interests and to deepen their understanding. Teachers had hands-on experiences by exploring topics and conducting in-vestigations and research on specific topics.

As we promote Jewish journeys, we began our week with a celebration of Havdalah and ended with a celebration of Shabbat. Mary Levy, Judaic Specialist, led songs and a discus-sion of Jewish holidays and values. Rachel Rustin, JCC Director of Jewish Journeys, led a text study from Pirkei Avot Chapter 1, Mishna 6: “Provide yourself with a teacher; acquire yourself a companion; and judge every person in a favorable light.” This teaching serves as a reminder to our Early Childhood faculty that we can learn from everybody and we should not make judgments about anyone.

Soccer for Children one to Three years old! a collaborative program with Super Soccer Stars

Kick & Play (Age: 12-24 months accompaniedby Parent or Caregiver) Kick & Play, by the creators of Super Soccer Stars, is a parent-child pre-soccer and movement program specifi-cally designed for toddlers between 12 and 24 months old. Experienced instructors along with puppet friends, Mimi & Pepe, take you and your little one through a world of exciting physical activity. Individual attention,

positive reinforcement, and engaging original music help to develop pre-soccer skills that will have your toddler learning to balance, run, kick and play - all while having a blast! Parents, you’ll get a real “kick out of this” too!

Super Soccer Stars (Age: 2-3) Super Soccer Stars teaches soccer skills in a fun, non-competitive, educational environment. Classes kick off with stimulating warm-

up games followed by a muscle-warming stretch to get everyone ready for action. Individual, partner, and group activities are then introduced to optimize the experi-ence for each child. Every session culminates in an age-appropriate scrimmage. Pos-itive reinforcement and a low child-to-coach ratio ensure that each child improves at his or her own rate while having endless fun!
