Stitch by stitch Sewing club makes gifts for the needy By Darin Moriki [email protected]

Golden resident Mary Kuhns has sewn almost everything from wedding dresses to motorcycle seats, but for the past six years, she and about 30 other members of the Golden Community Center’s Sew N Sews Club sew for a new cause.

Each year, Kuhns and other Sew N Sews Club members sew tote bags and Christmas stockings that are then stuffed with various necessities for abused or neglected children, low-income seniors and people with disabili-ties in Jefferson County.

Kuhns said the group’s efforts begin each August. Some club members are assigned to make tote bags from donated upholstery fabric, while others fashion lap blankets, pa-perback book holders and Christmas stock-ings in a wide spectrum of designs and col-ors.

“They’re always ready to help,” Kuhns said of the club’s volunteers. “We have a great group, and it has just been awesome.”

The process to sew each item together is

not an easy one. In some cases, Kuhns said it takes about two and a half hours to sew an individual bag together — it takes several more hours to measure, sew and tie together a lap robe.

She said the feeling after completing each one is priceless.

“I think there’s a good feeling that you’ve given something to the community, espe-cially when it’s something that you’ve en-joyed so much,” Kuhns said. “I love Golden, and I’m just lucky enough to be able and healthy enough to be able to do this. It has been very rewarding.”

Kuhns said some of the handsewn items made by group members are eventually sold throughout the year to purchase toys, snacks, robes, blankets, slippers and night-gowns used to fi ll the remaining tote bags and stockings that will be donated.

At the end of November, the Sew N Sews Club hosts an annual potluck, where group members stuff the Christmas stockings and tote bags with the purchased items. The bags are picked up later that day by Jefferson County Community Assistance Division em-ployees to distribute to their clients around Christmas time.

Golden residents Mary Kuhns, left, and Dorothy Paltenberg, right, display two of the hand-made lap robes and tote bags that they and nearly 30 other sewing club members make each year for abused and neglected children, low-income seniors and persons with disabilities.

Susan Franklin, a Jefferson County Community Assis-tance Division project manager, said many of the chil-dren and seniors who receive the tote bags and Christmas stockings are touched by the group’s efforts. For some cli-ents, Franklin said it is the only gift they may receive that year.

“We really appreciate having people who are support-ing those who may not necessarily have the best of Christ-mases,” Franklin said. “These women put their heart and soul into this stuff. It’s incredible.”

Dorothy Platenberg, a Golden resident and Sew N Sews Club member, said many of the women also benefi t from the group’s efforts, because it gives them a reason to so-

cialize with others.“It gives them a safe place to hang out and exercise

their creative skills, so the benefi t is really twofold,” Platen-berg said. “For a lot of the women like me who live alone and don’t have much to do, it’s an outlet for adrenaline. It’s nice to be able to get up and know that you have something to do in the morning.”

Action Center service The Action Center (formerly Jeffco Action

Center) is a human-services nonprofi t in Lake-wood. Its mission is to provide an immediate re-sponse to basic human needs and promote path-ways to self-suffi ciency.

The Action Center serves the working poor and homeless in Jefferson County.

Year-round, the Action Center meets clients’ immediate needs through intervention programs like the food pantry, clothing bank and shelter. The Action Center is entering into the busi-est time of year, and the normal average of 160 households accessing services each day, will in-crease to nearly 300 households per day. Clients also face seasonal challenges. Provid-ing a Thanksgiving meal or buying presents for children puts enormous strain on already fragile fi nances. To prevent clients from falling further into poverty, the Action Center hosts its annual Thanksgiving Food Box Distribution and Santa Shop. Last year, more than 6,500 meals were enjoyed from the Thanksgiving food boxes that were distributed and 4,415 low-income children woke up to toys under the tree last year thanks to Santa Shop. Santa Shop allows parents pick out toys for their children, giving them the respect and digni-ty to be able to play “Santa Claus” for their kids.

The Action Center anticipates that more than 5,000 children are in need.

Once immediate needs are met and crisis is prevented or stabilized, the Action Center pro-motes long-term self-suffi ciency by connecting

clients to a network of resources and programs in the community that improve their education, health care, housing and employability. In 2011-12, more people than ever, came to the front door asking for help.

