Jeffco Generations is being implemented in a variety of ways by schools in the district. At Rose Stein Elementary, an IB-focus school, the Generations Skills are being realized in integration with the IB curriculum. Within IB units, inquiry driven structures inherently makes instruction and activities an authentic task. Students create/generate questions and ideas while guided by teachers in an IB structure; these questions and ideas help drive the instruction throughout the unit. The structured inquiry engages the students while also making the learning relevant to their personal lives. An action is required at the end of a unit--Choose, Act, Reflect--and is a goal for students to be acting in an authentic way depending on their learning. Student reflection asks them to consider how they are thinking differently or changing their actions (sometimes a good action is NOT taking action).

REVOLUTIONARY WAR REENACTMENT

Preparing students for the 21st century cannot be accomplished without a strong and sustaining emphasis on the social studies. Teaching social studies powerfully and authentically begins with a deep knowledge and understanding of the subject and its unique goals. Some of our Jeffco 5th graders engaged in an exciting Revolutionary War Reenactment Event from Coronado, Hackberry Hill, Devinny, Kyffin, and Bradford NORTH.

One of the Colorado State Social Studies standard addressed with this experiential learning is: History 1- Evidence Outcomes: Explain important political, social, economic, and military developments leading to and during the American Revolution. A total of over 650 students from a variety of Denver Metro schools participated in this living history activity on February 28th at Bear Creek State Park. As the year is coming to an end, teachers and students will review the progress the students have made toward meeting their Advanced Learning Plan (ALP). From March through the beginning of May, and depending on the age of the students, teachers and students use data from classroom assessments, project rubrics, and individualized anecdotal data to determine whether the student has met his or her goal. Even though a student?s goal will be closed for the year, their ALP remains with them and they will set a new goal at the beginning of the next school year.

NEW JAGC WEBSITE

The Jef fco Associat ion for Gif t ed Children (JAGC), an affiliate of our state GT organization, the Colorado Association for Gifted & Talented (CAGT, coloradogifted.org) has just unveiled a new look to its website with a wealth of resources and info for parents. Check it out at jef fcogif t ed.org.

END OF YEAR ALP CLOSEOUT

Dut ch Creek Elem ent ary

Jeffco Generations invokes an extremely flexible form of thinking about how students interact with their education and their learning plans. Dutch Creek Elementary this year flexed their thinking around Advanced Learning Plan goals and how they could be used to benefit the Dutch Creek community.

One student, a fifth grader decided to set his goal around working with the Dutch Creek Drama Club to design sets for the spring production of Cinderella. The student worked all year gathering feedback from his teacher and peers. He started with sketches done to scale and discovered a variety of mediums to make everything perfect in the end. The result was a beautifully designed set for Cinderella and a deeply authentic experience for the student.

Mit chell Elem ent ary

For the last several years, Mitchell Elementary has embarked on a mission to make all learning visible. In addition to the deep level of in-classroom differentiation that has been embedded in Mitchell's instructional culture, students on Advanced Learning Plans have over the last two years worked on digital work portfolios, genius

hour or other outside of the box thinking opportunities.

Students had the opportunity to share some of their projects at Mitchell's annual LAMP night. Some highlights included Baseball & Physics, Melting Metal, and Vocal Nodes.
