    In contrast to the technical talks we usually hear, Michael Maya Charles presentation atthe March squadron meeting was mostly inspirational. His theme was not so much aboutying or teaching new techniques as I initially expected, but rather it was about looking inside ourselves to dig out a desire always to learn new things and continuously to improve.Charles' contention is that artful ying is all about being in pursuit of a lifetime of excellence, while realizing that perfection is just an elusive point somewhere in the futurethat one can never really attain. It's the progressive realization of success along the way toward excellence that really counts. It requires that each of us develops a mindset of wanting to learn from others. He emphasized that "A teacher is someone who knows onemore thing than I do. That's why I always open myself up to learning from others."

    Charles opened his presentation by playing a short piece by Bach as an introduction tomake us understand that learning artfulying is like learning how to play a musicalinstrument. It takes consistent practice,and it is a discovery of oneself as the skilllevel increases over time. Of course, it takesdiscipline. He said that it is the disciplinethat helps us focus, whereupon he quoted a fr iend who said, "Discipline is justremembering what welove." That really hit mein the guts!

    You can only imaginemy amazement when hementioned YoYo Ma during his discourse onthe ar t of music , which, incidentally, isone of the early chaptersin his book.

    Although the ancientsunderstood the power of awareness, it is only recently that we havediscovered the importance and applicationof these simple, ancient ways in our lives,said Charles. Awareness has found its way into the latest new business techniquesinvolving the Tao de Ching; into anOlympic athletes connection with hersport, visualizing her success and focusing both mind and muscles on a seemingly unattainable human goal, he said.

    Awareness and visualization, he added, arealso part of our relatively recent discovery of meditation, Tai Chi, kung fu and themany other eastern disciplines that havefound new homes in the West.

    In flying, he said, wisdom is moreimportant than experience. It's moreimportant always to seek wisdom. He spoke

    about the plane crash in Bu ff alo last yearand how the human factor was the cause.He accused the system of not paying attention to potential inherent aws in a pilot, but focusing solely on track recordand experience. If the pilot is not xed,then trouble is just around the corner. Inmy view, his point clearly alluded to theissue of rogue pilots and what causespeople to make errors.

    a magical mixtureof left -brain - rational and right -brain -art is t ic , the perfect s tage to blendtechnology with the art of ageless wisdom.

    I was quite taken by this particularpresentation, not only because of themindset of continuous self -improvement inying --something that Charles admitted issometimes hard to nd among pilots whooften have big egos --but also because of themoral of the story, which was that we

    should apply that self -improvementprinciple in all areas of our lives.

    Touch and Go Day at Air Park Elite WasHistorical and Fun!

    Under a bright, late - winter Colorado sky, a score of cadetsfrom the Broomeld Cadet Squadron scurried out of thesquadron van and the local parental caravan eager to y miniature airplanes. However, more than one treat awaitedthem that day. They had the thrill of meeting a real P -38 pilot who talked to them about the ups and downs of handling thethe new prototypes of a military aircraft that was destinedfor fame in WWII. The nonagenarians stories of maneuvering the new craft fascinated them as he talkedabout the gears and gadgets so new to the edgling pilots of the pursuit aircraft in the war.

    He told them that the P -38 Lightning was a complete break -away from conventionalairframe design, power, and armament. It had twice the power of other planes and wasnearly twice the size. With its four .50 calibre machine guns plus a 20 mm cannon, it hadenough repower to sink a ship --and it did! The pursuit plane was famous particularly in thePacic War Theatre of Operations. Maj Rice held rapt attention as he told how the P -38

    As Je ff co squadron has no cadets, this PAO took the opportunity to assist Lt Col Randa % Carlson in documenting his Broomeld Cadet Squadrons Touch and Go, TAG, day, which was held at Elite Airpark, March 13. C got more than they bargained for as they not only got to y the model planes but also had the unique oppto meet a real participant who played an important role in World War II.

    was the Armys dream plane. More excitement was tocome.

    Sponsoring the Touch and Go Day was Tom Ne ff ,President of Airpark Elite Radio Control Club. Thepurpose for the clubs invitation to the BroomeldCadet Squadron to participate in the Radio Controlexperience was to further cadet understanding of aerospace and its opportunities. Meeting Maj Rice was a journey into the proud past of aerospace;

    l ea rn ing a b o u tradio controlled model airplanes was a journey into the present. Learning about the P -38 wasfascinating and serious, working with the modelplanes was sheer fun! Everyone got a turn at thehelm, and cameras were working overtime. LtCol Randall Carlson brings the squadron out toAir Park Elite frequently as part of his AerospaceEducation program.

    Radio control is strictly a hands -on activity.Members of Airpark explained the flight

    mechanism of radiocontrol, modeled ightprocedures, and turnedthe ight over to the

    eager hands of thecadets.

    In periodic Air FlightCompetitions, cadetsoften help the clubmarshal traffic, greet guests, and watch the

    air battlesf lown by the pros.

    In the rst article of this series on fuels, Airwaves February. 2010, I pointed out the cha % enges associated with the use of petroleum, crude oil, for the production of liquid transportationThese cha % enges include the global competition for crude oil & om emerging economies in Asia,continued political tensions with several un & iendly OPEC countries, the environmental impact of burning fossil fuels in terms of climate change, and the fact that fossil energy resources s petroleum are not natura % y replenished and wi % therefore be depleted at some point in the future.