“Many hoped this struggling economy and resulting increase in need in our community would be just a bump in the road. It is not, it is the new normal,” said Mag Strittmatter, execu-tive director of the Action Center. Last year, the Action Center: served 28,000 Jef-ferson County residents; distributed 62,944 fi ve-day supplies of food; provided toys to 4,415 low-income children through Santa Shop; provided 6,513 Thanksgiving meals; gave School Supplies to 5,120 children; gave away 189,684 articles of clothing; provided 5,630 nights of shelter; and distributed $400,494 in utility assistance. From the donors who make fi nancial contribu-tions and drop off food and toys to the volun-teers that help at the Action Center each week or at a special event – it is only through the gener-ous support of the community that the Action Center is able to serve thousands of people in need.

In addition, more than 92 percent of every-thing we receive, goes directly to programs! To learn more about how the Action Center serves the community or how you can get in-volved, join us on one of our weekly tours!

Music Classes for Adults

Great Gift. Aordable. Fun.8 sessions of one-hour weeklybeginning January

May Music303.432.3209

Music is good for you. Whether you are listening, practicing, re-laxing, dancing, singing, driving or physically working music is soul satisfying. The field of music therapy explores how music helps you recover from illness. Science is still asking why children who study music develop higher IQ’s. Ask a grade school child whose school has a good music program how she rates it and you are likely to learn it is a favorite class. If your brain is monitored while you are performing music, your entire brain is shown to be involved. Anyone who has worked to mas-ter an instrument including their own voice will tell you that the complexity of the work requires you to repeat mental and physical complexities until ease allows you to enjoy the best of the beautiful

sounds you can produce. Not only is all of your mind involved, but much of your body – your breath, your spine, your arms and hands, your eyes, your balance and most of all your ears. In the process, you develop patience not only with yourself but in breaking a difficul-ty into components and master-ing them one at a time. And it is all honest work. It is never too late to start and the pleasure of working at it and seeing yourself improve is satisfying at all levels and ages. A good teacher will help you un-derstand the importance of the routine, and you relax into it and surprise yourself with the enjoy-ment you have working with the music. Music is yours to explore and enjoy. Music is good for you.

Holiday Marketplace at MorningStar

Mom creates holiday accessories By Ashley Reimers [email protected]

When it comes to craft show season, Westminster resident Tabatha Durham said she hopes for cooler weather. In her experience as a crafter, business seems to always do better during the holiday season when people are bun-dled up for winter weather.

“When it feels like the holidays out-side, then people feel like shopping,” she said.

Durham sells homemade children’s accessories such as hair pins and bows at local craft shows. She started more than four years ago when she was laid off from her job. Since then she’s ex-panded her creative endeavors to in-clude tiaras, super hero masks and hand-painted gourds.

“I have a daughter so that helped because I wanted to start doing stuff for her,” Durham said. “Plus after I got laid off I needed something to do. And then people liked what I was doing, and they were selling.”

With Christmas on the way, Durham focuses on holiday-themed products. She makes poinsettia, Christmas tree and snowfl ake hair pins and candy cane hair bows. She’s also busy transforming gourds from her garden into decorative snowmen. She recently sold her prod-ucts at the annual craft bazaar on Nov. 3 at the MAC in Westminster.

“This was my third year at the ba-zaar, and I always enjoy myself,” she said. “All of the other vendors are re-ally nice and friendly, which you don’t always fi nd at craft shows. Plus there are so many vendors that people really have a lot to choose from.”

Durham said the money she makes is enough to keep gas in her truck, and not much else. But to her it’s not just about the money. She said she enjoys the creative aspect and seeing the fi -

nal product. She also tries to keep her products affordable, with her most ex-pensive product costing $15.

“With some things, like the super hero masks and the tiaras, children are paying for them with their own mon-

ey,” she said. “So I want to make sure the kids are able to buy them. I just en-joy making everything and using my creative side. It keeps me busy.”

Thanksgiving Specials

A home for the holidays ‘Tis the season for holiday-

themed parties, shopping mara-thons and decadent goodies. Amongst all of the hustle and bustle, it can also be a time to re-fl ect upon the year’s blessings, in-cluding family.

