    CELEBRATING AIR SHOWS

IN YOUR DREAMS! With 2Lt. Dick Revette

    I.

2Lt. DICK REVETTE TALKS ABOUT THE OLD DAYS WHEN HE WORKED AROUNDTHE MOST AMAZING AIRCRAFT AT WORK EVERY DAY.

Scores of significant aircra" havebeen produced in the 100 years of flight, fo#owing the achievements ofthe Wright brothers, which wecelebrate each December. The Boeing 707, the F-86 Sabre Jet,and the P-51 Mustang are among theimportant machines that have flownour skies.

But the SR- 71, also known as theBlackbird, or Habu, stands alone as a significant contributor to Cold Warvictory. Only 93 USAF pilots ever steered the "sled, known as thefastest plane ever. Internet

Dick reflects that in the first 100 years of manned flight,no aircraft was more remarkable than the SR-71. Dick, who was a photo tech at Lockheed in the 1960s and1970s, got to see this amazing aircraft, an advanced, long-range, Mach 3 strategic reconnaissance aircraft, every day.Its my favorite aircraft ever, he says.

In April 1986, following an attack on American soldiers in aBerlin disco, President Reagan ordered the bombing ofMuammar Qaddafi's terrorist camps in Libya. A newer, faster spy plane had to be developed. The sleek airplane,

that was manned by a pilot and a camera man who worespace suits, could fly high enough to enter outer space. However, the problem was how to get it back to earth.

It could also outfly missiles aimed at it. Special tools andmaterials were needed to build the plane, and special fuelshad to be developed because its speed created intensiveheat. It was said that when it came back from a mission, ittook an hour for the metal to cool enou h to touch it.

In 1990, around the time it was retired for the first time, it flew to Paris to be shown at an airshow. Enroute it broke the record for flight time from New York to Paris substantially. Calledout of mothballs in 1993, it retired again in 1998. For more views of this incredible aircraft

Lt. Jennifer Kauffman enjoyed a warm sendff to duties overseas as CC Maj. Bob Smith athe June squadron meeting presented her with

a huge cake decorated to look like camouflageut of respect for her service as a SSgt with the

    Wyoming Air National Guard.

A note from Jennifer tells of her duty there andhe humble feelings that overcome her whenhe attends Fallen Comrades Ceremonies.

All the U.S. and coalition forces line up alonghe roadside on the base and trucks carrying theoffins drive down the middle of the road whileroops salute the flag-draped coffins, she wrote. The coffins are then loaded onto an aircraft andhe fallen soldiers are flown back to the U.S.

Within the first twenty days of duty Jennifer haswitnessed three such ceremonies.

ennifer stays busy working twelve hour shiftseven days a week working for six squadrons.

    NOTES FROM THE MIDDLE EAST

GET INVOLVED AND JOIN THE FUN!

Every activity in Civil Air Patrol requires teameffort. One important aspect of volunteering isbeing involved. Getting to know others makeshe team effort more enjoyable and makes the

    activity run smoothly.

Our CC, Maj.Bob Smith, wants every positiono be three deep, that is three people can step

up to serve at each of the positions sonecessary to fulfill a SAREX or a REDCAP.This column is designed to:

acquaint you with other leaders whopresently serve the squadron, and

spark your own willingness to serve in anarea of your interest and/or expertise.
