Career Center HOSA students send 23 to state competition

JACKSON, Mich. – The Jackson Area Career Center’s Health Science program will send 23 students to HOSA State Leadership competition to be held in April in Traverse City.

To qualify for state competition, a student had to place in the top three in their chosen category at the HOSA Region 3 Leadership competition held earlier this month at Washtenaw Community College.

“This is the best showing ever for Career Center HOSA students,” said Karen Bollheimer, Career Center Dental instructor. “The students really took this competition seriously and are ready to compete at the state level.”

Ten Career Center students captured the gold medal at regionals, including six from the Dental class. The Health Education team of Hannah Baum (Springport), Libby Deraedt (Western); Cassidy Kenyon (Western), and Rachel Leece (Napoleon) finished in first place, as did Alecia Ellis (East Jackson) in Prepared Speaking, and Jeremy Conley (Columbia Central) in Dental Terminology.

Other gold medals were Cassandra Belen (Columbia Central) and Jennae Herrington (home-schooled) in CERT Skills, and Stephanie Warblow (Hanover-Horton) and Lorin Post (Hanover-Horton) for their Career Health Display.

State finalists from the Dental class also include East Jackson’s Savanna Musbach and Seaira Poole, who took second and third place, respectively, in Dental Assisting. The three-person team of Menta Bellingar (Columbia Central), Alexandra Lienhart (Concord), and Haelee Varner (Jackson High) brought home silver medals in Community Awareness, as did the two-person team of Jackson High’s Ciarra Johnson and Sharae Stone for their Community Awareness presentation. Northwest’s Chelsea Literski placed second in Dental Spelling, while Tiffani Morris placed third in Medical Photography, and Oriana McDowell placed third in Dental Terminology.

“I am excited beyond belief,” said Bollheimer. “I have high expectations for this group. They are just like little dental sponges – they soak up every ounce of education and take it to the next level. They will make great contributions to the dental community!”

Also in the line up to attend State are Harlie Coppernoll (Hanover-Horton), Ashley Washington (Hanover-Horton), and Stephanie Smith (Western) who worked together to take second place in Public Service Announcement.

“The Healthcare Technician students stepped out of their comfort zone to display new skills like CERT – which is a new event that focuses on community need,” said Holly Metheringham, Healthcare Technician instructor. “Our students prepared a 3D Obstetrics/Gynocology display and stood out against the 33 other project displays.”

Career Center HOSA students who win at state competition will have a chance to compete at national competition in June.