These days, loved ones extend beyond just the two-legged kind. Pets are also considered family.

At Foothills Animal Shelter, nearly 8,000 orphaned animals are cared for each and every year.

These animals are safe and sound in a wonderful facility with devoted staff and volunteers watching over them. However, if they could talk, they would still have one wish this season — a home for the holidays.

If you happen to be search-ing for a companion, or know of someone who is, adoption could be the answer. Dogs, puppies, cats, kittens and critters (such as rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters and more) all fi nd their way to Foothills Animal Shelter.

The reasons that led these pets to the Shelter’s door are count-less. Sometimes the pet was lost and never claimed by an owner. Other times an owner may no

longer be able to afford their pet’s care.Since it is hard enough to pick out the perfect pet for your own household, Foothills Animal Shelter doesn’t encourage giving pets to others as gifts.

The timing has to be right and it has to be just the right fi t.

A great alternative is a Foothills Animal Shelter gift certifi cate that can be put toward a pet adop-tion. The gift recipient can then talk with the Shelter’s customer care team to help pick out the most appropriate animal at a time that’s right for them.

Consider making a wish come true for an orphaned pet by pro-viding a forever home.

The unconditional love and companionship they offer can be priceless. To see all of the home-less animals available for adoption during this holiday season, visit www.FoothillsAnimalShelter.org.

Better yet, stop by the facil-ity in person at 580 McIntyre in Golden near 6th Avenue and Indi-ana on the Jefferson County Fair-grounds.

Celebrate the holidays in traditional German Style

Relive a centuries old German tradition when the 12th annual Denver Christkindl Market kicks off Friday, Nov. 23, in connection with Downtown Denver’s Grand Illumination and the Parade of Lights.

This typical German Christmas market at Skyline Park along the 16th Street Mall will continue through Saturday, Dec. 22.

The year 2012 will again bring the sights, sounds and fl avors of the holiday season with a German fl air to the 16th Street Mall.

Music, holiday lights and typical vendor cabins will dot Skyline Park across from the Daniels & Fisher Clock Tower.

Be sure to see the Christkindl in person during the offi cial opening ceremony on Sat-urday, Nov. 24, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The opening ceremony includes: Open-ing remarks by local representatives, musi-cal performances by the Colorado Chorale Ensemble and the Austrian Connection and he Christkind arrival and prologue. Enjoy a great entertainment schedule with dozens of community and high school groups who perform or sing throughout the festival.

The market includes vendors from Ger-many and other European countries, as well as local artisans, offering high quality, hand-crafted gift items such as traditional hand-carved wooden fi gurines, handmade candles, and ornaments.

Traditional German food, bratwurst, po-tato pancakes, goulash and apple strudel will tempt your taste buds. Sip on warm Glüh-wein (spiced mulled wine) as you listen to traditional Christmas carols, or you can toast your friends with an authentic German Bier! Hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Sunday through Wednesday, and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Thursday through Saturday, with extended hours for the Parade of Lights on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 30 and Dec. 1.

“The Denver Christkindl Market is a great event for kids of all ages from toddlers to 100 years old. The German American Chamber of Commerce – Colorado Chapter is proud to again host this great event and to help keep the rich German traditions alive in Denver,” according to Jesse Young, president of the German American COC.

The Denver Christkindl Market is a produc-tion of the German Cultural Foundation of the Rocky Mountains and the German American Chamber of Commerce – Colorado Chapter, the initial contact for German companies considering business in the Rocky Mountain region, connecting German decision-makers with their U.S. counterparts.

’Tis the season The holidays ... it’s the most won-

derful time of the year! But even the most festive of seasons can take its toll with busy schedules and stress making us look older and fatigued.

Dr. Melinda O’Rourke and her staff at Essence Laser & Wellness are dedicated to health and beauty through experience, technology, and technique, and offer anti-aging solutions for a natural, more vibrant appearance. The top three anti-aging breakthroughs according to leading academic dermatologists are all of-fered by Dr. O’Rourke.

Fractional CO2 Laser Skin Re-surfacing: This combines the gold standard in wrinkle reduction, CO2 laser, with a new application to de-liver powerful results without the harsh side effects. According to Dr. David Goldberg, Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, “You are getting all the benefi ts of laser resurfacing, the best way to remove wrinkles, but without the down-time.” Microbeams of light bore tiny

holes in the skin, which stimulate the skin’s natural collagen production.