    This perfect storm has prompted most of the oil -consuming countries to searchactively for alternative technologies thatcan provide liquid transportation fuels. Inthe United States, Europe, and Asia,petroleum is used as the raw feedstock inrefineries to produce liquid fuels, e.g, gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, and thetechnologies used in refineries havematured over a period that has coveredmost of the 20th century. Alternatively,coal can be used to produce liquid fuels,but those processes are very expensive andcapital intensive, and require considerable governmental subsidies to make themcommercially viable.

    The lack of petroleum in Nazi Germany as well as the oil embargo imposed againstthe South African Apartheid regimeforced these countries to invest heavily in what became known as the coal -to -liquidprocess that became their only source of liquid transportation fuel. South Africa became thereby self -sufficient in itsproduction of diesel and jet fuels. To thisday, it continues to sustain its aviation fuelsupply in this way, even though it comes ata high cost in the form of heavy government subsidies. Because of the vastcoal reserves that are available in the

    United States, large oil companies haveexplored the possible application of thecoal-to -liquid process as an alternative tousing petroleum, but these e ff orts havenot been proven commercially viable.

    Hence, in the United States coal is stillprimarily used for creating electricity. Inspite of the often acrimonious and mostly politically driven debates about climatechange, several big oil companies andbranches of our military are investing inresearch and development projects for theconversion of biomass as a renewablefeedstock for producing liquid fuels. Theoverall outcome that is envisioned is thesustainable production of transportationfuels without having to worry about supply problems.

    To better understand what these biomass -derived fuels are, we need to firstremember that even fossil resources suchas petroleum, coal and natural gas arederived from plant material, or what isnow generally called biomass. Hundredsof millions of years ago, those plants usedsunlight as an energy source --solar energy,together with water and carbon dioxide,CO2, as a carbon source from theatmosphere to build up their cell material.

    It is a process known as photosynthesis, andis still used by all plants today. The decay of all these various forms of plant materialunder high temperatures and pressures within the Earths crust over hundreds of

    millions of years, turned the plantmaterial into liquids ( petroleum ) , solids( coal ) , and gases ( natural gas ) . The wide variety of original plant species, as well astheir geographic distribution, may explain why there exist so many di ff erent types of petroleum, coal and natural gas.

    The enormous amount of scientificresearch that has focused on petroleumand coal over the past century, has led to

    the conclusion that algae were the plant -like organisms from which petroleum wasformed, while coal was formed fromhigher plant species such as trees, bushes, grasses and the like. Most algae aremic roscop ica l ly sma l l o rgan i smscomposed of green -colored plant cellsthat grow rampant in pools of stagnant

    water ( be t te rknown as pondscum ) .

    Like all plants,algae build upthei r ce l lmaterial using water and CO2,using sunlight asthe ene rgy source ( aga in ,

    photosynthesis ) , but they are also very good

    at storing excess energy in the form of oilsthat resemble vegetable oils. Depending on the species of algae, the production of oil by a cell can surpass more than half of the cell mass, and is quite impressive

    considering that the oil accumulatesinside the cell without bursting the cell wall.

    There is now considerable scientific

    evidence that petroleum was formed fromenormous masses of decaying algae, whereby all the cell material and the oils

    were sub jected toma n y c h e mi c a lreactions in under - ground layers. Theend result is a complex, black, oily or tar -like materialthat we now call

    pe t ro leum, whichliterally means, oil from rocks.

    In the next article in this series, I willdiscuss why algae are now becoming important as a feedstock for biofuels, andhow this ties into the current e ff orts by the research community in the UnitedStates to create new sustainable suppliesof jet fuels.

    While this world of fuel research isfascinating, it also carries many challengesfor the scientif ic and engineering community that must be overcome before we can use algae as a source of renewablefuels. It may be a while before your tankis green.

    Capt Tom Bensons progress in the Finance Trackhelped him earn Level II, Technician, and Level III,Senior Rating. On completion of Level II, he hasearned the Benjamin O. Davis Jr Award.

    Paul Luthy Takes Command of BroomeldCadet Squadron

    In a Change of Command ceremony Tuesday,April 6, 1st Lt Paul Luthy became Commanderof the Broomfield Composite Squadronreplacing popular out - going commander, Lt ColRandall Carlson, who has held the position forthe past three years.

    For some time,Paul said, I have sat in theback of the room while my daughterparticipated as a cadet. When Lt Col Carlsonannounced he was leaving the state, severalpeople approached Paul to step up to the plate.Paul knows the ropes they said. Paul is a man whose mission is to help. After 9 -11, he lookedaround to see what he could do for his nation.

    Pauls personal ethics and love of ying

    culminated in a service that he could render.After the events of 9 -11, I wanted to do whatever I could to help our state be protectedand prepared, he said. I found that in theCivil Air Patrol I could both help my

    community and further my aviation desire.Paul joined the Je ff co squadron in 2003, and forthe past three years has been in Crew Chief.

    A devoted family man, Paul makes working with young people the top of his priority list.The thing most enjoyable is giving O -rides to young enthusiastic kids, he said when he wasinterviewed for the February Airwaves.

    Now that he has been tapped to command theBroomeld Composite squadron, Pauls missionis to serve his family, his community, and hisnation.
