A message from our PResidentThe other day we received a thank you letter from one of our families. The family has two children that gradu-ated (UIC, Kendall College) and another two that are currently enrolled at Cristo Rey. In their letter, they

express their gratitude for the financial aid their sons are receiving. The letter reads, “This year has been exceptionally difficult financially for us, and receiving this help relieves some of our economic restraints. The recession the whole country is undergoing has definitely forced us to tighten our budget, but our priority of offering our children the high quality education that Cristo Rey Jesuit High School offers takes precedence. Our sons are aware of the generosity of this help and the opportunities

it offers to take advantage and correspond with excellent grades and good discipline.”

As you know, every family pays something for tuition and it is our philosophy that everyone at Cristo Rey makes sacrifices. This year, about 80% of our families are receiving financial aid. We have given more aid to our families than ever this year, and this allows them to keep their children here at Cristo Rey. In addition, we gave out Dominick’s gift cards at three time rate of years past and our emergency fund has been vital during this time since many of our families and facing layoffs and cut hours.

The hard work of our students is inspiring. Despite the recession, we had an incredible renew rate for our Corporate Internship Program. Over 90% of our sponsors renewed their contracts, and given our economy, we were delightfully surprised.

As I write, we just secured the last of the 130 jobs needed for all our students to be employed. Our sponsors constantly praise the hard work of our students. Like their parents, they too sacrifice to make their education possible.

As this Annual Report demonstrates, our mission is alive and well because of all of you. In our work of forming Christian leaders, men and women who will make our world a better place because of the values they bring to the table, we are blessed to walk with all of you. You model what we pray our students become. Thank you for your sacrifices and your hard work on behalf of the students and families of Cristo Rey. May God continue to bless you and your families.

Karina moreno: Class of 2005One of the proudest moments for the Cristo Rey community is when a former student is recognized for their character, ac-ademic excellence, and determination. Karina Moreno, class of 2005, truly embodies the Jesuit ideal of cura personalis. She was the valedictorian of her class, actively participated in student government, was a Kairos leader, and hosted many visitors as a member of the Ambas-sadors. Outside of school, she volunteered at her neighborhood parish as an assistant catechist, was the youth group leader for a couple years, and helped with translating for parishioners.

Karina is the oldest of three in a single-parent home and the first to go to college. She says that, “Attending Cristo Rey was an opportunity for us to progress in life. My mother wanted us to get the best education but we never had the money to pay for a private education, so this school was a real blessing.” Her brothers, Omar and Adrian, also attended Cristo Rey and have gone on to UIC and Northern Illinois. She received financial aid all four years, received a scholarship through her CIP job while at Cristo Rey, and was a recipient of a full scholarship to Marquette University, where she recently earned her bachelor’s degree in Business. While at Marquette, she worked part-time at R.W. Baird & Co. and was mentored by Mrs. Mary Ellen Stanek (Managing Director and Director of Asset Management) and Mr. Paul Purcell (Chairman and CEO). Karina always made time to volunteer even though she had a busy schedule as a full-time student with a part-time job. She volunteers at the Latino Community Center because

in her own words, “What I have taken with me from Cristo Rey is to be a woman for others. I am always willing to help someone in any way that I can.” She continues to be an en-couraging voice in the lives of our students and recent gradu-ates. Juan C. Vargas, class of 2009 says of her, “She knows her

mother made sacrifices for her and her brothers to be where they are today, and is deeply thank-ful for all the opportunities she was given.”

Over twenty Cristo Rey alumni attend Mar-quette University. Every August, we host a dinner sponsored by R.W. Baird & Co. for our students heading off to Marquette and invite Cristo Rey alumni currently studying there. Karina has been instrumental in the planning of this event over the last few years.Upon graduation, she was hired full-time

as a Business Analyst at R.W. Baird & Co. in Milwaukee and hopes to pursue further studies towards a joint J.D./MBA. She is such a remarkable individual that it is hard not to notice her intellect and integrity, so much so that she was chosen to grace the cover of [and was featured in] Marquette Magazine. Karina is a true inspiration to all of us and will surely attain all the goals she sets for herself.

Companions of st. ignatius Loyola, s.J.

A self described “pilgrim” from Spain, St. Ignatius Loyola, S.J. found himself drawn into the world and into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. Ignatius (1491-1556) studied at the University of Paris where he realized the value of education in forming the hearts and minds of the people of God. Members of the Ignatius Loyola Companions are recognized for their commitment to the enduring mission of providing Jesuit education to present and future generations of students in the Pilsen and Little Village neighborhoods.

Companions of Blessed miguel Pro, s.J.

Blessed Miguel Agustin Pro Juárez, S.J. brought preaching and the sacraments to various parts of Mexico City. Miguel Pro (1891-1927), a priest and martyr, finished his secondary education by uniting his efforts to a life of prayer. Executed as part of the persecution of Catholics in Mexico, Miguel Pro shouted, “Viva, Cristo Rey!” as his life ended. Members of the Miguel Pro Companions are acknowledged for providing substantial backing for Jesuit, Catholic, college preparatory education for future leaders in their community.

Blessed Alberto Hurtado Cruchaga, S.J. pioneered Church activities that favored the working poor in Latin America. Hurtado (1901-1952) experienced poverty early in life and benefited from a scholarship to a Jesuit school in Santiago, Chile. He founded El Hogar de Cristo, a home for those in need. Members of the Hurtado Companions are recognized for ensuring that Cristo Rey Jesuit High School remains a safe place and a second home for our students.

Father Pedro Arrupe, S.J. was a Basque-born Superior General of the Society of Jesus. Arrupe (1907-1991) witnessed the destructive power of humanity in Hiroshima but remained “full of hope” throughout his life. He coined the phrase “men and women for others” as a challenge to Jesuit students to be more committed, more Christ-like, in working to overcome injustice in our world.