What’s new is more advanced software with the Deka DOT Laser at Essence to fi ne tune the delivery of the laser light, and optimize results.

Wrinkle Reduction Injections:Botox relaxes the muscles that cause creases.

Juvederm is hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring volumizer in the skin. Radiesse gives more volume to cheeks and hollowed areas. What’s new? Xeomin, a Botox competitor may be more cost effective, and Be-lotero, a new fi ller specifi cally for fi ne lines around the mouth and eyes.

Antioxidants: UV light creates

free oxygen radicals, which dam-age skin cells. A medical grade sun-screen should be applied daily, but antioxidants provide a second line of defense by neutralizing free oxygen radicals. Skinceuticals Phloretin CF or CE Ferrulic are biopsy proven to be effective in penetrating the skin barrier.

“Take time for yourself during the busy holiday season. Eat well, exer-cise, and get plenty of sleep,” Dr. O’Rourke recommends. “Give your skin and your spirit a lift with an invigorating seasonal Peppermint/Chocolate Microdermafacial at Es-sence.”

Recipient of the Golden Ethics in Business Award, Best of Jeffco 2012, and Honoree of Celebrate Women of Jefferson County, Dr. O’Rourke offers complimentary consultations. 720-583-1826, www.essencelaser.com

The thrill of the (tree) hunt After years of taking

the artifi cial Christmas tree out of the storage closet, you’ve fi nally de-cided to take the fam-ily on a day trip and cut down your own tree.

You’ve selected a tree farm or a designated cut-ting site in the mountains. You’ve planned your strat-egy and are getting excited

about the thrill of the hunt, and so are your kids.

Before you load up the family and take off on your

adventure, check to be sure you’ve packed plenty of water and snacks for the road.

Taking along some pa-per towels, disposable wipes and a trash bag wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Be sure you are dress-ing for the weather. Being cold and miserable would take the fun out of the trip.

Wear the oldest clothing and your worst old shoes or snow boots. You could be getting down and dirty, especially if the ground is wet or muddy.

Here’s your chance to wear those horrible “moon boots” that you’ve kept over the decades for no good reason at all. Heavy gloves, hats and coats

complete your fashion statement.

Temperatures can change in a jiffy in Colora-do, so be prepared for any-thing. An extra blanket or two wouldn’t hurt.

In case your destina-tion doesn’t offer the tools to cut down and trans-port your tree, be sure to include a handsaw and a rope.

If you’ve forgotten a saw, some of the tree-cut-ting sites will offer the use of one for a small fee, so be prepared with some cash.

Two more items you should bring along are a tape measure or yardstick, and a stepladder. Why, you ask?

Well, if you are REALLY prepared for the journey, you will have measured the height and width of your doorway, and the height of the ceiling in the room where your prized Christ-mas tree will be placed.

Remember that trees look relatively small when you see them in their out-door surroundings. It could be a different story once you get the tree to your door.

You may look pretty silly to others as you carry around that stepladder, but consider this … there is the possibility that really, really small creatures have called your tree home.

Case in point: In 2003, a family brought a tree home, put it up and deco-rated it before realizing

they had brought a fam-ily of little fi eld mice home with them! Check the higher branches and shake the tree.

You might be the only one carrying a yardstick and stepladder around, but you’ll be the one who won’t encounter any prob-lems once you’re home.

After what seems like hours of walking around – and hearing dad say, “how about THIS one?” – you’ve fi nally spotted the per-fect tree. Before you get all excited about cutting it down, take a peak at the bottom.

Move the branches away and make sure the trunk is straight.

If you get a tree with a crooked trunk, you might never get it straight in its base at home.

When you load the tree on top of your car, make sure the base is facing the front and that it’s tied down securely.

You don’t want to see your tree bouncing down the road as you look in your rear view mirror.

Let’s see … drinks, snacks, extra blankets, boots, cutting supplies, transporting supplies … your day trip is pretty much covered, but wait!

Don’t forget the cam-era. Just consider all the photo-ops of your adven-ture – not to mention doc-umenting why dad didn’t win out on tree choice!
