welcomeAt its heart, JCI is all about empowering young people to affect positive change. This month in Cambridge we have done exactly that. Our skydive raised over £1300 for Arthur

Rank Hospice after nine members threw themselves out of a plane in August! Well done to all our incredibly brave jumpers and to everyone who sponsored them.

We are always trying to add value to our members, whether it’s through the ongoing business training events (don’t miss Derek’s Reilly’s Sex and Networking event on 25/9), or taking you to new obscure pubs (next pub club meet is 18/9 at The Pickerel). September also sees the arrival of membership Impact Week. From 17-23 September all UK JCI chambers will be dedicating a whole week to celebrating our members and the benefits of JCI membership. During this week, you can sign up as a new member and only pay for 10 months instead of 12.

We will be celebrating at The Pickerel on the 18th – why not bring a friend? With membership prices the lowest they will be all year, it would be rude not to!

We are a members’ organisation so if you have any suggestions or want to get more involved, please just let us know!

Cheers to the launch of JCI Pub Club

August saw the launch of the newly established JCI Cambridge Pub Club events which allow JCI Cambridge members to network and socialise in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Pub Club gives members the chance to experience real ales and cider (not cidre!) whilst supporting community pubs that are the real hidden gems of Cambridge. With this in mind, where better to hold our first Pub Club event than the Cambridge Blue, popular for its infamous selection of beers and ales on tap?

Members both old and new attended the event, developing connections over fine beverages. A hot topic for the night was the first issue of the JCI Cambridge magazine, Engage, which was very well received. Copies were on

display and its presence even enticed some new members.

The next Pub Club event is being held on Tuesday 18 September in conjunction with the launch of Membership Impact Week. This event is a UK-wide initiative running from 17 – 30 September dedicated to celebrating JCI members and the benefits of JCI membership.

Discounts are also up for grabs, with those signing up during the two weeks receiving 12 months membership for the price of 10.

The event will be held at The Pickerel, 30 Magdalene Street, Cambridge, CB3 0AF from 6.30pm.

No need to register, just turn up on the night.

…and hello to Membership Impact Week!

Mike Yates – Business Brilliance in focus

Mike Yates opened his seminar advising his audience not to take notes, but to focus on a few points from the session and implement them. I have done exactly that.

Mike is a successful entrepreneur whose business strips back all the noise surrounding the running of a company and focuses on what we all do every day; sales and marketing. His mantra is that we are not in recruitment, or law, or art -we are in sales and marketing.

My take away points were: 1. Article Marketing – approach industry magazines to write monthly articles on your industry specialism or outlook, like a published blog. Present yourself as the expert.

2. Create a table of 10 marketing activities and track their success. Start with one or two, then build the list. Adjust as ideas progress.

3. Systemise everything. Automate as much as you can so when you employ people you have processes in place to scale

easily without your time and input.

This was one of the best training presentations we’ve had this year, and was spot on for the entrepreneurs of JCI Cambridge.

Since winning the bid back in September 2011, the conference organising committee has been working hard finalising the venues, securing sponsorship and most importantly, devising a programme of events for everyone to enjoy.

Tickets are selling out fast and are only on sale until 30 September

So what can you expect from the weekend? As the picture might give away, the weekend culminates in the ultimate historic treat of a White Star first-class gala dinner aboard Titanic Belfast - the must-see attraction of any visit to the Emerald Isle. In the build up

to the main attraction of the weekend, the committee has devised an array of activities to stimulate your mind and whet your whistle.

Friday night promises to break the ice with a night of fun and frivolity at The Ulster Reform Club, one of Belfast’s oldest private members’ clubs which opened in 1885. The Irish themed night will feature traditional Irish ceili dancing. Please note that the Ulster Reform Club has a smart dress code, so no jeans or trainers.

Saturday is set to be a heady mix of intellectual stimulation by day and a night of glamour and glitz by night.

Keynote speaker Dr Jackie McCoy, Director of the Business Institute at the

University of Ulster, will be presenting on ‘leading with emotional intelligence’ on Saturday at the city’s Hilton Hotel, the JCI HQ for the weekend. She brings years of knowledge and experience on the topic of leadership and the emotional skills needed to be a good leader.

Saturday night’s alright when you’re faced with what’s being dubbed as the ‘Titanic experience’. Join fellow JCI members for a first-class gala dinner at Belfast’s newest visitor attraction where you will welcomed with a drinks reception, followed by a three-course meal, wine, entertainment and of course the annual JCI UK awards.

The convention weekend will close on Sunday with a

business lecture at 11am.JCI Belfast President Jennifer Cook said, “This year’s National Convention is set to be an outstanding event. We are delighted to welcome our JCI colleagues to Belfast and we have planned a weekend full of engaging seminars and workshops as well as a glitzy gala dinner at Belfast’s newest visitor attraction, Titanic Belfast.”

Tickets are selling out fast with a special ‘early bird’ rate available until 30 September. A full early bird ticket including all events from Friday 30 November to Sunday 2 December is just £115. JCI Charity news

Nine members of JCI Cambridge All Stars took to the skies above Peterborough to take part in a skydive raising over £1300 for their charity of the year, Arthur Rank Hospice Charity.

James Mitchell, Harriet Bastiani, Steve Nichols, Kelly Tennick, Mike Warren, Nick Culley, Jodi Chapman, Josie Powell and Robyn Armes all experienced the adrenaline-rush of a lifetime when they jumped out of a plane 15,000ft above the ground. They plummeted towards the ground at speeds over 120mph during a 50 second freefall, before their parachutes were

deployed and they were able to sail down to earth while drinking in the fantastic views that went as far as The Wash.

Despite a fear of heights... I was buzzing for days!

JCI Cambridge Community Director Harriet Bastaini said, “It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life, both the exhilaration of the freefall and the contrast of the peace and beauty flying back down to the ground.” She continues, “The support we have received from JCI

To all JCI members who contributed to this fantastic issue. We also couldn’t have done it without the help of:

Eversheds for supporting JCI Cambridge and use of facilities for meetings and all sponsors of our terrific skydive!

We also want to thank all JCI Cambridge members past, present and future for helping to create positive change in our local community.

All Stars take to the skies and raise over £1300 for Arthur Rank Hospice!members and our sponsors has been humbling.”

Fellow jumper Nick Culley echoed Harriet’s thoughts. “Despite a fear of heights, I was happy to take the plunge for such a worthy cause. It was the most exhilarating experience of my life, I was buzzing for days!” he said.

The All Stars were supported by a number of their fellow members who were on hand to take photos and catch some rays on one of the hottest days of the year so far. Lucy Day from Arthur Rank was there to cheer on the team, “I couldn’t believe how calm the jumpers were. The group was in great spirits throughout, knowing their sponsorship would have a positive impact on the lives of those who need specialist end of life care spurred them on.”

After they had come down from their adrenaline high, the team headed back to

Cambridge and hit The Mill Pond for a well-deserved beer and barbeque, followed by a punt up the River Cam.

The All Stars have raised a total of £1,370.25 for Arthur Rank as a result of the jump, with the amount still rising. The All Stars would love to make it to £1500. If you would like to sponsor them for their bravery, please visit www.justgiving.com/JCICambridgeAllStars. Just £30 can fund the cost of one counselling session for a patient or family member coming to terms with cancer.

JCI Cambridge would like to thank all those who took part in the event – the jumpers, supporters and everyone who sponsored their challenge.

Particular thanks goes to Eversheds LLP, Hadleigh Thrift Shop, Jim Lawrence and Bill Dastur (Group FD) and the Marshall Group for their generous donations.

Member of the month

New member

Mike is Group Financial Controller at Intergence Limited. He has been a JCI Cambridge member for 10 months and recently participated in the JCI All Stars skydive for Arthur Rank Hospice.

A typical day starts around 06.30 with a prod from one of my twin daughters. A check of my emails after breakfast brings me up to speed on what I can expect from the day ahead. My industry deals with various forms of data and optimisation for blue chip companies to avoid wasting money on unnecessary upgrades or products.

My morning is taken up with checking all the business accounts and upcoming payments, before working my way through the rest of my emails. I then move on to updating budgets and forecasts and working through month-end processes.

Before I know it, lunch is upon me. I walk to the local café to

get fresh air with colleagues and play a few games of pool in the office kitchen! In the afternoon I try to make a dent in the growing to-do list of little jobs that stream through.

I try to ensure I leave the office by 5.15pm so I can have dinner with my family. After some playtime, I put the kids to bed at 6.30pm. I then carry on processing emails and doing work for the next day.

A couple of CSI programmes later and it’s bedtime at 11pm.

Being part of the JCI almost feels like having an extended family. They value your opinions and there’s no pressure like you tend to get at some networking events where people throw

business cards at you. You can talk as good friends, while developing strong long-term business contacts at the same time.

Being part of the JCI almost feels like having an extended family.

I particularly enjoyed taking part in the recent skydive for Arthur Rank Hospice, a charity close to my heart. I’ve seen loved ones spend their last days there, and the care they give is amazing. The weather on the day was fantastic and the experience made me realise I’m a bit of an adrenaline junkie!

Role in business:As the business development manager/account handler for a creative design agency it’s important to network. My days are spent liaising with clients and people I’d like to work with.

Greatest achievement in career to date:I’ve already started working with some brilliant clients at TAG, mainly on website projects and marketing campaigns in the tech sector. However, in my previous role I was delighted to have brought in our largest company to date, Carphone Warehouse Group PLC.

Biggest influence on you professionally:I admire and respect all of the

team at TAG, but our managing director David Avery really stands out to me. He’s the right mix of personable and creative. He started TAG 27 years ago making us the longest standing creative agency in Cambridge.

Why have you joined the JCI?JCI is a great blend of people, all like-minded and willing to help each other out. It provides the personal development I seek through the training events, all of which I have found to be useful and diverse. I’ve learnt a lot already as a result of this, as well as meeting some great folks that I have stayed in touch with outside of the group.

Who are you looking to meet?Meeting people and talking about projects or just introducing TAG’s services is always a worthwhile venture. Ideally the individual has

a project in mind, however even if it’s just to bounce some ideas around then I’d be keen to have a chat as I’m sure we can help in the future.

What are you currently working on?I have a couple of website and marketing projects on at the moment and I’m doing some creative consultancy for an in-house team from an outsiders perspective.

Welcome to our newest member

JCI…be better!JCI encourages all members to ‘be better’ and push themselves further. Each week one member will share how they have bettered themselves through their work with JCI.

Kelly Tennick is the owner of EquiListics Equine Sports Massage and WholeBody Holistic Therapies and a JCI Cambridge member.

“I have always had good intentions when it comes to being involved with the community. but putting these into action can sometimes be difficult.

JCI has provided me with some amazing opportunities to make a difference in the community. I have been part of the ‘Race for Life’, travelled to Europe for the

JCI European Conference and made a three-year dream a reality when I skydived to raise money for the Arthur Rank Hospice.

We all have good intentions, but I believe JCI has made the difference between them being a dream and becoming a reality.”
